John Cockcroft

Ernest T.S. Walton

Sir John Douglas Cockcroft

Born: 27 May 1897, Todmorden, United Kingdom

Died: 18 September 1967, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Affiliation at the time of the award: Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Berkshire, United Kingdom

Prize motivation: "for their pioneer work on the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles."

Life

John Cockcroft was born into an English family active in the cotton industry. He studied mathematics and electrotechnical engineering in Manchester, with a break for military service during World War I. After working for a couple of years in electrotechnology, he came to Cambridge in 1924. Among other things, he started the Cavendish Laboratory there. During World War II he worked on developing radar. After the war he worked primarily within the UK Atomic Energy Authority. John Cockcroft married in 1925 and had four daughters and a son.

Work

Ernest Rutherford used alpha particles from radioactive elements to study nuclear reactions and used his findings to convert nitrogen into oxygen. However, only a very few nuclear reactions could be achieved using alpha particles. John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton developed a device, an accelerator, to generate more penetrating radiation. Using a strong electric field, protons were accelerated to high velocities. In 1932, they bombarded lithium with protons, causing their nuclei to split and producing two alpha particles.

March 23, 1994

The President. Mayor?

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Mr. President.

The President. How are you doing, Mayor?

Mayor Riley. Well, I'm doing fine. How are you?

The President. I'm great. Nice to hear your voice.

Mayor Riley. Well, it's great to hear yours. And we're pulling for you, and just keep fighting and working hard. We're in your corner. And thanks for all the tremendous cooperation we've been getting from the administration with our reconversion efforts. It's been terrific.

The President. Well, thank you. As you know, I'm calling you with some good news today. The Secretary of Labor, Bob Reich, is awarding $15 million in defense diversification program funds to the Charleston County Employment and Training Administration.

Mayor Riley. Well, that's wonderful.

The President. We hope it will help to retrain about 1,920 people who are being laid off from your naval complex there.

Zefram COCHRANE: Ma'am. You're food to a starving man. All of you. Hey, that's a nice ship. Simple and clean. Been trying to get her to go again? Well, forget it. It won't work.

Doctor MCCOY: He's human, Jim. Everything checks out perfectly.

Captain KIRK: Mister Cochrane. We were forced off our course and taken here by some force we couldn't identify.

SPOCK: Which seems to be on the surface of this body at the moment.

COCHRANE: Well, I wouldn't know anything about that.

SPOCK: You say we'll be unable to get the ship to function again?

COCHRANE: Not a chance. There's some sort of dampening [ damping ] field down here. Power systems don't work. Take my word for it.

SPOCK: You don't mind if we continue to try?

COCHRANE: Go right ahead. You've got plenty of time.

KIRK: What about you, Cochrane? How did you get here?

COCHRANE: Marooned, I told you. Look, we'll have lots of time to learn about each other.

KIRK: If you don't mind, Mister Cochrane, I'd like more than just a statement that you were marooned here. It's a long way off the beaten path.

COCHRANE: That's right. That's why I'm so glad to see you. Look, I'll tell you everything you want to know, but not here. Your ship is sure a beauty.

KIRK: Yes, she is. And you've been out of circulation quite a while. The principles may be new to you. Mister Spock, why don't you explain our methods of propulsion to Mister Cochrane?

(Spock and Cochrane go to the other side of the shuttlecraft.)

MCCOY: Talks a lot, but he doesn't say much.

KIRK: I've noticed something else.

MCCOY: What's that?

KIRK: He looks familiar.

MCCOY: Familiar? Now that you mention it, he does.

KIRK: I can't quite place him, but.

Captain KIRK: All the comforts of home indeed, Mister Cochrane. Where'd you get the antiques?

Zefram COCHRANE: You mean my instruments? I imagine things have changed a lot since I crashed.

KIRK: Not that much.

(Hands a piece over to Spock to examine.)

Zefram COCHRANE: Zefram.

Captain KIRK: Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centuri, the discoverer of the space warp?

COCHRANE: That's right, Captain.

MCCOY: But that's impossible. Zefram Cochrane died a hundred and fifty years ago.

SPOCK: The name of Zefram Cochrane is revered throughout the known galaxy. Planets were named after him. Great universities, cities.

KIRK: Isn't your story a little improbable, Mister Cochrane?

WILLIAM J. CLINTON

42nd President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Teleconference Announcing a Defense Diversification Grant for Charleston, South Carolina

March 23, 1994

The President. Mayor?

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Mr. President.

The President. How are you doing, Mayor?

Mayor Riley. Well, I'm doing fine. How are you?

The President. I'm great. Nice to hear your voice.

Mayor Riley. Well, it's great to hear yours. And we're pulling for you, and just keep fighting and working hard. We're in your corner. And thanks for all the tremendous cooperation we've been getting from the administration with our reconversion efforts. It's been terrific.

The President. Well, thank you. As you know, I'm calling you with some good news today. The Secretary of Labor, Bob Reich, is awarding $15 million in defense diversification program funds to the Charleston County Employment and Training Administration.

Mayor Riley. Well, that's wonderful.

The President. We hope it will help to retrain about 1,920 people who are being laid off from your naval complex there.

Mayor Riley. Well, Mr. President, that's great news, and it will be a huge help. We've got great workers with great skills. They will be making a career change, and to get the training to move from one career to another is essential. And this is terrific news for the Charleston community; it really is.

The President. Well, I just want to say again to you what you and I have already talked about so many times privately, and that is that I'm committed not just to training and preparing those folks for other careers but seeing to it that the base facilities themselves are successfully redeveloped. And I know that your BEST committee is aggressively moving forward with redevelopment planning. And I commend you for that, and I just want to tell you so you can tell them that I am, personally, and this whole administration is committed to working with them and making the best use of those enormously important facilities there.

Mayor Riley. Well, that's wonderful. Thank you, Mr. President. We have a great committee. They've done a terrific job and I want you to know, from the people in your White House, Secretary Perry on down, the response couldn't be better and more enthusiastic and supportive.

And as I told you in our private conversation, our goal—and told Secretary Perry—is to make Charleston a model that you can point to of where a major reconversion occurred and occurred successfully.

The President. Well, I know Secretary Perry and the Navy Secretary, John Dalton, have been down there, and I know that the Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment has already provided about $2 million in planning grants. But we want to keep going, and we want to assist those workers as they begin their transition to new careers. And I think you've already got a transition assistance center open on the base.

Mayor Riley. We do, yes, sir, a very fine one.

The President. So we now will be able to provide with today's grant the full array of services through that one-stop career center there, including counseling and basic skills remediation and occupational skills training and other kinds of things that we believe will really help to get people new jobs, and hopefully as good or better than the ones they're losing. We're going to do the very best we can on that.

Mayor Riley. It's going to be a huge help, and we are going to make Charleston a model, one that you can proudly point to.

The President. You can do it. I know you can. We'll do whatever we can to work with you.

Mayor Riley. Well, thank you. Thanks for everything.

The President. Tell everybody in Charleston I said hello. I always love coming there, and I hope I get to come again soon.

Mayor Riley. Well, I will. Somebody just a couple of weeks ago gave me a picture of you and I talking on January 1st, 1992.

The President. It was the first stop I made in the new year, 1992.

Mayor Riley. That's right. Well, I've got a picture of us chatting. I was doing the talking, and they subtitled it, "Low country advice." [Laughter]

The President. Well, it was pretty high-brow advice from the low country, I'll tell you that.

Mayor Riley. Well, it was heartfelt, and we're very proud of you.

The President. Good luck to you.

Mayor Riley. Thanks for all your help.

The President. Thanks, bye.

NOTE: The President spoke at 10:44 a.m. from the Oval Office at the White House. In his remarks, he referred to the Building Economic Solutions Together (BEST) committee on redevelopment of the Charleston naval complex.

The Text Message

No Enemy Contact, but Alien Contact…

june 6, 2011 by textmessageguest, posted in military records, vietnam war

Today’s post is written by Joe Gillette, a processing archivist at Archives II.

During the Vietnam War, American army commands maintained daily journals documenting assorted events. Most entries were relatively mundane, documenting staff meetings, personnel travel, incoming or outgoing messages, and the like. Some were more administratively significant, such as changes in command, the awarding of medals, or the filing of reports. Naturally, many contain descriptions of combat against the enemy.

Then there are entries that more closely resemble an episode of the X-Files than a war movie.

One such entry appears in the January 6, 1969 daily journal of the 23rd Infantry Division’s Chu Lai Defense Command. The command’s mission was to coordinate ground defense of the Chu Lai Defense Sector on the Vietnamese coast about 40 miles southeast of Da Nang. Base defenses included a system of numbered observation towers ringing the base. Towers routinely reported anything unusual or potentially threatening to the base. At 0152 hours (1:52 am), the day’s journal records Tower 72 making such a report:

Twr 72 rpts object flying into their area about 700m infront [sic] of them, AZ 310°. Object came in slow over the ASP & landed. When object moves it has a glowing light. It is about 15 – 20 ft across. It is shaped like a big egg. Control twr rpts their radar did not pick anything up. Object also does not seem to have any sound to it when it moves.

The only logged follow-up action was notification of the Duty Officer. Subsequent journals provide no further information on the incident. Peculiarly (if one is conspiratorially-inclined), the journals for the next two days, January 7 & 8, are missing.

Possible conventional explanations for the sighting exist. Tracer rounds and flares both create illumination. But tracer rounds don’t float to the ground and certainly aren’t shaped like an “egg”, and flares might float to the ground, but aren’t egg shaped either. Additionally, drug use by soldiers, particularly by 1969, was a known problem in Vietnam. But two or more soldiers typically manned these towers. Assuming this was a drug-induced vision, it’s difficult to imagine they each experienced the same hallucination, although if they were observing something they could not readily identify, one might have convinced the others they were seeing a UFO. Boredom too could have resulted in a bout of creative storytelling, but if discovered, the soldiers risked disciplinary action. So while potential conventional explanations exist for both the sighting and the report, nothing in the journals tells us which of those might have been at work.

The truth may be out there, but it isn’t in these records.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 11/22/10 1:42 PM
After waking up and thinking about it, I am wondering if the dream I had just before waking up was of me posing as Kerry Burgess at his high school reunion in Ashdown Arkansas in the summer of 1994. None of the details remind me specifically of the specific memory of that time, such as several of us at a bar in Texarkana that first night, but I saw people in the dream that makes me think that is what that dream was about. But in the dream, I was in a bar, although that could have been a restraunt and we were in a reserved room, and I was drinking a few beers and that is just how my artificial memory records that evening. But yet, I don't think that dream and the memory are the same.

I just noticed this film a few minutes ago. Reading about it reminded me of last afternoon when I was waiting for my laundry to finish and I was standing there and I just happened to notice that my left wrist seems to be slightly smaller than my left wrist and I started to wonder if that is because I broke my arm and that point, which is actually between my wrist and my elbow but closer to my wrist, and the reason for the disparity is because the bone reformed at a slightly different angle than it was before. I thought about it for a while and I thought about measuring it to see how much different it is but I don't think I have a tape measure and so I thought about using a string to simply measure the difference.

I thought about it more because the poster with one one of the actors, who I guess is the "Jake Lonergan" shows him standing there with some kind of large alien-looking contraption on his left arm near the wrist.

Cowboys & Aliens (film)

Cowboys & Aliens is an upcoming American science fiction western film directed by Jon Favreau and starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Noah Ringer, Paul Dano, Ana de la Reguera and Clancy Brown, based on the graphic novel of the same name. It is to be released July 29, 2011.

In 1873 Arizona, a loner named Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) awakens with no memory of his past and a mysterious shackle around his wrist. He enters the town of Absolution where he learns he is wanted by many people, including Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford), a harsh leader who rules the town with an iron fist. But Absolution soon faces an even greater threat when mysterious forces attack the town from the sky, sparing no one in their path. While Jake's shackle holds the key to defeating them, he must align himself with Dolarhyde and other former enemies to make a stand against this mysterious and more powerful new foe.

NANCY: Zefram, we frighten you. We've never frightened you before. Loneliness. This is loneliness. Oh, what a bitter thing. Oh, Zefram, it's so sad. How do you bear it, this loneliness?

KIRK: Spock, check out the shuttlecraft. Engine, communications, everything.

NANCY: That will not be necessary, Captain. Your vehicle will operate as before, so will the communications device.

COCHRANE: You're letting us go?

NANCY: We could do nothing now to stop you. You said we would not know love because we were not human. Now we are human. We'll know the change of days. We will know death. But to touch the hand of man, nothing is as important.

COCHRANE: You're very beautiful.

NANCY: Part of me understands. Part does not. But it pleases me.

COCHRANE: I could explain many things.

Dr. CAINE: He must have brought us here for a reason. He must have saved us for a reason.

Dr. RUSH: Yeah, saved from what? Do you remember? I mean, the burning bush spoke to Moses. Gabriel, was it, spoke to Abraham? Yet you - you've returned here with no proof of your saviour one way or the other.

(Caine can't take his cynicism any longer.)

CAINE: I'll leave you to your work.

(He turns and heads towards the rear of the shuttle. Nicholas hesitates for a moment, then calls after him.)

RUSH: Let me ask you ...

(Caine stops and turns back.)

RUSH: The shuttle was restored to its original condition by the aliens who sent you here - better than it was before, even.

CAINE: Well, that sounds to me more like the work of God than aliens.

RUSH: Well, if this shuttle has been restored so perfectly, then why weren't all of you?

(Caine frowns.)

RUSH: I mean, Norris wasn't born with astigmatism, was he? Mr. Chan surely had a full head of hair at one time. All of you have enormous gaps in your memory.

CAINE: What's your point?

RUSH: Well, either He's lost His touch, or God's got nothing to do with this.

I wash my hands before I brush my teeth and I wash my hands after I brush my teeth.

Before I washed my hands a few minutes ago I noted that I had dried blood on the knuckle at the middle of almost each finger and then at almost every knuckle on the surface of my hand above where the finger starts. The cracking skin has started in the last few years on the underside of my hands too although that is not too bad yet and is not close to how bad as the back of my hands.
