MEDIA ADVISORY M17-058
Media Invited to Demonstration of NASA UAS Traffic Management Technologies
The Phantom 3 multi-copter being flown at the TCL2 Demonstration at Reno-Stead Airport, October 2016
NASA engineers, FAA test site managers and representatives from UAS commercial partners will be at the Reno, Nevada, test site to host a media event on NASA’s test of technologies for safely managing beyond visual-line-of-sight drone flight.
Media are invited to see the latest technologies NASA is working on as part of its Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) project Thursday, May 25, at the Reno-Stead Airport in Reno, Nevada.
The flight demonstration, called UTM Technology Capability Level 2 (TCL2) National Campaign, will focus on flying small, remotely-operated aircraft, or drones, beyond the pilot’s line of sight in sparsely populated areas to demonstrate, evaluate, and refine functional designs and UTM technology prototypes.
NASA engineers, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) test site managers, and representatives from participating UAS commercial partners will be available for interviews. Media also will be able to watch and videotape a flight demonstration.
The flight campaign began May 15 and runs through June 9 at six FAA UAS test sites around the country. The test sites are partnering with government, industry, and academia to complete the flight tests. It’s the second in a series of four increasingly complicated demonstrations of UTM technology. The first phase took place in 2015, and the second began in 2016 and continues through this campaign.
It is envisioned that UTM will provide basic services such as flight planning, flight monitoring, hazardous weather and wind avoidance, and other services. Most of these services will be provided by a number of commercial UAS service suppliers, rather than by a single system. These service suppliers then support missions by UAS operators.
To attend this event, media must contact one of the following individuals by 7 p.m. EDT May 24, and arrive at Reno-Stead Airport by noon May 25:
Because the test range has been reserved for Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems testing, no additional drones may be brought to the test site during this time.

Jimmy Carter's Cardigan
By Nate Rawlings Monday, Jan. 09, 2012
On Feb. 2, 1977, just two weeks after being sworn in as the 39th President, Jimmy Carter delivered a fireside chat from his West Wing study. Carter, a peanut farmer from Plains, Ga., was using the power of network television to "keep in close touch with the people of our country, to let you know informally about our plans."
What caught the attention of viewers that night wasn't necessarily what Carter said, but what he wore: an unbuttoned beige wool cardigan, to stay warm after turning down the heat to conserve energy. That month, TIME wrote that the cardigan "may prove to be the most memorable symbol of an Administration that promises to make steady use of symbolism." Unlike today's era of hyper-stylized image consultancy, in which everything a politician wears is scrutinized, Carter simply wore for the taping what he had worn to dinner. He asked his TV adviser and adman what they thought, and they told him to look at the TV monitor to see for himself. While Carter would have myriad difficulties in the coming years, that early high point was purely authentic. "He was folks, and folks is in," a Republican insider told TIME. "I hate to say it, but from a purely analytical point of view, I loved it."

Good evening.
Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since I became President. I have spent a lot of time deciding how I can be a good President. This talk, which the broadcast networks have agreed to bring to you, is one of several steps that I will take to keep in close touch with the people of our country, and to let you know informally about our plans for the coming months.

I used the health insurance provided by Microsoft to obtain a prescription of sleeping pills from a doctor in Bellevue Washington because I was having a really hard time sleeping at night. Many nights I could not sleep at all and I would stay awake all night. That was well after I had started going to his office. I first went there to his office, after finding a medical doctor close to where I lived, for routine physical and I used the health insurance Microsoft provided to me to pay for the doctor's visit.

All those marathons I ran down south of Olympia. The run course started at Millersylvania State Park which you get to by taking I-5 and then taking Exit 95, of course, and then drive through Maytown. I told Ross Heise the first time I went down there, it was still dark and it reminded me of a scene from “The Howling.”

But the Time War did begin.
We always knew George Bush was an instigator of traitorous treasonous deadly war against the U.S. federal government but the best traitors are always the hardest to catch.
04/20/09 3:47 AM
As I explained to President Carter in late 1979, who can really say why the car to drive me to the Tehran embassy on 11/4/1979 was 15 minutes late that day.
I thought to myself again today about how maybe I should ponder over how I decided to wait for that late transportation that particular day, which I would not have on any other day.
04/20/09 3:50 AM
Only because I waited for that late transportation that day did I avoid being captured with the embassy staff.
I saw the mob storming the gates as my car arrived.
If the car had been on time and 15 minutes earlier then I would have been inside the embassy and I would have been taken hostage with the rest of the embassy staff.
04/20/09 3:52 AM
So as I explained to President Carter in 1979 we probably had one or more clandestine operatives within the enemy organization and those secret operatives ensured that my transportation was late so that I was not captured with the rest of the embassy staff.
Or I just got lucky that day.
I elaborated on how I just did not know.
But as I elaborated about whether he was trustworthy I used that incident as an example of how it really did not matter to me whether he was trustworthy or not. I explained that he could arrange for me to leave the hangar deck on any given day and walk straight into the subsonic blades of the tail rotor of a Sea King helicopter and to the point of no one even beginning to question whether I made that mistake on my own and so in terms of the president being trustworthy to me was really a moot point.
04/20/09 4:02 AM
Another point I made to President Carter was to elaborate on how I would pretent to serve as a junior officer while I was actually the most senior officer and that status would give me a great level of insight into how my orders were translating down the junior officer level.
04/20/09 4:07 AM
There is some other observation I wanted to make with these other observations but damned if I can now remember what it was.

Carter Announces Bosnia Cease-Fire Agreement : Balkans: Truce begins Friday, he says after shaky start with rebel Serbs. Diplomats remain skeptical.
December 21, 1994 DEAN E. MURPHY TIMES STAFF WRITER
SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — The Bosnian Serbs and the Muslim-led Bosnian government have agreed to begin a cease-fire on Friday as a small first step toward ending the 32-month civil war, former President Jimmy Carter announced Tuesday.
The modest agreement--one of many proposed cease-fires over the course of the war--came after an unscheduled second round of meetings between Carter and the Bosnian Serb leadership in nearby Pale. Carter called the extra session after conflicting claims about the results of their high-profile talks on Monday threatened to sink his entire peace mission.
Carter announced Monday that Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic had agreed to an immediate cease-fire, but Karadzic backed away from the claim a few hours later.
The Bosnian government was so angered by the theatrics that President Alija Izetbegovic refused to meet with Carter when he returned to Sarajevo late Monday, choosing to make the former U.S. President wait until morning, sources said.
"We have had this character 2 1/2 years, and he lies every day," said Bosnian Vice President Ejup Ganic, referring to Karadzic. "Make sure that you know with whom you deal."
Carter, said to be alarmed and betrayed by Karadzic's antics on Monday, made Tuesday's cease-fire announcement in Pale standing shoulder to shoulder with him.
After driving the mountainous road to Sarajevo, Carter repeated the announcement at the airport en route to Belgrade, where he plans to hold talks with Serbian leaders.
"There will be a complete cease-fire in all of Bosnia-Herzegovina, including Bihac, to go into effect at noon on Dec. 23," Carter said. "This cease-fire is to be completely monitored, without interference, by UNPROFOR (U.N. Protection Force) troops, interposing themselves between the opposing military units wherever necessary."
In The Hague on Tuesday, a two-day informal meeting of defense chiefs from 28 countries agreed on measures aimed at strengthening the U.N. force. At a news conference after the meeting, Lt. Gen. H.G.B. van den Breemen, chief of the Dutch Defense Staff, declined to give details on the measures.
It seemed clear the proposals carried at least the potential to make the U.N. force stronger and more effective, but they must still be studied by national governments and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and then approved by the United Nations, which so far has been extremely reluctant to employ force.
Van den Breemen said the chiefs had discussed, and apparently recommended to their governments, the use of aircraft and more firepower to deliver humanitarian aid to civilians trapped by the war.
"We talked about helicopters and armed escort helicopters," he said.
Such escort aircraft would probably be provided by NATO countries.
The tenor of Van den Breemen's remarks hinted strongly that the military chiefs recommended helicoptering supplies over roadblocks and permitting armed escort aircraft to attack anyone attempting to interfere.
The Dutch general also said the agreed proposals would mean adding to the U.N. force's troop strength.
According to Carter's announcement, the cease-fire would last until Jan. 1, during which time the warring sides would negotiate the details of a proposed four-month cessation of hostilities. If the two sides agree to that temporary peace, they will then turn their attention toward transforming the agreement into a permanent end of the war.
"We don't need more negotiations; we need results," one unimpressed Western diplomat said. "One has to be very doubtful this will go anyplace."
The diplomat and others described the process set up by Carter as fragile and ridden with potential pitfalls, especially since the former President failed to resolve what has been the most intractable obstacle to peace: the Bosnian Serb refusal to accept the Contact Group peace plan.
"In that key and critical area, I think they are still 180 degrees apart," a U.N. official said. "The whole basis of negotiations is still in dispute."
The Contact Group plan, drawn up by the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Russia, calls for dividing Bosnia about in half between the Muslim-Croat federation and the Bosnian Serbs.
The Bosnian government and neighboring Serbia have agreed to the international plan, but the Bosnian Serbs, who would have to give up one-third of the territory they now control, have repeatedly rejected it.
The United States and other backers of the Contact Group plan have described it as a take-it-or-leave-it proposal that must be accepted by all sides before any of it can be revised or amended. The Bosnian Serbs have said they would consider the plan only if it could be renegotiated.

Carter Announces Bosnia Cease-Fire Agreement : Balkans: Truce begins Friday, he says after shaky start with rebel Serbs. Diplomats remain skeptical.

Unable to reach consensus, Carter included the language from both sides in a written summary of agreements reached during his two-day visit but said he could not "detect any significant difference" between them.
"That is a difference in semantics that I have not been able to overcome," he said, adding after reading a note passed to him by his wife, "and I am obviously not taking sides as to whose language is best."
Carter's admission that he could not distinguish between the two positions sent chills through Bosnian government offices here.
Since Carter announced that he would visit their country, Bosnian officials have openly questioned whether his presence would be used by the Bosnian Serbs to undermine the Contact Group plan.
A U.N. official said that even if Carter secures a cease-fire Friday, it will have come at a high price.
"We're going to wait for the next two days" to see if there is a cease-fire, the official said. "Maybe it holds out a very slim chance of forward momentum, but it comes at the great cost of handing Karadzic a propaganda coup and muddying the international community's stance on Bosnia."
A cease-fire could significantly benefit the people of the Muslim enclave of Bihac in northwest Bosnia, which came under heavy shelling again Tuesday. Unconfirmed reports said there were many casualties in the area, including a 10-year-old boy who was killed.
But for a longer truce to take hold, Carter's deal requires the deployment of U.N. peacekeepers between the two warring sides.
U.N. officials said Tuesday that there are few available soldiers, and NATO military chiefs meeting in the Netherlands did not seem inclined to send additional peacekeepers.

As it fell upon a day
In the merry month of May,
Sitting in a pleasant shade
Which a grove of myrtles made,
Beasts did leap, and birds did sing,
Trees did grow, and plants did spring;
Every thing did banish moan,
Save the nightingale alone:
She, poor bird, as all forlorn,
Lean'd her breast up-till a thorn
And there sung the dolefull'st ditty,
That to hear it was great pity:
'Fie, fie, fie,' now would she cry;
'Tereu, tereu!' by and by;
That to hear her so complain,
Scarce I could from tears refrain;
For her griefs, so lively shown,
Made me think upon mine own.
Ah, thought I, thou mourn'st in vain!
None takes pity on thy pain:
Senseless trees they cannot hear thee;
Ruthless beasts they will not cheer thee:
King Pandion he is dead;
All thy friends are lapp'd in lead;
All thy fellow birds do sing,
Careless of thy sorrowing.
Even so, poor bird, like thee,
None alive will pity me.
Whilst as fickle Fortune smiled,
Thou and I were both beguiled.
Every one that flatters thee
Is no friend in misery.
Words are easy, like the wind;
Faithful friends are hard to find:
Every man will be thy friend
Whilst thou hast wherewith to spend;
But if store of crowns be scant,
No man will supply thy want.
If that one be prodigal,
Bountiful they will him call,
And with such-like flattering,
'Pity but he were a king;'
If he be addict to vice,
Quickly him they will entice;
If to women he be bent,
They have at commandement:
But if Fortune once do frown,
Then farewell his great renown
They that fawn'd on him before
Use his company no more.
He that is thy friend indeed,
He will help thee in thy need:
If thou sorrow, he will weep;
If thou wake, he cannot sleep;
Thus of every grief in heart
He with thee doth bear a part.
These are certain signs to know
Faithful friend from flattering foe.

I don't remember when I first read this. But it sure resonates with me. It is even ironic the part about May. If I'm not mistaken, it was May 31 when I gave up my apartment. I want to sit down and try to write out as much of a timeline after that as possible, but I can't remember a lot of the details, although I knew all along that my tormentors knew exactly what I was doing and where I was located every minute of every one of those days. And so in this message below, he is talking basically about how people can talk about being your friend, but it is when the world throws you down into some really dark place, it is your friends that are going to be there with you.

I have thought several times about a dream I had before waking up earlier today in the morning. I think about it again now, especially considering how my dreams are relevant to observations I made later in the day after having the dream, after watching on television the scene I reference now. The scene only lasted for probably a second or two of dreaming but I have thought of it several times today because of the good feeling I had during the dream. I cannot recall how it started out but the part I remember is that I seemed to be entering an office building and I got a pass to clip to my uniform shirt and I had full access to the building. What I did though is sit in a chair in the lobby, which I can only partially visualize and I could have gone on in but I was just sitting there watching people enter and leave and I think that is what I wanted to do. I looked at my watch. I cannot recall the precise time I saw in the dream but my watch might have read 12:38 PM. I sat there for a while and if I would have wrote about this dream back in early 2006 I would have wrote about how the narrator was talking to me in the dream but in the dream, no one spoke to me during that series of scenes. There almost seemed to be comments about why I was sitting there when I could go in to the office area and I had full access to that building. I was wearing a United States military uniform in the dream and after waking up I decided I was wearing a dress white United States Marine Corps officers uniform that is no longer in service. The uniform was very similar to the United States Navy officers ceremonial dress uniform but what I read earlier today is that uniform was phased in 1998, or maybe 2000. So anyway I was clearly wearing a United States military uniform and I got up from the chair in the lobby and I started walking through the office section and I was very glad to be there. I have been left with the sense all day about how I was back home. I have also been thinking that was some kind of office that I worked out of and that is here in the United States and I had been gone for a while and I was glad to be back and I was walking around and no one had realized yet that I was back. That was how the dream ended. I was walking around through the office and I noted that someone I knew didn't work in the same place. I was going somewhere specific but that was where the dream ended and I woke up and I think that was when I got up out of bed.
But anyway, as I read back through the scene I remember that before that scene was something about me being trapped in someplace that seemed to be a deep well. I was aware that I was perched on a surface and there was very dark water just below me in reach and I was worried about what was under that surface. But I was definitely trapped in a well, a long vertical cylinder of a wall made of stones and there seemed to be just enough lighting to see my surroundings. At one point I caught a frog. I was keeping it because I might have had to use it for food. But I didn't have to because I was only trapped down there for eight days without food and water and I didn't want to eat the frog, which was the only source of possible food that presented itself to me during that time I was trapped in the well. So then the part in the office building seemed to happen.

Matter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Usually atoms can be imagined as a nucleus of protons and neutrons, and a surrounding "cloud" of orbiting electrons which "take up space". However this is only somewhat correct, because subatomic particles and their properties are governed by their quantum nature, which means they do not act as everyday objects appear to act – they can act like waves as well as particles and they do not have well-defined sizes or positions. In the Standard Model of particle physics, matter is not a fundamental concept because the elementary constituents of atoms are quantum entities which do not have an inherent "size" or "volume" in any everyday sense of the word. Due to the exclusion principle and other fundamental interactions, some "point particles" known as fermions (quarks, leptons), and many composites and atoms, are effectively forced to keep a distance from other particles under everyday conditions; this creates the property of matter which appears to us as matter taking up space.

The City on the Edge of Forever [ Star Trek: The Original Series television series episode ]
Original Airdate: Apr 6, 1967
[Street]
(It's morning, apparently. Bums are still sleeping in shop doorways.)
CRIER: Extra! Extra! Get your morning paper! Get your paper. Read all about it!
(McCoy spots men going into the Mission and follows them.)
[Canteen]
(Edith is pouring cups of brown liquid.)
Doctor MCCOY: Oh, Miss. That coffee, it just smells wonderful.
EDITH: You look terrible! You'd better sit down. Come on.
MCCOY: I can't. I got to keep moving. I can't let them find me.
EDITH: There's a cot in the back room. They won't find you there.
[Mission back room]
(McCoy stirs, dislodging the moist towel from his forehead.)
EDITH: Hey, now, come on. You're not ready to take on any tigers just yet. Lie down.
MCCOY: The most common question to ask would be, where am I? I don't think I'll ask it.
EDITH: Why not?
MCCOY: The only possible answer would conclusively prove that I'm either unconscious or demented. This looks like old Earth around 1920 or 25.
EDITH: Would you care to try for 30?
MCCOY: I am unconscious, or demented.
EDITH: I have a friend that talks about Earth the same way that you do. Would you like to meet him?
MCCOY: I'm a surgeon, not a psychiatrist. I am Leonard McCoy, Senior Medical Officer aboard the USS Enterprise.
EDITH: I don't mean to disbelieve you, but that's hardly a Navy uniform.
MCCOY: It's quite all right. It's quite all right dear, because I don't believe in you, either.

Matter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the classical physics and in the chemistry of things of everyday life, matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume. All everyday objects that we can touch are ultimately composed of atoms, which are made up of interacting subatomic particles, and in everyday as well as scientific usage, "matter" generally includes atoms and anything made up of them, and any particles (or combination of particles) that act as if they have both rest mass and volume. However it does not include massless particles such as photons, or other energy phenomena or waves such as light or sound.

MOVIE REVIEW
'Planet of the Apes' (1968)
By RENATA ADLER
Planet of the Apes," which opened yesterday at the Capitol and the 72d Street Playhouse, is an anti-war film and a science-fiction liberal tract, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle (who also wrote "The Bridge on the River Kwai"). It is no good at all, but fun, at moments, to watch.
A most unconvincing spaceship containing three men and one woman, who dies at once, arrives on a desolate-looking planet. One of the movie's misfortunes lies in trying to maintain suspense about the planet it is. The men debark. One of them is a relatively new movie type, a Negro based on some recent, good Sidney Poitier roles – intelligent, scholarly, no good at sports at all. Another is an all-American boy. They are not around for long. The third is Charlton Heston.
He falls in with the planet's only human inhabitants, some children who have lost the power of speech. They are raided and enslaved by the apes of the title – who seem to represent militarism, fascism and police brutality. The apes live in towns with Gaudi-like architecture. They have a religion and funerals with speeches like "I never met an ape I didn't like," and "He was a good model for all of us, a gorilla to remember." Some of them have grounds to believe, heretically, that apes evolved from men. They put Heston on trial, as men did the half-apes in Vercor's novel "You Shall Know Them." All this leads to some dialogue that is funny, and some that tries to be. Also some that tries to be serious.
Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall and many others are cast as apes, with wonderful anthropoid mask covering their faces. They wiggle their noses and one hardly notices any loss in normal human facial expression. Linda Harrison is cast as Heston's Neanderthal flower girl. She wiggles her hips when she wants to say something.

"Clocks"
The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing
Come out of things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and a
Trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing
You are
You are
Confusion never stops
Closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop that you now know, singing
Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure?
Or am I part of the disease? Singing
You are, you are, you are
You are, you are, you are
And nothing else compares
Oh nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
You are
You are
Home, home where I wanted to go
Home, home where I wanted to go
Home, home where I wanted to go
Home, home where I wanted to go

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.
I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

MODEST MOUSE
"Bury Me With It"
We were shootin' at a mound of dirt.
Well nothing was broken, nothing was hurt.
But I probably really should have been at work.
But if my freetime's gone, would you promise me this?
That you will please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!
Well sure as planets come, I know that they end.
And if I'm here when that happens, will you promise me this my friend?
Please bury me with it!
I just don't need none of that Mad Max bullshit.
Well the suit got tight and it split at the seams.
But I kept it out of habit and I kept it really clean.
But if it's getting' faded, if it's runnin' outta thread,
Could you just do this for me my friend?
And please just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!
Well we moved to the left and moved to the right.
And sure as hell we stayed out almost every single night.
But if the party's over, if the fun has to end,
could you do this for me my friend?
Would you just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!
Good news for people who love bad news.
We've lost the plot and we just can't choose.
We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move.
We have good news for anyone who loves bad news.
We were aiming for the moon. We were shooting at the stars.
But the kids were just shooting at the busses and the cars.
So don't drink the water, don't you breathe the air.
If it's gotten to that point then I have to declare:
That you please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!
Well fads they come and fads they go.
And God I love that rock and roll!
Well the point was fast but it was too blunt to miss.
Life handed us a paycheck, we said, "We worked harder than this!"
Please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!
We are hummingbirds who are just not going to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we well not move.
We have great news for anyone who loves bad news.

Red Storm Rising (1986)
Tom Clancy
31 – Demons
Forty minutes later he was in one of several operations rooms, where the positions of convoys and suspected submarine locations were plotted. On the far wall the threat board listed estimated Russian assets and the numbers and types of kills accumulated to date. Another wall showed losses. If the intel guys were right, he thought, the war at sea had the look of a draw-but for the Russians a draw was the same as a win.
"Good morning, Commander," COMNAVSURFLANT said. Another man who had not slept very much. "You look a little better."
Better than what? Morris wondered.
"We have some good news for a change."
NORTH ATLANTIC
The B-52 crews were nervous despite the heavy fighter escort. Five thousand feet above them, a full squadron of F-14 Tomcats flew top cover, having just refueled from KC-135 tankers. The other squadron was tanking now for their part in the mission. The sun was just peeping above the horizon, and the ocean below them was still dark. It was 0300 local time, when human reaction times are at their worst.
KEFLAVIK, ICELAND
The alarm klaxon jolted the sleeping Russian pilots off their cots. Their ground crews took fewer than ten seconds to begin preflight procedures as the airmen climbed the steel ladders into their cockpits and plugged in their helmet radios to learn what the emergency was.
"Heavy enemy jamming activity to the west," the regimental commander announced. "Plan Three. Repeat: Plan Three."
In the control trailer, radar operators had just seen their radar screens turn to a cluttered nightmare of white-noise jamming.
