Ethernet is a family of wired computer networking standards designed for (but not limited to) local area networks (LAN), access networks, and metropolitan area networks (MAN). It was commercially introduced in 1980 and first standardized in 1983 as ECMA-82 and shortly after as IEEE 802.3. It is an example of an open standard.
History
The original forms of Ethernet used a shared communications channel. This concept originated in ALOHAnet, designed in the late 1960s by Norman Abramson. ALOHAnet was a 4800 bit/s radio network used by the University of Hawaii. When a sender detected that its message hadn't been received, it would resend the message after waiting for a randomly selected period of time.
In 1972, Robert Metcalfe and David Boggs adapted the ALOHAnet approach to transmission over a shared coaxial cable in the Xerox PARC (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center). Metcalfe was tasked with building a high-speed local network to connect the Xerox Alto prototype PCs to Xerox's prototype high-resolution laser printers and the Internet (then known as ARPANET). Metcalfe and Boggs' network connected Alto computers using a coaxial cable. In a 12-page memo written on May 22, 1973, Metcalfe named the concept "The Ether Network." The name was inspired by the former idea that the universe was filled with a "luminiferous aether" that carried electromagnetic waves, and calling it Ethernet emphasized its ability to run over any transmission medium. It first ran on November 11, 1973 with a bit rate of 2.94 Mbit/s.

A helmsman or helm (sometimes driver or steersman) is a person who steers a ship, sailboat, submarine, other type of maritime vessel, airship, or spacecraft. The rank and seniority of the helmsman may vary: on small vessels such as fishing vessels and yachts, the functions of the helmsman are combined with that of the skipper; on larger vessels, there is a separate officer of the watch who is responsible for the safe navigation of the ship and gives orders to the helmsman, who physically steers the ship in accordance with those orders.
In the merchant navy, the person at the helm is usually an able seaman, particularly during ship arrivals, departures, and while maneuvering in restricted waters or other conditions requiring precise steering. An ordinary seaman is commonly restricted to steering in open waters. Moreover, military ships may have a seaman or quartermaster at the helm.

A group of Israeli anthropologists and doctors, led by Dr. Nicu Haas of the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, announced the discovery of "the first authenticated physical evidence of a crucifixion in Biblical times." The skeleton was of a man whose name, according to the inscription in Aramaic on his ossuary, was Jehohanan Ben-Hagkol, had apparently been between the age of 24 and 28, had been unearthed in June 1968 during the development of a government housing project in the Givat HaMivtar section of northeastern Jerusalem; of 35 individuals whose tombs were found underneath the grounds of the housing site, pathologists concluded that 30 had died from natural causes, two by fire, one from an arrow wound, one from a skull fracture, and one by crucifixion. Professor Yigal Yadin explained that the conclusion of crucifixion was supported by the discovery of a corroded iron nail in the heel bones of the victim, which the persons who buried Jehohanan had been unable to remove before burial because the nail had been bent after striking a knot in the wood of the cross.
