For several days the past week I had decided to make another excursion to downtown Spokane.

The whole point was to not check the numbers until I got back.

Red Storm Rising (1986)

Tom Clancy

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 31 – Demons

&&&
&&&

"American fighters!" shouted a number of Russian pilots. Their threat receivers instantly told the pilots that fighter-type radars were locked on their aircraft.

The Soviet fighter commander was not surprised. Surely the Americans would not risk their heavy bombers again without a proper escort. He'd ignore these and bore in for the B-52s, as his training dictated. The MiG radars were heavily jammed, their ranges cut in half and as yet unable to track any targets at all. He ordered his pilots to be alert for incoming missiles, confident that they could avoid those that they saw, and had all his aircraft increase power. Next, he ordered all but two of his reserve force to leave Keflavik and come east to support him.

The Americans needed only seconds to lock onto targets. Each Tomcat carried four Sparrows and four Sidewinders. The Sparrows went first. There were sixteen MiGs in the air. Most had at least two missiles targeted, but the Sparrows were radar-guided. Each American fighter had to remain pointed at its target until the missile hit. This ran the risk of closing within range of Soviet missiles, and the Tomcats were not equipped with protective jammers.

The Americans had taken position up-sun from the Russians. Just as their radars began to burn through the American jamming, the Sparrows arrived, the first directly from the sun, exploding its MiG in midair and warning everyone in its flight. The Soviet aircraft began radical jinks up and down, some pilots breaking into hard turns as they saw the seven-inch wide missiles racing in, but four more found their targets, and in moments there were three hard kills and one severely damaged aircraft that turned to limp for home.

The Jolly Rogers turned as soon as their missiles were spent and ran northeast with the Soviets in pursuit. The Russian commander was relieved that the American missiles had performed so poorly, yet still enraged at the loss of five aircraft. His remaining aircraft bore in on after-burner as their targeting radars began to defeat the American jamming. The American fighter escort had had its turn, he knew. Now it was his turn. They ran northeast, their visored eyes alternating between squints into the sun and quick looks at their radarscopes to pick out targets. They never looked down. The lead MiG finally had a target and launched two missiles.

Twenty thousand feet below them, shielded from ground radar by a pair of mountains, twelve Tomcats of the Black Aces went to afterburner, their radars shut off as the twin-engined fighters rocketed skyward. Within ninety seconds the pilots began to hear the growling signal that indicated their Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles were tracking targets. Seconds later, sixteen missiles were fired from a range of two miles.

Six Russian pilots never knew what hit them. Of the eleven MiGs, eight were hit in a matter of seconds. The commander's luck remained briefly as he jerked his fighter around, causing a Sidewinder to break lock and fly into the sun, but now what could he do? He saw two Tomcats running south, away from his remaining fighters. It was too late to organize an attack-his wingman was gone, and the only friendly aircraft he could see was to his north-so the colonel reefed his MiG into an eight-g turn and dove at the American, oblivious to the warning buzz of his threat receiver. Both Sparrows launched from the second group of Black Aces struck his wing. The MiG came apart around him.

The Americans had no time to gloat. The mission commander reported a second group of MiGs heading their way and the American squadrons regrouped to meet them, forming a solid wall of twenty-four aircraft, their radars shut down for two minutes as the MiGs raced into the cloud of jamming. The Russian second-in-command was making a serious error. His fellow pilots were in danger. He had to go to their rescue. One group of Tomcat volleyed off its remaining Sparrows; the other fired Sidewinders. A total of thirty-eight missiles closed in on eight Soviet aircraft who had no clear picture of what they were running into. Half of them never did, blotted out of the sky by American air-to-air missiles; three more were damaged.

The Tomcat pilots all wanted to close, but the commander ordered them off. They were all short of fuel, and Stornoway was seven hundred miles off. They turned east, ducking through the cloud of aluminum chaff left by the B-52s. The Americans would claim thirty-seven kills, quite a score since they had expected a total of only twenty-seven Russian aircraft. In fact, of twenty-six MiGs, only five undamaged aircraft remained. A stunned air base commander immediately began rescue operations. Soon the parachute division's attack helicopters were flying northeast, searching for downed pilots.

Flight Of The Intruder

Now, what altitude were you flying at?

Grafton: Uh... 200. 200 maybe, AGL. I pushed the nose over... started a shallow... dive in on the gun and leveled out. Some SAMs had tried us when we'd come in, and I wanted to... to get out of there low and fast.

USS Independence CV 62 Commander Air Group: You came out by a different route?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Yeah. Yes, sir. About 30 miles, I guess.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: Lucky small-arms fire.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Hmm.

Commander Air Group: All right. Just bad luck, that's all. Just ran out of luck. Take Mr. Grafton off the flight schedule. You got liberty in Subic in a couple days. You need the rest.

Parker: What was your target?

Grafton: A suspected truck park.

Parker: You hit it?

Grafton: Oh, yeah, we hit it. Trees. A bunch of trees. There was nothing there again.

Camparelli: What's your problem? Spit it out.

Grafton: Well, I don't think trees in a suspected truck park is worth a man's life.

Camparelli: Targets are picked for political consideration, Mr. Grafton, with the best intelligence we have available. You have any trouble with that?

Grafton: Well, I don't think losing Morg is a political consideration, sir.

Camparelli: Look... I know losing McPherson is lousy. I don't like the targets, either. I hate them. But... I don't want any blood feuds going on. Half the time, it isn't the mission you're flying that kills you, it's the one before. Do you read me?

Red Storm Rising (1986)

Tom Clancy

(from internet transcript)

20 – The Dance of the Vampires

&&&

"Toland, when do you expect our friends to arrive?"

"The RORSAT passes overhead in twenty minutes. They'll probably want that data before they take off. They could take off at any time after that, Admiral. If the Backfires tank up partway down and proceed at max power, two hours. That's worst case. More likely four to five hours."

"CAG?"

The air group commander looked tense. "Each carrier has a Hummer radar bird up, a pair of F-14 Tomcats with each. Two more Tomcats on the catapults, ready to go at five minutes' notice, another Hummer and a tanker. The rest of the fighters are at plus-fifteen on the roof, loaded and fueled. The flight crews are briefed. One Prowler over the formation, the rest ready to go at fifteen. The A-7s have buddy stores rigged. We're ready. Foch has her Crusaders at plus-fifteen. Good birds, but short legs. When the time comes we'll use them for overhead coverage."

KIROVSK, R.S.F.S.R.

The Radar Ocean Reconnaissance Satellite, called a RORSAT, passed over the formation at 0310. Its radar transmitter noted the formation and its cameras tracked in on their wakes. Five minutes later, the data was in Moscow. Fifteen minutes after that, flight crews were given their final brief at four military air bases grouped around the city of Kirovsk on the Kola Peninsula. The crews were quiet, no less tense than their American targets. Both sides mulled over the same thoughts. This was the exercise both sides had practiced for over fifteen years. Millions of hours of planning, studies and simulations were about to be put to the test.

The Badgers lifted off first, pushed by their twin Mikulin engines. Each takeoff was an effort. The bombers were so heavily loaded that the tower controllers reached out with their minds to wish every aircraft into the still morning air. Once off the ground they headed north, forming up into loose regimental formations just north of Murmansk before heading west and skirting past the North Cape, before their slow left turns took them toward the North Atlantic.

Twenty miles off the North Russian coast, USS Narwhal hovered beneath the surface of a slate-gray sea. The quietest submarine in the U.S. fleet, she was a specialized intelligence-gathering platform that spent more time on the Soviet coast than did some ships in the Russian Navy Her three thin ESM antennae were raised, as was a million-dollar search periscope. Technicians aboard listened in on low-power radio conversations between aircraft as they formed up. Three uniformed intelligence specialists and a civilian from the National Security Agency evaluated the strength of the raid and decided that it was large enough to risk a warning broadcast. An additional mast was raised and aimed at a communications satellite twenty-four thousand miles away. The burst transmission lasted less than a fifteenth of a second.

USS NIMITZ

The message was automatically relayed to four separate communications stations, and within thirty seconds was at SACLANT headquarters. Five minutes after that, Toland had the yellow message form in his hand. He walked immediately to Admiral Baker, and handed the message over: 0418Z REALTIME SENDS WARNING AIR RAID TAKE OFF 0400 HEADING WEST FROM KOLA ESTIMATE FIVE REGIMENT PLUS.

Baker checked his watch. "Fast work. CAG?"

The air group commander looked at the form and walked to a phone. "Shoot off the plus-fives, recall the patrol aircraft when they get to station, and set up two more Tomcats and a Hummer on plus-five. I want the returning aircraft turned around immediately. Reserve one catapult for tankers." He came back. "With your permission, sir, I propose to put another pair of F-14s and another Hummer up in an hour, and put all the fighters on plus-five. At 0600, the rest of the fighters go up, with tankers in support. We'll meet them with everything we have about two hundred miles out and kick their ass."

Boomer: Copy that.

Helo: Ease up there, Boomer. Take a deep breath.

Boomer: There's a lot of jamming going on. Cylons are using a lot of defensive decoys. Sorting through them, but-

I guess it has been going on for about one hour now. I have never before today heard thunder last more than one or two minutes.

The current sound of thunder is not continuous but it sounds like a normal thunderstorm during the summer that I remember from living in the southern United States.

I decided many hours ago today to watch this DVD video this morning and I had decided many hours ago, sometime around midnight thereabouts, to watch it at this current time I am watching the DVD.

I woke up from miserable sleep the last time I was asleep and I woke up thinking I should keep a journal to record the body count of the people I shot by gunfire in my sleeping dreams. I was dreaming of places I had never seen before. An entire family was out to get me. I saw a guy swear vengeance over the coffin with his dead father in it. They were all gunning for me. I saw myself shooting people. I remember thinking I needed to shoot them in the head because I only had so much ammunition. I saw myself hesitate because I didn't want to shoot him. I saw myself, from the perspective of my eyes, thinking about how the two shooters were there to draw my fire while someone else snuck up behind me. I saw myself running at the first shooter and I saw the gunbarrel up close as I ran at him. I don't recall if that is the point I woke up. There was other scenes of me shooting people that I have now largely forgotten. Oh, right. The guy on the horse. In another dream I had taken cover behind a wooden fence post and I vaguely recall a barbed wire fence. I felt a lot of gratification when I wheeled around and used my rifle, which wasn't a rifle in the dream but a long heavy duty flat-blade screwdriver I remember from my toolcase in the context of my memory of working on bank ATM's in the early 1990's, and with that rifle I saw myself shooting and hitting that guy on the horse at a fairly long distance and I saw what seemed to be a Budweiser beer bottle in his hand and center over his chest and I saw it explode as one of my bullets hit it.

I paused the video at the point of the dialog about the birth certificate. I sat here afterwards watching the video afterwards and wondering about how the "unpaid intern" dialog conforms to my theory about my time travel communications, because I was certain, as I sat here watching it, that I was not going to pause the video to reference that dialog. But now here now here I am.

The scar on my left hand is a bullet scar. I had to dig out the bullet with a small screwdriver I had in my pocket. Somebody, I think often was my brother, asked me why I did that with the screwdriver because that screwdriver probably caused more problems, since it was non-sterile, than just leaving the bullet in my hand and waiting for proper medical treatment.

Other people were around me but they are vague. Also, I didn't care about writing about my sleeping dreams but the fact is I don't recall any of them now. Something might jog my memory later today about those earlier dreams but to write of them now would sort of defeat the purpose. I do not trust human memory and I am always suspicious about memories that are instigated, for lack of a better word. I suspect that some memory in the human mind is caused by suggestion.

So anyway, I saw a common theme today in my sleeping dream: corridors. Doorways. I think I was going into a hotel. I have been thinking ever since that was supposed to be a safe house.

And I sit here now at my desk and I think to myself: Why now?

Why now am I having such obvious prescient sleeping dreams?

That has been happening for a long time now and it certainly hasn't helped me personally. I have gained nothing from it. I haven't seen in my sleeping dreams the winning numbers for some multi-million dollar lottery drawing.

And if this is some kind of superpower I have then why now? Why is it only now in recent years I have become aware of it? I am not even really certain when it started.

My guess is that it works on differing levels of conscious to my human mind and that means it could be a power I have had all my life.

Subject: RE: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the man who knows what you're going to do before you do it.

All right, well, after finishing about 3:45 PM Pacific watching for the first time the episode's from last week’s "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" I can honestly say I'm doing something right.

The dreams from this morning have largely faded from my mind but I do recall the details I wanted to note in my journal but that I have not until this moment and now I write what I thought about writing after waking up this morning on this new episode "NCIS Tuesday."

There it was right in front of me: 8/7c.

That means 5 PM Pacific time is when the new episodes will be first broadcast inside the United States. I won't actually start watching them until 11 PM Eastern time which is my 8 PM Pacific Time here in the King County and Seattle metro area. On a side note, I noted a couple days ago when I watched part of that premiere episode for the 2010 "The Walking Dead" television series the setting is listed as "King County." That means the starring character is a deputy sheriff for "King County." As I wrote I looked it and there is no King County in Georgia. That was also not a detail associated with the comic book that series is based on.

I have wondered before about why those criminal targets continue to follow their pattern. Seems to me they would wise up after a while.

That is why I'm waiting until 5 PM to transmit across the wire these details.

I don't have any way of comparing with what is broadcast at 8 PM Eastern with what I observe at 8 PM Pacific though.

As for the dreams I had while sleeping this morning the details aren't really that earth-shaking.

The reason I am making this statement is because of extended nature of one of the very detailed dream I had while sleeping this morning.

The one I awoke from the final time and got of bed after is consistent with what I read on the internet at the news sites I track.

In the news some police officers in Florida, the county Miami is in I think it was, were fired because they were caught on video and they were not doing their jobs as they were supposed to. That was consistent with thre dream because I saw myself in a group of people and another walked up and needed someone to take on a duty shift somewhere and no one wanted to do it and I spoke that I had just finished my shift. I have thought all day though that I am not articulating it correctly but I cannot think of anything else.

The dream that got me started on this initiative is the very extended dream where I saw from my perspective that I was walking in an urban and I had the vague certainty I was downtown but that doesn't make sense because when I found the building I was looking for I had clearly entered the offices of the law firm of Chad Trammell. Chad came in soon after, introduced me to his lovely wife, and the rest of that very extended dream was of me either standing around or towards the end sitting at a conference table. There were quite a few other people in that office building but I don't now recall any other conservation and I'm not sure if I ever did during the dream, almost as though I was watching television with sound off. I also cannot visualize details about those other people.

Because I wonder often that my dreams might be the products of paranormal insight I wonder if I am getting something wrong about the context. That would be why I saw myself in Seattle, although that wasn't clear. My guess is that some scumbag severe racketeering and al Qaida protecting law firm based here in Seattle continues to conspire unlawful activity against me and that might have started to conspire unlawful activities against The Trammell law firm and that is why I have become aware of them and thus they are guilty as proclaimed by United States military tribunal and they are guilty of treason against the United States of America during time of war and for which severe penalties are lawful.

The dream I woke from had me walking on a beach somewhere. That's what make me think again about that article I read about the police officers being fired in Florida. I saw myself talking to a small boy who was with her mother as just as with that actor Andre Braugher he had on dark sunglasses and I was wearing similar dark sunglasses and I was talking to him about our sunglasses as you might talk to a child that small. Then his mother told me to stop pestering her son. Then I was walking along the same beach after walking away from them and I was walking towards a destination along with one of those people from that group with the scene about the duty shifts or whatever it was. We seemed to be walking towards that place of work. I saw a large hotel up ahead. Then that guy started walking out into the water into the ocean. The water was only about an inch deep it seemed. I asked him how was the water. Then I was in the hotel or so it seemed. I was in an elevator and I pushed the 6 button or the 50 button. A person entered and I thought it was the actor Micheal Douglas but it could have been his daughter I thought. She was muscular though and I wondered if that was his son. Then the elevator seemed to stop. The lights on the buttons went out and I wasn't sure if it was still moving and I didn't want to be stuck in that small elevator. When I walked in cables were on the floor and I used my foot to move them out of the way. I was reading the writing on exposed cables on the walls. That's when I woke up and got out of my bed and set down at my desk.

I am trying to prove that my dreams are prescient.

Bashing the heads of Teddy Bears with a sledgehammer.

That's what I saw myself doing in one of the many sleeping dreams last time I was asleep.

They were arranged in neat order and seemed to have their backs attached somehow to a wall.

I had a short-handle hammer that I was using to bash their little stuffed heads while being careful not to strike the wall behind them. Sometimes I had to hit them several times to knock them down from the wall they were attached to.

What was the most striking parts is how they threw up their hands in terror as I was about to strike them.

There was some sort of points system associated with the activity.

Just a sleeping dream but I find myself thinking a lot about their terrified reaction just before I hit them over the head.

I have documented that my sleeping dreams are often prescient of observations I make later.

Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fifth Amendment (Amendment V) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights and, among other things, protects individuals from being compelled to be witnesses against themselves in criminal cases. "Pleading the Fifth" is thus a colloquial term for invoking the right that allows witnesses to decline to answer questions where the answers might incriminate them, and generally without having to suffer a penalty for asserting the right. This evidentiary privilege ensures that defendants cannot be compelled to become witnesses at their own trials.

from my online journal as Kerry Burgess

Apr 18, 2017 9:19am

As happens sometimes much to my annoyance I cannot sleep more than a few hours at a time before having to get up and that happens some times. I can only take naps before having to get up and sit down again at my desk. I wrote once about how that would be a good habit for a US Navy commanding officer at sea and I am neither.

More violence. I rarely write about my sleeping dreams when considering the number of occurrences compared to the instances I talk about.

This one that is still on my mind starts with the only scene I can now remember. A woman was trying to break through a door to a laboratory room. I can vaguely visualize she's wearing a white lab coat we typically see on actors on television. She does break open the door. Inside there is some sort of calamity. An accident. I think I could hear people screaming. The only result she had was to become affected by whatever catastrophe just happened in that room. She seems to be irradiated. I can see a well-defined area of the danger, which unlike radiation is not seeping out through the doorway. But she is instantly changed somehow. I can see little red plus symbols floating around the air.

She goes back to the hallway and the other woman from the hallway is following along with her. The irradiated woman is nicknamed "Mother", according to voice dialog I cannot remember hearing after being awake, and she goes into another laboratory room. She begins eating mice from cages that were used for experiments. Suddenly a cage drops down from towards the ceiling and the cage is somehow hovering at head-level of the unaffected woman and inside the cage is the splayed out figure of a bat that was being dissected. The bat has its eyes open and I aware it is talking to the woman who is unaffected and who is watching the other woman eat the mice. I don't recognize either woman from real life.

The scene changes and I seem to be seeing myself from my perspective and I seem to be watching all that on television although I never actually visualize the television but that seems to be the case. I see that I am sitting in a recliner, which I have not sat in for as long as I can recall in real life, and I have pencils and notebooks in the cushions on my left side. I pull those out and I am sketching out notes I will soon publish on my Facebook page. I am noting that "Mother" must be a woman, I can hear myself thinking, thinking about stuff from my supposed invisible memories of the 1990s as I do now everyday in real life, who was one of her medical colleagues. During this scene in the recliner there is something about a large sketchbook but that explanation has faded now from my mind as though that was an important detail about an earlier sleeping dream.

I woke up thinking about how I used to write in my blog that my sleeping dreams, when I lived there in the Vermont Inn-Apartments in downtown Seattle, were about the waking-hours work I was doing for my blog hvom.blogspot.com during the years 2007 and 2008 and so on and that established that my sleeping dreams were sometimes about the work I did and thus I established that my sleeping dreams were sometimes of actual memory.

So anyway, I decided to make this note because of the bat. I was thinking after waking about that hacker and the sirens.

Maybe telling all of you about it is unimportant. Perhaps somehow there is some force that is simply trying to prepare me mentally for something that is going to happen. Part of that mental preparation includes me writing publicly about my thoughts, some sort of psychological treatment to keep me from bottling up in my mind the horror of what I have seen and what I suspect I will see caused by others.

Long story short. The more I search unsucessfully the longer this blog post gets. Somewhere in my posts, annoying as hell to me I cannot find again a reference to it now, I have noted that I can still remember and even visualize certain sleeping dreams I had years ago. That's the whole point of this note. And the whole point of any of this stuff, my original intention, was to get people to tell me stuff they think that I may not have already thought of. Now my expectations, over a decade later, are very low, but still, annoys the hell out of me I can't find those earlier notes I made and there isn't much point to this if what I write is simply going to tell people what to think instead of them coming to think of it themselves. And why does that matter? No one's even trying to talk to me. And still, this still isn't the post I wanted to make today. But still, if I didn't have this blog then I think would literally just go crazy out of my mind from not have a means of expression.

City of Spokane Washington USA

Upriver Dam

The Upriver Hydroelectric Dam on the Spokane River is owned and operated by the City of Spokane, specifically, the City's Water Department.

Upriver Dam is a straight, concrete gravity dam. Concrete gravity dams rely on the weight of the concrete of which they are built to resist the forces (gravity, water pressure) to which they are subjected.

The Dam operates in a “run-of-the-river” mode, which means there is little or no water storage provided by the dam. As a result, Upriver Dam is subject to seasonal river flows.

The original Upriver Dam was built in 1894. A new concrete dam replaced the old wooden one in 1933. Significant upgrades also were completed in the 1980s.

The Dam generates more than 70 million kilowatts of electricity, annually. Power generated at the Dam is used to pump water to the City's water customers. The Water Department delivers up to 180 million gallons of clean, safe drinking water per day to more than 210,000 people in our community.

Spokane Falls

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spokane Falls is the name of a waterfall and dam on the Spokane River, located in the central business district in downtown Spokane, Washington. The city of Spokane was also initially named "Spokane Falls".

Features

The falls consists of an Upper Falls and a Lower Falls. The Upper Falls is the site of the Upper Falls Dam, a diversion dam constructed in 1920 that directs the water into the Upper Falls intake on the south channel of the Spokane River. The Upper Falls Power Plant incorporates a Francis turbine capable of generating 10 MW. The Lower Falls is the site of a second diversion dam, the Monroe Street Dam. Completed in 1890, it was the first dam built on the Spokane River and is currently the longest-running hydroelectric generation facility in Washington state. Its Kaplan turbine has a generating capacity of 14.82 MW.

Werner Forssmann

Born: 29 August 1904, Berlin, Germany

Died: 1 June 1979, Schopfheim, West Germany (now Germany)

Affiliation at the time of the award: Mainz University, Mainz, Federal Republic of Germany

Prize motivation: "for their discoveries concerning heart catheterization and pathological changes in the circulatory system"

Field: cardiovascular physiology

Prize share: 1/3

Life

Werner Forssmann was born in Berlin, where he also studied medicine. As a newly educated doctor, he served in Eberswalde and conducted his Nobel Prize-awarded experiment there in 1929. His experimentation met resistance, however, which impeded continued research in the field. After being chief surgeon in Dresden and Berlin, Werner Forssmann served as a doctor in the army during World War II. After the war ended, he worked as a district medical officer, among other things. Werner Forssmann and his wife, also a doctor, had six children

Work

In 1929 the physician Werner Forssmann saw a picture in a book showing how a tube was inserted into the heart of a horse through a vein. A balloon at the other end of the tube showed changes in pressure. He was convinced that a similar experiment could be carried out on people. Despite the fact that his boss forbade him, Werner Forssmann conducted the experiment on himself. From the crook of his arm he inserted a thin catheter through a vein into his heart and took an X-ray photo. The experiment paved the way for many types of heart studies.

KENNEDY: I have a lot of questions to ask so if there are no objections. What can you tell us about the power source the Goa'uld use to power their weapons, ships?

TEAL'C: Nothing.

KENNEDY: I see. Do you yourself have an understanding of the physics behind the Stargate?

TEAL'C: No.

KENNEDY: I see.

TEAL'C: Knowledge of Goa'uld magic is forbidden.

Jack walks up the stairs.

O'NEILL: It's not magic Teal'c. They just want you to think that. Permission to barge in Sir?

KENNEDY: Colonel O'Neill. I was hoping to meet you. Your mission report from Chulak made for the most engrossing analysis of my career.

O'NEILL: Well thanks. What was your favourite part?

HAMMOND: Perhaps now is not the time Colonel?

O'NEILL: General, you know what I went and did? I told Teal'c how we all respect a persons rights in this country.

KENNEDY: I assure you, there is nothing untoward taking place here, Colonel. Please, join us.

O'NEILL: Thank you. Hey Teal'c.

TEAL'C: O'Neill.

O'NEILL: That's Teal'c with an apostrophe. T, E, A, L, apostrophe, C.

HAMMOND: Colonel.

O'NEILL: Yes sir.

KENNEDY: Very well, Teal'c. What can you tell me about the Goa'ulds?

TEAL'C: They rule by force. Their numbers were very few but they are growing.

KENNEDY: How many worlds do they control?

TEAL'C: Many hundreds. Perhaps more.

KENNEDY: And should we expect to encounter these Goa'ulds everywhere we go?

Jack mouths to Hammond, `we'.

TEAL'C: It is possible. But there are many more worlds the Goa'ulds have no use for. On those worlds the people are abandoned and left to fend for themselves.

KENNEDY: Is there a leadership or Government with which we could negotiate a peace.

TEAL'C: Some, like Apophis, are great Kings and rule over many worlds as their Gods but they have no need for peace. If they could kill you, they would.

KENNEDY: Could they? They have spacecraft, right?

TEAL'C: Yes. Without a Stargate, such a journey would take many months, perhaps even years. It would take many vessels, many slave armies.

O'NEILL: We're not that much of a nuisance, just yet.

KENNEDY: These slaves, where do they come from?

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.

This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV.

KENNEDY: With Teal'c, sir, I have his travel orders as well.

HAMMOND: You do realise without his co operation in finding an anaesthetic, the operation might have been a failure? I think we owe him something for that.

KENNEDY: Unfortunately, Teal'c is now carrying the only living Goa'uld available for study and we do need to study it, sir, make no mistake on that. These aliens are possibly the greatest threat this country has ever known.

HAMMOND: I'm well aware of the threat, Colonel. This facility is the front line. It's the reason this command exists. We just go about things differently around here.

KENNEDY: I see, well, I'll make the transport arrangements in the morning.

Stargate SG-1 - Children of the Gods - television series premiere Season 1 Episode 1 - Sunday 27 July 1997

Episode Summary

The System Lord Apophis launches an attack through the Stargate, tucked away by the military after the events of the movie, and the SGC program is reactivated and given a new objective - seek out and find the alien invaders and defeat them. Jack O'Neill is called out of retirement and sent to locate Daniel Jackson on Abydos.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

Chulak, day. O'Neill, Carter, Daniel, and Teal'c are leading the group of refugees towards the Stargate.

United States Air Force Colonel Jack O'NEILL: We've got less than an hour. How we doing?

United States Air Force captain Samantha CARTER: We lost a few when we got to the forest.

TEAL'C: They will be hunted down and killed. Anyone who does not exist to serve the gods is their enemy.

O'NEILL: And that makes you...?

TEAL'C: I am a Jaffa. Bred to serve so that they may live.

Doctor Daniel JACKSON: I don't understand.

Teal'c stops then, and the entire group comes to a halt. Teal'c pulls back a section of his torn chainmail to reveal an X-shaped incision in his stomach. A small symbiote - smaller and paler than the mature Goa'uld - emerges partially from the incision. Carter and Daniel jump back, and a woman screams.

O'NEILL: What the hell is that?

TEAL'C: It is an infant Goa'uld, the larval form of the gods. I have carried one since I was a child, as all Jaffa carry one.

He turns and starts walking again, and the group gets moving.

O'NEILL: Well, get it out of there.

TEAL'C: In exchange for carrying the infant Goa'uld into maturity, a Jaffa receives perfect health and long life. If I were to remove it, I would eventually die.

O'NEILL: Hell, if I were you, I'd take my chances.

"Under The Milky Way"

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty
Sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight

Lower the curtain down in Memphis
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation
Under the Milky Way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

And it's something quite peculiar
Something that's shimmering and white
It leads you here despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight

Aerobraking

Aerobraking is a spaceflight maneuver that reduces the high point of an elliptical orbit (apoapsis) by flying the vehicle through the atmosphere at the low point of the orbit (periapsis), using drag to slow the spacecraft. Aerobraking saves fuel, compared to the direct use of a rocket engine, when the spacecraft requires a low orbit after arriving at a body with an atmosphere.

Flight planning

Flight planning is the process of producing a flight plan to describe a proposed aircraft flight. It involves two safety-critical aspects: fuel calculation, to ensure that the aircraft can safely reach the destination, and compliance with air traffic control requirements, to minimise the risk of mid-air collision. In addition, planners normally wish to minimise flight cost by appropriate choice of route, height, and speed, and by loading the minimum necessary fuel on board.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29

Project Orion (nuclear propulsion)

Project Orion was the first engineering design study of a spacecraft powered by nuclear pulse propulsion

Reaction mass for Orion would have been built into the bombs or dropped between 'pulses' to provide thrust.

The smallest 4000 ton model planned for ground launch from Jackass Flats, Nevada had each blast add 30 mph (50 km/h) to the craft's velocity. A graphite based oil was to be sprayed on the pusher plate before each explosion to prevent ablation of the pusher plate. This sequence would be repeated thousands of times, like an atomic pogo stick.

Orion's potential performance was stunning, at least compared to today's chemical or even other nuclear designs. Jerry Pournelle, who is acquainted with the project and its ex-team leader Freeman Dyson, has been quoted as saying that a single mission could have provided us with a large permanent moon base.[citation needed] Alternatively an Orion could reach Pluto and return to Earth inside of a year. Single stage to Mars and back also seemed to be possible.[citation needed]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_test

Flight test

Flight test is a branch of aeronautical engineering that develops and gathers data during flight of an aircraft and then analyses the data to evaluate the flight characteristics of the aircraft and validate its design, including safety aspects. The flight test phase accomplishes two major tasks: 1) finding and fixing any aircraft design problems and then 2) verifying and documenting the aircraft capabilities for government certification or customer acceptance. The flight test phase can range from the test of a single new system for an existing aircraft to the complete development and certification of a new aircraft. Therefore the duration of a flight test program can vary from a few weeks to several years.

When the aircraft is completely assembled and instrumented, it typically conducts many hours of ground testing before its first/maiden flight. This ground testing will verify basic aircraft systems operations, measure engine performance, evaluate dynamic systems stability, and provide a first look at structural loads. Flight controls will also be checked out. Once all required ground tests are completed, the aircraft is ready for the first flight. First/maiden flight is a major milestone in any aircraft development program and is undertaken with the utmost caution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobraking

Aerobraking

Aerobraking is a spaceflight maneuver that reduces the high point of an elliptical orbit (apoapsis) by flying the vehicle through the atmosphere at the low point of the orbit (periapsis), using drag to slow the spacecraft. Aerobraking saves fuel, compared to the direct use of a rocket engine, when the spacecraft requires a low orbit after arriving at a body with an atmosphere.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Lunar_Module

Apollo Lunar Module

The Apollo Lunar Module was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft built for the US Apollo program by Grumman to achieve the transit from cislunar orbit to the surface and back. The module was also known as the LM from the manufacturer designation (often pronounced "lem," from NASA's early name for it, Lunar Excursion Module).

The module was designed to carry a crew of two and rested on four landing legs. It consisted of two stages—the descent stage module and the ascent stage.

The Apollo Lunar Module came into being because NASA chose to reach the moon via lunar orbit rendezvous (LOR) instead of by direct ascent or Earth orbit rendezvous (EOR). Both direct ascent and EOR would have involved the entire Apollo spacecraft landing on the moon; once the decision had been made to proceed using LOR, it became necessary to produce a separate craft capable of reaching the lunar surface.

Chad Trammel had that brown car when we were in 9th or 10th grade. I forget the model name of the car. It might have been a Comet, or that might have been a car that was very similar to his, much like the difference of Chevrolet and GMC. I can't remember that other model though. Billy Parker might have had one like it for his first car and I think his actually was the Comet. There was that night, I can still visualize it, when I talked Chad into driving his car when we were out cruising around on a weekend night in Ashdown. He let me drive it and I promptly backed it into someone's pickup.

I also wonder who Chad Trammel is supposed to represent. I thought of him again when I was opening to Lethal Weapon 2 and Riggs was jamming down the gas pedal. I did that in Chad's car back in 9th or 10th grade. I had some kind of speaker out the window, I was trying to make some kind of Mr. Microphone sort of device. I remember we recorded it all on tape. Trammel, when I saw him in '94 at our 10 year reunion, was a lawyer in the Air Force. He was telling me something about standing near B-52s at Barkesly I think it was, and the thought comes to mind, although I'm not sure from where, that he was saying something about kicking the tires. Back in '94, when I told him I was repairing ATM machines, he asked me if I ever thought about doing something else, as though he expected me to be doing more.

Well, that's screwed up. I don't think there is anything in my journal more than that about Pompeii in Italy. I so vividly recall my senior year at Ashdown High School graduating in the year 1984. Jimmi Ann Armstrong's mother, as I recall returned to teaching school and she was the teacher for my Advanced English, or whatever it was called, class, and I recall thinking sitting there in her class

So anyway, Mrs. Armstrong had us assigned to write, as best I recall now, before our graduation in 1984 about our future plans and I can distinctly recall writing about how I was already enlisted in the United States Navy and about the places I wanted to travel to. I had no interest in going to college and I suspect now factors motivating me included how I had already worked for over three years at Mills Store in Wilton Arkansas and I think now I wrote about how I was looking forward to working in the Advanced Electronics Field in the United States Navy. The recruiter didn't have to try that hard to sell me on the US Navy.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 11/25/2006 4:17 PM
That would make sense that I was playing Santa Claus for those two years at Mills Store. It would represent that I was twice involved in trying to get the Tehran POW’s back home. And there is also that symbolism I wrote of about Donald Mills being the mayor of Wilton and me having three jobs during that one summer, sometimes working all three in the same day. Donald was newly elected as the mayor of the City of Wilton and he me put in charge as the foreman of a work program for the City where we were fixing potholes in the city streets.

SAMMY HAGAR

"I Can't Drive 55"

One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no
So I tried my best illegal move
A big black and white come and crushed my groove again

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55, oh no, uh

So I signed my name on number 24, hey
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more, huh
I'm gonna throw your ass in the city joint"
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
I say "Yeah!, Oh yeah"

Write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55, oh yeah

(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive) 55, uh

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer
And I can't get my car out of second gear
What used to take two hours now takes all day
Huh, it took me 16 hours to get to L.A.

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55

No, no, no, I can't drive, (I can't drive 55)
I can't drive (I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)

Kate Burroughs: A couple of years ago, the bureau put together a task force. Lots of assets had been disappearing. So this task force was formed to find the mole who was giving them up. Our best analysts poring over data for years looking for the guy, and they could never quite find him. Guess who was put in charge of the task force? He was smarter than all of us. Actually, I can live with that part. It's the idea that my entire career has been a waste of time, that's the part I hate. Everything I've done since I got to this office, everything we've all been paid to do, he was undoing it. We all coulda just stayed home.
