Lewinsky's testimony is the most revealing. She was taken with Clinton's stature, his charm, and soon came to believe--truly believe--that Clinton was in love with her. "I just knew he was in love with me," she testified as late as Aug. 26.
Their sexual affair began, Lewinsky testified, on Nov. 15, 1995, after Clinton and Lewinsky made eye contact during several previous ceremonies on the White House lawn. On that night, Clinton invited the intern back into his office and asked, she says, if he could kiss her. She assented.
Clinton, his presidency imperiled, was obviously past whatever it was he felt for Lewinsky by the time he made his mea culpa. Not so Lewinsky. She watched, hoping the president would acknowledge their time together, her role in it, her loyalty. He never did.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--If not for this nondescript, gray van with the letters "SRI" painted on the side, you might not be reading this article right now. Parked feet from the entrance of the Computer History Museum here in the heart of Silicon Valley, the vintage van is being feted at a celebration marking the very first true Internet connection.
The first Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-based transmission between three separate networks--Arpanet, packet radio, and satellite--was made possible by the van, which was built by the research and development agency SRI International. It was driven for the first time on November 22, 1977. The same van was the key to the first packet radio network--that is, the first mobile digital radio network--a precursor to Wi-Fi and the other wireless networks of today.

(Sheppard smiles ironically, rolls his eyes and speaks without looking at him.)
SHEPPARD: I'm sure you'll warm up to me once you get to know me, sir.
SUMNER: As long as you remember who's giving the orders. (He walks away.)
TECHNICIAN: Chevron two encoded.
SHEPPARD (to Sumner's departing back): That would be Doctor Weir, right?
O'NEILL: Doctor Weir, you have a go.
WEIR: Thank you. Sir. (She turns to leave the room.)
GATEROOM.
SUMNER: Let's go, people. We don't know how much [ power ] we've got. (He starts to walk up the ramp, followed by some marines.) Security teams one and two, you're up first. All other personnel will follow on our signal. Once on the other side, keep moving, clear the debarkation area. On my lead.
WEIR: Hold on, Colonel. (Walking into the Gateroom while zipping up her jacket, she picks up a backpack at the foot of the ramp, then walks up to join Sumner.) We go through together.
SUMNER: Fair enough.
(He walks to the top of the ramp with a couple of other marines, raises his P-90 and aims it forward, then walks into the wormhole. Sergeant Bates and another marine follow him, their weapons also raised. As another marine enters the wormhole, Weir stops at the top of the ramp and looks back. In the Control Room, O'Neill nods to her. She nods back, then turns and steps into the wormhole.)
