The mediocrity that roared

Three books probe the mystery at the core of the angry, ordinary guy who might just be our next president.

You’ve got to have a little sympathy for J.H. Hatfield. The would-be boss-killer turned George W. Bush biographer had a tough job: to make sense of the life of the feckless frat boy turned Texas governor who now wants to be president.


There was another cause that got his goat at Yale, though he wouldn’t be able to articulate his outrage for some years: the spectacle of privileged youth protesting the institutions of their privilege. This utterly cheesed the young Bush, first at Yale, then at Harvard. Minutaglio quotes him later, describing his sense of anger at his left-wing classmates: “These are the ones who felt so guilty that they had been given so many blessings in life — like an Andover or a Yale education — that they felt they should overcompensate by trying to give everyone else in life the same thing.”

He would find solace, years later, in the works of David Horowitz, a ’60s radical who would become famous for denouncing the decade in the same outsized rhetoric that he earlier used to promote it. George W. resonated to the critiques of Horowitz and other reformed radicals, who gave him solace that his inherited privilege should be enjoyed, not resisted, or — God forbid — redistributed.

(Ironically, his discomfort with Yale’s prevailing liberalism helped the son of privilege craft an unlikely self-image as an oppressed Texas outsider, which would serve him well personally and especially politically in the years to come.)

Despite how many others have covered it, it’s still worth spending some time on those entrepreneurial years. These authors, as well as reporters for the Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, the New York Times and, yes, Salon, have sniffed around Bush’s vaguely dodgy investments, stock trades, buyouts and mergers, and none has come up with a blockbuster story to tell.

Here’s the story in a nutshell (the narrative comes from Minutaglio, since Bush is mostly silent on these issues and Hatfield’s book, which hews to essentially the same story, was withdrawn by the publisher and thus shouldn’t be relied on for factual accuracy): Bush mostly cleaned up his act, went to Harvard Business School (“the West Point of Capitalism,” a Cambridge cab driver told him) and became a loyal foot soldier for the profit motive. He drove out to Midland in a 1970 Cutlass to be a “land man,” a glorified paralegal who researched the ownership of the mineral rights beneath certain plots of land, and hooked them up with those who wanted to drill. He then founded Arbusto Energy (the name means “bush” or “shrub”

All Americans, and people of compassion everywhere, remain deeply troubled by the cruel war in Bosnia and the broader turmoil in what was Yugoslavia. We took several important initiatives in August, and today I am announcing further steps to help ease this conflict.

The United States has been working intensively with other concerned nations to contain the conflict, alleviate the human misery it is causing, and exact a heavy price for aggression. This international effort has produced some results. The recent London conference set up an international mechanism for addressing all aspects of the Yugoslav problem and put in motion an active negotiation. The tenuous truce in Croatia is holding. International observers are on their way to neighboring countries and other parts of the former Yugoslavia to prevent the violence from spreading.


Now, a new enemy is about to enter the battlefield: winter. Some weeks ago, I asked for an assessment of the effects that the combination of war and winter could inflict on the suffering people of Bosnia. The answer was profoundly disturbing: thousands of innocent people, some uprooted, others trapped, could perish from cold, hunger, and disease. Anticipating this danger, the United States has been working with other nations and with the United Nations to mount a major expansion of the international relief effort and to support the tireless negotiations of U.N. and EC envoys, Cyrus Vance and David Owen, to get the fighting stopped.

I want the American people to know what the United States intends to do to help prevent this dreadful forecast from becoming a tragic reality. I have decided to take a number of further steps:


Fourth, we will offer to the United Nations and the Red Cross help in transporting and caring for those who are being freed from detention camps. We have already provided $6 million for this purpose.

CRAWFORD, Texas — Ten days after President Bush arrived at his ranch for a monthlong holiday, and about nine days after critics began grousing about the length of his stay, the president is interrupting his vacation to do some roadwork.

He is expected to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado today for a bit of brush-chopping and trail-clearing to highlight a YMCA program. Then it's on to some fund-raising in the political underbrush (he's bringing in bucks for one of Colorado's incumbent Republican senators and its Republican governor) and a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves.

On Wednesday, there is more fund-raising planned in New Mexico, plus a visit to an elementary school there and a speech on small business before Bush returns to Crawford.

But his departure from the 1,600-acre Prairie Chapel Ranch here serves largely to underscore the sensitivity Bush and his staff have shown to any suggestion that the president is goofing off.

Call the time in Texas a trip home, not a vacation. That's the message from Bush and his aides.

"Get used to it, because this is where I'm coming back to," the president said adamantly to reporters Monday. "Some people say, 'Well, this is a vacation spot.' Actually, this is our house and home.

CRAWFORD, Tex., Dec. 30 -- On most of the 365 days he has enjoyed at his secluded ranch here, President Bush's idea of paradise is to hop in his white Ford pickup truck in jeans and work boots, drive to a stand of cedars, and whack the trees to the ground.

If the soil is moist enough, he will light a match and burn the wood. If it is parched, as it is across Texas now, the wood will sit in piles scattered over the 1,600-acre spread until it is safe for a ranch hand to torch -- or until the president can come home and do the honors himself.

Sometimes this activity is the only official news to come out of what aides call the Western White House. For five straight days since Monday, when Bush retreated to the ranch for his Christmas sojourn, a spokesman has announced that the president, in between intelligence briefings, calls to advisers and bicycling, has spent much of his day clearing brush.

This might strike many Washingtonians as a curious pastime. It does burn a lot of calories. But brush clearing is dusty, it is exhausting (the president goes at it in 100 degree-plus heat), and it is earsplitting, requiring earplugs to dull the chain saw's buzz.

For Bush, who is known to spend early-morning hours hacking at unwanted mesquite, cocklebur weeds, hanging limbs and underbrush only to go back for more after lunch, it borders on obsession.

By now the stories of over-indulgence are yesterday's news. When the longest and strongest bull market in the history of the United States peaked in the late 1990s, the number of newly minted millionaires and billionaires seemed unending—as did their excesses. Gulfstreams replaced Hummers as the ride of choice, $20,000 dinners became cocktail party fodder, and the concept of a second home was upgraded to include third, fourth, and fifth locations.

But in 1999 when Governor George W. Bush gave architect David Heymann a list of design priorities for the new ranch house that he and his wife sought to build, the Texan's top three requests were anything but extravagant: a king-sized bed, a good shower, and some comfortable chairs on the porch.

The ranch retreat is a presidential tradition that dates back long before Camp David. Ronald Reagan's Rancho del Cielo and LBJ's Pedernales spread are only the most recent incarnations of a Western connection to the White House that began with Teddy Roosevelt. It was 1883 when a 24-year-old TR first set foot in Little Missouri, a soon-to-be-forgotten cowtown in the Dakota Territory. Intent on overcoming his physical frailties, Roosevelt spent two weeks in the region on his first foray. By the time he left, he had bagged not only a bison but also a stake in the Maltese Cross Ranch.

It was the first of two cattle operations the Knickerbocker would buy into, and the years he spent ranching, hunting, and scouting the "Bad Lands" would serve him well up San Juan Hill and into the White House. In Roosevelt's words, "The farther one gets into the wilderness, the greater is the attraction of its lonely freedom."

A century later, one of Roosevelt's successors finds similar solace in the Lone Star State among the live oaks and limestone canyons of McLennan County. The Bushes' now-traditional August hiatus on their ranch outside Crawford is as much an attempt at normalcy as it is a working vacation with visits by foreign dignitaries and heads of state, regular gatherings with White House staffers and Cabinet members, and some good, old-fashioned politicking.

"I want to stay in touch with real Americans," said the President to a crowd of Crawford residents shortly after the 2001 inaugural ceremonies. As the locals knew, the President and the First Lady had already put those plans in motion several years earlier by purchasing a spread in the heart of "real America" during his second term as governor of Texas. Executive Summary

On July 19, 1989, at 1516, a DC-10-10, N1819U, operated by United Airlines as flight 232, experienced a catastrophic failure of the No. 2 tail-mounted engine during cruise flight. The separation, fragmentation and forceful discharge of stage 1 fan rotor assembly parts from the No. 2 engine led to the loss of the three hydraulic systems that powered the airplane's flight controls. The flight crew experienced severe difficulties controlling the airplane, which subsequently crashed during an attempted landing at Sioux Gateway Airport, Iowa. There were 285 passengers and 11 crewmembers onboard. One flight attendant and 110 passengers were fatally injured.

INSIDE THE BARRIER. John has built himself a small fire and is sitting by it, licking the inside of the wrapper of his last energy bar. He scrunches it up and then looks down at his right hand, flexing his fingers painfully, so it's either very cold in the cave or he is weak from hunger. He tosses the wrapper down onto the floor. At that moment, the cave shakes as if a small earthquake is going off. He ducks, covering his head as small rocks fall from the ceiling. The earthquake subsides. As John looks around cautiously, there's a sound from the doorway and the energy field starts to glow blue. John stands up and runs over to the doorway as a knapsack flies through. John bends down to the knapsack, then stares at the doorway.

SHEPPARD: What the hell took you guys so long?!

(He unties the drawstrings of the knapsack, pulls out a canteen of water and takes a long drink.)

The crowded courtroom fell silent. * A white-haired judge, straight out of central casting, peered down thoughtfully from his lofty perch. The man before him was short and stood very erect, no expression on that famous pockmarked face. He wore a khaki uniform with four stars on each shoulder and spoke Spanish in urgent, even tones. * "When I was brought to the United States, I mistakenly believed that I would be able to receive a fair trial," Manuel Noriega began. "In order for this to come true, I also believed that I would be able to use my money to hire the lawyers of my choice. It is painfully obvious that the United States government does not wish me to be able to defend myself and (has) done everything possible to deprive me of a fair trial and due process."* Noriega paused for the interpreter to catch up. Then he started again: "They have taken my money, deprived me of my lawyers, videotaped me in my cell, wiretapped my telephone calls with my lawyers and even given them to the press." * The deposed dictator of Panama accused the U.S. government of waging a one-sided courtroom war, the equivalent of its December, 1989, invasion of his country. PANAMA CITY — Gunshots and tear gas fired by local authorities and maybe others drove President Bush from a stage in a downtown plaza here Thursday when he was just moments away from delivering a speech in praise of the revival of democracy in Panama.

Secret Service agents carrying automatic weapons led a chaotic evacuation from the plaza, whisking the President and his wife, Barbara, to a nearby American air base for safety.

Waiting for his speech, a joyous, flag-waving throng of about 3,000 Panamanians abruptly panicked at the sound of gunfire and dull explosions apparently caused by the launching of tear gas at protesters demonstrating on the fringes of the crowd.

The throng's enthusiasm turned to pandemonium as a stinging, choking mist of tear gas wafted across the plaza.

As the crowd surged forward, Secret Service agents surrounded Bush, draped him in a bulletproof coat and hustled him and the First Lady rearward away from the stage, amid a stampede of guests and invited dignitaries. Everyone's eyes streamed from the effects of the tear gas.

A second wave of heavily armed Secret Service agents pressed forward to meet the crowd, pointing their weapons and directing the crowd away from the President and his party. Others, brandishing submachine guns and pistols and some wearing gas masks, crouched near Bush's limousine as the Plaza Porras was transformed into something resembling a war zone.

With weapons-toting agents perched on the running boards, Bush and a small party sped away to the air base that was the site of his next scheduled Panama City stop. Unhurt and only a little flustered, Bush described the incident as the result of a "tiny left-wing demonstration."

The White House said it did not believe Bush was ever in immediate danger.

Ronald Reagan may have been the first president to be asked in an interview about his sex life.

The fact that I survived to write about it -- that I wasn't tossed off Air Force One by Secret Service agents -- tells a lot about Reagan. How he handled my awkward question spoke reams about his sense of humor, self-confidence, character and class.

It's the kind of story that might be told at a eulogy. But since I won't be a eulogizer, I'll recount the tale here.

President Reagan had counseled young people at a Houston drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in 1983 to take care of their bodies so they could enjoy sex late into life. At least, that's the way it sounded to bemused reporters, startled aides and the recovering addicts, who responded to the grinning president with laughter.

This is what the 72-year-old Reagan actually said:

"When you get along to where I am, you find out taking care of that machinery sure pays off when ... you can still tie your shoes and pull on your own socks without sitting down and do a lot of things that are much more enjoyable than that."

There was a big smile on his face.

Later, I asked longtime Reagan advisor Michael Deaver, whom I'd known since we were fraternity brothers at San Jose State, whether the president had been referring to sex. Deaver said he thought so, but it was a question only the president could answer.

He arranged an interview for me as Reagan flew from Washington to Santa Barbara for a Fourth of July holiday. Our topic was to be aging. Reagan would be running for reelection the next year, and many voters were concerned about the physical stamina and mental agility of America's oldest president, particularly after he had narrowly survived an assassination attempt.

Sitting across a table from the president in his private cabin, I decided to make my first question about the drug clinic comments. Reagan explained that he had actually been thinking about activities such as cutting tree limbs, riding horses and swimming. Sex "wasn't in my mind," he said, chuckling, but he instantly realized the audience had interpreted his remarks that way.

I plowed ahead: "Well, I'm on shaky ground here, OK?"

"Fine," Reagan replied.

"But I've got to ask a 72-year-old president ... "

"Yeah?"

" ... if you still have an active sex life?"

Reagan's eyes opened wide, he grinned broadly and laughed. Deaver sat up straight.

"I don't think, no, George -- and I'm remembering things like Mr. Carter in Playhouse [sic]." -- Reagan was referring to candidate Jimmy Carter's 1976 confession in Playboy that he had "lusted" in his heart. -- "No, this is a subject I think I'll stay away from."

Reagan spoke candidly about how he loved his ranch but would be "bored" if he weren't president. He talked about his sparing use of alcohol and shunning of tobacco, the slow loss of hearing in his right ear, the gradual curling of a finger because of a rare hereditary malady -- and the attempt on his life, the inevitability of death and his deep religious faith.

I didn't write a word about sex, feeling he really hadn't said much. But others later did, because snickering White House aides leaked excerpts to reporters.

The point here is that Reagan was a rare politician -- rare person -- who could make a reporter feel comfortable fishing in treacherous waters. He took it in stride and seemed to enjoy the banter. He was invariably at ease with himself and everyone else.

Later, I received a White House photo of me querying the beaming president. He wrote on it: "Then I said -- !?"

Reporters did not intimidate Reagan. As governor, he held weekly news conferences in the Capitol, a practice long since abandoned by successors who have opted for staged photo-ops. Reagan prospered politically from news conferences because his sincerity and conviction got through to the public.

Each summer, he'd invite Capitol reporters and their families -- kids and all -- to his house for a swimming party and barbecue. My three daughters still cherish a snapshot of them standing waist-high to Reagan as he nonchalantly held a half-hidden beer can. How many pols today would dare be photographed with a beer can?

When he was president and I was covering him, Reagan called my mother on her 85th birthday. "Haven't you got better things to do?" she asked with typical Skelton tact. Of course he did, but Reagan loved to call and surprise people. He complimented her for years of volunteer work at the Ojai Valley museum.

"The essence to understanding Ronald Reagan is that he genuinely likes people," said press aide Mark Weinberg, who set up the call. "He took great pleasure in brightening their day.

"There was nothing insincere about him. He may have been an actor, but he wasn't a fake."

And that was the essence of Reagan's popularity. Even people who disagreed with him knew he was genuine.

My fellow Americans,

I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.

In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing. They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.

So now we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clear understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.

At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

Unfortunately, as Alzheimer's disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.

In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

Michael Deaver still feels the wrench of emotion when he rereads the concluding pages of his book, the words describing the last time he would ever see his old boss, Ronald Reagan. It was in the winter of 1998, after Alzheimer's disease had done its terrible work. Nancy Reagan had made the decision that the former president would no longer be seen in public, that only the immediate family would have access to the Great Communicator in his waning days.

She wanted the world to remember the president who'd cleared brush on his ranch, who'd stood erect as he challenged the Evil Empire, not the one who no longer recognized the people who once made up the tapestry of his life.

The thought have occurred to me several times over the course of a long time that I might actually be the actual owner of this building. The thought occurred to me that I constructed it and named it Vermont for that specific reason. When I first moved out here in 1998, I first lived in that corporate apartment Microsoft arranged for me. Then when I had to find a place of my own I lived in that long-term hotel across from the Bellevue city police. I can't remember how long I lived there but I guess it was no longer than 3 or 4 months but I guess it could have been as long as 7 months but I don't think it was that long but I really cannot recall. But after I moved out of there I moved to another location in Bellevue named the Pacific Inn Apartments which is the same company as this Vermont Inn Apartments and I lived there for quite a while before I moved a few block down to the Oakwood Apartments

What would be the title of a 5 star U.S. Marine Corps officer?

I would like to see such a rank but I find it difficult to imagine any rank of a 5 star general officer of the USMC because the USMC is a sub organization of the U.S. Navy and a 5 star officer would be a U.S. Navy Fleet Admiral officer.

But maybe that just means it is something I did not create.

A Fleet General?

That doesn't sound right.

A General of the Marine Corps?

I think that is similar to another service but yet that doesn't sound right either.

I don't know.

We went to Vermont for a basic wedding arrangment and her mother went with us as a witness. Phoebe and I spent a week together, in upstate New York I guess, in a secluded cabin by a lake for our honeymoon.

In the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, I can "remember" Tracie Rhodes wanting me to ask her father, Joseph, for permission to marry her. Tracie's birthday, in the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, was July 16th. We met when she started working at the First Federal bank in Greenville, although she worked at the branches in Clemson, South Carolina, which is home to the Clemson Tigers. After my memory was suppressed from conscious awareness and I was struggling to regain conscious awareness of my true memory, of who I am and where I am, I imagine that most people who know me, such as my father and my wife, were happy just that I remembered to wear pants or sufficient clothing went I walked outside my apartment. I am honored to announce today that the 40th ship of the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers will be named in honor of the late Senator John H. Chafee of Rhode Island. Senator Chafee distinguished himself throughout a life dedicated to serving our Nation as a United States Senator, as Secretary of the Navy, as Governor of Rhode Island, and as a United States Marine in World War II and the Korean war. Given Senator Chafee's long association with the sea—with the Marine Corps, the Navy, and the great maritime State of Rhode Island—I can think of no better way to honor his many contributions than to name a warship in his honor.

The ship named in honor of Senator Chafee will be one of the most technologically advanced ships in the United States Navy. McCarthy Army hearings begin

Senator Joseph McCarthy begins hearings investigating the United States Army, which he charges with being "soft" on communism. These televised hearings gave the American public their first view of McCarthy in action, and his recklessness, indignant bluster, and bullying tactics quickly resulted in his fall from prominence.

In February 1950, Senator McCarthy charged that there were over 200 "known communists" in the Department of State. Thus began his dizzying rise to fame as the most famous and feared communist hunter in the United States. McCarthy adeptly manipulated the media, told ever more outrageous stories concerning the communist conspiracy in the United States, and smeared any opponents as "communist sympathizers" to keep his own name in the headlines for years. By 1954, however, his power was beginning to wane. While he had been useful to the Republican Party during the years of the Democratic administration of President Harry S. Truman, his continued attacks on "communists in government" after Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower took over the White House in 1953 were becoming political liabilities.

In an effort to reinvigorate his declining popularity, McCarthy made a dramatic accusation that was a crucial mistake: in early 1954, he charged that the United States Army was "soft" on communism. McCarthy was indignant because David Schine, one of his former investigators, had been drafted and the Army, much to McCarthy's surprise, refused the special treatment he demanded for his former aide. In April 1954, McCarthy, chairman of the Government Operations Committee in the Senate, opened televised hearings into his charges against the Army.

The hearings were a fiasco for McCarthy. He constantly interrupted with irrelevant questions and asides; yelled "point of order" whenever testimony was not to his liking; and verbally attacked witnesses, attorneys for the Army, and his fellow senators. The climax came when McCarthy slandered an associate of the Army's chief counsel, Joseph Welch. Welch fixed McCarthy with a steady glare and declared evenly, "Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness...Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" A stunned McCarthy listened as the packed audience exploded into cheers and applause. McCarthy's days as a political power were effectively over. A few weeks later, the Army hearings dribbled to a close with little fanfare and no charges were upheld against the Army by the committee. In December 1954, the Senate voted to censure McCarthy for his conduct. Three years later, having become a hopeless alcoholic, he died.

Navy Rises To Occasion In Duel At Sea

WASHINGTON — For the first time in more than 40 years, enemy warships have seriously challenged the U.S. Navy at sea. The Navy won-decisively.

When the sun set on the Persian Gulf Monday night, at least two Iranian patrol boats were at the bottom, two others were heavily damaged, perhaps even sunk, and two Iranian frigates were disabled.

In one day`s combat, Iranian fleet strength was reduced considerably. The U.S. ships involved in the fighting were unscathed.

By all accounts, the Navy racked up a victory, marred only by the probable loss of an Army attack helicopter. The Cobra helicopter, operating with a two-member crew from the cruiser Wainwright, was reported overdue.

The engagement underscores the decisive impact of air power in naval engagements and the effectiveness of simple countermeasures in dealing with antiship missile attacks.

But the incident that prompted Monday`s naval battle-the near sinking last week of the USS Samuel B. Roberts by an Iranian mine-raises anew the question of the Navy`s ability to deal effectively with even simple mines.

The Navy`s success in surface combat stems in large measure from the presence of aircraft overhead. E-2C Hawkeye radar planes from the carrier Enterprise provided early warning of Iranian F-4 Phantom jets as well as inbound surface vessels.

Attack aircraft known as A-6 also provided early warning of impending attacks. And it was the bombs and missiles fired from the A-6s that inflicted most of the damage. Only two of the Iranian vessels damaged or sunk were hit by ordnance fired from surface warships.

At the same time, the Iranian air force-with barely two dozen or so planes still operational, for want of American spare parts-was able to mount only a token sortie of two F-4s, which were chased off and possibly damaged by U.S. antiaircraft missiles.

Control of the sea would seem to require dominance of the air.

Indeed, the British Royal Navy`s losses in the Falkland Islands war might have been far worse if the Argentine A-4s had not been forced to fly to the very limit of their range, with only enough fuel for one pass, and if more of their bombs had exploded on impact.

However, the Persian Gulf action shows that some of the Navy`s surface ship countermeasures do work. The captain of the frigate USS Stark was roundly criticized for not employing chaff as a radar decoy before his ship was hit by a radar-homing Exocet missile last May.

On Monday, the cruiser Wainwright used its chaff to decoy a Harpoon missile fired from the attacking Joshan, an Iranian fast attack craft.

The Joshan, which did not employ any effective chaff, was then hit and sunk

THE PRESIDENT [reading]. I have made some notes from which I want to talk to you about this U-2 incident.

A full statement about this matter has been made by the State Department, and there have been several statesmanlike remarks by leaders of both parties.

For my part, I supplement what the Secretary of State has had to say, with the following four main points. After that I shall have nothing further to say--for the simple reason I can think of nothing to add that might be useful at this time.

The first point is this: the need for intelligence-gathering activities.

No one wants another Pearl Harbor. This means that we must have knowledge of military forces and preparations around the world, especially those capable of massive surprise attacks.

Secrecy in the Soviet Union makes this essential. In most of the world no large-scale attack could be prepared in secret, but in the Soviet Union there is a fetish of secrecy and concealment. This is a major cause of international tension and uneasiness today. Our deterrent must never be placed in jeopardy. The safety of the whole free world demands this.

As the Secretary of State pointed out in his recent statement, ever since the beginning of my administration I have issued directives to gather, in every feasible way, the information required to protect the United States and the free world against surprise attack and to enable them to make effective preparations for defense.

My second point: the nature of intelligence-gathering activities.

These have a special and secret character. They are, so to speak, "below the surface" activities.

They are secret because they must circumvent measures designed by other countries to protect secrecy of military preparations.

They are divorced from the regular visible agencies of government which stay clear of operational involvement in specific detailed activities.

These elements operate under broad directives to seek and gather intelligence short of the use of force--with operations supervised by responsible officials within this area of secret activities.

We do not use our Army, Navy, or Air Force for this purpose, first, to avoid any possibility of the use of force in connection with these activities, and second, because our military forces, for obvious reasons, cannot be given latitude under broad directives but must be kept under strict control in every detail.

These activities have their own rules and methods of concealment which seek to mislead and obscure--just as in the Soviet allegations there are many discrepancies. For example, there is some reason to believe that the plane in question was not shot down at high altitude. The normal agencies of our Government are unaware of these specific activities or of the special efforts to conceal them.

Third point: how should we view all of this activity?

It is a distasteful but vital necessity.

We prefer and work for a different kind of world--and a different way of obtaining the information essential to confidence and effective deterrents. Open societies, in the day of present weapons, are the only answer.

This was the reason for my "open skies" proposal in 1955, which I was ready instantly to put into effect--to permit aerial observation over the United States and the Soviet Union which would assure that no surprise attack was being prepared against anyone. I shall bring up the "open skies" proposal again at Paris--since it is a means of ending concealment and suspicion.

My final point is that we must not be distracted from the real issues of the day by what is an incident or a symptom of the world situation today.

This incident has been given great propaganda exploitation. The emphasis given to a flight of an unarmed nonmilitary plane can only reflect a fetish of secrecy.

The real issues are the ones we will be working on at the summit-disarmament, search for solutions affecting Germany and Berlin, and the whole range of East-West relations, including the reduction of secrecy and suspicion.

Frankly, I am hopeful that we may make progress on these great issues. This is what we mean when we speak of "working for peace."

And as I remind you, I will have nothing further to say about this matter. [Ends reading]

You won't see this flag at half-staff from the street. You have to walk a clean concrete alley to see it, the flag of the United States in mourning, in a gray sky, on a flagpole behind a South Side tavern.

Inside Bobby G's, on Archer Avenue in Chicago, was Bob Granat, 29, carpenter and tavern keeper, tattoos running up both arms, alone in the dark afternoon of his bar, the horrible news on TV.

On the screen, the burning chunks of the space shuttle Columbia streaked over the sky of Texas, and must have held some bits of ash, residue, something left of the seven dead astronauts.

I didn't want a beer, but I had to ask him about the flag out back.

"Yeah, sure, you can't see it from the street," he said Saturday. "I just lowered it. No one can see it but me, out the back window there, but who sees it, that isn't the point. Is it?

"My dad called. I knew what I had to do, lowered it right then. I'm not trying to make a big thing. It was for them, for respect.

"They're astronauts."

It was the way he said "they're astronauts," with the awe of the earthbound, that answered everything, a respect given to a different type of human being, a higher form, the best of us.

On the Web page of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, you'll find this:

It's not only a motto. It is absolutely necessary.

So we'll mourn the seven, pray for their souls and for their families and colleagues, as the echoes of their grief continue through future days.

And then other explorers will take that crew's place and send themselves up there again.

That was the determination of NASA officials, first to mourn their dead, then find the cause of the explosion, fix it, and get back into space.

"Space flight is a passion," one of them said, and I could hear the grit in his voice over the car radio, even as they collected the smoldering pieces in Texas.

The V-22 Osprey was the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of all four U.S. Armed services. In partnership with Bell Helicopter Textron, Boeing Helicopters built the revolutionary new tiltrotor aircraft that takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter.

Once airborne, its blades can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight. Boeing was assigned responsibility for the fuselage, all subsystems, digital avionics and fly-by-wire flight-control systems.

The 30-ton aircraft can transport assault troops and cargo, undertake combat search and rescue and fleet logistic support, and provide long-range transportation for special operations.

By 1997, requirements called for production of 523 Ospreys, with the first to enter service during 1999. The first V-22 built to production standards made its first flight in February 1997 and was delivered March 15, 1997, to the V-22 Integrated Test Team at the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center in Maryland. Eleven were produced by the end of 2000.

After the crash of a V-22 on Dec. 11, 2000, the aircraft did not return to flight until May 29, 2002. Five were flying by the end of 2002. The first passenger to fly aboard a V-22 after it returned to flight was Lt. Gen. Michael W. Hagee, incoming commandant of the Marine Corps, who in January 2003 flew in the cockpit of MV-22 Osprey aircraft No. 21 at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. The flight lasted about 15 minutes.

London calling.





Well, it is not as profound as the Lifesavers incident I observed and reported on a while back but I still feel this observation has enough merit to report.

After I made my last blog post, before this one, I rushed out and walked over to the grocery store before darkness set in too much.

I was plodding along towards the orange juice aisle and I was thinking through in my mind again about my affinity for the word 'superluminal.' The word is about the characteristic of light so it makes sense that the word and my affection for that word invokes in my mind something where I can see something about light. I just cannot figure what it means other than what I can read about. As I was walking back and I was composing in my mind most of the content I personally contribute to this observation, I was thinking about a dream I had a while back and that I can still visualize to some degree. I saw two or three moons in the night sky and those moons were the planet orbiting type but those were of course not the moons of our planet Earth. There was also a very luminescent quality to those moons as they traveled along low on the horizon and I cannot recall ever seeing our planet Earth's moon look that same way. That image I can still vaguely see in my mind is one of the details I thought over as I walked back from the grocery store.

The relevant detail about this post is that I went up to the self-checkout stand and I rang up $43.59 which makes me think of 4 March 1959. I was thinking of the song as I walked back because of the 4 March detail. I am not expecting a phone call from anyone and I was thinking today I wish I could build a portal that dumps some more cash into my apartment.

I always thought those song lyrics goes "nuclear arrow" instead of "nuclear error."

So anyway, I thought about the random possibilities of me generating that value at the checkout stand. I also thought about how likely would be the occurences of me generating $33.59 again. So I thought through a lot of that as I walked back. I feel I wanted to write more but after I wrote the last sentence my mind went almost kind of blank for a moment and I suddenly lost my train of thought, which wasn't very organized to begin with on this topic.

Ghosts of Earth





Now I recall one of the notions I was thinking of as I was walking back from the grocery store, other than details I considered about the random nature of me generating a $43.59 food bill just after I made that tremendous report about the 2002 film "The Time Machine."

I was thinking again about a line of thought I have had before about the spirit world trying to make contact with this real world. I find the notion credible that spirits would make reference to art that is recognizable to the the mass of people in their target audience. I have some kind of mental capability to resist them though that the masses do not seem to have or even to want.

'I saw the heads of two orange-clad people coming through the bushes and under some blossom-covered apple-trees towards me. I turned smiling to them and beckoned them to me. They came, and then, pointing to the bronze pedestal, I tried to intimate my wish to open it. But at my first gesture towards this they behaved very oddly. I don't know how to convey their expression to you. Suppose you were to use a grossly improper gesture to a delicate-minded woman—it is how she would look. They went off as if they had received the last possible insult. I tried a sweet-looking little chap in white next, with exactly the same result. Somehow, his manner made me feel ashamed of myself. But, as you know, I wanted the Time Machine, and I tried him once more. As he turned off, like the others, my temper got the better of me. In three strides I was after him, had him by the loose part of his robe round the neck, and began dragging him towards the sphinx. Then I saw the horror and repugnance of his face, and all of a sudden I let him go.

'But I was not beaten yet. I banged with my fist at the bronze panels. I thought I heard something stir inside—to be explicit, I thought I heard a sound like a chuckle—but I must have been mistaken. Then I got a big pebble from the river, and came and hammered till I had flattened a coil in the decorations, and the verdigris came off in powdery flakes. The delicate little people must have heard me hammering in gusty outbreaks a mile away on either hand, but nothing came of it. I saw a crowd of them upon the slopes, looking furtively at me. At last, hot and tired, I sat down to watch the place. But I was too restless to watch long; I am too Occidental for a long vigil. I could work at a problem for years, but to wait inactive for twenty-four hours—that is another matter.

'I got up after a time, and began walking aimlessly through the bushes towards the hill again. "Patience," said I to myself. "If you want your machine again you must leave that sphinx alone. If they mean to take your machine away, it's little good your wrecking their bronze panels, and if they don't, you will get it back as soon as you can ask for it. To sit among all those unknown things before a puzzle like that is hopeless. That way lies monomania. Face this world. Learn its ways, watch it, be careful of too hasty guesses at its meaning. In the end you will find clues to it all." Then suddenly the humour of the situation came into my mind: the thought of the years I had spent in study and toil to get into the future age, and now my passion of anxiety to get out of it. I had made myself the most complicated and the most hopeless trap that ever a man devised. Although it was at my own expense, I could not help myself. I laughed aloud.
