I noted this earlier. I think this reflects that I was being sent to the Falklands after I graduated with from the U.S. Naval Academy with Class of 1982. I have started thinking that we graduated on April 30, 1982, which is the date of that Seattle Times news article declaring “U.S. backs Britain on Falklands.” That probably sealed the fate of the Sheffield right there. The article went on to say “Argentina stupefied” and they decided to make it personal for Reagan, although I’m not certain he was actually the one who made that decision, as it might have been someone at State to make that public declaration.

For STS-81, I followed the hunch it connected to 5/1/67. I initially looked at STS-67 for that, but I haven't made any calculations yet.
The date difference of 5/1/67 and 1/12/97, the launch date of STS-81, was 10849 days. Dividing 10849 by 2 equals 5424.5. The mid-point between those two dates is 3/7/82. That was 82 days before 5/28/82, which I think was the actual date of graduation for Class of 1982. I wonder about 5/27, though, the previous, which was a Thursday, and that would have been 81 days after the mid-point, which would make sense why the 81 in the flight number.

The flight STS-67 launched on 3/2/95. The date difference of 5/1/67 and 3/2/95 is 10167 days. Dividing 10167 by 2 equals 5083.5 days. The date difference of 5/1/67 and 3/31/81 is 5083 days. Adding 68 days to 3/31/81 is 6/7/81.

The mid-point of 3/3/59 and 7/3/92 is 11/2/75. That date 7/3/92 occurred during STS-50.
The duration of STS-50 was 13.8 days and launched on 6/25/92. Counting the days: 25,26,27,28,29,30,1,2,3 equals 9 days. Dividing 9 by 13.8 equals 0.65. That means 6/25/92, the anchor of 3/3/59 and 11/2/75 was 2/3's of the way through STS-50. I don't know why '50' though.

So if Prince Philip is my paternal grandfather, that means my grandfather was a naval officer as well. I have read that a few times but it just now registered. And from that article, it says he began his naval career on 5/1/39, where I have been thinking that I graduated USNA on 4/30/82, which was a Friday. The next day, 5/1/82, was a Saturday. I have largely discredited my methods for reaching that 4/30 date but I don't know why I am still attached to it.

I recognize the date Friday, 4/30/1982, as when I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. The date 5/1/1982 has come up before too in connection with my graduation. That might have been the day my grandfather pinned on my U.S. Navy Ensign bars for the first time. The commissioning of the battleship USS New Jersey also seems associated with me and my graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. The symbolism of this movie, though, might have something to do with me and Tri-Star Pictures, which formed in 1982 and I assume that is relevant to me.

I can't remember the precise details, but I think 4/30/1982 was my final day at USNA and my family had a commission ceremony for me on 5/1/1982, before I left for the Falklands as some kind of observer, NATO perhaps, with the Royal Navy. The date 5/1/1982 shows up in the final re-commissioning of the USS New Jersey BB-62, also, which would make sense, especially considering that New Jersey was the first of those battleships to be brought back into service, even though it was the second ship of that Iowa-class of battleships. I believe that was done because I first graduated from Princeton University, which is located in New Jersey.

I have been writing that I started Princeton University on 9/2/65.
The first manned Skylab flight, Skylab 2, launched 5/25/73.
The date difference of 9/2/65 and 5/25/73 is 2823 days.
Dividing 2823 by 2 is 1411.5.
The date difference of 9/2/65 and 7/16/69 is 1413 days. That means of the period between when I think I stared Princeton University and when I think I launched with Skylab 2, the Apollo 11 was almost precisely at the mid-point of those dates.

The variations I use in my work are based on my true birthdate, where I recognize 2 dates because I have dual citizenship in the U.S. and the U.K. I was born in Hawaii on 3/3/1959 but the date was already 3/4/1959 in London. I incorporate that detail into my work by using variations of 3/3/1959 and 3/4/1959, which includes the value '334' and '33-34' among other logical variations. I also use the sequence '333' to identify certain work I created.
There following are examples of my work that associates my personal experiences with the dates 6/19/1968, 4/10/1972, 5/1/1973, 6/7/1976, 4/30/1982 & 5/1/1982, as well as other dates. The association is primarily in the form of connecting those dates to my birthdate of 3/3/1959 & 3/4/1959, as well to my wife's 7/16/1963 birthdate. My work also represents that my wife and I were arranged for marriage, possibly before I was born, and that we would at least have an equal partnership in the work I created. My later work represents that my wife and I have been in love for a long time and have a happy relationship, in spite of the effort of organized crime to disrupt our lives and steal our family business.
Phoebe and I had a formal wedding ceremony on 7/21/1987, although our marriage was established years before that. Roberts FFG-58 was precisely 333 days later and also probably because I was onboard that ship as well, having recovered from wounds in combat and returned to duty as a U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant. The USS Wainwright CG-28 was aggressively attacked on 4/18/1988 and that was also probably because I was onboard the Wainwright. The HMS Sheffield D80 was attacked during the Falklands War, which I assume I was also the target of the attack and that I had been deployed to the Falklands with the Royal Navy as an observer for the U.S.
I recognize the date 5/9/1965 as when I first flew a helicopter and 5/1/1967 as when I first flew a jet aircraft by myself and I encoded those dates into my work. I recognize the date 9/2/1965 as my first day at Princeton University and 5/1/1973 as my graduation date from University of Oxford. The dates 4/30/1982 and 5/1/1982 are associated with my graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, although I had already served for many years as a commissioned U.S. Navy officer and CIA officer and my attendance at the Academy was an effort to establish a new covert identity and I maintained a higher level of seniority in the U.S. intelligence community than my U.S. Navy rank suggested. A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn’t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.

I have been pondering several details from that news article about the recent space shuttle launch and I find myself pondering that possibility that Nancy Reagan was standing next to my wife Phoebe during the 4/12/1981 launch that I was onboard as the commander. She explained that her husband, Ronnie, could not be there because he was still recovering from the gun shot wound the month before. I found myself thinking further that my wife Phoebe commented that Nancy was squeezing her arm so tightly as the countdown clock approached zero that she was cutting off circulation in her arm. One association I ponder over that as well is from the ending of "Apollo 13" where Jim Lovell's son comments that his mother is squeezing him too tightly as they are waiting to find out of the Apollo 13 capsule made it through re-entry. Nancy might have commented to my wife Phoebe that she has been at every space rocket launch since the Gemini program. She also might have talked about Buzz Aldrin and commented to Phoebe that he and I are a lot alike. Nancy explained earlier that she and Ronnie knew me, Phoebe's Tom, because I had been assigned to the White House on some kind of duty assignment associated with my midshipman activities. That also served to explain why she and President Reagan were at the ceremony we had on 5/1/1982 associated with my graduation from the Academy.

NASA Invites Media to Meet New Astronaut Candidates
Eight astronaut candidates who arrived at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston this week to begin training will participate in a news conference with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden at 10 a.m. CDT (11 a.m. EDT) Tuesday, Aug. 20.
The news conference will be a rare opportunity for journalists to speak with the candidates, as they will be unavailable for media interviews while they focus on training for the next two years.
During the event, news media representatives also will be able to interview NASA officials involved in astronaut selection and training, and visit the training facilities at Johnson.
The astronaut candidates are Josh A. Cassada and Victor J. Glover, both lieutenant commanders in the U.S. Navy; Tyler N. "Nick" Hague, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force; Christina M. Hammock; Nicole Aunapu Mann, a major in the U.S. Marine Corps; Anne C. McClain and Andrew R. Morgan, both majors in the U.S. Army; and Jessica U. Meir.
The candidates were selected come from the second largest pool of applicants NASA has ever received -- more than 6,000.
During the next two years, the group will participate in a variety of technical training activities at space centers and remote locations around the globe to prepare for missions that will help the agency push the boundaries of exploration and travel to new destinations in the solar system.
To attend the event, media representatives must call the Johnson newsroom at 281-483-5111 by 2 p.m. CDT Monday, Aug. 19.
Reporters and NASA social media followers may submit questions to the candidates on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ in advance using the hashtag #askNASA. NASA will open a thread on its Facebook page where questions may also be posted. The event will air live on NASA Television and the NASA website.

Dr. Ellen Baker drew blood from Thagard, a physician, and his two Russian crew mates and performed physical exams to help scientists understand the effects on the body of long stays in space. Thagard spent 3 1/2 months aboard the space station Mir, a U.S. space endurance record.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Russian space agency tested the communication systems on Atlantis, Mir and the Soyuz capsule attached to Mir on Sunday in preparation for the undocking Tuesday.
Thagard, who turns 52 today, said that while he is looking forward to leaving Mir, it has been a memorable four months.
"I joked with these guys . . . you call for a taxi and wait forever," he said. "But the fact is, [Thursday's docking] was an emotional experience, one of the highest, I guess, of my life. I'm awfully glad to be here, and I'm really looking forward to seeing my family."

This isn't what I was thinking of when I was several days ago planning my excursion to Riverfront in downtown Spokane.
But in my futile search today trying again to remember my original plans I read through this again in my journal and began to wonder what the code pattern would reveal.
What I wrote here in my massive journal was about the farthest from my mind when I started off for downtown and my primary objective that day.
If my original plan had not faded uncharacteristically from my conscious mind then I would not have thought of this today because I wouldn't have been searching for the details I planned originally.

Did I jump back in the past to 3/3/2003 for a landing at Burke Lake near the town of George in Washington State?
That would make sense as I think about it more. That date 3/3/2003 is also the premiere of the film "Tears of the Sun." That would also make sense that details could be incorporated into that tangible medium of intellectual property for the simple fact that since people who knew I was going to time travel knew precisely where to meet me on that date 3/3/2003.
In the context of my natural-time self I drove out there to that area in the year 2005. I wrote afterward in my journal about that excursion and of how you never knew you were about to go over a cliff until you were at the edge.

DISEASES of the heart, blood vessels, blood, and lungs are among the major causes of death and disability in America. They are among the most feared diseases in our country. Their cost in human suffering is intolerable, and they also result in extensive economic losses---in terms both of medical care costs and of lost wages.
In my State of the Union Message this year, I indicated that this Administration would give increased attention to the fight against diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs. I also stated my intention, which I reaffirmed in my message to the Congress on health care of March 2, to form a panel of distinguished experts to help determine how best to combat these diseases. I have appointed a group of distinguished citizens to serve on this panel, and, in addition, I have made a budget request of more than $250 million for 1973 to support the fight against these diseases.
Today I welcome the opportunity to strengthen the attack on heart, blood vessel, and lung diseases by signing S. 3323, the National Heart, Blood Vessel, Lung, and Blood Act of 1972.
Substantial progress has already been achieved in our battle against this enemy, much of it under the auspices of the National Heart and Lung Institute, which has been charged with the responsibility for developing an intensified program. I am confident that with the added impetus of this new legislation, our Nation's scientists will continue that progress and hasten the day when the threat of this devastating health menace will be significantly diminished.

A few days ago I decided to make another excursion to downtown Spokane.
I was thinking a few days ago as I planned about a note I made in my journal years ago.
I was going to go over there to Riverfront to capture some images and then check the calendar date numbers when I got back.
The anticipated calendar date with snowfall made the selection seem more random.
Just cannot now recall that journal note of mine that got me thinking of that plan.

Friday’s wintery weather broke the daily record for maximum snowfall, according to National Weather Service of Spokane.
7.1 inches fell Friday, as measured at the Spokane International Airport, crushing the record of 4.8 inches set on the same date in 1963.
The record for heaviest snowfall on any single day in Spokane still stands at 19.4, which fell during a 24-hour period ending at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008. Coeur d’Alene set a daily record during the same storm, clocking 25 inches. Services were stalled and much of the city shut down, according to a Spokesman-Review article written at the time.
Roads remained slick Saturday, with multiple sliding accidents reported around the city. Public safety officials repeated their request motorists to drive with care.
The city announced in a news release Saturday that it is continuing with its full-city plow, with snow removal crews working around the clock to clear every street and roadway. Barring new snowfall, the process should take about three days, according to the release.

I've started thinking that "The Wall" album from 1979 represents, at least partially, my encounter with the life forms on Callisto. It is consistent with something I was writing about the other day about those life forms but now cannot remember what I actually wrote. All I can see is just a mental image that I associate with those comments that I cannot even begin to explain. I think a lot about it though and I had new thoughts about it today when I was walking outside.

Michael Phillip Anderson (December 25, 1959 – February 1, 2003) was a United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut. Anderson and his six fellow crew members were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the craft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Anderson served as the payload commander and lieutenant colonel in charge of science experiments on the Columbia.
Early life and education
Anderson was born in 1959 to Barbara Anderson and Bobbie Anderson, who serviced jets on Plattsburgh Air Force Base near Plattsburgh, New York. Bobbie Anderson was transferred to Fairchild Air Force Base, about 12 miles away from Spokane, Washington, which Anderson spoke of as his hometown.
Air Force Career
In 1986, he was selected to attend Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Upon graduation he was assigned to the 2d Airborne Command and Control Squadron, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska as an EC-135 pilot
Anderson had logged more than 3,000 hours of flight time when NASA selected him for astronaut training in December 1994.

Nuclear weapons are different.
If a nuclear weapon exploded in a major city, the blast center would be hotter than the surface of the sun; tornado-strength winds would spread the flames; and a million or more people could die. Survivors would have no electricity, phones and hospitals would be overwhelmed…if they were still standing.
The opportunities for catastrophe are wide and terrifying with more than 16,000 nuclear weapons in the world today. The possibility of an accidental, mistaken or unauthorized launch is real. The scenarios below show how close we've come.
More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia still keep nearly 2,000 nuclear weapons ready for immediate launch against each other. This dangerous "prompt-launch status" means leaders in a crisis would have just minutes to check facts and decide whether to use nuclear weapons. Command and control systems are not perfect. People make mistakes. Sabotage can happen. Technology has flaws and systems fail.
A nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia could end human life on earth—and could be triggered by a false warning planted by a cyber-terrorist. We know that terrorists are seeking nuclear weapons themselves.
Seven more countries—in addition to the U.S. and Russia—have nuclear weapons: India, Pakistan, China, France, the United Kingdom, Israel and North Korea. Any one of these countries could be the cause of a catastrophe.

On August 29, 2007, at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, 12 cruise missiles were scheduled to be flown to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana to be decommissioned. Instead, six cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads were strapped onto one of the wings of a B-52 bomber not certified to carry nuclear weapons. The nuclear missiles were flown by pilots who did not know they were carrying nuclear weapons to an airbase that did not know they were coming. Once in Louisiana, the weapons sat on the tarmac overnight unguarded. By the time the mistake was discovered by a maintenance crew, the six thermonuclear weapons had been missing for a day and a half and no one in the U.S. Air Force noticed. A former head of the nation’s strategic command said: “I have been in the nuclear business since 1966 and am not aware of any incident more disturbing.”

Marine Lieutenant Steve Landers has perfected a new bomb-release for airplanes which he is testing with the aid of his mechanics,'Singapore' Stebbins and Jack Murray. Dick Weber, one of a group of enemy agents attempting to steal the plans, is a friend of Colonel Dale, whose daughter, Linda, is engaged to Landers. Beckstrom , head of the spy ring, has some of his agents dress as Marines and obtain entry the the hangar. Every time I watch this on television that woman who sits next to his driver reminds me of a photo Phoebe Bailey sent me after we met at summer camp back in Arkansas in 1981 the summer after 9th grade.

As I recall, Phoebe Bailey wrote in a letter to me to “never forget that dance where we met because I never will.” That is quite humorous, really more humorous than I can articulate
I have these moments where I want to scream because there is something locked in my mind that I can’t articulate.
There is truly a “great lakes” of emotion stored in my mind associated with so much that is forgotten. I feel this great humor in my mind about that comment from Phoebe, I feel that if I remember, I will laugh and laugh and laugh, for days on end probably.

1980. That was the year we moved from DeQueen to Ashdown. I think it was '81 when we moved onto Hicks Road. I started school at Ashdown Jr. High in '80. We had our 10 year reunion in '94 at the junior high school. I was teaching myself how to read Russian that year. Received a Science award.
Went to Camp Couchdale in the summer of '81, after graduating 9th grade.
Met a girl named Phoebe, took her out on the lake in a boat and paddled around. We wrote letters for a long time afterwards.

She definitely lived in Arlington Heights and I know that because after we started dating I traveled to their condo several times while I was attending the United States Navy Fire Controlman "A" school near North Chicago in Great Lakes Illinois.
I "remember" one time, and that much have been my 2 November 1986 birthday because I never went back there after I left soon after in November 1986 for thirty days leave in Arkansas, she and her mother presented a birthday cake to me at their condo in Arlington Heights.

I just caught the association. Her birthday was 2 September 1965. I always remember that because it was exactly two months before my birthdate.
I don't recall the name of the bar but I remember it was a popular place and it was a fairly long drive from the US Navy base in North Chicago to that dance club in Wisconsin. There were a lot of women in that bar that night. I walked up and asked her to dance and we dated for a long time after that. I was thinking of a her again recently when I watched the 1986 film "Short Circuit" on television.
She was from Arlington Heights. I stayed there several times in that condo in Arlington Heights.

WEIR (on the TV): Simon, if you're watching this, it means the President has been kind enough to grant you security clearance. (We see a man, obviously Simon, sitting in the living room of the house and watching the video.) I'm not going on a diplomatic mission to another country. I'm going to another planet in another galaxy by means of a device called the Stargate. Millions of years ago there was a race of beings we call the Ancients.
(As Weir continues to speak, we see various members of the expedition as they spend their last day on Earth. Lieutenant Ford is kissed goodbye by his grandmother, and she and his grandfather make a big fuss of him as he gets into a taxi.)
WEIR: They created a network of these Stargates throughout our galaxy in order to travel freely among their worlds.

When I was having those series of thoughts about Christmas at Phoebe's mother's house, possibly in 1979, I was thinking that her maternal grandmother was there also and that was the first time I had met her. There were other members of her family there too that I met for the first time.
I was also thinking that Phoebe's mother observed that I was gone during the first shuttle launch and then I turned up injured. No one connected my injuries to the shuttle launch though because I had made up a cover story about being in survival training, as part of my Midshipman training, at the time. She did wonder about why I was gone during the strike on Iraq though and I was listening to see what she would guess about that. I wanted to see if the people closest to me would figure out what I was up to in my covert activities so I could create effective cover stories to keep them from knowing about my activities with the U.S. military.

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.
I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

The one that caught my attention is listed below, along with the caption on the photo. Can you confirm that the cruiser in the background is actually the Jouett?. I magnified the image and I am quite certain the number on the hull is a '28' and not a '29.' There is a little shadow on the second number that indicates to me that it has the closed lower loop of an eight and a nine wouldn't have that shadow. Or more properly, it is the painted on shadow that produces the effect of raised numbers.
I was on the Wainwright during the 1988 Persian Gulf deployment as an FC2 and I thought this might be a good artifact to add to the Wainwright Veteran Association.

I spent 18 hours onboard the Samuel B. Roberts photographing the damage and video taping interviews and I was trying to catch a ride on any ship in the area going back to Bahrain. I did hear the The USS Wainwright was in the area but not going my way.
That photo was taken the morning after and I was burning off the last shots in the camera before a helicopter flight out.

One of the six men believed to have been part of the iconic moment when an American flag was hoisted at Iwo Jima was misidentified, the Marine Corps confirmed.
An investigative panel led by a retired general reviewed claims that one of the men was not Navy corpsman John Bradley, and concluded that he was actually a Marine who was there that day: Pfc. Harold Schultz of Detroit.
"Our history is important to us, and we have a responsibility to ensure it's right," Marine Corps' commandant Gen. Robert Neller said in a statement Thursday.
The black and white photo was taken on Feb. 23, 1945, by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal atop Mount Suribachi. At the time, Marines were helping to capture the tiny Pacific island in a bloody battle against the Japanese during World War II.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt later asked that all of the men in the picture be identified — a difficult task because their faces were turned or obscured.
Before this most recent investigation that began in late April, one conducted in 1946 found that a person thought to have been part of the flag-raising was actually someone else: Marine Cpl. Harlon Block.

With the correct identification of Schultz, it's now clear that all who took part in the historic moment were Marines. The four remaining men have already been identified as Pfc. Rene Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Pfc. Franklin Sousley and Sgt. Michael Strank.
There were actually two flag-raisings that took place that day, and Bradley had been in the first one — not the second hoisting that is depicted in the now-famous photo.
Bradley's son, James, wrote about his father's experience in the best-selling book "Flags of Our Fathers" — later turned into a movie by Clint Eastwood. But with the military investigation in full swing, James Bradley, said last month that he no longer believed his father, who died in 1994 at age 70, was in the photo.
The military investigation was only opened after producers with a Smithsonian Channel documentary, the upcoming "The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima," approached them about the true identities of the people involved.
The producers had used an independent forensics expert to help determine that Bradley was in fact Schultz, a mail sorter who died in 1995 at age 70.
Schultz's stepdaughter, Dezreen MacDowell, told The New York Times that he had once quietly claimed in the 1990s to have been an Iwo Jima flag-raiser, but otherwise never spoke of it.
"My mom was distracted and not listening and Harold said, 'I was one of the flag raisers,'" MacDowell recalled. "I said, 'My gosh, Harold, you're a hero.' He said, 'No, I was a Marine.'"
The Marines said it will correct the record to reflect Schultz's name — giving him his due. Still, the spirit of what the men did that day for their country is what's important, Neller said.
"Simply stated, our fighting spirit is captured in that frame, and it remains a symbol of the tremendous accomplishments of our Corps — what they did together and what they represent remains most important," he added. "That doesn't change."

I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

I wonder if that's the same day I remember graduating from United States Navy basic training in Orlando.
Must have been.
The uncertainty in my mind is because of vague memories I still have about those last days before we left.
I can still visualize that last day, had my seabag and sunglasses on and the company commander sending us off and I can visualize myself walking for the last time out the door of that barracks we had been in for 8 weeks.
I went across base to begin Basic Electricity and Electronics School for the Electronics Technician occupation rating, a rating I chose because it was one of only two ratings in the Advanced Electronics Field, along with Fire Controlman, and the ET rating required several more weeks of electronics training than FC and I found that appealing to me. Several weeks later, being completely unprepared for unhindered access to cheap alcohol, having been sheltered from alcohol and then on my own with no old woman screeching at me, with no closed door in her house I could ever escape to away from her, I let myself get kicked out of school and sent out to the fleet to work in the deck department as a non-rated sailor. Working my butt off, as since 14 years old, from my own personal initiative and with no personal role models in my past experience, I had become accustomed to regular employment, I was allowed to select a rating to aspire for and I chose the gun/missile Fire Controlman (FC) (in the last days of the Fire Control Technician Missiles (FTM) rating) and worked my way back up and my next fleet assignment was with a bunch of push-button technicians whose career track had been the same as my original aspirations with the ET rating. They went to school for several courses of instruction and were advanced to Petty Officer Third Class (E-4 paygrade after entering recruit training as E-3 paygrade) without ever working a day in the fleet. I had spent over a year - a total of 419 days to be exact - on a shakedown period for the USS Taylor FFG-50 where I had many responsibilities including being responsible for the boatswain locker, helmsman, lookout, repair locker personnel, damage control, others.
All I know for certain is my official military records tell me I was transferred from basic training by the United States Navy on Monday, July 16, 1984.
The previous Friday was the 13th.
The details I vaguely recall are about how my company, C155, finished the course of instruction several days before the other company's finished. The reason, I vaguely recall, is that several companies began the course of instruction during the same week but on different days of the week. So we started on a day before the others started and we finished a few days before the last company finished. If we started on a Monday then others started on Friday. So we finished on a Monday and they finished on a Friday. But we all graduated on the same day, which I believe was a Friday and I have reason to believe was the 13th. I can't imagine we were goofing off for over a week waiting for the other company to finish the course. K076 was the female company I remember starting with us on the same day and I think they were in the same large classroom with us for classroom instruction. I remember a vast number of sailors being on the field for graduation ceremony and my company was a large group of sailors.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on Tuesday formally welcomed the eight newest candidates to the astronaut corps and unveiled a space exploration roadmap that makes clear the global community is working together on a unified deep space exploration strategic plan, with robotic and human missions to destinations that include near-Earth asteroids, the moon and Mars.
At NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, the members of the 2013 astronaut class spoke with reporters about their new roles and their desire to help the agency push the boundaries of exploration and travel to new destinations in the solar system. These next-generation American astronauts will be among those who will have the opportunity to fly on new commercial space transportation systems that are now under development. They also will be among those to plan and perhaps carry out the first-ever human missions to an asteroid and Mars.
"This class joins a distinguished and elite group of Americans who have carried out historic missions to the moon, deployed space telescopes and built an orbiting laboratory the size of a football field, where U.S. astronauts have continuously lived, worked and conducted research for more than a dozen years now," said Bolden. "They are being asked to carry on this extraordinary legacy and ensure the United States remains the world's leader in exploration and scientific discovery -- carrying with them America's hopes, dreams and curiosity deep into space, first to an asteroid and one day on to Mars."
The 2013 astronaut candidate class comes from a pool of 6,000 applicants, the second largest in NASA history. Half of the selectees are women, making this the highest percentage of female astronaut candidates ever selected for a single class. The group will participate in extensive technical training at space centers and remote locations around the world to prepare for missions beyond low-Earth orbit.
Bolden also spoke about the updated Global Exploration Roadmap (GER), released publicly Tuesday. The roadmap reflects the work of 12 space agencies of the International Space Exploration Coordination Group. It highlights the international space community's shared interest in pursuing deep space exploration and reflects the degree of international cooperation on a unified deep space exploration strategic roadmap.
The shared global vision, as laid out in the GER, includes:
-- an examination of the critical part the International Space Station plays in deep space exploration;
-- robotic and human missions to destinations that include near-Earth asteroids, the moon and Mars;
-- validation of the vital role of NASA's asteroid mission in advancing the capabilities needed to explore Mars and the economic and societal value such exploration can bring; and
-- a conceptual scenario that demonstrates how missions in the lunar vicinity, including NASA's asteroid initiative, pave the way for international missions to Mars in the 2030s, while enabling important discoveries along the way.

Space shuttle junkies, unite!
That's the battle cry of Richard Horrmann, who is producing a monthly video magazine, ShuttleVision, dedicated to information about the space program. Each 60-minute video, made up of newsy featurettes, costs subscribers $18. ShuttleVision is available only by mail order, in VHS and in PAL, the European tape format.
Are there enough space shuttle enthusiasts out there to justify a video magazine?
Horrmann is betting there are. So far his subscriber list is less than 1,000--not enough to cover his $15,000-$20,000 production costs each month--but he believes the venture is growing.
"There are people who love the space shuttle program and want to see everything about it," he explained. "To some people, one launch is the same as another. But people who follow the space program know each launch is unique and each mission is special in some way. So the magazine focuses on events related to launches that month or in the previous couple of weeks."
The reason his video magazine is necessary, Horrmann explained, is because of the limited media coverage of the space program. "Since the Challenger disaster, the primary media attention the program gets is when there's bad news," he said. "There's so much going on--about NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), various programs and the people and companies involved--that doesn't get coverage."
Horrmann said that NASA, which is cooperating in his enterprise, has scheduled seven flights this year. Two have been completed--one in January and one at the end of March. Space shuttle watchers, he added, are gearing up for Monday's scheduled maiden voyage of the new space shuttle Endeavor, which was built to replace Challenger.
