"Head Over Heels". Couldn't be clearer.

They don't have to do this. Whoever "they" are.

Sanity was statistical

[ Excerpt: George Orwell "Nineteen Eighty-Four" ] He had capitulated, that was agreed. In reality, as he saw now, he had been ready to capitulate long before he had taken the decision. From the moment when he was inside the Ministry of Love -- and yes, even during those minutes when he and Julia had stood helpless while the iron voice from the telescreen told them what to do -- he had grasped the frivolity, the shallowness of his attempt to set himself up against the power of the Party. He knew now that for seven years the Thought police had watched him like a beetle under a magnifying glass. There was no physical act, no word spoken aloud, that they had not noticed, no train of thought that they had not been able to infer. Even the speck of whitish dust on the cover of his diary they had carefully replaced. They had played sound-tracks to him, shown him photographs. Some of them were photographs of Julia and himself. Yes, even ... He could not fight against the Party any longer. Besides, the Party was in the right. It must be so; how could the immortal, collective brain be mistaken? By what external standard could you check its judgements? Sanity was statistical. It was merely a question of learning to think as they thought. Only!

Address Before a Joint Session of Congress on the State of the Union

January 27th, 1987

Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, distinguished Members of Congress, honored guests, and fellow citizens:

May I congratulate all of you who are Members of this historic 100th Congress of the United States of America. In this 200th anniversary year of our Constitution, you and I stand on the shoulders of giants—men whose words and deeds put wind in the sails of freedom. However, we must always remember that our Constitution is to be celebrated not for being old, but for being young—young with the same energy, spirit, and promise that filled each eventful day in Philadelphia's statehouse. We will be guided tonight by their acts, and we will be guided forever by their words.

Now, forgive me, but I can't resist sharing a story from those historic days. Philadelphia was bursting with civic pride in the spring of 1787, and its newspapers began embellishing the arrival of the Convention delegates with elaborate social classifications. Governors of States were called Excellency. Justices and Chancellors had reserved for them honorable with a capital "H." For Congressmen, it was honorable with a small "h." And all others were referred to as "the following respectable characters." [Laughter] Well, for this 100th Congress, I invoke special executive powers to declare that each of you must never be titled less than honorable with a capital "H." Incidentally, I'm delighted you are celebrating the 100th birthday of the Congress. It's always a pleasure to congratulate someone with more birthdays than I've had. [Laughter]

Maverick Satellite Still Eludes Lasso by Shuttle : Space: Target foils Endeavour's crew on 9 different efforts. NASA may try a new rescue attempt today.

May 12, 1992 ROBERT W. STEWART TIMES STAFF WRITER

HOUSTON — The crew of space shuttle Endeavour tried but failed nine times on Monday to recapture a stranded communications satellite that had spun out of their reach the day before, threatening to turn the mission into an embarrassment for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Navy Cmdr. Pierre J. Thuot struggled in space for 4 1/2 hours and three orbits of the globe as he sought to snag the 17-foot-tall, 8,960-pound Intelsat 6 satellite. At times he came excruciatingly close. Finally, he and fellow spacewalker Richard J. Hieb were ordered to give up.

NASA officials said Monday night they were considering another attempt today or Wednesday, during which they might instruct astronauts to literally grab the satellite with their hands. The seven-day mission, scheduled to end Thursday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, also could be extended, officials said.

Lashed to a small platform on the space shuttle's 50-foot robot arm, Thuot almost had the $150-million satellite hooked at 4:18 p.m. PDT.

As the astronaut gently placed a 15-foot "capture bar" against the bottom of the slowly spinning satellite, astronaut Bruce E. Melnick, working in the open cargo bay, exclaimed, "I do believe . . . "

But then the satellite slowly twisted away, apparently because two latches at the ends of the capture bar failed to fire.

"You were right in there," one of the seven disappointed crew members told Thuot as he watched the satellite inch away.

"I held it up there firm," Thuot said. "That's what happened, the latches didn't fire."

After the failure, Melnick pulled Thuot back into the cargo bay to await another chance to grab the satellite during daylight. But subsequent attempts proved equally frustrating, as the latches failed to lock onto a metal ring on the underside of the spinning satellite.

At the Johnson Space Center, spacewalk specialist Sam Gemar radioed Thuot to ask if he might have better luck without using the capture bar, which took NASA two years to develop.

"Pierre, would it be possible without the capture bar for you to grab the (Intelsat) spacecraft with your gloved hand to stabilize it?" Gemar asked. Thuot replied: "I don't think it's something I want to try today."

Monday's attempts followed Sunday's disappointing failure, when Thuot sent the Intelsat 6 tumbling wildly out of control when he touched it with the bar.

NASA officials said the Sunday mishap occurred largely because the ground-based simulator that Thuot trained on for a year did not adequately mirror the sensitivity of the orbiting satellite.

As a result, NASA officials said that Thuot, instead of applying the planned 10 pounds of force on the satellite, actually used 90 pounds as he attempted to snag it and grapple it into the shuttle's cargo bay.

"The system just proved to be a little more sensitive--or maybe a lot more sensitive . . . than we predicted," said Randy Stone, NASA mission operations director. "Nobody screwed up. Nobody did anything wrong."

Flight controllers at Intelsat's Washington headquarters fired the satellite's small rocket motors to halt its tumbling. They also used smaller thrusters to increase the satellite's spin, which enhances its stability.

By early Monday, the satellite was again stable and ready for a second rendezvous with Endeavour, an Intelsat spokesman said. The goal was to capture the satellite, clamp it to a new 23,000-pound, solid-fuel rocket motor and rocket it into its proper orbit.

A successful rescue of the Intelsat 6 would mark the first time that astronauts had saved a satellite by delivering a new rocket motor and attaching it in space.

At 2 p.m. PDT, flying 225 miles over Australia, the Endeavour began closing in for its final approach to the satellite, which was less than two miles away and traveling at 17,500 miles an hour.

Seven minutes later, Thuot and Hieb left the shuttle's air lock and entered the spacecraft's open cargo bay.

Meanwhile, Endeavour commander Daniel C. Brandenstein, working from the shuttle's aft cockpit, took manual control of the spacecraft as the shuttle came abreast of the satellite, flying about 2,500 feet below the target. Brandenstein slowly pulled the shuttle up in front of the satellite, with the shuttle's tail pointed toward the Earth. Astronaut Kathryn C. Thornton, 39, used a laser gun to measure the distance between the shuttle and the satellite.

The maneuver aligned the open shuttle cargo bay with the bottom of the Intelsat 6.

As the shuttle pulled into position, Thuot attached a small platform to the shuttle's movable robot arm, and stepped into a pair of stirrups on the platform. Tied to the platform, Thuot picked up the capture bar and began a practice session.

Hanging upside down over the cargo bay, Thuot gently bumped the bar along one of the handrails at the edge of the shuttle's 60-foot-long cargo bay. The purpose of the session was for Thuot to get a better feel of how much force would be required to capture the satellite.

Brandenstein, meanwhile, continued to fly the shuttle in a mini-orbit, up and over the satellite, killing time until Endeavour and the Intelsat 6 emerged from the Earth's shadow into daylight.

At 3:52 p.m. PDT, Melnick told Thuot: "OK, here we go."

During the next 26 minutes, Melnick made five attempts to place Thuot at the center of the satellite's undercarriage, which resembles a 12-foot-wide, rotating tin can.

He came close several times, but was thwarted by a slight wobble in the satellite, or by the proximity of the capture bar to the satellite's small rocket motors. After waiting for the next opportunity to work in daylight, Thuot tried again, with the same result.

If things had gone as planned, Thuot was to have grabbed the bottom of the satellite. Then, gripping a wheel built into the bar, he was to have slowed, and finally stopped, the satellite's spin, and then hooked the bar--and the satellite--onto the shuttle's robot arm.

The plan called for Melnick to then pull Thuot and the satellite back into the shuttle bay. There, Thuot was to have unstrapped himself from the arm. Then, Thuot and Hieb were supposed to have hitched the satellite to four docking clamps on the frame that houses the new rocket motor.

After the two crew members attached electric umbilical cords linking the motor to the satellite, they were to set four pre-loaded springs designed to push the satellite and rocket back into space.

Once the spacewalkers were safely inside, the crew was to release the springs and send the satellite assembly spinning away from the shuttle at a speed of about half a foot per second.

The satellite, which is to beam video of the 1992 Summer Olympics around the world, was stranded in a useless low-Earth orbit in March, 1990, when the commercial Titan rocket that carried it aloft malfunctioned.

Nineteen Eighty-Four

Part II, Chapter 9

written by George Orwell, year 1949

'Julia.'

No answer.

'Julia, are you awake?'

No answer. She was asleep. He shut the book, put it carefully on the floor, lay down, and pulled the coverlet over both of them.

He had still, he reflected, not learned the ultimate secret. He understood HOW; he did not understand WHY. Chapter I, like Chapter III, had not actually told him anything that he did not know, it had merely systematized the knowledge that he possessed already. But after reading it he knew better than before that he was not mad. Being in a minority, even a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad. A yellow beam from the sinking sun slanted in through the window and fell across the pillow. He shut his eyes. The sun on his face and the girl's smooth body touching his own gave him a strong, sleepy, confident feeling. He was safe, everything was all right. He fell asleep murmuring 'Sanity is not statistical,' with the feeling that this remark contained in it a profound wisdom.

Gritty police blog wins prestigious literary award for disturbing picture of officers' work in Brown's Britain

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Last updated at 11:14 AM on 24th April 2009

An anonymous police officer has won a prestigious prize for a gritty blog about life at the front-line of policing.

Jack Night - not his real name - won the special award for blogs at the Orwell Prize ceremony for Nightjack - an English Detective.

Over a 13-month period Jack Night exposed the day-to-day realities of dealing with criminals, life on the beat, courts and bureaucracy.

Sometimes making for difficult reading, the blog told tragic real-life tales as well as offering advice to law-abiding citizens in their day-to-day dealings with the police.

Judges described the blog as 'wonderful'.

In making the award, the judges said: 'The insight into the everyday life of the police that Jack Night's wonderful blog offered was - everybody felt - something which only a blog could deliver, and he delivered it brilliantly.

'It took you to the heart of what a policeman has to do - by the first blogpost you were hooked, and could not wait to click on to the next one.'

A fair cop: Policeman's 'perfect' blog wins Orwell prize

Sam Jones

The Guardian, Thursday 23 April 2009

The pages of a policeman's notebook, clumped as they are with impenetrable acronyms and tales of suspects proceeding in northerly directions, seldom crackle with urgent prose or lapse into howls of sardonic anger and moments of compassion.

But one serving officer, who used his daily jottings and professional experiences as raw material for a blog, has just been rewarded with the Orwell special prize for blogs.

According to the judges, the pronouncements of "Night Jack - An English Detective" provided a perfect example of the medium's power and importance.

"The insight into the everyday life of the police that Jack Night's wonderful blog offered was - everybody felt - something which only a blog could deliver, and he delivered it brilliantly. It took you to the heart of what a policeman has to do - by the first blogpost you were hooked, and could not wait to click on to the next."

Errrm Hello....Is This Thing On

Posted on April 22, 2009 by nightjack

Hello.

As you may konw, this blog was put up on bricks on 1st May 2009 for several reasons, not least of which was that I want to concentrate on writing a book. However, if you have anything on your mind, I am still reading any e-mails that come my way and I answer most of them. I am at thenightjack@hotmail.co.uk I’m also sure that I will be back at some point in the future.

This post was my immediate reaction, live blogged, to winning the Orwell Prize.

I am sitting here at home with a glass of fizz at one hand and sausage, chips and beans at the other. My representative at the Orwell Prize Ceremony has just rung me with the news that I have won. It has also just been twittered on Iain Dale’s Diary so it must be true.

I couldn’t go to the ceremony but I got a friend from way, way back to go in my stead. This is what I asked him to say

When I started the Night Jack blog back in February last year, I was standing on the shoulders of others. I heard about a Police blog called Inspector Gadget at work. I read it and I agreed with it. My comments on there started to get so long that one evening I sat down with my laptop and started a blog of my own.

As I wrote more posts I found that people were coming to my site to read and leave comments. Arguments started, some of them even came close to being reasoned debates. Then people in other blogs started linking to some of my posts and saying they were worth reading. As the readership headed over 1,000 a day, I started getting the occasional e-mail from the news media asking for an interview. I even got the obligatory Police blogging book offer. I am not now, nor have I ever been, a media cop.

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

Explorer 1 Overview

Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched by the United States when it was sent into space on January 31, 1958. Following the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency was directed to launch a satellite using its Jupiter C rocket developed under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory received the assignment to design, build and operate the artificial satellite that would serve as the rocket's payload. JPL completed this job in less than three months.

The primary science instrument on Explorer 1 was a cosmic ray detector designed to measure the radiation environment in Earth orbit. Once in space this experiment, provided by Dr. James Van Allen of the University of Iowa, revealed a much lower cosmic ray count than expected. Van Allen theorized that the instrument may have been saturated by very strong radiation from a belt of charged particles trapped in space by Earth's magnetic field. The existence of these radiation belts was confirmed by another U.S. satellite launched two months later, and they became known as the Van Allen Belts in honor of their discoverer.

Explorer 1 revolved around Earth in a looping orbit that took it as close as 354 kilometers (220 miles) to Earth and as far as 2,515 kilometers (1,563 miles). It made one orbit every 114.8 minutes, or a total of 12.54 orbits per day. The satellite itself was 203 centimeters (80 inches) long and 15.9 centimeters (6.25 inches) in diameter. Explorer 1 made its final transmission on May 23, 1958. It entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up on March 31, 1970, after more than 58,000 orbits.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

Cut to the sky above the Stargate, as a Goa'uld transport vessel glides down to hover directly over the Gate, a hatch in its belly opening.

Cut back to the path. O'Neill is slightly ahead, checking things out at the top of a rise. He sees what's going on, and turns back to the refugees.

O'NEILL: All right, come on, people, let's go. Let's move!

At his order, the group of people start moving again, this time running for the Stargate. Teal'c stops as he reaches O'Neill.

TEAL'C: The boy you seek is no longer who he was.

O'NEILL: I don't want to hear that.

Christ myth theory

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Christ myth theory (also known as the Jesus myth theory, Jesus mythicism or simply mythicism) is the hypothesis that Jesus of Nazareth never existed; or if he did, that he had virtually nothing to do with the founding of Christianity and the accounts in the gospels. The Christ myth theory contradicts the mainstream view in historical Jesus research, which accepts that there are events described in the gospels that are not historical but which still assumes that the gospels are founded on a basic historical core.

Different proponents espouse slightly different versions of the Christ myth theory, but many proponents of the theory use a three-fold argument first developed in the 19th century:

that the New Testament has no historical value

that there are no non-Christian references to Jesus Christ dating back to the first century

that Christianity had pagan or mythical roots.

Notable proponents

20th century

During the early 20th century, several writers published arguments against Jesus' historicity, often drawing on the work of liberal theologians, who tended to deny any value to sources for Jesus outside the New Testament, and limited their attention to Mark and the hypothetical Q source. They also made use of the growing field of religious history which found sources for Christian ideas in Greek and Oriental mystery cults, rather than Judaism. Joseph Klausner wrote that biblical scholars "tried their hardest to find in the historic Jesus something which is not Judaism; but in his actual history they have found nothing of this whatever, since this history is reduced almost to zero. It is therefore no wonder that at the beginning of this century there has been a revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth century view that Jesus never existed."

The work of social anthropologist Sir James George Frazer has had an influence on various myth theorists, although Frazer himself believed that Jesus existed. In 1890 he published the first edition of The Golden Bough which attempted to define the shared elements of religious belief. This work became the basis of many later authors who argued that the story of Jesus was a fiction created by Christians. After a number of people claimed that he was a myth theorist, in the 1913 expanded edition of The Golden Bough Frazer expressly stated that his theory assumed a historical Jesus.

In 1900, Scottish MP John Mackinnon Robertson argued that Jesus never existed but was an invention by a first-century messianic cult. In Robertson's view, religious groups invent new gods to fit the needs of the society of the time.
