The Cage [ Star Trek: The Original Series ]

Unaired pilot

[Briefing room]

SPOCK: The inhabitants of this planet must live deep underground, and probably manufacture food and other needs down there. Our tests indicate the planet surface, without considerably more vegetation or some animals, simply too barren to support life.

ONE: So we just thought we saw survivors there, Mister Spock.

SPOCK: Exactly. An illusion placed in our minds by this planet's inhabitants.

BOYCE: It was a perfect illusion. They had us seeing just what we wanted to see, human beings who'd survived with dignity and bravery, everything entirely logical, right down to the building of the camp, the tattered clothing, everything. Now let's be sure we understand the danger of this. The inhabitants of this planet can read our minds. They can create illusions out of a person's own thoughts, memories, and experiences, even out of a person's own desires. Illusions just as real and solid as this table top and just as impossible to ignore.

ONE: Any estimate what they might want one of us for?

SPOCK: They may simply be studying the Captain, to find out how Earth people are put together. Or it could be something more.

VINA: It's not fair. I did what you asked.

KEEPER: Since you resist the present specimen, you now have a selection.

PIKE: I'll break out of this zoo somehow and get to you. Is your blood red like ours? I'm going to find out.

KEEPER: Each of the two new specimens has qualities in her favour. The female you call Number One has the superior mind and would produce highly intelligent children.

PIKE: All I want to do is get my hands on you. Can you read these thoughts, images of hate, killing?

[Hearing room]

KIRK [OC]: The court-martial of Mister Spock has been convened in closed session. Despite all we can do, images continue to be transmitted to us from Talos Four.

MENDEZ: Starfleet has ordered no contact with Talos Four. They made no exceptions.

SPOCK: You have no choice, sir. I'm sorry. The Keeper has taken over control of our screen. Do you understand, sir? (flash) As you saw before, Captain Pike had been knocked unconscious and captured by the Talosians.

[Pike's cage]

(Pike discovers there is a transparent wall blocking his escape, and tests it's strength. A group of aliens arrive)

PIKE: Can you hear me? My name is Christopher Pike, commander of the space vehicle Enterprise from a stellar group at the other end of this galaxy. Our intentions are peaceful. Can you understand me?

(the aliens communicate with their minds, not voices)

TALOSIAN: It appears, Magistrate, that the intelligence of the specimen is shockingly limited.

MAGISTRATE: This is no surprise since his vessel was baited here so easily with a simulated message. As you can read in its thoughts, it is only now beginning to suspect that the survivors and encampment were a simple illusion we placed in their minds.

PIKE: You're not speaking, yet I hear you.

MAGISTRATE: You will note the confusion as it reads our thought transmissions.

PIKE: All right, then, telepathy. You can read my mind. I can read yours. Now, unless you want my ship to consider capturing me an unfriendly act

MAGISTRATE: You now see the primitive fear/threat reaction. The specimen is about to boast of his strength, the weaponry of his vessel, and so on. Next, frustrated into a need to display physical prowess, the creature will throw himself against the transparency.

PIKE: If you were in here, wouldn't you test the strength of these walls, too? There's a way out of any cage, and I'll find it.

MAGISTRATE: Despite its frustration, the creature appears more adaptable than our specimens from other planets. We can soon begin the experiment.

PIKE: (grabbing the phase pistols) They don't work.

NUMBER ONE: They were fully charged when we left. It's dead. (communicator) I can't make a signal. What is it?

PIKE: Don't say anything. I'm filling my mind with a picture of beating their huge, misshapen heads to pulp, thoughts so primitive they black out everything else. I'm filling my mind with hate.

VINA: How long can you block your thoughts? A few minutes, an hour? How can that help?

COLT: Leave him alone.

VINA: He doesn't need you. He's already picked me.

COLT: Picked her? For what? I don't understand.

VINA: Now, there's a fine choice for intelligent offspring.

COLT: Offspring, as in children?

NUMBER ONE: Offspring as in, he's Adam. Is that it?

VINA: You're no better choice. They'd have more luck crossing him with a computer.

NUMBER ONE: Well, shall we do some time computation? There was a Vina listed on that expedition as an adult crewman. Now, adding eighteen years to your age then.

(The Keeper approaches the cage)

VINA: It's not fair. I did what you asked.

KEEPER: Since you resist the present specimen, you now have a selection.

PIKE: I'll break out of this zoo somehow and get to you. Is your blood red like ours? I'm going to find out.

PIKE: All I want to do is get my hands on you. Can you read these thoughts, images of hate, killing?

KEEPER: The other new arrival has considered you unreachable but now is realising this has changed. The factors in her favour are youth and strength, plus unusually strong female drives.

PIKE: You'll find my thoughts more interesting, thoughts so primitive you can't understand. Emotions so (stricken by pain)

KEEPER: Wrong thinking is punishable. Right thinking will be as quickly rewarded. You will find it an effective combination. (leaves)

NUMBER ONE: Captain.

PIKE: No. No, don't help me. I have to concentrate. They can't read through hate.

(the group are apparently dozing when the Keeper opens the hatch to get the laser pistols Pike dropped there. He grabs him and pulls him into the cage, and starts to throttle him)

PIKE: Hold still, or I'll break your neck.

VINA: Don't hurt them. They don't mean to be evil.

PIKE: I've had some samples of how good they are.

(the Talosian appears to be a vicious monster)

PIKE: You stop this illusion, or I'll twist your head off. All right, now you try one more illusion, you try anything at all, and I'll break your neck.

KEEPER: Your ship. Release me, or we'll destroy it.

VINA: He's not bluffing, Captain. With illusion they can make your crew work the wrong controls or push any button it takes to destroy your ship.

PIKE: I'm going to gamble you're too intelligent to kill for no reason at all. (hands him over to Number One and picks up the laser pistols, firing them at the glass wall) On the other hand, I've got a reason. I'm willing to bet you've created an illusion this laser is empty. I think it just blasted a hole in that window and you're keep us from seeing it. You want me to test my theory out on your head?

The Cage (Star Trek: The Original Series)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Cage" is the first pilot episode of the Star Trek: The Original Series. It was completed in early 1965 (with a copyright date of 1964), but not broadcast on television in its complete form until late 1988. The episode was written by Gene Roddenberry and directed by Robert Butler. It was rejected by NBC in February 1965, and the network ordered another pilot episode, which became "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

Much original footage from "The Cage" was later incorporated into the first season two-parter, "The Menagerie."

Slain deputy had become White Center's "Superman"

By Nick Perry

Seattle Times staff reporter

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.

But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.

To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.

Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.

At 1:42 a.m., Cox was called to a White Center house party following reports of gunshots. He was the lone deputy interviewing partygoers one-by-one in a bedroom when a man drew a gun. Cox was shot once in the head.

State will pay $3.3 million to family of King County deputy killed by ex-convict

Post by Joe Turner on Sep. 10, 2009 at 11:30 am

BY Joseph Turner

The News Tribune

Washington has agreed to pay $3.275 million to the family of a King County deputy who was killed by an ex-convict under supervision by the state prison system.

The widow and child of deputy Steve Cox claimed the state Department of Corrections was negligent in its supervision of Raymond Porter, a drug offender who had been released from prison and killed Deputy Cox in December 2006.

The original $22 million claim against the state, filed a year after his death, alleged prison officials let Porter out of prison too soon. He had been serving time at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center outside Aberdeen for drug and assault convictions and had been released only four months before he killed Deputy Cox.

“Deputy Cox was a courageous and beloved officer who protected his community and we all are diminished by his loss,” DOC Secretary Eldon Vail said in a news release issued on Thursday. “We sympathize with the loss of love, compassion, nurturing and other immeasurable qualities Steve Cox brought to his family. The Department of Corrections is deeply saddened and heartsick over the death of Deputy Cox. We hope the Cox family can begin to put part of this tragedy in the past and begin healing.”

Seattle attorney John Payne, who represented the Cox family, said Maria Cox, the deputy’s widow, “is very grateful and relieved to have this resolved and that she can put this behind her and move on.”

Steve Cox was the third of three law enforcement officers who were killed over a five-month span in 2006 by ex-convicts who were still under community supervision by the DOC. Cox was investigating an incident at a home in south Seattle on Dec. 2, 2006 when Porter shot and killed him.

Man who shot deputy turned gun on self; Cox remembered at vigil

By Jennifer Sullivan

Seattle Times staff reporter

The man who killed King County sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox early Saturday took his own life during a gunfight with other sheriff's deputies, authorities said Tuesday.

Raymond O. Porter had been shot by deputies in the chest and thigh when he shot himself in the head, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart. The county Medical Examiner's Office has ruled his death a suicide, Urquhart said.

Investigators initially believed sheriff's deputies had killed Porter.

Porter shot Cox twice in the head while Cox was questioning him in an upstairs bedroom of a White Center home. The deputies were investigating the beating and shooting of a motorist who crashed his car into a vehicle belonging to one of several partygoers at the home.

Detectives also suspect Porter fatally shot a man whom police described as a gang member about four hours before Cox was killed. The nude body of Dominique McCray, 23, was found at about 10 p.m. Friday in the 13600 block of 18th Avenue South in SeaTac, police documents say.

The bullets used to kill Cox and McCray came from the same handgun, police said.

The announcement that Porter committed suicide came as sheriff's deputies and members of the community gathered Tuesday evening outside the White Center Sheriff & Community Service Center for a candlelight vigil for Cox.

Cox, 46, was a 10-year law-enforcement veteran and beloved deputy who had patrolled White Center — the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up — for the past three years. He took cleaning up White Center seriously enough to become president of a neighborhood council and was often spotted at restaurants and stores with his wife and their newly adopted 1-year-old son.

"He was a godsend, an angel," Burien resident Whitney Horton said during the vigil.

Horton, 41, said that when she was addicted to crack cocaine four years ago Cox would scold her for loitering in White Center. The deputy was strict but always a role model, she said.

"He was just doing his job, I didn't take it personally," Horton said. "He was a father, a brother and a friend."

Horton read a poem she wrote about Cox before the nearly 200 people huddled outside the White Center Sheriff & Community Service Center for the vigil. "Gone too soon is what you are. In the blink of an eye you are an amazing star," Horton read.

During the vigil, Sheriff Sue Rahr said hearing that Porter was not killed by deputies was "a surprising new twist."

While Cox was interviewing Porter alone to find out who assaulted the motorist, Porter shot Cox twice in the head.
