TV News Roundup: ‘The Passage’ Sets January Premiere Date on Fox

By MARGEAUX SIPPELL

New television thriller “The Passage” will premiere Monday, Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. EST/PST on Fox. Based on the best-selling trilogy by Justin Cronin, the action-drama series is written by Liz Heldens of “Friday Night Lights.” Following a secret medical experiment called Project Noah, scientists experiment with a virus that could either cure all diseases or wipe out the entire human race.

Amy was six. She was quiet, barely talked most of the time, but she'd taught herself to read some, from looking at the same books over and over, and could do her numbers. One time they were watching "Wheel of Fortune", and when the time came for the woman to spend the money she'd won, the little girl knew just what she could buy, that she couldn't afford the vacation to Cancun but could have the living room set with enough money left over for the his-and-her golf clubs. Jeannette thought it was probably smart of Amy to figure this out, maybe more than smart, and she guessed she should probably be in school, but Jeanette didn't know where there were any schools around there. It was all auto-body-repair and pawn shops and motels like the one they lived in, the SuperSix. The owner was a man who looked a lot like Elvis Presley, not the handsome young one but the old fat one

it looks like we've been militarized. I suppose this was inevitable, at least since I took USAMRIID's money. (And we're talking about a lot of money - aerial recon doesn't come cheap: twenty thousand bucks to retarget a satellite, and that will buy you only thirty minutes worth.) But still, it seems like overkill. We were making our final preparations for departure yesterday when a helicopter dropped out of the sky at base camp ad who should step off but a squad of Special Forces, all done up like they were ready to take an enemy pillbox: the jungle camo, the green and black warpaint, the infrared scopes and high-power gas-recoil M-19s - all of it. Some very gung ho guys. Trailing the pack is a man in a suit, a civilian, who looks to be in charge. He struts across the field to were I'm standing and I see how young he is, not even thirty. He's also as tan as a tennis pro. What's he doing with a squad of special ops? "You the vampire guy? he asks me. You know how I feel about that word. Paul - just try to get an NAS grant with "vampire" anywhere in the paperwork.

But just to be polite, and because, what the hell, he's backed by enough firepower to overthrow a small government, I tell him, sure, that's me. "Mark Cole, Dr. Lear," he says, and shakes my hand, wearing a big grin. "I've come a long way just to meet you. Guess what? You're now a major." I'm thinking, a major what? And what are these guys doing here? "This is a civilian scientific expedition," I tell him. "Not anymore," he says.

Stephen King calling … Justin Cronin

By Maggie Galehouse on June 8, 2010 at 2:46 PM

In the “one of the most amazing things that could ever happen to a writer” department, local author and Rice prof Justin Cronin appeared on Good Morning America today (Tues., June 8) to talk up his new book, The Passage.

Then Stephen King called.

During the interview — while Cronin was on the air — King called in to say that he loved the book and hoped that it would sell a million copies.

Now, King had already weighed in on The Passage, the first book in Cronin’s post-apocalyptic trilogy. On the back of the hardcover, there’s a fat, yummy quote from King saying a lot of great things about the story, including:

Read fifteen pages and you will find yourself captivated; read thirty and you will find yourself taken prisoner and reading late into the night. It has the vividness that only epic works of fantasy and imagination can achieve.

You can’t really ask for more than that.

But on the very day his book was released, Cronin got more: a live endorsement from the man who legitimized a certain type of story, whose skill as a writer and storyteller forced the literati to take him — and the types of books he writes — seriously.

King’s plug, along with Cronin’s page-turner of a tale, is money in the bank.

Dorothy Eady

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dorothy Louise Eady, also known as Omm Sety or Om Seti (16 January 1904 – 21 April 1981), was keeper of the Abydos Temple of Seti I and draughtswoman for the Department of Egyptian Antiquities. She is especially well known for her belief that in a previous life she had been a priestess in ancient Egypt, as well as her considerable historical research at Abydos.

Other opinions

Carl Sagan considered Omm Sety as "a lively, intelligent, dedicated woman who made real contributions to Egyptology. This is true whether her belief in reincarnation is fact or fantasy." He viewed such phenomena as being rooted in fear of death and that humankind has commonly sought reassurance in some form of afterlife.

AYELBORNE: Welcome.

KIRK: Reception committee?

SPOCK: It would seem so.

AYELBORNE: You are our visitors. Welcome, welcome. I am Ayelborne.

KIRK: I am Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise, representing the United Federation of Planets. This is my first officer Mister Spock.

AYELBORNE: You are most welcome, my friend.

KIRK: I would like to speak to someone in authority.

AYELBORNE: We don't have anybody in authority, but I am the chairman of the Council of Elders. Perhaps I would do.

(Ayelborne and four other older men seat themselves at a simple wooden table. Beautifully polished, though.)

KIRK: Gentlemen, my government has informed me that the Klingons are expected to move against your planet with the objective of making it a base of operation against the Federation. My mission, frankly, is to keep them from doing it.

AYELBORNE: What you're saying, Captain, is that we seem to have a choice between dealing with you or your enemies.

KIRK: No, sir. With the Federation, you have a choice. You have none with the Klingons. The Klingons are a military dictatorship. War is their way of life. Life under the Klingon rule would be very unpleasant. We offer you protection.

CLAYMARE: We thank you for your altruistic offer, Captain, but we really do not need your protection.

AYELBORNE: We are a simple people, Captain. We have nothing that anybody could want.

KIRK: Of course we blew it up. Deliberately.

AYELBORNE: But that was violence.

KIRK: We did it to show you that you can fight back. You don't have to be sheep, you can be wolves.

CLAYMARE: Terrible to destroy.

KIRK: History is full of examples of civil populations fighting back successfully against a military dictatorship. We may not be able to destroy the Klingons, but we can tie them up. Blow up their installations, disrupt their communications, make Organia useless to them.

SPOCK: Our fleet will eventually arrive. In the meantime, the battle is ours. It can be a successful one.

AYELBORNE: Captain, I implore you never to do such a thing again.

KIRK: Why? Are you afraid of retribution? Does your personal freedom mean so little to you?

AYELBORNE: How little you understand us, Captain.

KIRK: All I understand is that you apparently don't have the backbone to fight and protect your loved ones.

KIRK: But what about this planet? The fields, the buildings, this citadel?

SPOCK: Conventionalisations, I should say. Useless to the Organians. Created so that visitors such as ourselves, could have conventional points of reference.

KOR, the Klingon commander: But is all of this possible?

SPOCK: We have seen it with our own eyes. I should say the Organians are as far above us on the evolutionary scale as we are above the amoeba.

KIRK: Well, Commander, I guess that takes care of the war. Obviously, the Organians aren't going to let us fight.

KOR: A shame, Captain. It would have been glorious.

ROBERT Picard: Father understood better than anybody else the danger of losing those values which we hold most precious.

Captain PICARD: I don't see that you have to lose anything just by adding a convenience.

ROBERT: You wouldn't, but in my view, life is already too convenient.

MARIE Picard: This is a very old argument.

RENE Picard: I wrote a report on starships for school.

MARIE: And he won a ribbon for it.

RENE: The teacher said it was one of the best he'd ever heard.

PICARD: Good for you, Uncle. You know what? I once wrote a report about starships when I was about your age.

RENE: Did you win a ribbon too?

PICARD: I don't recall.

ROBERT: And I don't find your modesty very unconvincing, brother. Of course you won the ribbon. You always did.
