At a meeting next Friday in Rye Brook, N.Y., partners will have a chance to discuss a public offering, either as a stand-alone deal or as a prelude to a possible merger or acquisition.
Two factors insure that the idea, which has been debated for years within the firm, will be taken seriously this time. Jon S. Corzine and Henry M. Paulson Jr., the firm's co-chairmen, lean toward going public and have been laboring behind the scenes to build a consensus. Even more helpful, the runaway bull market of the last few years means there finally may be enough money to satisfy the many factions.
That does not mean the deal is anything close to a sure thing. But if it went forward, here is how the numbers might work.

Goldman Sachs Plans To Go Public -- Goldman Sachs Votes To End Private Partnership

NEW YORK - Goldman Sachs Group, the biggest and richest investment-banking partnership, voted to end 129 years as a private company and sell shares to the public.
The decision came after a secret vote by the firm's 190 partners at Goldman's annual meeting Friday and Saturday and a closed session of its six-person executive committee yesterday. An announcement was made to the partners early today.
Jon Corzine and Henry Paulson Jr., co-chairmen and chief executives, said in a joint statement.

Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947) is the Governor of New Jersey and a former United States Senator. He was sworn into office on January 17, 2006, for a four-year term ending in 2010, and has said that he intends to run for re-election in 2009. After being elected Governor in 2006, he stepped down from the Senate.
After being forced from Goldman Sachs in January 1999, Corzine campaigned for a New Jersey Senate seat after Frank Lautenberg announced his retirement.
Corzine was the prime sponsor, along with U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg, of a federal version of John's Law, in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of New Jersey, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who was killed by a drunken driver. The legislation provides federal highway safety grant incentives to encourage states to impound the cars of DUI suspects.

Mutiny is a conspiracy among members of a group of similarly-situated individuals (typically members of the military; or the crew of any ship, even if they are civilians) to openly oppose, change or overthrow an existing authority. The term is commonly used for a rebellion among members of the military against their superior officer(s).

19th century
The Indian rebellion of 1857 was a period of armed uprising in India against British colonial power, and was popularly remembered in Britain as the Indian Mutiny. It is remembered in India as the Sepoy Mutiny.
The USS Sharon, a New England whaler, was subject to multiple mass desertions, mutinies, and the murder and dismemberment of a cruel (and from the record, sociopathic) captain by four Polynesians who had been pressed into service on the Sharon.
The brig USS Somers had a mutiny plotted onboard on her first voyage. Three men were accused of conspiring to commit mutiny, and were hanged.

The "Somers Affair"
On the passage to the West Indies, the officers noticed a steady worsening of morale. On 26 November 1842, Mackenzie arrested Midshipman Philip Spencer, the son of Secretary of War John C. Spencer, and accused him of inciting mutiny. The next day, Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell and Seaman Elisha Small were also put in irons.
An investigation by the officers of the ship, including Lieutenant Guert Gansevoort, over the next few days indicated that these men were plotting to take over the ship, throw the officers and loyal members of the crew to the sharks, and then to use Somers for piracy. On 1 December, the officers reported that they had "come to a cool, decided, and unanimous opinion" that the prisoners were "guilty of a full and determined intention to commit a mutiny;" and they recommended that the three be put to death. The plotters were promptly hanged. Some have noted that the captain could have waited since there were only thirteen days to home port. In response, the captain noted the fatigue of his officers, the smallness of the vessel and the inadequacies of the confinement.
Somers reached St. Thomas on 5 December and returned to New York on 14 December. She remained there during a naval court of inquiry which investigated the mutiny and the subsequent court-martial and execution. Both proceedings exonerated Mackenzie, but the populace would never let him forget the situation. Spencer's defense was that they "had been pretending piracy".

Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947) is the Governor of New Jersey and a former United States Senator. He was sworn into office on January 17, 2006, for a four-year term ending in 2010, and has said that he intends to run for re-election in 2009. After being elected Governor in 2006, he stepped down from the Senate.
After being forced from Goldman Sachs in January 1999, Corzine campaigned for a New Jersey Senate seat after Frank Lautenberg announced his retirement.
Corzine was the prime sponsor, along with U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg, of a federal version of John's Law, in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of New Jersey, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who was killed by a drunken driver. The legislation provides federal highway safety grant incentives to encourage states to impound the cars of DUI suspects.

I must have missed out someplace in reading all the materials that have been coming across the desk, because I thought that we were coming here to honor the Members of the House and the Senate and salute them. So, I don't care what you say this dinner is; I'm going to salute the people I came here to salute.
You know, when our friend, Pearl [Bailey] was singing the National Anthem tonight—I don't know or have heard all the national anthems of the world, but I do know this: The only anthem of those I do know that ends with a question is ours, and may it be ever thus. Does that banner still wave "o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" Yes, it does, and we're going to see that it continues to wave over that kind of a country.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 22, 2000, Ensign John Elliott and his girlfriend, Kristen Hohenwarter, were traveling home from Annapolis, MD to New Jersey for the birthday celebration of John’s mother. A car swerved into John’s oncoming lane striking John’s car head-on, killing both John and the driver of the other car and seriously injuring Kristen.
It could have been avoided.
The person who struck John’s car had been arrested by Police three hours earlier and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Two hours later he was released to a friend.
The person charged with D.W.I. resumed driving. One hour later his sport utility vehicle swerved into the oncoming lane, hitting John’s car, killing them both.

One of the Saratoga's officers, Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko, managed to escape with his young son Jake. Unfortunately, his wife did not survive.
Three years later, a reluctant Sisko and his even more reluctant son are transferred to the space station Deep Space Nine in Bajoran territory. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 2008 American science fiction film, a loose remake of the 1951 film of the same name. The screenplay is based on the 1940 classic science fiction short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates and the 1951 screenplay adaptation by Edmund H. North, although Bates' name is missing from the credits. Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, the film updates the Cold War theme of nuclear warfare to the contemporary issue of humankind's environmental damage to the planet. It follows Klaatu, an alien who was sent to try and change human behavior or eradicate them off Earth.
In 1928, a mountaineer (Keanu Reeves) encounters a glowing sphere while on an expedition in the snowy mountains of India. He then finds himself awakening after a sudden loss of consciousness, with the sphere now gone and a scar on his hand. In the present day, Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), a Princeton professor, and other scientists are hastily assembled by the government in order to formulate a survival plan when it is feared that a large unknown object with a speed of 3x107m/s is due to impact Manhattan in approximately 78 minutes.
Jennifer Connelly as Helen Benson, a famed astrobiologist at Princeton University who is recruited by the government to study Klaatu. Connelly was Derrickson's first choice for the part. She is a fan of the original film and felt Patricia Neal's original portrayal of Helen was "fabulous", but trusted the filmmakers with their reinterpretation of the story and Helen, who was a secretary in the original. Connelly emphasized that Helen is amazed when she meets Klaatu, as she never believed she would encounter a sentient alien like him after speculating on extraterrestrial life for so long. Connelly was dedicated to understanding her scientific jargon, with Seth Shostak stating she did "everything short of writing a NASA grant application".
Jaden Smith as Jacob Benson, Helen's rebellious eight-year old stepson. His conflict with his stepmother was worsened by the death of his father, and initially dislikes Klaatu, believing he is a potential stepfather. Jacob replaces the character of Bobby (Billy Gray) from the original, and his relationship with Helen was written as a microcosm of how Klaatu comes to see humanity – the alien sees their cold and distant relationship as proof positive of normal human behavior, and their reconciliation forces him to change his mind. Smith said he found Jacob difficult to play because he felt the character an "opposite" of his personality. Smith had met Reeves before on the set of The Matrix sequels, which featured his mother Jada Pinkett-Smith.

City leaders praised Gil Kerlikowske as the most polished and experienced choice for Seattle's new police chief - and the best communicator - among the three finalists.
While his selection by Mayor Paul Schell was greeted yesterday with a range of enthusiasm, community leaders and City Council members who will deal with him were mostly united in their support.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 22, 2000, Ensign John Elliott and his girlfriend, Kristen Hohenwarter, were traveling home from Annapolis, MD to New Jersey for the birthday celebration of John’s mother. A car swerved into John’s oncoming lane striking John’s car head-on, killing both John and the driver of the other car and seriously injuring Kristen.
It could have been avoided.
The person who struck John’s car had been arrested by Police three hours earlier and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Two hours later he was released to a friend.
The person charged with D.W.I. resumed driving. One hour later his sport utility vehicle swerved into the oncoming lane, hitting John’s car, killing them both.

Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947) is the Governor of New Jersey and a former United States Senator. He was sworn into office on January 17, 2006, for a four-year term ending in 2010, and has said that he intends to run for re-election in 2009. After being elected Governor in 2006, he stepped down from the Senate.
After being forced from Goldman Sachs in January 1999, Corzine campaigned for a New Jersey Senate seat after Frank Lautenberg announced his retirement.
Corzine was the prime sponsor, along with U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg, of a federal version of John's Law, in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of New Jersey, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who was killed by a drunken driver. The legislation provides federal highway safety grant incentives to encourage states to impound the cars of DUI suspects.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Wall Street executive with deep pockets and no experience in elected office took a major step today toward entering the race to be New Jersey's next U.S. senator.
Jon S. Corzine, a former co-chairman of Goldman, Sachs & Co., announced he has formed a campaign exploratory committee. Aides said he has all but decided to run for the seat being vacated next year by Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Taking his first formal step into next year's New Jersey Senate race, Jon S. Corzine, the former co-chairman of Goldman, Sachs & Company, will announce on Tuesday the formation of an exploratory committee that will be registered with the Federal Election Commission, his advisers said today.
The announcement is intended in part to silence questions from some Democrats about Mr. Corzine's commitment to running. Though the former investment banker has been testing the waters for more than two months by meeting with county leaders and commissioning a poll, he has repeatedly delayed formation of a campaign committee.

Coming to the Microsoft campus was something of a unique experience, as we landed in a big helicopter and I was commenting that they probably think this is "Red Dawn" -- (laughter) -- or an invasion by aliens, coming in this large helicopter.

And at the same time that I mention this, there is also a gap that exists by some in this industry and our military. And it's gap that is not unique to this industry but I think is somewhat indicative of that in our country. There is a sense that in many places beyond this campus, from Sunnyvale to Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley, that there are some in the digital world who dismiss the importance of national security, that some soldiers in the high-tech revolution don't fully appreciate or understand the soldiers in camouflage, that tanks and guns are somehow rusty relics of the past and may be obsolete in the new information-based world that is going to carry us into the future.
I think of this because there is one Silicon Valley executive who said about as much in an interview that he granted to the New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. He said that: "We don't even care about Washington." He said: "Money is extracted from Silicon Valley and then wasted by Washington. And why would I care about wealth destroyers?"
I am not even going to bother turning around to see if there is any kind of receptivity behind my shoulder. (Laughter.)
But we do live in a world where the private-sector innovation is so powerful that it's tempting to view the world through that lens alone, where the intellectual property and the virtual assets of Yahoo! are more highly valued by Wall Street than the oil reserves and supertankers of Texaco. So I think it can be easy to forget that this global marketplace was neither created by magic nor will it be kept by marketing.
And I wanted to be here today because I believe that Microsoft does understand the crucial connection between our national security and our national prosperity. And Bill Gates a moment ago talked about the connection that we do in fact have.
You do work on information and issues that are of critical importance to us. Critical infrastructure is something that we have to devote more and more time and thought and resources to. We have a new initiative to train those who are departing service members for information technology careers. It's very important to us, as it is to you; and even your support for the restoration of the historical battleship Missouri. So I think you appreciate the connection perhaps more than others do.

USS Ticonderoga (DDG/CG-47), fifth to bear the name, was a guided-missile cruiser, homeported in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The "Tico" was the lead ship of her class.
She was delivered on 13 December 1982, and commissioned on 22 January 1983, with First Lady Nancy Reagan, the ship's main sponsor, having the honor of christening the ship 16 May 1981.
This Ticonderoga was the first ship to feature the Aegis combat system. This allows the ship to track and engage multiple targets (aircraft) much more effectively than any ship previously.

The Ticonderoga (CG 47) - Class
The TICONDEROGA - class consists of the 27 most expensive cruisers and the most powerful surface combatants in service in the world. The high price of about $1 billion is a result of the AEGIS Combat System.
Due to their extensive combat capability, these ships have been designated as Battle Force Capable (BFC) units. Their primary armament is the Vertical Launching System (VLS) which is able to employ both the long range surface-to-surface Tomahawk Cruise Missile and the Standard Surface-to-Air Missile. These multi-mission ships are capable of sustained combat operations in any combination of Anti-Air, Anti-Submarine, Anti- Surface, and Strike warfare environments. They are built to be employed in support of Carrier Battle Groups, Amphibious Assault Groups, as well as interdiction and escort missions.
TICONDEROGA class cruisers are named after famous American Battles (with the exception of USS THOMAS S. GATES).

When the Department of Navy announced in February 1980 that the lead ship of a new class of AEGIS-equipped, guided missile cruisers would be called Ticonderoga, it marked the fifth time in U.S. Navy history that a ship would bear that historic name. The newest ship was named, not after the great stone fortress itself, but in commemoration of the capture of Fort Ticonderoga on 10 May 1775 by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

The Aegis combat system is an integrated weapons system used by the United States Navy. It is both an integrated single ship system and a ship-to-ship network. The Aegis combat system is one of the most advanced and most capable defense systems currently in use.
The Aegis weapon system is an advanced combat, control, and information system that uses powerful computers and radars to track and destroy enemy targets. It is the most advanced modern combat system and is the first fully integrated combat system built to defend against air, surface, and subsurface threats.
The Aegis Weapons System comprises the SPY-1 Radar, MK 99 Fire Control System and ORTS, MK 41 VLS, the Command and Decision Suite, and SM-2 Standard Missile systems. Shipboard torpedo and naval gunnery systems are also integrated. The Aegis combat system is controlled by an advanced, automatic detect-and-track, multi-function three-dimensional passive electronically scanned array radar, the AN/SPY-1. Known as "the Shield of the Fleet", the SPY high-powered (four megawatt) radar is able to perform search, tracking, and missile guidance functions simultaneously with a track capacity of well over 100 targets at more than 100 nautical miles (190 km).
The Aegis system uses missile uplink using the AN/SPY-1 radar for midcourse guidance of Standard missiles during engagements, but still requires the AN/SPG-62 radar for terminal guidance. This means that with proper scheduling of intercepts, a large number of targets can be engaged simultaneously.

AEGIS Weapon System Mk 7
Modern anti-ship missiles can be launched several hundred miles away in coordinated attacks, combining air, surface and subsurface launches, so that the missiles arrive on target almost simultaneously. The Navy defends against this threat with a number of different systems. In a carrier battle group, fighter aircraft provide the outer layer of defense; Aegis coordinates and protects the inner layer. The Navy's Aegis system provides area defense for the battle group as well as a clear air picture for more effective deployment of air assets. Aegis enables fighter aircraft to concentrate more on the outer air battle while cruisers and destroyers assume a greater responsibility for battle group area defense. The missile launching system, the computer programs, the radar and the displays are fully integrated to work together.
