§ 3005. Counsel and witnesses in capital cases
Whoever is indicted for treason or other capital crime shall be allowed to make his full defense by counsel; and the court before which the defendant is to be tried, or a judge thereof, shall promptly, upon the defendant’s request, assign 2 such counsel, of whom at least 1 shall be learned in the law applicable to capital cases, and who shall have free access to the accused at all reasonable hours. In assigning counsel under this section, the court shall consider the recommendation of the Federal Public Defender organization, or, if no such organization exists in the district, of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The defendant shall be allowed, in his defense to make any proof that he can produce by lawful witnesses, and shall have the like process of the court to compel his witnesses to appear at his trial, as is usually granted to compel witnesses to appear on behalf of the prosecution.

The prosecution showed the jury two-videotape re-enactments of Susan Smith's burgundy Mazda rolling down the boat ramp and into the water. During the showing of the videotape of the car filling with water, Prosecutor Keith Giese commented that the rear of the car was rising while the front of the car was filling with water and that Michael and Alex would have faced the lake's water before the water engulfed them. The videotape re-enactment of Susan's Mazda submerging into the lake showed that it took a full six minutes for the car to fill with water before it became completely submerged, because the car's doors and windows were closed.
On Wednesday, July 27, 1995 the prosecution showed the jury pictures taken of Michael and Alex after they had been removed from the Mazda. Judge Howard only allowed photographs showing the brothers' discolored and decomposing legs and arms. The judge would not allow several photos showing the full effects of the nine-day submersion to be shown to the jury. After the presentation of the photos, the prosecution rested its case

It has been several years since the disaster at the Delos resort (events of "Westworld"), and Delos is ready to reopen, replacing Westworld with the new "Futureworld," which is getting rave reviews. However, one of Delos's most famous critics, reporter Chuck Browning, is still not convinced that Delos has cleaned up its act, especially after an informant with inside information about Delos is murdered. Chuck teams up with fellow reporter Tracy Ballard and goes to Delos to find out why his source was killed. What they discover is beyond any of their imaginations.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

Christopher J. Scarver also was suspected of critically injuring another murderer from Milwaukee, authorities said. Dahmer and Jesse Anderson both suffered head injuries in the attack Monday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The space shuttle program closes a bittersweet chapter today as it attempts to launch Discovery with a $330 million NASA-owned communications satellite and a crew of five astronauts.
Discovery carries the last in a series of seven sprawling spacecraft that, together with ground-based signal reception and distribution terminals in New Mexico and Maryland, have revolutionized space communications.
"It's the most complicated and capable satellite system in existence," NASA space communications chief Charles Force said Wednesday.
Since the launching of the first of the satellites in 1983, the space agency has gradually assembled what is now a $3.5 billion communications system, permitting nearly constant communications between orbiting shuttle astronauts and Mission Control.
Additionally, it enables a half-dozen astronomical and Earth observing satellites, including the Hubble Space Telescope, to plumb deep space and monitor subtle climate changes below. The military also relies on the system to communicate with some of its secret satellites. Some components are used by commercial telecommunications companies, earning the space agency about $6 million annually.
The space-based communications system has permitted NASA to reduce a far-flung global network of two dozen receiving stations, some in countries hostile to U.S. policies. The expensive ground station network limited America's first astronauts to about 15 minutes of communication with Mission Control each time they circled the Earth.
Only a handful of the ground stations remain active.
But the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, as it is known officially, has extracted a painful toll for its benefits.
When the spacecraft were developed two decades ago, they were designed exclusively for launching by space shuttles. The 1986 Challenger accident claimed the lives of seven astronauts as well as the second of the satellites, forcing a major change in space launch policy.
Originally slated for June 8, Discovery's liftoff was postponed when a pair of nesting woodpeckers chipped nearly 200 holes in the soft foam insulation that covers the shuttle's 15-story external fuel tank.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Woodpeckers, NASA is learning, can cut both ways.
In late May, everyone laughed at the space agency when a pair of nesting woodpeckers assaulted the soft reddish foam insulation on the external fuel tank of the shuttle Discovery as it roosted on the launch pad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
Not so funny was the $750,000 it cost the space agency to delay a planned June 8 liftoff until Thursday so that 205 craters in the woody-looking foam covering could be patched.
But with Discovery and its crew of five astronauts now aloft, NASA is displaying a little humor as it pokes rare fun at itself over the incident.
Early Friday, shuttle commander Tom Henricks and his crew were awakened not by the usual strains of a "golden oldie" but to the mind-jarring laugh of the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker. Woody has gained mascot status since Thursday's liftoff.
"Just 'cause you are 179 miles up doesn't mean you can get away from that little guy," said Story Musgrave, the shuttle crew's liaison in mission control. "He's after you."

Lions led by donkeys?

As we approach the 80th anniversary of the armistice that brought the fighting in the Great War to an end, public perceptions of that war - particularly in Britain - are still dominated by images of the Somme and Passchendaele, of futile frontal attacks against machine guns in the mud of Flanders, of generals who were little more than "butchers and bunglers", and of brave front-line troops who were sacrificed because of the ill-conceived plans of incompetent staff officers. In short, ordinary British and Dominion Officers were "lions led by donkeys".
The myth of the uncaring general - safely dining and drinking in his chateau while the front-line troops lived and died in squalor - has proved especially durable - and has been reinforced recently by Stephen Fry's portrayal of just such an officer in BBC's Blackadder Goes Forth.
What is much less widely known is that 78 British and Dominion officers of the rank of Brigadier General and above died on active service in the First World War while a further 146 were wounded. These figures alone show that, contrary to popular belief, British Generals frequently went close enough to the battle zone to place themselves in considerable danger.

A very detailed dream about being on a Luge course at an Olympic competition. I can remember that I made two timed runs through the course. I can remember very clearly the first part of the course going down a large hill and going very fast. But the weird part is that I was going backwards and that I had to make a 90-degree turn about half-way through the course, which was very tricky. There was a wall there at the turn that I would have hit if I hadn't got it right. I can remember making course adjustment to my sled as I was traveling backwards and approaching the turn that would be to my left as my back was to it and it was a turn that I couldn't even actually see. I can remember that my time was in the range of 13-something, which I guess means the course took me over 13 minutes. I had no idea if that was good enough time to earn a gold medal. Then I was back at the course start I guess to make a third run. But I didn't see any point to it so I went into some kind of nearby building to return my sled. But at that point, my sled was some kind of copper-colored rocket. There were three people in the room and one was

First she called me Kerry Abner Burgess and then she called me Kerry Charlie Burgess, and she was saying something else but I think at the end, she just like the mike open and wasn't saying anything. I was at the start of the Luge course while she was talking and I was configuring my sled but now it included a chair from a kitchen table. It seemed that the chair would drag behind me on ropes. Instead of having the chair with its back flat to the ice while the legs were horizontal to the ice, the back of the chair was vertical to the ice while the legs were horizontal to the ice. Throughtout the dream, I have the indescribable sense of the blue sky, which I can almost visualize and which I could seen parts of the horizon of the sky and their is some indescribable notion connected to that visualization about jet aircraft.
