Appears again because of what this news item from today caused me to think.

by me, Kerry Burgess, 02/18/2006

Anyway, I don't know why I need to record this in my journal, I think it is just a habit I picked up in my youth. When I don't feel my life is secure enough to actually go out and try to win over one of these young beauties, I can only sit here and express my desires in private. With no privacy though, it is highly humilating to think that I can't even express my desires in private. It is like a vicious cycle. I cannot go out and find someone to bring into my life because my life is stolen by anonymous tormentors and I can't even express my desires in private, as something of a consolation, because my privacy is stolen too by the anonymous tormentors. I feel envious of Taylor in The Planet of The Apes; the monkeys threw him in a cage, but at least they were considerate enough to through in Nova with him. I wish I had a Nova in my cage, but I wouldn't wish this lunacy on anyone

The last girl I was trying to win over was either from Vietnam or Thailand, I'm not sure which, I think she had family in each and/or had lived in both. And there have been others that I knew that were descended from other countries. I knew with a high-degree of certainly someone was interfering with my attempts to get to know her, and I could tell that people at Microsoft were involved somehow.

Radio Address to the Nation on Armed Forces Day

May 17, 1986

My fellow Americans:

We're broadcasting live today from Fort Myer, a military installation just outside Washington. And before me at this moment, looking tall and impressive, are members of the honor guard of the five branches of the military service: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. These proud units appear at special ceremonies and are always on hand to help me greet foreign heads of state at the White House. And believe me, the leaders of other nations have often commented on the snap, the polish, and the soldierly bearing of these troops. In fact, I sometimes think a few of our visitors are a little envious of ``The Gipper,'' as our uniformed sons and daughters pass by in review. Well, okay, in my case, our uniformed grandsons and granddaughters. [Laughter]

But today we're all on hand at Fort Myer to celebrate a very special date in America's official calendar: Armed Forces Day. Today we set aside a few moments to pay tribute to the millions of Americans serving their nation in the cause of freedom all over the globe. Many of them are listening to me now, and as Commander in Chief I want to remind each of you in uniform how grateful your country is to you. Let me assure you that the millions of Americans going about their usual Saturday schedule and listening now join me in saying to you, ``Thanks -- thanks for being there, for keeping our homes and children safe, for keeping America free and at peace.''

Now, I know you here with me and most members of the armed services listening at the moment aren't in your dress uniforms, and maybe -- and I'm sure it only happens every now and then -- your shoeshines aren't quite as bright as the ones I'm looking at here. But I know the sense of military professionalism, love of country, and commitment to freedom is just as strong. It's because of that patriotism and professionalism that you've left your homes and communities to become part of an extraordinary military tradition. Unlike so many other traditions, America's military history has been largely one not just of great battlefield victories but victories in the name of something beyond conquest or self-interest.

USS Abraham Lincoln arrives in Thailand after extended Iran deployment

About 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines are stopping in the resort city of Pattaya for a “rest and relaxation” break as they return home from a record-setting deployment in the Middle East.

Sept. 1, 2026, 9:24 PM PDT / Updated Sept. 2, 2026, 12:59 AM PDT

By Mithil Aggarwal, Courtney Kube, Mosheh Gains and Nat Sumon

LAEM CHABANG, Thailand — The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived Wednesday at a port in eastern Thailand, where thousands of U.S. sailors and Marines are disembarking for the first time in more than 280 days after a record-setting deployment in the Middle East.

The toll of the more than nine-month deployment, most of it spent supporting military operations in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, was visible on the carrier as it pulled into Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province. Paint has worn off and the metal underneath is rusted on the 1,092-foot warship, which is one of the largest in the world.

The Lincoln is in Thailand for a four-day “rest and relaxation” stop on its way home to San Diego after having spent weeks in the headlines as the lengthy deployment raised concerns about supply shortages and the effect on sailors’ mental health.

The U.S. Navy confirmed the ship’s arrival in a statement, saying the Lincoln strike group arrived in Laem Chabang while the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked in nearby Sriracha and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls went to Map Ta Phut in neighboring Rayong province.

The Navy said it was the Lincoln’s first full port stop after 286 days at sea since the deployment began in November.

“Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our sailors and Marines to rest and recharge,” said Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3. “It also underscores the strong and enduring partnership and alliance between the United States and Thailand.”

About 5,000 sailors and Marines are expected to hit the streets of Pattaya, a nearby coastal resort city that is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. Each service member will get three “liberty days” and one day of duty aboard the ship, a U.S. military official said.

Upon the Lincoln’s arrival in the morning, service members could be seen working aboard the deck as loudspeakers played announcements about the process for disembarkation. A whistle could be heard ringing across the deck, a Navy tradition that signals coming ashore.

Around 1 p.m. local time (2 a.m. ET), service members began disembarking from the ship in civilian clothes, some carrying backpacks. One service member was carrying his golf clubs. Waiting for them across the way were dozens of Ford pickup trucks and buses lined up in columns to take them into town.

“Please be on your best behavior,” a commanding officer could be heard saying over loudspeaker.

Various people have been doing stuff out there in the real world with the effect of capturing my attention.

One person in particular has an Instagram page. I do not check it daily. So I have no idea when the change to her content - relative to this observation today by me - actually occurred. Must have been in recent days, unknown to me the precise day. So I cannot check for what it causes me to think.

Because of my past work, I make a note about it that only people following my extensive blog-posts here on my blog might recognize the reference.

O'NEILL
Linea is dead, right?

CARTER
Well, if those two bodies that Ke'ra found really were the Vyun elders that Linea was experimenting on…

O'NEILL
Don't say it Carter.

CARTER
Sir, we wouldn't recognise her even if she walked in the front door.

O'NEILL
Don't, don't…

[He puts his hands to his ears and starts singing.]

CARTER
(loudly)
Sir, she has the knowledge of chemistry, the medical skills…

[She pulls his hands away from his ears.]

CARTER
I think we at least have to face the possibility that Ke'ra is Linea.

INT—BRIEFING ROOM, SGC

[Hammond
Then she's also a victim of the amnesia?]

O'NEILL
It fits.

DANIEL
It fits…well what about the body of the old woman they found after the Vorlix that fits Linea's description?

TEAL'C
Linea's first victim.

O'NEILL
Come on Daniel, you saw the test results. What more do you need?

FRAISER
Ke'ra's DNA is a perfect match for the samples I took from Linea last year. It's irrefutable.

DANIEL
Irrefutable? Ok, so let's just, uh, lock her up, throw away the key then. Or better yet, we could send her back to the prison where we found her.

O'NEILL
Linea, Daniel. She used to be Linea. We're lucky she didn't knock us off the first time around.

DANIEL
Let me ask you a question: Who would you trust with your life more than anyone else in the world? Don't worry, I won't be offended if you don't pick me. Could it be Teal'c?

O'NEILL
Sure.

DANIEL
Uh, Teal'c, just refresh my memory. What was your previous occupation?

TEAL'C
I was the First Prime of Apophis.

DANIEL
Right. Did a few nasty things back then?

O'NEILL
We see the subtle point you're trying to make.

DANIEL
No you don't. She is not the same person. She is not who she used to be. Let's not condemn her for who she may have been in the past.

HAMMOND
I think it would be prudent to keep her confined to her quarters until we can resolve the Vyuns' medical crisis. Colonel O'NEILL, perhaps you could inform her…?

DANIEL
(cutting him off)
I'll inform her.

[He walks out of the room.]

INT—KE'RA'S QUARTERS, SGC

[Ke'ra is brushing her hair, when she sees Daniel enter.]

KE'RA
(pleased)
Daniel.

[She touches him, but he doesn't reciprocate.]

KE'RA
What's wrong?

[She sees guards standing at her door.]

KE'RA
(cont'd)
We have work to do.

DANIEL
Nothing, there are…quarantine procedures that General Hammond is insisting on. He's uh…you have to stay here awhile.

KE'RA
But the effects of the Vorlix are not contagious.

DANIEL
I know.

KE'RA
Then why?

DANIEL
I can't tell you everything, but I can tell you that more happened during the Vorlix than just losing your memories.

KE'RA
Is that why there are now guards outside my door?

DANIEL
No, that's just standard procedure.

KE'RA
If you say so.

That was a perfect example.

I was frocked to rating and rank as Fire Controlman Petty Officer Third Class before my arrival to the training curriculum.

First was Basic Electricity and Electronics School in Orlando from February 1986 to April 1986. One of the very first days there, because I was already a Petty Officer, I was charged with marching the other attendees over to an auditorium for a speech by the CO, the same guy that was there in 1984. He made a point of leaving the stage and as he continued speaking, walked down the aisle and stood at the end of the aisle where I was sitting and he stood there a few moments staring directly at me. When I got back to the barracks, the Petty Officer in the office told me to get a haircut and that I should know better. Later, the Petty Office in charge of my learning group was glaring at me momentarily after he came back from leave and I would guess that was because I had again forgotten to get a haircut. Not that I was deliberately avoiding it.

By May 1986, I was in Great Lakes in North Chicago and we had regular uniform inspections. I remember the resigned sound a Petty Officer First Class - a student changing rate to FC - made as we stood next to each other in line and when I got the best grade of all and that was better than his, for the inspection. My haircut was so tight that my girlfriend had complained to me about one time, because of something I said about her.

And yet, my performance review is only a 3.6 (on a scale up to 4.0) while I attended school at Great Lakes.

At my graduation from basic training in 1984, I pointed out my pride in my uniform and of how the shine on my boots was always the best. Thedia made a disparaging comment about it and that demonstrated her life as a peasant. My pride in my polished boots was the only part she could understand, her being a peasant. She could not understand or grasp how that translated into my pride in all my work, work at anything better that she never had any ambition for.

I have been puzzling for a while about a "memory" from being in school at Great Lakes. The instructor was talking about the names of the Great Lakes proper and he told us that the names form the acronym H.O.M.E.S. After he explained that the acronym represented the names of the lakes, Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, he said "Now you'll never forget the names of the Great Lakes" or he said words to that effect. What puzzles me is why I even "remember" learning such a useful tip in the context of that class.

Trump signs order renaming Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ in the United States

By MICHELLE L. PRICE and WILL WEISSERT

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday he is renaming Lake Ontario to be known as “Lake America” in the United States as he escalates his trade war with Canada.

The Republican president signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service. Trump cannot force Canada to follow along, however.

A. Introduction

This Referral presents substantial and credible information that President Clinton criminally obstructed the judicial process, first in a sexual harassment lawsuit in which he was the defendant and then in a grand jury investigation. The opening section of the Narrative provides an overview of the object of the President's cover-up, the sexual relationship between the President and Ms. Lewinsky. Subsequent sections recount the evolution of the relationship chronologically, including the sexual contacts, the President's efforts to get Ms. Lewinsky a job, Ms. Lewinsky's subpoena in Jones v. Clinton, the role of Vernon Jordan, the President's discussions with Ms. Lewinsky about her affidavit and deposition, the President's deposition testimony in Jones, the President's attempts to coach a potential witness in the harassment case, the President's false and misleading statements to aides and to the American public after the Lewinsky story became public, and, finally, the President's testimony before a federal grand jury.

Over a two-hour span the next morning, Monday, January 19, 1998, Ms. Currie made eight unsuccessful attempts to contact Ms. Lewinsky, by either pager or telephone.(1087) After speaking with the President to let him know that she was unable to reach Ms. Lewinsky, Ms. Currie again paged her.(1091) The purpose of these calls, according to Ms. Currie, was to tell Ms. Lewinsky that her name had been mentioned in the President's deposition.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

32nd President of the United States: 1933 ‐ 1945

Inaugural Address

March 04, 1933

President Hoover, Mr. Chief Justice, My Friends:

This is a day of national consecration. And, I am certain that on this day my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

From Wikipedia

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military attack by the Empire of Japan on the US Pacific Fleet at its naval base at Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. At the time, the US was a neutral country in World War II. The air raid on Pearl Harbor, which was launched from aircraft carriers, prompted the US to declare war on Japan the next day.

Aftermath

Main articles: Consequences of the attack on Pearl Harbor and Day of Infamy speech

The day after the attack, US president Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous Day of Infamy speech to a Joint Session of Congress, calling for a formal declaration of war on the Empire of Japan. Congress obliged his request less than an hour later. On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, even though the Tripartite Pact did not require it. Congress issued a declaration of war against Germany and Italy later that same day.

The United Kingdom had already been at war with Germany since September 1939 and with Italy since June 1940, and British prime minister Winston Churchill had promised to declare war "within the hour" of a Japanese attack on the United States. Upon learning of the Japanese attacks on Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong, Churchill promptly determined there was no need to either wait or further consult the US government and immediately summoned the Japanese ambassador. As a result, the United Kingdom declared war on Japan nine hours before the United States did.

The attack was a shock to all the Allies in the Pacific Theater. Further losses compounded the alarming setback.

The Japanese confidence in their ability to win a quick victory meant that they neglected Pearl Harbor's navy repair yards, oil tank farms, submarine base, and old headquarters building. All of these targets were omitted from Genda's list, yet they proved more important than any battleship to the American war effort in the Pacific. The survival of the repair shops and fuel depots allowed Pearl Harbor to maintain logistical support of the Navy

World War II

From Wikipedia

World War II, or the Second World War (1 September 1939 – 2 September 1945), was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies and the Axis powers. Nearly all of the world's countries participated, with many engaging in total war on an unprecedented scale. World War II was the deadliest conflict in history, causing the deaths of 60 to 75 million people, a majority of whom were civilians.

The American Presidency Project

Franklin D. Roosevelt

32nd President of the United States: 1933 ‐ 1945

Address to Congress Requesting a Declaration of War with Japan

December 08, 1941

Mr. Vice President, and Mr. Speaker, and Members of the Senate and House of Representatives:

Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that Nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American Island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

Former spy reveals top secrets of one of ‘most dangerous jobs'

By Jake Meeus-Jones

A former MI6 intelligence officer has revealed how he was recruited by his university professor and had 14 alias identities.

Matthew Dunn, 57, joined the secret intelligence service in 1996 and spent many years working across the world in "one of the most dangerous jobs."

For a while, he wasn't able to tell his family what he did and would often be operating abroad under another identity.

During his career with MI6, Matthew operated alone in hostile locations around the world, targeting some of the highest-ranking figures in rogue states.

His work earned him a rare personal commendation from the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for an operation that significantly enhanced the security of Great Britain and its allies.

He is now set to embark on a new stage show transforming audiences into members of an MI6 command center as they navigate a high-stakes intelligence operation inspired by the realities of modern espionage.

Matthew, who lives in Stratford-upon-Avon, said: "At peak I had 14 alias identities.

"It means you need to be that person - or as much that person as possible to withstand a degree of scrutiny.

"For example at entry and exit of ports - where one can naturally be questioned.

"What that actually means is not just to cover the job of the person you are, but also your backstory - which university, which street you live on, the name of the pub, what beers are on draft etc.

"So if somebody starts probing, you can talk for a period of time.

"In operations - it's not like you see in the movies, your aliases overlap, not just one at a time.

"I might be juggling and moving between operations and identities.

"I think deep down, the ability to do it, is within the individual.

"MI6 are recruiting spies before they are spies."

Matthew was recruited by a talent spotter while studying politics and economics at the University of East Anglia.

He said: "MI6 approached you, not the other way round.

"That was done by talent spotters across Britain - a good hunting ground was universities.

"I was in the back end of my under-graduate studies working with a professor.

"He asked me what I envisaged doing after graduation and as a youngster I was very interested in books and I encountered spy fiction.

"So when I was at university, I remember reading the likes of le Carré and others and knew this is where they recruit.

"So when he asked me what I was looking to do, I thought this was the time to consider some kind of entry into MI6.

"My response was I was thinking about government service and specifically foreign service - I did wonder if this person in front of me was a talent spotter.

"Nothing happened overnight but now again the conversation would pop up again.

"Later on, he finally said there was some people in London he'd like me to meet and I said 'of course.'

"I met the aforementioned people and their opening question was 'do you know who you're talking to?' and I said 'Yes, you're MI6'.

"Afterwards I went through rigorous testing and interviews.

"If at any point I didn't pass, that was it."

While Matthew naturally cannot discuss details of operations - protected under the Official Secrets Act - he revealed that he rarely felt fear, even when he "should have."

He added: "The nature of espionage by nature is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world - it always carries that threat.

"That was a given - it's illegal in most countries around the world, including ours, yet here we are all playing the game.

"My personal experience of operating was that I was always aware of that threat, but on occasion it was thrust in my face and I can't go into anymore detail on that.

"I cannot remember a time where I had fear, abject fear - I was in positions where I should've done, but I didn't.

"I think the reason for that is our focus was always about the challenges."

He also wasn't initially allowed to tell family members about his line of work.

Matthew said: "In the vetting process what they ask you to do is give them a list of people you've known in past and present - family, employers, anyone.

"They take that list and they start networking around it to build as big a picture as possible of who you are.

"I do remember having to tell my parents that I was a diplomat until I was given them authority to say otherwise.

"I bumped into my mother one day and I had to improvise.

"She quite naturally would say let's meet for lunch near Whitehall and I had to bluff the whole thing!"

Since leaving the intelligence service, he has become a bestselling author and security expert and will begin a run of 70 dates for his upcoming stage show.

He said: "The driver behind this was that we want to take the audience into a situation they've never seen before - into the heart of the MI6 control room where a live operation is being monitored.

"Audiences, whether theater or movies, have this sense of the way of life of MI6 but we knew to a large extent that is a heavily fictionalised version.

"We want to make it rooted in reality and what's going on now - to show how it would actually be conducted.

"We thought it would be great on a stage - right up close and personal, to make the audience part of the experience."
