In the early hours of 31 August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died from injuries sustained in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, France.
Events preceding the crash
On Saturday, 30 August 1997, Diana travelled from Olbia Airport, Sardinia, on a private jet and arrived at Le Bourget Airport in Paris with Egyptian film producer Dodi Fayed, son of businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed. They had stopped there en route to London, having spent the preceding nine days together on board his father's yacht Jonikal on the French and Italian Riviera. They had intended to stay there for the night. His father was the owner of the Hôtel Ritz Paris and resided in an apartment on Rue Arsène Houssaye, a short distance from the hotel; just off the Avenue des Champs Elysées.
Henri Paul (3 July 1956 – 31 August 1997), deputy head of security at the Ritz, had been instructed to drive the hired black 1994 armoured Mercedes-Benz S 280 saloon registered 688LTV75 (W140 S-Class) in order to elude the paparazzi; a decoy vehicle left the Ritz first from the main entrance on Place Vendôme, attracting a throng of photographers. Diana and Fayed then departed from the hotel's rear entrance, Rue Cambon, at around 00:20 on 31 August CEST (22:20 on 30 August UTC), heading for the apartment in Rue Arsène Houssaye. They did this to avoid the nearly 30 photographers waiting in front of the hotel. Diana and Fayed were the rear passengers; Trevor Rees-Jones, a member of the Fayed family's personal protection team, was in the front passenger seat. None of the vehicle's occupants were wearing seat belts. After leaving the Rue Cambon and crossing the Place de la Concorde, they drove along Cours la Reine and Cours Albert 1er – the embankment road along the right bank of the River Seine – into the Place de l'Alma underpass.
The crash
At 00:23 CEST (22:23 UTC), Paul lost control of the car at the entrance to the Pont de l'Alma underpass. The car reportedly struck a white Fiat Uno, swerved to the left of the two-lane carriageway and collided head-on with the 13th column that supported the roof. The Mercedes driven by Paul was travelling at an estimated speed of 105 km/h (65 mph) – more than twice the 50 km/h (31 mph) speed limit of the tunnel. The vehicle then spun, hit the stone wall of the tunnel backwards and finally came to a stop. The impact caused substantial damage, particularly to the front half of the vehicle, as there was no guard rail to mitigate collisions. Witnesses arriving shortly after the crash reported smoke. They also reported that photographers on motorcycles "swarmed the Mercedes sedan before it entered the tunnel".

This key detail occurs during a time that would have been after Thedia's husband #2, active-duty US Marine Corps, and before Thedia's husband number #3. Thedia's husband #5 arrived when I was 14 years old and she was still married to him when I left Arkansas in 1984. Whatever it was Thedia did to ruin it with her husband #2 got us back from a brief departure of De Queen where I grew up and that same lousy, infested trailer-house. He had been a fairly decent guy. He was certainly a better father than her first husband, listed as my father on my birth-certificate. One time, after the turmoil started with her husband #2 and they got back together again, I commented to them that she should just marry Evel Knievel. The year 1976 is probably when she married husband #3 and I remember them fairly well, his family. His last name was adopted from his step-father's last name. His mother was some sort of nurse at the local hospital. He was early-20s, younger than Thedia, and some sort of menial worker, janitor or bed-pan scrubber or something, where his mother worked and they probably were not doing so well financially and we lived for a while at his parent's house. Also, I recently discovered evidence his step-father was a Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer First Class with the US Navy during World War II. All I remember about him is yelling at me to stay out of the neighbors yard and of that day I walked outside their house to discover him performing CPR on Thedia's husband #2. The dim-wit had electrocuted himself with a power drill installing a boat-trailer hitch on Thedia's car, preparing for some sort of family reunion at the lake. I enjoyed swimming by myself in the murky waters of Lake Greeson.
Back in that year of this key detail, for some baffling reason, Thedia dropped off Melissa and me at the grand opening of the new Bailey's hardware store

Camp Couchdale was a few months earlier, in the summer of 1981.
An unsuccessful candidate for Thedia's husband number five took me deer-hunting in what I guess was November 1979. Could have been 1978 but I don't think so. Deer camp was a lot of fun. He let me borrow a 30-30 rifle and I fired it once at a white-tail deer and missed. Tradition was they cut off part of the back of my shirt for missing. They didn't use dogs and so I remember walking through the woods in sort of a skirmish line - I think at least one of them was a military veteran - and also riding in his truck. He kept telling me that me riding in the back of his truck with my rifle was illegal but I continued to insist until he let me do just that.
There was other stuff that probably caused him to opt out and escape her designs for her husband number 5. She too lazy to find a real job.
Another candidate was a rodeo-clown with a fractured skull. He and she went out on the town one night in distant Texarkana and they dropped me off at the theatre to watch the new "Empire Strikes Back" movie. Don't recall ever seeing that clown again after that night.
And then in the summer of 1980, she brought home to that crappy bug and rodent infested rental house in DeQueen, Arkansas, her successful candidate for husband number 5: Denzil.
I was furious.
The 1980 school-year began in September. That was 9th grade for me. So I would have started 10th grade in year 1981.
