June 8, 2002 Ironman Utah!

On Ironman morning as I battled 6-foot swells in Utah Lake, swallowing lung sized gulps of dark brown Utah Lake water, I feared that perhaps that dream just might become reality.

Unfortunately it WAS reality for fellow Ironman swimmer John Boland from Redondo Beach, California who lost his life in Utah Lake that day. The only swimming fatality in the history of Ironman happened in that Lake that day probably no more than a stone's throw away from me.

I was worried about the mass swim start in the dark, murky water. How long would I be bashed about? Will I lose my goggles? How can I spot other swimmers under the muddy water? - I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face during yesterday's practice swim!

Monsters, Most Familiar

The sleeping dream that has stayed with me since I was last asleep a long time ago now was of bicycling.

Man, that felt great. I saw myself really stretching it out and cranking out the miles on my bicycle.

Among the myriad sleeping dreams I tossed and turned over last I was sleeping I think that was the one I awoke from and finally dragged myself out of bed.

The dream was of a long-distance organized event.

Feels now that I have forgotten some of the details but I am sitting here now thinking that I have mostly just forgotten feeling.

The most interesting part was that I found myself lost. I was lost in some urban setting. Wasn't the typical West Coast high-density urban setting I would expect from Seattle or Los Angeles. I know downtown Seattle much better than downtown Los Angeles.

I have thought today often over that dream after waking and the thought occurred to me that setting could have been European. Cannot visualize enough detail to distinguish my experiences in Europe from my experiences in some cities and towns in the United States.

I did note some intriguing details that I now just suddenly remembered. I was riding my bicycle on some concrete steps. The steps had narrow sections of the concrete removed and those modifications created less of a barrier for my bicycle wheels as I ascended the steps. I cannot recall ever seeing a similar structure in real life.

Another time I saw myself quickly turn around and pedal back outwards from the furniture store I found myself riding into from the street.

You see, I was lost. I was pedaling around the sometimes narrow streets and there are other details I have forgotten now but I was struggling to find something familiar.

I found myself incredulous that I had no map with me for the bicycle course.

I found myself understanding that my progress to that point had been only because I was following along with the other riders.

I didn't even know the name of the town that was my destination.

So I was lost because suddenly I could no longer see other bicycle riders.

I wasn't sure if I had made a wrong turn or if I had simply been passed by all the other riders on the course.

The dream ended with me just pedaling around through streets and I was looking for something but I cannot recall if I even remembered anything before then.

After being awake for a while and which makes this what I call a normal dream, which isn't really compelling enough to talk about, I thought to myself that the circumstances reminds me of actual experience.

That was the year 2001 when I rode again the Seattle-to-Portland organized bicycle course but that was the year I pedaled by myself that 200 mile course and in one day. Well, less than one day. I can't now recall my finish time. 15 hours? 18 hours? Can't recall. Somewhere around there. I know I finished before dark. Can't recall now the date of that event but I think that was before my participation in Ironman Utah which was 6/8/2001.

In STP 2001 there were always bicycle riders around me, even when I reached the finish line after 200 miles.

Provo, Utah

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Provo is the third-largest city in Utah, United States. It is 43 miles (69 km) south of Salt Lake City

Provo is the home of Brigham Young University

History

The area was originally called Timpanogots (meaning "rocky")[citation needed] and was inhabited by the Timpanogos. It was the largest and most settled area in modern-day Utah. The ample food from the Provo River made the Timpanogos a peaceful people. The area also served as the traditional meeting place for the Ute and Shoshone tribes and as a spot to worship their creator.

Stargate: The Movie (1994)

(from internet transcript)

DANIEL
(calling to O'Neil)
Wait, wait!

[O'Neil doesn't notice him. He and the others push their way through the crowd, trying to get to the door.]

O'NEIL
Move it, move it.

KAWALSKI
Get back. Move it. Move out of the way.

[Kawalski and Brown shove people aside as O'Neil reaches the door. Villagers try and stop him from unlatching it, but he fights them off, breaking one man's arm. Brown and Kawalski take hostages and keep their backs to the door as O'Neil fires his rifle in a warning pattern at the villagers feet, making them back off.]

KASUF
Na-ney!

[Kasuf approaches, holding his hands up in a non-threatening manner. Daniel and Skaara come racing up behind him. Kasuf turns around and starts shouting at his people, motioning them to back away.]

O'NEIL
(to Daniel)
Get over here.

[Daniel complies. Skaara looks directly at O'Neil and speaks in a calm, unthreatening manner.]

SKAARA
Na-ney. Na-ney.
(he points above him while speaking more native words)
Yu yu. Yu yu.

[He gestures for O'Neil come with him to a lookout point on top of the wall. Kasuf and the people look on in wonder. O'Neil follows Skaara. Daniel starts to follow as well.]

O'NEIL
(to Daniel)
Stay here.

[Daniel stops; O'Neil continues up to the wall. Skaara points out to the desert beyond and speaks in the alien tongue. O'Neil looks and sees a large sandstorm approaching across the horizon. O'Neil nods to Skaara that he understands.]

KAWALSKI
What is it, colonel?!

O'NEIL
(yelling down)
Sandstorm comin' this way.

[Kawalski lowers his rifle and releases his hold on his hostage, who collapses on the ground with a gulp of relief. Kawalski breathes heavily as he releases his own adrenalin.]

Doctor Daniel Jackson
(dryly)
Well, that would've been an excellent reason to shoot everyone.

Jaws (1975)

Quotes

[the three men are comparing their scars]

Brody: What's that one?

Quint: What?

Brody: That one, there, on your arm.

Quint: Oh, uh, that's a tattoo, I got that removed.

Hooper: Don't tell me, don't tell me..."Mother."

[he roars with laughter]

Hooper: What is it...

[Quint solemnly clamps a hand on Hooper's arm]

Quint: Mr. Hooper, that's the USS Indianapolis.

[Hooper immediately stops laughing]

Hooper: You were on the Indianapolis?

Brody: What happened?

Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know... was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Heh.

[he pauses and takes a drink]

Quint: They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. Y'know, it's... kinda like ol' squares in a battle like, uh, you see in a calendar, like the Battle of Waterloo, and the idea was, shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin', and sometimes the shark'd go away... sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', the ocean turns red, and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces.

[he pauses]

Quint: Y'know, by the end of that first dawn... lost a hundred men. I dunno how many sharks. Maybe a thousand. I dunno how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland- baseball player, boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up... bobbed up and down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well... he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. Young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and come in low and three hours later, a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. Y'know, that was the time I was most frightened, waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a life jacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water, three hundred sixteen men come out, and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

[he pauses, smiles, and raises his glass]

Quint: Anyway... we delivered the bomb.
