Military Fitness Experts Bash Hegseth’s Workout Videos — One Says NONE of His Push-Ups or Pull-Ups Were Done Right
Sarah Rumpf
Mon, July 20, 2026 at 8:45 PM PDT 6 min read
Military fitness experts criticize Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's workout videos for poor form and technique, with one expert stating that none of his push-ups or pull-ups were done correctly.
It sounds plausible to say that America has seen Pete Hegseth in a T-shirt and shorts more than any prior Secretary of Defense, but his technique in those workout videos he loves posting would get a flunking grade, according to several military fitness experts interviewed by The Atlantic.
The Secretary of Defense has made physical fitness and appearance a core part of his focus since making the transition from a Fox & Friends Weekend host to leading the world's powerful military. He's scolded older officers for getting "fat," barred troops with facial hair from events, and posted numerous videos of himself working out with members of the military.
One recent video Hegseth posted showed him and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promoting what they called "The Pete and Bobby Challenge," which consists of trying to do at least 50 pull-ups and 100 push-ups in under ten minutes.
Video clips of Hegseth and Kennedy went viral, with many commentators mocking Kennedy's habit of working out in jeans and dissing the whole thing as cringy and awkward.
Hegseth's form is so bad, multiple military fitness experts said he "fails on form" the service's tests based on his videos, according to a report by The Atlantic's Tom Bartlett headlined "Pete Hegseth, You Call That a Pull-Up?"
Bartlett noted that Hegseth and the agency he oversees are the ones recording, editing, posting, and heavily promoting these videos (which he mockingly refers to as "Boot Camp Pete" episodes), and he's the one who declared strict and harsh judgment was the way to go on military fitness issues.
With each one of these videos, Bartlett wrote, "critics skewer his form and mock his endurance," dissing him as "all flex and no fundamentals."
In the video below declaring he "CRUSHED 44 reps" doing bench presses, Bartlett pointed out that Hegseth "doesn't fully extend his arms, making the exercise far easier and inflating his total."
"A few seconds into the clip, you can hear someone yell, 'All the way down, all the way up!'" Bartlett continued. "Hegseth fails to heed that helpful cue."
Bartlett researched the "hundreds of pages" in military exercise training manuals, including numerous "charts, bullet points, and illustrations" and described how these are "directives rather than suggestions" when it comes to the various branches' fitness tests.
If you fail to meet the declared standards, it "results in a 'no-go,' in military parlance, meaning you haven't passed that portion of the test," wrote Bartlett, and "Hegseth's push-ups wouldn't pass muster in any branch."
Hegseth's trouble, the reporter explained, is that he sometimes displays "more or less textbook" form but struggles with "consistency" and can be seen not fully executing the required movements and ends up "flouting the rules and sacrificing form for speed":
Hegseth's push-ups are more like half-ups: In the ones captured on video, he doesn't go through the full range of motion. His substandard technique is ironic because he's on record ridiculing others for their lack of push-up prowess. In his 2024 book, The War on Warriors, Hegseth mocks women soldiers who can do only "ten push-ups at a pop" and refers to a transgender woman as a "ten-push-up kind of guy."
To be fair, Hegseth's pull-up form, at times, is more or less textbook. The issue is consistency: Hegseth can't seem to maintain the standard for the duration of the competition, and raises his knees to his chest to give himself additional oomph. This is known as "kipping" and is forbidden in an eight-page pull-up guide published by the Marines. In one clip, Hegseth kips while using an underhand grip, which technically makes what he's doing a chin-up—an exercise often considered less challenging than a pull-up. (The Marine guide permits both, though kipping is always forbidden.) According to the guide: "Poor quality work will prevent you from getting the most from your workout and can lead to injury." Hegseth's work is, by Marine standards, poor.
Former Navy SEAL Stew Smith has written a series of books about how to qualify for the Special Forces, and told The Atlantic he wouldn't comment specifically on Hegseth's videos because he "doesn't evaluate the performance of people unless they ask, and so wouldn't comment specifically on Hegseth's approach and abilities," wrote Bartlett. "But he said he stresses to his students the importance of going all the way up and all the way down, whether it's a pull-up, push-up, or bench press."
Retired Brigadier General Maureen LeBoeuf was "the first and only woman to head the physical-education department at West Point, a position known as 'master of the sword,'" and was willing to give The Atlantic a frank assessment of Hegseth's technique.
LeBoeuf would have failed him.
"She said that nothing she saw from the defense secretary in that video would have counted if she had been the grader, and she has graded thousands of such tests," wrote Bartlett, and she honed in on how he was "kicking" his legs:
"His pull-ups or chin-ups and the kicking that he does—you would never allow that. You'd stop somebody; you'd say, 'Okay, you're done,' " LeBoeuf said. "He just keeps kicking, and it's not a good look." She allowed that he might have been exhausted in those clips, but the Army doesn't usually recognize fatigue as an excuse. And it's hard to forgive such lapses and corner-cutting from someone who, as LeBoeuf put it, is "real big on standards."
Joel Valdez, the acting Pentagon press secretary, defended his boss when reached for comment by accusing The Atlantic of holding Hegseth to an unfairly high standard and taking some swipes at his predecessor during the Biden Administration.
"Have you ever seen Lloyd Austin's form? Did the Atlantic ever ask about it?" Valdez wrote. "The answer to both of those questions is no."
Austin, however, "was not known for posting self-promotional exercise content on social media," Bartlett concluded with a snarky note. "He did, however, complete Ranger School and Airborne School, command the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan, lead the fight against the Islamic State, and earn a Silver Star."

I have thought again several times about that memory of getting my red Ford stuck in the mud. It was on that underground pipeline near where I shot that 9-point. I can almost picture my pickup sitting there up to the fenders in the mud. That is the time I had to walk out of the woods to find someone to pull me out. It was pitch black that night and I only knew I was on the road by the sound of the gravel crunching under my boots. I had to walk several miles like that.

F-14 CREW EJECTS DURING CARRIER LAUNCH
DailyPress.com
Dec 18, 1990
The two-man crew of an F-14 Tomcat from a Oceana Naval Air Station squadron was forced to eject Monday night on takeoff from the Florida-based carrier USS Forrestal, Navy officials said.
The pilot and radar intercept officer, both assigned to Fighter Squadron 31 at Oceana, received minor injuries after parachuting down to the carrier, Navy officials said.
The men decided to eject when it looked like the jet was not going to be able to get up enough speed for takeoff and was headed instead over the side of the carrier, the Navy said.
The jet came to rest near the edge of the flight deck. Although the incident was under investigation, Navy officials said the jet apparently had become separated from the catapult during launch, the Navy said.
After ejecting, the pilot landed on the flight deck, suffering bruises and scrapes and possibly a sprained ankle, officials said.
The radar intercept officer was rescued from his parachute that snagged on the ship's superstructure, or island, above the flight deck. He received minor scrapes, Navy officials said.
Both men, whose names were not available late Tuesday, were treated by medical personnel aboard the carrier.
The Forrestal, based in Mayport, was conducting night training operations off the coast of Florida.
from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: Sunday, July 01, 2007
Ah.... a cookbook. If that was me that was stuck in the aircraft carrier's superstructure after ejecting from a failed launch of my F-14 Tomcat, I created an artificial and symbolic memory of me sitting underneath the ships radar while reading a book. I almost got cooked by that radar so I symbolized that with me sitting under it reading a book to create a reference to a cookbook. I have other vague memories, artificial or real, I'm not certain, that support this notion.

My DD-214 doesn’t reflect that because, first of all, it is about Kerry Burgess, but also because it only reflects the period ending 5/14/90. I may have still flown as a fighter and bomber pilot after 1987, but I don’t think that was ever my primary role again after returning. I am not sure what to think about the thoughts I have had about flying the Apache gunship. Maybe that is something else I did occasionally.

Sample text for At dawn we slept : the untold story of Pearl Harbor
Tokyo took increasing interest in American military activities and buildup, as evidenced by a message dispatched to Washington on February 15, paragraphs one and two of which especially applied to Honolulu:
The information we particularly desire with regard to intelligence involving U.S. and Canada are sic the following:
1. Strengthening or supplementing of military preparations on the Pacific Coast and the Hawaii area; amount and type of stores and supplies; alterations to air ports (also carefully note the clipper traffic).
2. Ship and plane movements (particularly of the large bombers and sea planes).
Okuda required no prompting. By this time his reports had become regular and detailed, and Seki’s scouting had improved considerably. But the United States was quite security-conscious by now. On February 10 Knox pleaded for protection of military secrets. And he begged American citizens “not to disclose the movements of fleet personnel.” He could have saved his breath. The very day Short arrived in Hawaii—February 5, 1941—the new department commander had to take a back seat to a large headline splashed across the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: MAIN BODY OF FLEET TO SEA. What reasonable spy could ask for more? Evidently that thought occurred to Bloch, for on March 4 he protested to the Star-Bulletin about a similar story because “such information as published by your paper, if true, would furnish any real or potential enemy a valuable basis on which to predicate their operations.”9
Seki did not rely solely on newspaper accounts. With typical Japanese thoroughness he kept on checking with his own eyes. On the twenty-seventh Okuda could tell his superiors, “Apparently the Fleet goes to sea for a week of training and stays in Pearl Harbor one week. Every Wednesday, those at sea and those in the harbor change places. This movement was noted on last Wednesday, the 26th._._._.”10
Here began what would persist throughout the year—report after report accurately identifying the schedules and routines of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Schedules and routines! How beguiling they are, so easy to follow! What a comforting sense they give of security and predictability! For this reason, over many generations the men aware of the value of such intelligence have handed down a mighty commandment: Thou Shalt Not Establish a Habit Pattern. But by early December 1941 the American commanders had neglected this cardinal rule. The Japanese planners had to know where to put their finger on target ships; reliable U.S. patterns plus excellent reporting from the consulate enabled them to do just that.
Honolulu’s new Japanese consul general, Nagao Kita, disembarked from Tatuta Maru on March 14; after being duly wined and dined, he paid courtesy calls on local dignitaries, including Short. Kita’s broad face, thick hair, bushy brows, and flat pug nose above a short, chubby body gave him the look of a prizefighter. He dressed well, played an enthusiastic, if average, game of golf, and was something of a social lion. His years on the Asian mainland had given him the Chinese gentleman’s gift of infinite leisure. He was flexible and adjusted to the needs and circumstances of the moment, always calm, detached, and alert. A widower whose only son attended school in Japan, he could devote his abundant energies exclusively to his job in Honolulu.11
To assist him, his superiors sent him a young man whose name appeared as “Tadashi Morimura” on the passenger list of the liner Nitta Maru as she nosed into Pier 8 in Honolulu Harbor on March 27, 1941. Actually he was Takeo Yoshikawa, a trained intelligence agent. When Okuda draped a welcoming lei around Yoshikawa’s neck and shepherded his charge through customs, the Japanese Navy had slipped ashore its top secret spy as unobtrusively as any tourist.

I mean, we're only one step away from beating each other with clubs like savages fighting over scraps of meat. Maybe the Cylons are God's retribution for our many sins. What if God decided he made a mistake? And he decided to give souls to another creature, like the Cylons?
Adama: God didn't create the Cylons. Man did. And I'm pretty sure we didn't include a soul in the programming.

I have absolutely no problems with USA DOD and SECDEF.
I do have objections when that buffoon Pete Hegseth sent war-plans to a journalist.
Not only to a journalist but to Hegseth's third-wife.
Still a fairly young man and he's at his third (and counting?) wife and he's sending her over the wireless crucial secrets
So there's guy doesn't seem capable of giving his women what they want.
Because his personal hairspray and phony bravado is not cutting it.
Someone out there wants me to review this stuff.
I don't know who, I don't know why, I don't know anything.
I don't know why it continues and how I got here.
May 10, 2006.
I would say this is predictable, my interpretation.
It pivots on the term "rut" so how predictable is that?
Sure, becomes obvious *after it is explained by *me.
At this point, *you still don't know what it means.
That buffoon should be pumping them up on cardiovascular exercise. That is what is most important.
This is certainly a predictable point to check. Predictable to that Hairspray Fog Woke guy? Certainly not predictable to him.
Only reason (probably) he joined the part-time military was because he enjoyed so much that volleyball scene from 1986 "Top Gun"

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday the Pentagon will require service members over the age of 30 to be screened for testosterone deficiency annually. If they are recommended for treatment, they may choose to receive testosterone replacement therapy.
"I'm authorizing a new screening program for testosterone deficiency for our service members, ensuring you have the right testosterone levels to operate at your absolute best," Hegseth announced in a video on X titled "High-T Department."

House Democrat: Hegseth testosterone screenings indicative of ‘homoeroticism’
Ryan Mancini
Thu, July 16, 2026 at 10:53 AM PDT 2 min read
Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) on Thursday said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's testosterone screening requirement for U.S. service members is indicative of "homoeroticism."
Hegseth announced this week that the Pentagon will give the screenings to service members 30 years and older, regardless of gender. Should treatment be recommended following the test, they will have the choice to receive testosterone replacement therapy.
"I think it's indicative of the fact that there are so many people in this administration that have some weird, like, intense homoerotic feelings towards men while also being incredibly homophobic," Balint told reporter Scott MacFarlane with MeidasTouch. "And not just homophobic, but like hate-mongering, fear-mongering about the LGBTQ community."
Balint, who is openly gay, said that she does not find the homoeroticism to be "the weird part."
"The weird part is that they pretend that that's not what it's about," the lawmaker continued. "And so, Pete Hegseth is like the example of this manly, manly, rugged, macho man."
The New England Democrat added that the Defense chief is the "embodiment" of the style of hypermasculine, homoerotic art drawn by Finnish artist Touko Valio Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland.
"So I feel like they must be looking at that [Tom of Finland's art] as like their example for what men look like," Balint said.
The Defense Department posted a video online of Hegseth making the announcement, saying that the "most decisive tactical advantage will always be the individual warfighter." The secretary noted that he authorized the new screening program to ensure troops can operate at their best.
"We have a sacred duty to maintain that advantage, which is why we must constantly look for new ways to optimize your performance, your resilience and your long-term health," he said.
He also assured that the screenings are not "about artificial enhancement," emphasizing the program will keep troops on the "leading edge of lethality."
The Trump administration has long focused on traditional masculinity. Hegseth has also imposed strict fitness and grooming standards in the U.S. military. In September, he said he did not want to see overweight troops or "fat generals and admirals" during a speech before several hundred high-ranking officials in Quantico, Va.
Hegseth, a former National Guard member, has also emphasized physical fitness on social media and has been seen working out with service members, including during a recent trip to the U.S. base at Guantánamo Bay.
President Trump himself has long used stamina and physical ability as a measure of a political opponent's strength. He would frequently question former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris over their cognitive and physical health while on the campaign trail in 2016, 2020 and 2024, respectively.

Pro-Kremlin blogger who turned on Putin is arrested as Russia steps up crackdown
The news of Ilya Remeslo’s arrest came just as a court hearing was being held for another critic, Boris Nadezhdin, in a sign of an intensified response to mounting internal dissent.
July 17, 2026, 3:05 AM PDT / Updated July 17, 2026, 3:55 AM PDT
By Yuliya Talmazan
A former loyalist blogger turned fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin has been detained and accused of spreading false information about the armed forces, state media reported Friday.
The news came just as a court hearing was being held for another Kremlin critic and opposition politician, Boris Nadezhdin, in a sign of an intensified response to mounting internal dissent over the war in Ukraine and its impact on Russian life.
The blogger, Ilya Remeslo, stunned many in Russia when he published a scathing manifesto against the Russian leader that went viral in March.
He was detained in St. Petersburg early Friday and could face up to 10 years in prison, state news agency Tass reported, citing law enforcement sources.
The charge he faces is a common one for opponents of the war in Ukraine and has been used to jail numerous dissidents since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in 2022.
Remeslo will be brought to Moscow for a hearing to determine a pretrial restriction, his lawyer, Sergey Badashmin, told Tass. It was not clear if Remeslo is disputing the charge.
After years of pro-Kremlin activism, Remeslo published a long post on Telegram, titled “Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin.”
Remeslo, who was previously known as a vocal critic of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny and even testified against him in court, accused Putin of being “a war criminal and thief” among a litany of criticisms.
The day after his essay, Remeslo, 42, ended up in a psychiatric hospital in unclear circumstances.
He emerged from his hospitalization after several weeks and continued criticizing the Russian leader on his social media with the same zeal. He gave an extended interview following the episode, saying hospitalization was “the price” of his words about Putin.
Russia Anti-War Candidate Banned
Just as news of Remeslo’s detention spread Friday, a court hearing was held in the Moscow region for opposition politician and ex-presidential hopeful Boris Nadezhdin.
He was barred from challenging Putin in 2024 and was declared a foreign agent last week, a designation that the Kremlin often uses to discredit its opponents.
Nadezhdin, 63, was accused of displaying “extremist symbols” stemming from a 2023 post on his Telegram channel, with a link to a YouTube stream where a photo of Navalny was displayed.
Russian authorities have designated Navalny and his Anti-Corruption Foundation as extremist and banned. Nadezhdin denies the charge.
In what proved a more lenient ruling than some feared, the court fined Nadezhdin 1,000 rubles ($12) and set him free.
The foreign agent designation prevents Nadezhdin from running in parliamentary elections this September, which are being closely watched for signs of public discontent.
In his speech in court Friday, Nadezhdin said the purpose of his trial was to “shut me up and not let me run in parliamentary elections.”
When Nadezhdin tried to run against Putin in 2024, long lines of supporters waited to back his candidacy with their signatures. This riled up the Kremlin, which works to create a perception of total support for Putin among the voting public.
Before his trial, Nadezhdin said he did not rule out leaving the country for the sake of his family, something that many opponents of the Kremlin have been forced to do. But he then announced that he received an official notification that he is prohibited from leaving Russia, something that he was planning to appeal.

Here's a strange occurrence as it relates to my own personal activities.
Thought of it just as they played the scene during the late-afternoon on CBS Evening News antenna broadcast television.
Reminded me instantly of notes I discovered while researching for an unrelated topic.
I know it happened today because I remember the reason I dismissed it.
Went back and tried to rediscover the original detail that caused me to rediscover it in my massive notes.
Cannot find it now and that is very rare for me
This is what I did observe and I know it was not what I saw earlier
Now they got that ridiculous crybaby up there on my tv-screen so I am ignoring his douchebag whining.
What a freaking crybaby, that guy. Loser.
His ridiculous Hairspray-Fog Woke Secretary of Defense has now ordered chemical tests for selection of his Bromance buddies.
This happened today of their own volition.
I am in contact directly or indirectly with none.

Navy's elite Blue Angels won't be reprimanded after video shows low flyover at Florida beach
By Tom Hanson, Sarah Lynch Baldwin
Updated on: July 16, 2026 / 5:13 PM EDT / CBS News
The acting secretary of the U.S. Navy said the Blue Angels who conducted a low flyover at a beach in Florida won't be reprimanded or fired after a flight debrief was completed.
"No reprimands. No firings. No problem. That's the sound of Freedom!" Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao wrote on X.
Video shows people watching from Pensacola Beach, Florida, as jets soared above the Gulf — before one jet flew low over a crowd and banked sideways. It barreled so low that it sent sand, chairs and tents flying.
The Navy's elite Blue Angels had said they were reviewing the circumstances surrounding the low flyover and conducting a safety review of the pass, which was lower than standard.
"During an arrival maneuver, an aircraft flew lower than standard profiles, resulting in a disturbance on the beach that affected civilian chairs and umbrellas," the Blue Angels, formally known as the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, said.
"The safety of our hometown community, spectators, and our pilots is our highest priority," it said. "Team leadership is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the maneuver and conducting a thorough safety review to ensure all operations adhere to strict Navy and FAA safety standards."
A Defense official appeared to comment on the incident Thursday. Sean Parnell, assistant to the defense secretary, said, "CARRY ON PATRIOTS," as he posted a picture on social media of what appeared to be the flyover.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth tweeted Thursday morning, in an apparent reference to the Blue Angels incident, "The flyovers will continue until morale improves."
Earlier this month, four Apache helicopters conducted a controversial maneuver when they flew low over crowds gathered along the South Carolina coast on the Fourth of July. The pilots were suspended, which the South Carolina Army National Guard said was a "routine, non-punitive safety measure" and "not a disciplinary action." Days later, the Pentagon said the suspensions were lifted.
In March, two AH-64 Army helicopters made a flyby of the Nashville home of singer Kid Rock during a training mission. The Army initially suspended the pilots pending investigation. The next day, Hegseth said the pilots' suspension had been lifted and that there would be no investigation or punishment.
