Val Chambers, Caprica's Minister of Defense: Let's be clear. I don't like your boss, I don't like your planet and I don't like your people, so you crawl under that rock where your Guatrau lives, and you tell him that not only will I not be pressured or blackmailed, but the government of Caprica is going to take a very special interest in him, his business and his low-life lawyers.

Sam Adama: Perhaps you should sleep on it.

Chambers: Deliver the message, errand boy, word for word.

Sam Adama: Goodbye, Minister Chambers. Have a safe journey.

Chambers: I'm not going anyplace, you frakking dirt-eater.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

JEB BUSH

Former Governor of Florida

Press Release - Barack Obama's Executive Orders Trample on the Second Amendment

January 05, 2016

Barack Obama has proved again why he will go down as one of the most liberal and divisive presidents in the history of our nation. Obama's declaration that he will impose his gun control agenda by executive order shows an utter disregard for the Second Amendment as well as the proper constitutional process for making laws in our nation.

Liberals like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton seize on every opportunity to advance a gun-grabbing agenda. After the ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Obama and Clinton called for sweeping gun control provisions that would trample on the Second Amendment. Recognizing that there is no chance to push their agenda through Congress, where even less liberal Democrats oppose their gun control policies, Obama has once again turned to unlawful executive orders to bypass Congress. Similar to his executive orders to grant legal status to millions of immigrants here illegally without securing the border or the support of Congress, Obama is now trying to do an end-run on the Second Amendment.

When I am president of the United States, I will repeal Obama's anti-gun executive orders on Day One of my administration. I will oppose legislative actions that impose unnecessary burdens on law-abiding gun owners, and I will nominate and fight for conservative judges who have a deep respect for the Constitution and the Second Amendment. With the next president possibly having the opportunity to nominate as many as four justices to the Supreme Court, the stakes in this election couldn't be higher for gun owners. Hillary Clinton will surely stack the federal judiciary with liberal judges who will chip away at the Second Amendment. We cannot give her that opportunity.

The question facing Republican voters is who is the best candidate to take the fight to Hillary Clinton. No one has a stronger track record of standing up for gun owners and winning than I do. I am a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and as governor of Florida I passed several pro-Second Amendment pieces of legislation that made our state a national model for protecting and advancing gun rights. We were the first state to pass Stand Your Ground to enable citizens to defend themselves from attackers outside their homes. We also expanded concealed carry permits and provided reciprocity to gun owners in other states so they could carry while visiting Florida. As a result of our efforts to fortify Second Amendment rights of our citizens, Florida today has more concealed carry permit holders than any other state. I am proud of the fact that I earned an A+ rating from the NRA.

I am equally proud of the fact that we proved in Florida that reducing gun violence and crime and respecting the Second Amendment can go hand-in-hand. Early in my first term as governor, I signed a law that imposed tough mandatory minimum sentences on felons who used guns in their crimes. The legislation, which was called 10-20-Life, put gun felons behind bars for 10 years if they brandished a firearm in the commission of a crime; 20 years if they shot the weapon; and life in prison if they shot and injured or killed another person. Together with other tough on crime strategies, 10-20-Life helped reduce gun violence in Florida by nearly 20 percent while bringing our overall crime rates down to a 35-year low.

With radical Islamic terrorist organizations like ISIS using mass shootings like the ones in San Bernardino and Paris to wage jihad against America and our allies, I believe it is more important than ever to stand strong in defense of gun rights.

The Second Amendment is the original homeland security act. Rather than taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens as Obama and Clinton would like to do, we should focus on keeping guns out of the hands of the terrorists who want to kill innocent Americans. My commitment to responsible gun owners is clear. As president of the United States, I will defend the Second Amendment, always.

As Spirits Fly With Atlantis, Delays a Mir Inconvenience : Space: The shuttle pierces a blue sky after Florida storms scratched two launch dates. Linkup with Russian station is on track for Thursday.

June 28, 1995 K.C. COLE TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis cracked open a robin's-egg-blue Florida sky with a deafening roar Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of spectators and NASA officials cheered and sighed with collective relief.

Pounding rain with lightning had been soaking the area for days, preventing two scheduled launches last week and threatening to keep the five U.S. and two Russian crew members indefinitely on the ground. But the storms held off Tuesday.

Atlantis had to begin its journey during a 10-minute window beginning at 3:32 p.m. EDT in order to make its planned docking with the Russian Mir space station, now set for Thursday morning. Mir passed over Kennedy Space Center just minutes before Atlantis took off. By the time the shuttle left the ground, Mir was over Iraq.

"Liftoff of the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission that will herald a new day of international cooperation in space," launch commentator Bruce Buckingham announced as the shuttle, looking like a toy plane attached to a mile-high flamethrower, rode into orbit. The blastoff marked America's 100th manned trip into space.

The mission is the first joint U.S.-Russian mission since a U.S. Apollo spacecraft linked up briefly with a Russian Soyuz in 1975. This time, the two craft are to mate for five days at more than 200 miles above the Earth while the crew conducts several dozen experiments on biological effects of zero gravity to set the stage for building an international space station.

Waiting on Mir for a ride home is astronaut Norman E. Thagard, who broke the record for the longest U.S. spaceflight on June 6, when he logged 85 days on Mir. His two crew mates, cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov, will also be hitching a ride home on Atlantis.

Meanwhile, cosmonauts Anatoly Y. Solovyev, and Nikolai M. Budarin, who will ride up on Atlantis, will remain in space as the next Mir crew.

Atlantis is commanded by Navy Capt. Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson. In the pilot's seat is Air Force Lt. Col. Charles J. Precourt. The mission specialists are Dr. Ellen S. Baker, Gregory J. Harbaugh and Bonnie J. Dunbar.

Launch was delayed so long that dozens of Russian dignitaries gathered for the event had to leave for Moscow to get home in time for a meeting on space matters with Vice President Al Gore.

One of those dignitaries, cosmonaut Elena Kondakova, was waiting on Mir when Thagard arrived in March; in February, she had waved out Mir's window at the crew of the shuttle Discovery during its rendezvous. In a preliminary to the Atlantis docking, Discovery circled around Mir and hovered as close as 37 feet for just 10 minutes before backing off.

"It was a great pity they did not dock with us," said Kondakova just hours before heading home. "I will be jealous of those who will be on the station and receiving the crew."

Both U.S. and Russian crew members are eager to see their colleagues again.

"We're really excited about opening that hatch and seeing [Thagard's] smiling face," said Harbaugh. "I'm not sure if he's going to say hello in English or Russian."

This is to be the first of seven planned dockings, all to test procedures and equipment for the international space station, a partnership among Russia, the United States, Europe, Japan and Canada. Construction is due to begin in 1997, with occupancy scheduled for 2002.

Soon after launch, Atlantis began a series of rocket firings designed to put it in roughly the same orbit as Mir. Today crew members will continue to line up their orbit and will activate Spacelab, where experiments are stowed. They will also check out equipment and cameras for the docking.

On Thursday, they will drift up toward Mir. The docking itself, Gibson said, will be a "long, slow, laborious process."

The American Presidency Project

William J. Clinton

XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Remarks Announcing the Selection of Lieutenant Colonel Eileen M. Collins, USAF, as the First Woman Space Mission Commander

March 5, 1998

I'm getting my facts straight. [Laughter] First of all, let me say that Hillary and I are delighted to have all of you here. The story Hillary told about her fascination with space is not apocryphal; it is real. I heard it a long time before I ever thought she would be telling it before a microphone. And so this is a thrilling day for us.

I want to thank Dan Goldin and all the people at NASA for doing an absolutely superb job. Thank you, Colonel Collins, for your remarks and your example. To the Members of Congress who are here, Congressman Houghton and Representatives Jackson Lee, Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Zoe Lofgren, thank you for your support. I want to thank my Science Adviser, Jack Gibbons, as well as Sally Ride and Jean Phelan, a pioneer aviator, who are here.

Let me also say that Colonel Collins' husband is also a pilot, and when she introduced him to me, she said, "He's not only a pilot, he's a scratch golfer; he's better than you are." [Laughter] And after a brief conversation, we actually concluded it was more likely that I would go into space than that I would ever be as good as he is. [Laughter]

Forty years ago, Life magazine introduced America's first astronauts to the world, noting that the seven Mercury astronauts were picked from, quote, "the same general mold." They were all military pilots. They were all in their thirties. They all had crewcuts. [Laughter] They were all men. And they really were all true American heroes. But heroes come in every size and shape and gender. Today we celebrate the falling away of another barrier in America's quest to conquer the frontiers of space and also to advance the cause of equality.

I'm proud to be here to congratulate Colonel Eileen Collins on becoming the first woman to command a space shuttle mission. She may not fit the exact mold of 40 years ago, but she clearly embodies the essential qualities of all our astronauts, then and now, the bold, restless, pioneering spirit that had made our Nation great. And as we've already heard, the story of her life is a story of challenges set and challenges met. That is also the story of our space program.

When it comes to exploring space and the unknown, the word "impossible" is not in our vocabulary. We have always recognized the limitless possibilities of seemingly impossible challenges.

A generation ago, President Kennedy said within a decade we would send an American to the Moon and bring him safely back to Earth. By 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had left their footprints on the Moon. We said, in our time, that we would visit the planets of the solar system. And last Fourth of July all Americans, with the help of a robot called Sojourner, got a chance to rove the surface of Mars and meet red rocks named Scooby Doo and Barnacle Bill.

Thirty-six years after John Glenn made his history-making space flight in a capsule the size of a compact car, he's not only going back into space, but we are poised to build an international space station the size of a football field. America has indeed become, as President Kennedy hoped, the world's leading spacefaring nation, a distinction we must keep in the 21st century.

Colonel Collins will lead us in this effort, commanding a mission to launch a telescope that will allow us to peer into the deepest reaches of outer space. Our balanced budget for 1999 will support, in fact, 28 new space missions, missions that will help us decipher more of the mysteries of black holes, of ancient stars, and of our Earth itself. Indeed, later today NASA will be making some exciting new announcements on the results of the Lunar Prospector mission, currently orbiting the Moon.

The knowledge we gain from our space missions could help us treat diseases here on Earth, from osteoporosis to ovarian cancer. It could make our farms more productive. It could help us meet the challenge of global climate change. And perhaps help us to uncover the very origins of life itself.

All Americans, especially our young people, have important roles to play in making these plans a reality. They have to begin by taking their studies, especially their studies in math and science, seriously.

Last week we learned that our leading spacefaring Nation is not faring very well when it comes to achievement of high school seniors in math and science. This is unacceptable. As we prepare for an information age that will require every student to master not just the basics of reading and math but algebra, geometry, physics, and computer science, I call on every parent, every school, every teacher to set higher expectations for our children. And I call upon all of our students—and I know that Hillary and Eileen will today—to take these challenging courses, so that we can all be prepared for the known and still unknown challenges of the future. And I call on all young girls across America and their parents to take inspiration from Colonel Collins' achievement.

Let me remind you of something she was too modest to say. She has a distinguished degree from Syracuse University. She came up through the ROTC program. She began her high school education in community college. I want every child in this country to know that we have opened the doors of college to all Americans, that community college is virtually free for all children now, that everybody can make this start and nobody needs to put blinders on their aspirations for the future. She is proof.

I want to say, especially to the little girls who will hear Eileen Collins and these who will see her and to their parents, let's remember that at a time when very few girls were taking the hardest math and science courses, Colonel Collins was taking them and mastering them. She did in part because of the unfailing support of her parents who set high expectations and told her she could do anything she set her mind to. She never gave up, and one by one her dreams came true.

I think our country owes a great debt of gratitude to her parents, and I hope that more will follow her direction. And perhaps with her welljustified new fame, notoriety, the greatest mark Colonel Collins will make will not just be written in the stars but here on Earth, in the mind of every young girl with a knack for numbers, the gift for science, and a fearless spirit. Let us work to make sure that for every girl and every boy, dreams and ambitions can be realized, and even the sky is no longer the limit.

Thank you very much.

First female Shuttle commander named

Eileen Collins is to be the world's first woman commander of the Space Shuttle.

The US space agency Nasa said she will command the shuttle Columbia on a mission to carry the X-ray Hubble telescope into space in December this year.

Ms Collins told a news conference she felt privileged to be chosen as a Space Shuttle commander.

"Since I was a child I've dreamed about space. I've admired pilots and astronauts, and I've admired explorers of all kinds. It was only a dream of mine that I would some day be one of them and have these kinds of opportunities," she said.

She also thanked all her "role models", women astronauts and pilots who were pioneers in their field.

Making the announcement at the White House, the President's wife Hillary Clinton - who also wanted to be an astronaut when she was in her teens - said: "She made history because of her skill and determination to be not the best woman for the job but simply the best person ... she made it because she ignored those who said it wasn't cool or feminine to study math and science"

COLDPLAY

"Viva La Vida"

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
Missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I have been undecided about describing my situation in a blog. Nothing else is working though, so I might as well.

I choose to title my blog Homeless Veteran of Microsoft because my journey into this world of hurt began there, at Microsoft.

Bush Chooses Prosecutor to Reshape FBI

Law: U.S. Atty. Mueller is picked to lead an agency that is struggling with its credibility. A bruising nomination fight is probably avoided.

July 06, 2001 JAMES GERSTENZANG and ERIC LICHTBLAU TIMES STAFF WRITERS

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Thursday chose Robert Mueller, an experienced government prosecutor who is now the U.S. attorney in San Francisco, to direct the FBI and wrestle with the spate of problems that has plagued the bureau.

In nominating Mueller, 56, for the 10-year term to succeed Louis J. Freeh, Bush took a course likely to avoid an angry, politically tinged confirmation battle in the Senate. Still, the hearing on Mueller's nomination is virtually certain to turn into an in-depth look at the agency's recent blunders.

As Mueller stood beside him in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, Bush referred obliquely to the travails the bureau has encountered.

Prosecutor nominated to head FBI / `No-nonsense' ex-Marine

MICHAEL HEDGES, Houston Chronicle WashingtonBureau Staff

FRI 07/06/2001 Houston Chronicle

WASHINGTON - Robert S. Mueller III, a career prosecutor and former Marine with a reputation for making tough decisions, was called upon by President Bush on Thursday to resurrect an FBI beset by high-profile blunders.

After a lengthy search, Mueller was picked to head the FBI at a critical point in the history of the nation's largest law enforcement agency. Those who know him said he has the right qualities for the job.

"He is a tough, no-nonsense former Marine who does not brook incompetence," said former Washington U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova.

"One thing I would emphasize about Bob Mueller: He is a guy who will know how to fire people when that is necessary."

In a brief White House ceremony, Bush said, "The FBI must be ready to protect Americans from new types of criminals who will use modern technology to defraud and disrupt our lives . . . And it must do all this with a firm commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of our citizens."

The president said, "Bob Mueller's experience and character convinced me that he's ready to shoulder these responsibilities."

FBI is asked to probe allegations women were offered cash to accuse Mueller of sex assault

UPDATED: Tue., Oct. 30, 2018, 8:20 p.m.

By Chris Sommerfeldt

New York Daily News

Robert Mueller recently asked the FBI to investigate a possible scam in which women were offered cash to fabricate sexual misconduct accusations against him, a representative for the special counsel revealed Tuesday.

In a rare statement, Mueller’s top spokesman, Peter Carr, said the special counsel team became aware of the alleged payoff scheme last week.

“We immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation,” Carr said, calling the claims against Mueller “false.”

The FBI declined to comment.

A U.S. official confirmed to the New York Daily News that the special counsel’s office learned of the apparent scheme from reporters inquiring about receiving emails from a Florida woman who alleged right-wing conspiracy theorist Jack Burkman had offered her more than $20,000 to come forward with misconduct claims against Mueller, who’s probing possible collusion between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Russian government.

The woman’s email, which was screen-grabbed and posted on social media by several journalists, states someone identifying himself as Bill Christensen recently called and asked her questions about Mueller, whom she said she worked for as a paralegal at the San Francisco offices of law firm Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw & Pittman in the 1970s.

Christensen, speaking in a British accent, told the unidentified woman he represented Burkman, a GOP lobbyist infamous for perpetuating a debunked conspiracy theory claiming Hillary Clinton was responsible for the 2016 death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.

“He then offered to pay off all of my credit card debt, plus bring me a check for $20,000 if I would do one thing,” the woman said.

She said Christensen was reluctant to explain specifics and urged her to download Signal, a secure messaging app.

“I downloaded the app and he called me on that app a few minutes later,” the woman said. “He said (and I will never forget exactly what it was), ‘I want you to make accusations of sexual misconduct and workplace harassment against Robert Mueller, and I want you to sign a sworn affidavit to that effect.’”

The woman says she “immediately” hung up and deleted the app.

“I didn’t see Robert Mueller very much when I worked at Pillsbury, but when I did see him, he was always very polite to me, and was never inappropriate,” she said. “I don’t know what these people are looking for but I’m not going to be part of some kind of Washington, D.C., drama for any price.”

Mueller worked as an attorney at Pillsbury between 1973 and 1976. A spokesman for the law firm did not respond to emailed questions.

Within minutes of Carr’s statement, Burkman posted a video on Facebook announcing he plans to host a news conference in Arlington, Va., on Thursday focused on “the first of the sex assault victims of Robert Mueller.”

“Mueller has done bad things to a number of women, the first of whom is coming out this Thursday,” Burkman said, without providing evidence or specifics.

Burkman later tweeted that “the allegation of paying a woman” is “false” but wouldn’t comment on whether Christensen works for him or who he is.

NBC News reported the odd suspected plot may have been concocted by Surefire Intelligence, a self-professed “intel agency” with a website whose domain records contain an email address belonging to Jacob Wohl, a pro-Trump troll known for spreading misinformation and far-right conspiracy theories. The website also has a contact number that redirects to a voicemail that belongs to Wohl’s mother.

Wohl told the Daily News in a Twitter message he has nothing to do with the alleged plot and that he only tweeted about the matter ahead of Carr’s announcement because he had heard of it “from a friend of a friend who’s a lobbyist in DC.” The 20-year-old pro-Trump activist stopped responding following the Surefire Intelligence revelations.

Separately, Vermont Law School professor and author Jennifer Taub confirmed on Twitter she had been contacted by Surefire Intelligence about her “past encounters” with Mueller. She said she has never met Mueller.

Trump and his allies have long tried to discredit Mueller, accusing him of orchestrating a politically motivated “witch hunt,” even though his probe into the president’s campaign has produced dozens of indictments against Trump associates and Russian government operatives, including Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Mueller is widely expected to deliver key findings of his collusion probe following next week’s congressional midterm elections.

I started thinking this morning about a jacket I used to wear long ago. I bought it around the time Lynn and I started bicycling, which I think was in 1999. I wore that jacket every time I went cycling and some parts of it were green and other parts blue. I remember one time, after I had been wearing it for a long time, I noticed that the logo emblem on one side of the chest was labeled as “Brooks.” I can remember feeling something like surprise that it was labeled “Brooks.”

7 Astronauts Fly High in Orbit, Draw Blood in Name of Science

October 19, 1993 From Associated Press

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — Columbia and its seven astronauts blasted off on a belated mission Monday, carrying 48 rats, that will be poked, prodded and in some cases decapitated by guillotine and dissected in orbit.

All in the name of science.

Five of the rats are part of UC Irvine research on the effects of weightlessness. Scientists Kenneth Baldwin and Vincent Caiozzo have designated a series of muscle mass tests for the five, hoping to learn more about why and how loss of gravity causes muscles to change in humans and animals.

The astronauts aboard Columbia quickly got started on their 14 days of space checkups, drawing blood from one another, measuring their blood pressure and noting any symptoms of motion sickness.

The mission--the longest ever planned for a space shuttle--is intended to help scientists develop measures for counteracting the debilitating effects of space travel, including changes in muscle mass. Astronauts will test the UCI rats in space, while Baldwin and Caiozzo are simultaneously testing comparison rats on the ground at UC Irvine labs.

In an interview Monday in Irvine, Baldwin said the UCI researchers believe the tests will result in knowledge useful for humans on land as well as in space.

"We think the information we learn from the tests will apply to people who go through stages of aging, as well as to people who have injuries and have a dramatic reduction in physical activities," Baldwin said.

The two Irvine scientists are scheduled to greet Columbia when it lands at Edwards Air Force Base in Los Angeles County on Nov. 1. They will then examine firsthand their lab rats and make additional tests.

Columbia blasted from its Florida launch pad Monday morning after two previous delays.

"Guys, the third time's a charm," orbiter test director Brian Monborne assured the crew before liftoff.

Delayed 10 seconds by a stray Navy plane, the 2,000-ton spaceship rose from its seaside pad at 7:53 a.m. PDT and tore through three decks of clouds on its way to a 176-mile-high orbit.

Two crew members had catheters threading through their veins for launch--Martin Fettman, the first U.S. veterinarian in space, and Shannon Lucid, a biochemist who became the first woman to fly in space four times. The catheters were hooked to white backpacks with floating cables, making the two look like a pair of bees.

In addition to the UCI rats being used for tests of muscle mass, other rats on the Columbia will be tested for such things as bone loss in space.

Throughout the mission, Fettman and the others will draw blood from the 2- to 3-month-old male rodents, inject isotopes and hormones, and collect the animal droppings to measure calcium content, an indicator of bone loss.

Astronauts Check Body Changes During Tests on Weightlessness

October 20, 1993 From Associated Press

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — Astronauts aboard the shuttle Columbia drank water laced with oxygen isotopes, nitrogen and calcium Tuesday in tests to monitor body changes during weightlessness.

The crew members also gave each other shots of chemicals that were traced through their bodies to measure changes in blood volume, kidneys, bones and muscles. Blood, urine and saliva samples also were collected on the first full day of the planned two-week medical research mission.

In another test, the astronauts monitored their heartbeats with an ultrasound device developed by David Wolf, one of the crew's two physicians. They also exercised on a stationary cycle and collected the droppings of laboratory rats.

The crew had to open the door on one of the two animal enclosures and turn on a fan to cool the 24 inhabitants. The enclosure was a few degrees warmer than desired.

"All the rats look pretty healthy and happy," said Columbia's veterinarian, Martin Fettman. "We're just a little concerned about the rats in cage two because of the vacuum, the hurricane that goes by them with the cage door open and the (fan) on."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration wants the five men and two women to collect as much data as possible early in the flight, while the body is still adapting to weightlessness. Scientists said that is a major limitation of Russia's space program--even though cosmonauts have spent as much as a year in orbit, it is difficult for them to gather medical data during the first few days.

Muscles weaken in space and bones soften. NASA wants to develop measures to counteract these and other side effects, such as diminished immunity, reduced red blood cells and loss of balance.

The only other shuttle mission devoted to medical research, a nine-day flight in 1991, indicated among other things that the body produces enough muscle protein in weightlessness but that the protein breaks down faster.

Tuesday, like launch day, was full of experiments. "I think that we'll be fortunate if we can keep up this pace," NASA program scientist Frank Sulzman said. "We know that for a 14-day mission we have to schedule things so that we don't have the crew working nonstop."

Chapter 12

Nifty. Wolgast shuddered. A nifty nuclear power source in Amy’s neck. He turned to Sykes, who was watching with a look of caution.

“Is this what happened to the others? Carter and the rest.”

“They were … preliminary,” Sykes said.

“Preliminary to what?”

He paused. “To Amy.”

Fortes explained the situation: Amy was in a coma. No one had expected this, and her fever was too high and had gone on too long. Her kidney and liver values were depressed.

“We were hoping you could talk to her,” Sykes said. “This sometimes helps with patients in a prolonged state of unconsciousness. Doyle tells us that she’s pretty … bonded with you.”

A two-stage air lock connected them to Amy’s room. Sykes and Fortes led him into the first chamber. An orange biosuit was hanging on the wall, the empty helmet tipped forward, like a man with a broken neck.

The Passage: A Novel (2010)

Justin Cronin

(from internet transcript)

FIFTY-FIVE

In the end, they could only take Olson at his word. They simply had no choice.

They divvied up the weapons and split into two groups. Olson and his men would storm the room from ground level while Peter and the others entered from above. The space they called the ring had once been the prison’s central courtyard, covered by a domed roof. Part of the roof had fallen away, leaving the space open to the outside, but the original structural girders were intact. Suspended from these girders, fifteen meters above the ring, was a series of catwalks, once used by the guards to monitor the floor below. These were arranged like the spokes of a wheel with ducts running above them, wide enough for a person to crawl through.

Once they had secured the catwalk, Peter and the others would descend by flights of stairs at the north and south ends of the room. These led to three tiers of caged balconies encircling the yard. This would be where most of the crowd would be, Olson explained, with perhaps a dozen stationed on the floor to operate the fireline.

The viral, Babcock, would enter through the opening in the roof, on the east side of the room. The cattle, four head, would be driven in from the opposite end, through a gap in the fireline, followed by the two people slated for the sacrifice.

Four and two, Olson said, for each new moon. As long as we give him the four and two, he keeps the Many away.

The Many: that was what Olson called the other virals. The ones of Babcock, he explained. The ones of his blood. He controls them? Peter asked, not really believing any of it yet; it was all too fantastic—though even as he formed the question, he felt his skepticism giving way. If Olson was telling the truth, a great deal suddenly made sense. The Haven itself, its impossible existence; the strange behavior of the residents, like people carrying a terrible secret; even the virals themselves and the feeling Peter had harbored his whole life that they were more than the sum of their parts. He doesn’t just control them, Olson answered. As he spoke, a heaviness seemed to come over him; it was as if he’d waited years to tell the story. He is them, Peter.

The Passage: A Novel (2010)

Justin Cronin

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 51

He was Babcock and he was forever. He was one of Twelve and also the Other, the one above and behind, the Zero. He was the night of nights and he had been Babcock before he became what he was. Before the great hunger that was like time itself inside him, a current in the blood, endless and needful, infinite and without border, a dark wing spreading over the world.

He was made of Many. A thousand-thousand-thousand scattered over the night sky, like the stars. He was one of Twelve and also the Other, the Zero, but his children were within him also, the ones that carried the seed of his blood, one seed of Twelve; they moved as he moved, they thought as he thought, in their minds was an empty space of forgetting in which he lay, each to a one, saying, You will not die. You are a part of me, as I am a part of you. You will drink the blood of the world and fill me up.

They were his to command. When they ate, he ate. When they slept, he slept. They were the We, the Babcock, and they were forever as he was forever, all part of the Twelve and the Other, the Zero. They dreamed his dark dream with him.

He remembered a time, before he Became. The time of the little house, in the place called Desert Wells. The time of pain and silence and the woman, his mother, the mother of Babcock. He remembered small things—textures, sensations, visions. A box of golden sunlight falling on a square of carpet. A worn place on the stoop that fit his sneakered foot just so, and the ridges of rust on the rail that cut the skin of his fingers. He remembered his fingers. He remembered the smell of his mother’s cigarettes in the kitchen where she talked and watched her stories, and the people on the television, their faces huge and close, their eyes wide and wet, the women with their lips painted and shimmering, like glossy pieces of fruit. And her voice, always her voice:

Be quiet now, goddamnit. Cain’t you see I’m trying to watch this? You make such a goddamn racket, it’s a wonder I don’t lose my goddamn mind.

He remembered being quiet, so quiet.

He remembered her hands, Babcock’s mother’s hands, and the starry bursts of pain when she struck him, struck him again. He remembered flying, his body lifted on a cloud of pain, and the hitting and the slapping and the burning. Always the burning. Don’t you cry now. You be a man. You cry and I’ll give you something to cry about, so much the worse for you, Giles Babcock. Her smoky breath, close to his face. The look of the red-hot tip of her cigarette where she rolled it against the skin of his hand, and the crisp wet sound of its burning, like cereal when he poured milk into it, the same crackle and pop. The smell of it mingling with the jets of smoke that puffed from her nostrils. And the way the words all stopped up inside him, so that the pain could end—so he could be a man, as she said.

It was her voice he remembered most of all. Babcock’s mother’s voice. His love for her was like a room without doors, filled with the scraping sound of her words, her talk-talk-talk. Taunting him, tearing into him, like the knife he took from the drawer that day as she sat at the table in the kitchen of the little house in the place called Desert Wells, talking and laughing and laughing and talking and eating her mouthfuls of smoke.

The boy isn’t just dumb. I tell you, he’s been struck dumb.

He was happy, so happy, he’d never felt such happiness in his life as the knife passed into her, the white skin of her throat, the smooth outer layer and the hard gristle below. And as he dug and pushed with his blade, the love he felt for her lifted from his mind so that he could see what she was at last—that she was a being of flesh and blood and bone. All her words and talk-talk-talk moving inside him, filling him up to bursting. They tasted like blood in his mouth, sweet living things.

They sent him away. He wasn’t a boy after all, he was a man; he was a man with a mind and a knife, and they told him to die—die, Babcock, for what you have done.

Chapter 53

“Theo.”

He was in the kitchen again. The drawer was open; the knife lay gleaming there. Tucked in the drawer like a baby in its crib.

“Theo, come on now. I’m telling you, all you got to do is pick it up and do her. You do her and this will all be over.”

The voice. The voice that knew his name, that seemed to crawl around inside his head, waking and sleeping. Part of his mind was in the kitchen, while another part was in the cell, the cell where he had been for days and days, fighting sleep, fighting the dream.

“Is that so fucking hard? Am I not being absolutely clear here?”

He opened his eyes; the kitchen vanished. He was sitting on the edge of the cot. The cell with its door and its stinking hole that ate his piss and shit. Who knew what time it was, what day, what month, what year. He had been in this place forever.

“Theo? Are you listening to me?”

He licked his lips, tasting blood. Had he bitten his tongue? “What do you want?”

A sigh from the far side of the door. “I gotta say, Theo. You do impress me. Nobody holds out like this. I think you’ve got some kind of record going.”

Theo said nothing. What was the point? The voice never answered his questions. If there even was a voice. Sometimes he thought it was just something in his head.

“I mean some, sure,” the voice went on. “In some cases you could say it goes against the grain, carving the old bitch up.” A dark chuckle, like something from the bottom of a pit. “Believe me, I’ve seen people do the damnedest shit.”

It was terrible, Theo thought, what staying awake could do to a person’s mind. You went without sleep long enough, you made your brain stand up and walk around day after day after day no matter how tired you felt—you did push-ups and sit-ups on the cold stone floor until your muscles burned, you scratched and slapped yourself and dug at your own flesh with your bloodied nails to keep awake—and before long you didn’t know which was which, if you were awake or asleep. Everything got blended together. A sensation like pain—only worse, because it wasn’t a pain in your body; the pain was your mind and your mind was you. You were pain itself.

“You mark my words, Theo. You do not want to go there. That was not a story with a happy ending.”

He felt his awareness folding again, taking him down into sleep. He dug his nails hard into his palm. Stay. Awake. Theo. Because there was something worse than staying awake, he knew.

“Sooner or later everybody comes around, is what I’m saying, Theo.”

The Passage: A Novel (2010)

Justin Cronin

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 5

Which was why Cole had come to see him. He needed somebody like Richards, he explained, someone off the books, but not only that. Someone practical, with practical skills. People skills, you might say. Maybe not right away, but in the coming months, as the pieces gathered to form the whole. Security was paramount. Security was at the absolute top of Cole’s list. That’s why he had come all this way and put on this ridiculous luau shirt. To get the buy-in. To get this piece of the puzzle nailed down.

All well and good if things had gone according to plan, which they hadn’t, not by a long shot, starting with the fact that Cole was dead. A lot of people were dead, in fact, and some—well, it was hard to say just what they were. Only three people had come out of that jungle alive, not counting Fanning, who was already well on his way to being … well, what? More than Cole had bargained for, that was for sure. There might have been more survivors, but the order from Special Weapons was clear: anybody who didn’t make it to the dust-off was bacon with a side of toast. The missile that screamed in over the mountains had made sure of that. Richards wondered what Cole would have said if he’d known he wouldn’t be one of them.

By then—by the time Fanning was safely locked away, Lear was on-site in Colorado, and everything that had happened in South America had been wiped from the system—Richards had learned what it was all about. VSA, for Very Slow Aging. Richards had to hand it to whoever had dreamed up that one. VSA: Very Silly Abbreviation. A virus or, rather, a family of viruses, hidden away in the world, in birds or monkeys or sitting on a dirty toilet seat somewhere. A virus that could, with the proper refinements, restore the thymus gland to its full and proper function. Richards had read Lear’s early papers, the ones that had gotten Cole’s attention, the first one in Science and the second in Journal of Paleovirology, hypothesizing the existence of “an agent that could significantly lengthen human life span and increase physical robustness and has done so, at select moments, throughout human history.” Richards didn’t need a PhD in microbiology to know that it was risky stuff: vampire stuff, though no one at Special Weapons ever used the word. If it hadn’t been written by a scientist of Lear’s stature, a Harvard microbiologist no less, it all would have sounded like something from the Weekly World News. But still, something about it hit a nerve. As a kid Richards had read his share of such stories, not just the comic books—Tales from the Crypt and Dark Shadows and all the rest—but the original Bram Stoker, and seen the movies too. A bunch of silliness and bad sex, he knew that even then, and yet wasn’t there something about them that struck a deep chord of recognition, even of memory? The teeth, the blood hunger, the immortal union with darkness—what if these things weren’t fantasy but recollection or even instinct, a feeling etched over eons into human DNA, of some dark power that lay within the human animal? A power that could be reactivated, refined, brought under control?

The subway. That is incredible. I was taking a nap one evening about 3 years ago and I jumped out of bed and went to a place I had not gone before and a security guard opened the door for me and I made some incredibly relevant observations. I had thought about that scene before after that event but only just now watching that scene on television did I see a detail that defies rational explanation as to why I knew to be there at that location at that specific time.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 10/1/2006 6:48 PM
I’m guessing I didn’t have anymore Sea Service time, which reflects, as I recall, the time a Sailor is assigned to a ship of the fleet, because I was assigned to a SEAL team from the time I returned in 1987 to 1990. I guess further my Sea Service, although interspersed with temporary duty assignments such as shuttle missions, resumed when I was assigned to the Arleigh Burke in 1991. My DD-214 doesn’t reflect that because, first of all, it is about Kerry Burgess, but also because it only reflects the period ending 5/14/90. I may have still flown as a fighter and bomber pilot after 1987, but I don’t think that was ever my primary role again after returning. I am not sure what to think about the thoughts I have had about flying the Apache gunship. Maybe that is something else I did occasionally.

D.C. Navy Yard gun attack kills 12, injures 8; alleged shooter dead, is ID’d as Aaron Alexis

By Ashley Halsey III , Peter Hermann and Clarence Williams September 16, 2013

A gunman killed a dozen people as the workday began at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, creating an improbable moment of horror at a military facility with armed guards at every gate and leaving investigators seeking clues about what spurred the attack.

The FBI identified the shooter as Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, who in 2011 received a general discharge from the Navy Reserve, a designation that usually signals a problem in his record. Alexis was arrested but not charged in a gun incident in Seattle in 2004 but still had a security clearance with a military contractor that allowed him access to the Navy Yard, officials said.

The Passage: A Novel (2010)

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 5

Richards could feel it now; the whole thing was adrift. Part of the problem was the sheer boredom of it all. You couldn’t drop eighty men onto a mountainside with nothing to do but count rabbit skins and ask them to stay put and keep their mouths shut forever.

And then there were the dreams.

Richards had them, too, or thought he did. He never quite remembered. But he sometimes woke up feeling like something strange had happened in the night, as if he’d taken an unplanned trip and only just returned. That’s what had happened with the two sweeps who’d gone AWOL. The castrati had been Richards’s idea, and for a time it had worked out nicely; you’d never meet a more docile bunch of fellows, mellow as the Buddha every one, and when the game was finally over, nobody that anyone was ever going to miss.

The Washington Navy Yard shooting, as it happened

As investigators look into the history of Aaron Alexis, the man believed to be responsible for the Washington Navy Yard shooting that killed 12 and wounded eight, a portrait of a disturbed man with a history of mental health issues has emerged.

Alexis appears to not have left a manifesto or suicide note behind, so investigators are relying on what they find in his personal history to explain why such a tragedy occurred.

Another lingering issue is how Alexis was able to pull off a massacre in the heart of America's capital, inside one of the command buildings of its Navy.

Navy Yard shooting victims included Navy veteran, mother of two

Navy Yard helicopter crew recounts harrowing rescue

Below is an account of the event, compiled by CBSNews.com from news reports, investigators, and eyewitness statements.

Aaron Alexis moved to the Washington, D.C. area about three weeks before Monday's massacre. He was working for the Florida-based IT consulting firm The Experts, doing part-time work at the Washington Navy Yard as a subcontractor, helping the military update computer systems. He had been going to school and doing IT work on and off since leaving the fulltime Navy Reserves in 2011 after a four-year stint. His last post in the Navy was in Fort Worth, where he repaired aircraft.

In Washington, D.C., he shared a room with other contractors at a hotel just a few blocks from the shooting scene, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. Investigators say the roommates were not involved in the attack.

On Saturday, two days before the massacre, Alexis visited Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Virginia, which is about 15 miles from the Navy Yard. An attorney for the gun range told the Associated Press he rented a rifle, bought bullets, and took target practice. He later bought a shotgun and 24 shells.

The gun range's attorney said the store ran a federal background check on Alexis and it came back clear.

On the morning of the shooting, investigators say Aaron Alexis drove to the Navy Yard base and walked directly to building 197, the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters. He had worked there every day in the previous week.

Surveillance cameras captured Alexis using his security card to open a door.

The Experts' CEO, Thomas Hoshko, told the Associated Press that Alexis had "no personal issues," and he confirmed that Alexis had been granted a "secret" clearance by the Defense Security Service five years ago.

Alexis's clearance -- lower than "top secret" -- doesn't need to be renewed for 10 years. Still, the company said it hired outside vendors twice to check Alexis' criminal history. Alexis' background check "came back clear," Hoshko said.

When Alexis opened the door using his security card, he was carrying a bag, which investigators believe contained the disassembled shotgun he would later use to launch his attack, reports CBS News correspondent John Miller. It is still not clear whether this was the same shotgun he bought two days earlier in Virginia.

After getting inside the building, Alexis headed to a bathroom, where he put the shotgun back together. He then employed some of the very same tactics he learned in his military training.

Police say it appears Alexis headed straight to the fourth floor that overlooks an atrium that was filled with employees having breakfast or coffee. The first call to 911 happened around 8:15 a.m. Investigators believe he chose the spot because it offered a position of tactical advantage, allowing him to shoot down into the atrium or across to other walkways.

Alexis stayed there, firing away, until he was confronted by responding police and security officers. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said it took about seven minutes for the first officers to arrive on the scene.

A D.C. police officer was among the first to exchange shots with him and was wounded.

NCIS agents also confronted Alexis and fired. Alexis took to the stairwells, moving from level to level of the atrium, continuing to shoot. Alexis shot a security officer and took his weapon.

Once he left the atrium, teams of police searched, with no contact. For a long time -- some estimate as much as 15 to 20 minutes -- police searched until a team made up of a D.C. police officer and a U.S. Park Police officer suddenly came face to face with Alexis in an upper floor hallway. They opened fire, killing him.
