Now I am remembering that time, I remember it clearly, when I was in the Charlotte lab with a customer, it was September 2001, right around the time Star Trek: Enterprise debuted. He asked me something about processor affinity and I said that I thought it was possible, but on further research, I told him I must have dreamed it. He looked like that was funny.

I also felt annoyed around that time, and I think another coworker was thinking the same thing, about the people that were selected to attend the Professional Developers Conference in L.A. My suspicion was that we were getting to go because the higher-leveled people didn't want to travel because they were scared. Anyway, I took note that Enterprise started off in Broken Bow, OK, a location I knew well.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: July 16, 2006

I have wondered often about something said to me after the 9/11 attacks. It was that time in September 2001 when I was with Cognos in the Microsoft office in Charlotte. One of the Cognos employees said something to me about how I was the one person she wanted to be around during that time. We talked a little about what to do if hijackers took over an airplane as we were planning to fly back to our respective cities. People were saying things like that because they knew who I really was. I didn't understand why she was so confident in being around me though. I felt confident in myself, but I'm not Superman.

The American Presidency Project

RONALD REAGAN

40th President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Statement on Signing a Bill Amending the Social Security Disability Insurance System

January 12, 1983

I am today signing H.R. 7093. This bill enhances the quality and fairness of the social security disability insurance system. It also helps us to maintain the integrity of the disability rolls while protecting the legitimate rights of both beneficiaries and contributors.

When this administration took office, reports by the General Accounting Office and others indicated that thousands of people who were not disabled were drawing social security disability benefits. Several billion dollars a year were being spent to support people who were not, in fact, disabled. The previous administration and the 96th Congress had agreed that the Department of Health and Human Services should correct this situation by implementing measures passed by the Congress in 1980. These measures provided for reviewing the status of those receiving social security disability benefits.

Over the past year and a half, the Department of Health and Human Services has improved the administrative processes for determining who should receive disability benefits. To help beneficiaries understand the review process, the Department now begins each continuing disability investigation with an interview in local offices.

With the signing of this bill today, I am pleased to add some useful statutory changes to the administrative initiatives that have already been taken. H.R. 7093 requires a face-to-face hearing as the first step in the appeals process. Such a hearing gives the individual a personal opportunity to present all of the evidence concerning his or her disability. This should make the process more fair for beneficiaries and provide an additional source of information for those responsible for administering the program. As an added safety measure and to avoid financial hardship for those whose benefits may be mistakenly terminated, this bill permits the continued payment of disability benefits during the appeals process.

H.R 7093 represents a welcome step by the Congress towards improving the disability appeals process.

In addition, this bill reduces from 30 percent to 10 percent the rate of Virgin Islands tax imposed on certain payments of Virgin Islands source income to U.S. corporations, citizens, and resident aliens. The lowering of the tax rate will significantly encourage U.S. investment in the Virgin Islands and will give the Virgin Islands parity with Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Note: As enacted, H.R. 7093 is Public Law 97-455, approved January 12.

(from internet transcript)

[Starfleet Medical - observation room]

WILLIAMS: Who was chasing him?

SOVAL: We don't know. They were incinerated in the methane explosion, and the farmer's description was vague at best.

LEONARD: How did they get here? What kind of ship?

TOS: They were using some kind of stealth technology. We're still analyzing our sensor logs.

WILLIAMS: I'd like to see those logs.

SOVAL: The Klingons made it very clear they want us to expedite this.

LEONARD: It happened on our soil.

TOS: That's irrelevant.

FORREST: Ambassador, with all due respect, we have a right to know what's going on here.

SOVAL: You will be apprised of all pertinent information.

WILLIAMS: And just who gets to decide what's pertinent information?

ARCHER: Admiral.

FORREST: Jon. I think you know everyone.

ARCHER: Not everyone.

LEONARD: It's a Klingot.

TOS: A Klingon.

ARCHER: Where'd he come from? (they're viewing through window)

WILLIAMS: Oklahoma.

FORREST: A corn farmer named Moore shot him with a plasma rifle. Says it was self-defense.

TOS: Fortunately, Soval and I have maintained close contact with Kronos since the incident occurred.

ARCHER: Kronos?

LEONARD: It's the Klingon's homeworld.

FORREST: This gentleman is some sort of a courier. Evidently he was carrying crucial information back to his people.

SOVAL: When he was nearly killed by your "farmer."

FORREST: Ambassador Soval thinks it would be best if we push off your launch until we've cleared this up.

ARCHER: Well, isn't that a surprise. You'd think they'd have come up with something a little more imaginative this time.

SOVAL: Sarcasm aside, Captain, the last thing your people need is to make an enemy of the Klingon Empire.

TOS: If we hadn't convinced them to let us take Klaang's corpse back to Kronos, Earth would most likely be facing a squadron of Warbirds by the end of the week.

ARCHER: Corpse? Is he dead?

[Intensive Care Unit]

ARCHER: Excuse me, is that man dead?

RONALD REAGAN

40th President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Proclamation 5013—National Inventors' Day, 1983

January 12, 1983

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Almost two hundred years ago, President George Washington recognized that invention and innovation were fundamental to the welfare and strength of the United States. He successfully urged the First Congress to enact a patent statute as expressly authorized by the U.S. Constitution and wisely advised that "there is nothing which can better deserve your patronage than the promotion of science . . ." In 1790, the first patent statute initiated the transformation of the United States from an importer of technology to a world leader in technological innovation.

Today, just as in George Washington's day, inventors are the keystone of the technological progress that is so vital to the economic, environmental, and social well-being of this country. Individual ingenuity and perseverance, spurred by the incentives of the patent system, begin the process that results in improved standards of living, increased public and private productivity, creation of new industries, improved public services, and enhanced competitiveness of American products in world markets.

In recognition of the enormous contribution inventors make to the nation and the world, the Congress, pursuant to Senate Joint Resolution 140 (Public Law 97-198), has designated February 11, 1983, the anniversary of the birth of Thomas Alva Edison, one of America's most famous and prolific inventors, as National Inventors' Day. Such recognition is especially appropriate at a time when our country is striving to maintain its global position as a leader in innovation and technology. Key to our future success will be the dedication and creativity of inventors.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim February 11, 1983, as National Inventors' Day and call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of Jan., in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and seventh.

World Council of Churches commemorates date of founding in Amsterdam 60 years ago

Ecumenical News International

Church leaders around the world have continued their celebrations of the founding of the World Council of Churches 60 years ago in Amsterdam on August 23, 1948, when the grouping officially came together to forge greater Christian unity.

"Stating that in seeking Christ they found each other, the 147 churches that 60 years ago came together in Amsterdam, Netherlands committed themselves afresh to Christ and covenanted with one another," said the WCC's general secretary, the Rev. Samuel Kobia

World Council of Churches

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a worldwide inter-church organization founded in 1948. Its members today include the Assyrian Church of the East, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, most jurisdictions of the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Old Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, most mainline Protestant churches (such as the Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, Moravian and Reformed) and some evangelical Protestant churches (such as the Baptist and Pentecostal). Notably, the Catholic Church is not a member, although it sends accredited observers to meetings. The WCC arose out of the ecumenical movement and has as its basis the following statement:

The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Savior according to the scriptures, and therefore seek to fulfill together their common calling to the glory of the one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It is a community of churches on the way to visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship, expressed in worship and in common life in Christ. It seeks to advance towards this unity, as Jesus prayed for his followers, "so that the world may believe." (John 17:21)

CHAPTER 83

Jonah Historically Regarded

Reference was made to the historical story of Jonah and the whale in the preceding chapter. Now some Nantucketers rather distrust this historical story of Jonah and the whale. But then there were some sceptical Greeks and Romans, who, standing out from the orthodox pagans of their times, equally doubted the story of Hercules and the whale, and Arion and the dolphin; and yet their doubting those traditions did not make those traditions one whit the less facts, for all that.

One old Sag-Harbor whaleman's chief reason for questioning the Hebrew story was this:- He had one of those quaint old-fashioned Bibles, embellished with curious, unscientific plates; one of which represented Jonah's whale with two spouts in his head- a peculiarity only true with respect to a species of the Leviathan (the Right Whale, and the varieties of that order), concerning which the fishermen have this saying, "A penny roll would choke him"; his swallow is so very small. But, to this, Bishop Jebb's anticipative answer is ready. It is not necessary, hints the Bishop, that we consider Jonah as tombed in the whale's belly, but as temporarily lodged in some part of his mouth. And this seems reasonable enough in the good Bishop. For truly, the Right Whale's mouth would accommodate a couple of whist-tables, and comfortably seat all the players. Possibly, too, Jonah might have ensconced himself in a hollow tooth; but, on second thoughts, the Right Whale is toothless.

Another reason which Sag-Harbor (he went by that name) urged for his want of faith in this matter of the prophet, was something obscurely in reference to his incarcerated body and the whale's gastric juices. But this objection likewise falls to the ground, because a German exegetist supposes that Jonah must have taken refuge in the floating body of a dead whale- even as the French soldiers in the Russian campaign turned their dead horses into tents, and crawled into them. Besides, it has been divined by other continental commentators, that when Jonah was thrown overboard from the Joppa ship, he straightway effected his escape to another vessel near by, some vessel with a whale for a figure-head; and, I would add, possibly called "The Whale," as some craft are nowadays christened the "Shark," the "Gull," the "Eagle." Nor have there been wanting learned exegetists who have opined that the whale mentioned in the book of Jonah merely meant a life-preserver- an inflated bag of wind- which the endangered prophet swam to, and so was saved from a watery doom. Poor Sag-Harbor, therefore, seems worsted all round. But he had still another reason for his want of faith. It was this, if I remember right: Jonah was swallowed by the whale in the Mediterranean Sea, and after three days' he was vomited up somewhere within three days' journey of Nineveh, a city on the Tigris, very much more than three days' journey across from the nearest point of the Mediterranean coast. How is that?

But was there no other way for the whale to land the prophet within that short distance of Nineveh? Yes. He might have carried him round by the way of the Cape of Good Hope. But not to speak of the passage through the whole length of the Mediterranean, and another passage up the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, such a supposition would involve the complete circumnavigation of all Africa in three days, not to speak of the Tigris waters, near the site of Nineveh, being too shallow for any whale to swim in. Besides, this idea of Jonah's weathering the Cape of Good Hope at so early a day would wrest the honor of the discovery of that great headland from Bartholomew Diaz, its reputed discoverer, and so make modern history a liar.

But all these foolish arguments of old Sag-Harbor only evinced his foolish pride of reason- a thing still more reprehensible in him, seeing that he had but little learning except what he had picked up from the sun and the sea. I say it only shows his foolish, impious pride, and abominable, devilish rebellion against the reverend clergy. For by a Portuguese Catholic priest, this very idea of Jonah's going to Nineveh via the Cape of Good Hope was advanced as a signal magnification of the general miracle. And so it was. Besides, to this day, the highly enlightened Turks devoutly believe in the historical story of Jonah.

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

RIKER: Doctor, tomorrow morning when they detect the warp signature from your ship and realise that humans have discovered how to travel faster than light, they decide to alter their course and make first contact with Earth, right here.

COCHRANE: Here?

LAFORGE: Uh, actually over there.

RIKER: It is one of the pivotal moments in human history, Doctor. You get to make first contact with an alien race, and after you do, everything begins to change.

LAFORGE: Your theories on warp drive allow fleets of starships to be built and mankind to start exploring the Galaxy.

TROI: It unites humanity in a way no one ever thought possible when they realise they're not alone in the universe. Poverty, disease, war. They'll all be gone within the next fifty years.

RIKER: But unless you make that warp flight tomorrow morning before eleven fifteen, none of it will happen.

COCHRANE: And you people, you're all astronauts, ... on some kind of star trek?

Key NASA Mission: Get Along in Space

Science: Beyond the technical problems, the languages and customs of 16 nations need to be reconciled for the continuing operation in isolation above Earth.

November 02, 2000 USHA LEE McFARLING TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

They'll probably get along, the two seasoned cosmonauts and the American commander scheduled to dock with the International Space Station early this morning. After all, project delays have given the crew nearly five years to chip away at the linguistic and cultural obstacles that could derail their extended mission.

But will other U.S./Russian crews do as well? And what of future polyglot crews that contain, for example, Japanese and Brazilian astronauts?

"Making it work is not a technical challenge," said John Logsdon, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University. "The real challenges are the international nature of the crews and the ground systems."

At 1:24 a.m., the Russian Soyuz capsule was scheduled to dock with the space station about 220 miles above the Earth. In preparation, Russian ground controllers undocked a trash-filled Russian freight vehicle from the station by remote control and crashed it into the South Pacific near Fiji.

Aboard the capsule, cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko was to fire Soyuz engines and guide the capsule into a flyaround of the station in preparation for docking. "We're having a pretty good day in orbit," Bill Shepherd, the U.S. commander of the four-month mission to the station, said earlier.

So far, the current mission has gone smoothly. But if Americans learned anything from their sometimes prickly experience with Russia in joint missions on the shuttle and on space station Mir, it was that cooperation with a former Cold War enemy could be difficult.

Melding the goals, finances and egos of the 16 nations that are partners for the building and operating of the space station for the next 15 years could be harder still. There are sure to be new cultural issues in space that even seasoned NASA planners can't predict.

An example? A Saudi prince who rode aboard shuttle Discovery in 1985 had no idea how to point toward Mecca from space and was uncertain how often he should pray, with the sun rising and setting every 45 minutes. (After consulting religious authorities, Mission Control decided pointing toward Earth and praying at sunrise and sunset Houston time was fine.)

Chapter 2 : Fear and Superstition

The early seventeenth century, when the witch hunts were at their height, was dominated by fear and superstition. In an increasingly unstable and volatile society, people clung ever more tightly to their deeply-held superstitions – even those who claimed to have embraced the reformed religion. The Kingdom of Darkness was as real to them as the Kingdom of Heaven, and ordinary people everywhere believed in devils, imps, fairies, goblins and ghosts, as well as legendary creatures such as vampires, werewolves and unicorns. Everyone feared evil portents, such as a hare crossing one's path or a picture falling from the wall. A pregnant woman must avoid gazing at the moon because it would render her baby insane.

Children were frightened into obedience by their mothers or nursemaids with tales of evil witches, spirits, elves and fantastical creatures. Women were grouped together with the sick and infirm as being particularly susceptible to 'vain dreams and continual fear' as a result of their 'weakness of mind and body.' Even grown men were afraid of the dark, for this is when it was believed spirits most often appeared. 'Some never fear the devil, but in a dark night…especially in a churchyard, where a right hardy man heretofore scant durst pass by night but his hair would stand upright.'

Jesus bible-thumpers, as are all religious superstitious people, aremore dangerous than any monkey that inhabits this planet Earth.

They are cowardly terrified of mortality and their so-called ministers have duped them into believing their idiotic minds have the answers to the terrors that plague their timid lives.

So they are gullible. Jesus bible-thumpers are easily susceptible.

Any time you hear any bible-thumper talking about Devils and Demons and Sins then you know they're talking about themselves.

Their lives have always been pathetic and meaningless and they need the scams of preachers to give them phony reasons.

People who perpetuate the idiotic belief of some "God" are truly the scum of the Earth.

Don't crap your pants just yet, DULLARDS!

No, your idiotic and phony "God" is not telling you "He's" angry with you.

Sheesh.

You mystic-thumpers are so unbelievably pathetic.

Not only are you so unbelievably IGNORANT but you also are part of the absolutely most EVIL of all human monkeys that existed before you on this planet. Never before have so many of you human monkeys pumped out gleefully so much enduring pollution into this planet Earth.

And to top it off, you perpetuate your IGNORANCE. You do nothing enduring but POLLUTE and produce more POLLUTERS. And you make more people IGNORANT.

And then you think some moronic "God" is watching you all the time.

You don't even know why there are colors to the sky above the planet.

You are truly pathetic.

Superstitious morons.

MOVIE REVIEW

'Planet of the Apes' (1968)

By RENATA ADLER

Planet of the Apes," which opened yesterday at the Capitol and the 72d Street Playhouse, is an anti-war film and a science-fiction liberal tract, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle (who also wrote "The Bridge on the River Kwai"). It is no good at all, but fun, at moments, to watch.

A most unconvincing spaceship containing three men and one woman, who dies at once, arrives on a desolate-looking planet. One of the movie's misfortunes lies in trying to maintain suspense about the planet it is. The men debark. One of them is a relatively new movie type, a Negro based on some recent, good Sidney Poitier roles – intelligent, scholarly, no good at sports at all. Another is an all-American boy. They are not around for long. The third is Charlton Heston.

He falls in with the planet's only human inhabitants, some children who have lost the power of speech. They are raided and enslaved by the apes of the title – who seem to represent militarism, fascism and police brutality. The apes live in towns with Gaudi-like architecture. They have a religion and funerals with speeches like "I never met an ape I didn't like," and "He was a good model for all of us, a gorilla to remember." Some of them have grounds to believe, heretically, that apes evolved from men. They put Heston on trial, as men did the half-apes in Vercor's novel "You Shall Know Them." All this leads to some dialogue that is funny, and some that tries to be. Also some that tries to be serious.

Sirius

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sirius (Greek, Seirios, lit. "glowing" or "scorching") is a star system and the brightest star in the Earth's night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of -1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The system has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris (a CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is a binary star system, consisting of a white main-sequence star of spectral type A0 or A1, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, designated Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.2 and 31.5 astronomical units.

Sirius appears bright because of its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth. At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), as determined by the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbours. Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System, so it will slightly increase in brightness over the next 60,000 years. After that time its distance will begin to increase and it will become fainter, but it will continue to be the brightest star in the Earth's night sky for the next 210,000 years.

Sirius A is about twice as massive as the Sun (M) and has an absolute visual magnitude of +1.42. It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun but has a significantly lower luminosity than other bright stars such as Canopus or Rigel. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old. It was originally composed of two bright bluish stars. The more massive of these, Sirius B, consumed its resources and became a red giant before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into its current state as a white dwarf around 120 million years ago.

Sirius is also known colloquially as the "Dog Star", reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog). The heliacal rising of Sirius marked the flooding of the Nile in Ancient Egypt and the "dog days" of summer for the ancient Greeks

Sirius

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ancient Greeks observed that the appearance of Sirius heralded the hot and dry summer and feared that it caused plants to wilt, men to weaken, and women to become aroused. Due to its brightness, Sirius would have been noted to twinkle more in the unsettled weather conditions of early summer. To Greek observers, this signified certain emanations which caused its malignant influence. Anyone suffering its effects was said to be "star-struck" ( astrobóletos). It was described as "burning" or "flaming" in literature. The season following the star's reappearance came to be known as the dog days. The inhabitants of the island of Ceos in the Aegean Sea would offer sacrifices to Sirius and Zeus to bring cooling breezes, and would await the reappearance of the star in summer. If it rose clear, it would portend good fortune; if it was misty or faint then it foretold (or emanated) pestilence. Coins retrieved from the island from the 3rd century BC feature dogs or stars with emanating rays, highlighting Sirius' importance. The Romans celebrated the heliacal setting of Sirius around April 25, sacrificing a dog, along with incense, wine, and a sheep, to the goddess Robigo so that the star's emanations would not cause wheat rust on wheat crops that year.

Radio Address to the Nation on Prayer in Schools

February 25, 1984

My fellow Americans:

From the early days of the colonies, prayer in school was practiced and revered as an important tradition. Indeed, for nearly 200 years of our nation's history, it was considered a natural expression of our religious freedom. But in 1962 the Supreme Court handed down a controversial decision prohibiting prayer in public schools.

Sometimes I can't help but feel the first amendment is being turned on its head. Because ask yourselves: Can it really be true that the first amendment can permit Nazis and Ku Klux Klansmen to march on public property, advocate the extermination of people of the Jewish faith and the subjugation of blacks, while the same amendment forbids our children from saying a prayer in school?

When a group of students at the Guilderland High School in Albany, New York, sought to use an empty classroom for voluntary prayer meetings, the 2d Circuit of Appeals said, "No." The court thought it might be dangerous because students might be coerced into praying if they saw the football captain or student body president participating in prayer meetings.

Then there was the case of the kindergarten class reciting a verse before their milk and cookies.

Superstition

How Skinner's pigeon experiment revealed signs of superstition in pigeons.

"They may seem unlikely candidates for psychological analysis, but pigeons have given a revealing insight into how animals, including humans, can be bound by superstition..."

The Superstition Experiment

In the Summer of 1947, renowned behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner published his study on a group of pigeons that showed even animals are susceptible to the human condition that is superstition.

Skinner conducted his research on a group of hungry pigeons whose body weights had been reduced to 75% of their normal weight when well-fed. For a few minutes each day, a mechanism fed the birds at regular intervals. What observers of the pigeons found showed the birds developing superstitious behavior, believing that by acting in a particular way, or committing a certain action, food would arrive.

Kerry Burgess, in the only time I know about, because he has not returned from his second trip, was in there for a time I later presumed because of his astronomical readings in the sky, of which I assumed was accurate in this real world. He had no clocks so he spent almost all his time, which was probably more than fifty years, trying to find a way to measure time. There was no people in that world but sometimes he would see mannequins positioned around and sometimes that mannequins would be positioned around where he had been trying to measure time, such as by chiseling marks into rock, which the mannequins were then standing in front of that had been sabotaged.

KIRK: Mister Cochrane, you say you were brought here a hundred and fifty years ago? You don't look over thirty five.

COCHRANE: I haven't aged. The Companion sees to that.

SPOCK: Captain. These instruments, they date from the time indicated. From your ship, Mister Cochrane?

COCHRANE: I cannibalised it. The food, water, gardens, everything else I need the Companion gives me. Apparently, it creates it out of the native elements.

KIRK: You say you can communicate with it. Perhaps you can find out what we're doing here.

COCHRANE: I already know.

KIRK: You wouldn't mind telling us?

COCHRANE: You won't like it.

KIRK: I already don't like it.

COCHRANE: You're here to keep me company.

KIRK: You mean you brought us here?

Zefram COCHRANE: No, the Companion did. I told it I'd die of loneliness.
