ANNALS OF MATHEMATICS

Princeton University & Institute for Advanced Study

This issue of the Annals of Mathematics is dedicated to Armand Borel, 1923–2003.

From Volume 162 (2005), Issue 1

Abstract

Armand Borel’s research lays at the foundations of much of today’s mathematics, particularly in the fields of topological, algebraic, and arithmetic groups. A strong believer in the written record, he often wrote expositions of the research of others, and devoted enormous energy to editorial work. He was an Editor of the Annals of Mathematics from 1962 to 1979.

Armand Borel May 21, 1923 - August 11, 2003

Princeton, NJ - Wednesday, August 13, 2003

Armand Borel, an internationally recognized mathematician whose work was fundamental to the development and formation of modern mathematics, died on August 11 in Princeton, New Jersey. Professor Borel, who was 80, was a Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he had been a member of the Faculty since 1957.

In 1991, Professor Borel received the American Mathematical Society’s Steele Prize for lifelong contributions to mathematics. The award citation noted that Professor Borel’s work "provided the empirical base for a great swath of modern mathematics, and his observations pointed out the structures and mechanisms that became central concerns of mathematical activity."

"In the course of amassing these astounding achievements," the award citation continued, "he placed the facilities of the Institute for Advanced Study at the service of mathematics and mathematicians, using them to foster talent, share his ideas, and facilitate access to recent developments through seminars and lectures. It is just simply not possible to cite a career more accomplished or fruitful or one more meaningful to the contemporary mathematical community."

Armand Borel’s mathematical work centered on the theory of Lie groups. Because of the increasingly important place of this theory in the whole of mathematics, Borel’s work came to influence some of the most important developments of contemporary mathematics. His first great achievement was to apply to Lie groups and homogenous spaces the powerful techniques of algebraic topology developed by Leray, Cartan, and Steenrod. In 1992, Professor Borel received the International Balzan Prize for Mathematics "for his fundamental contributions to the theory of Lie groups, algebraic groups and arithmetic groups, and for his indefatigable action in favor of high quality in mathematical research and of the propagation of new ideas."

After 1955, Professor Borel turned to algebraic groups, producing the classic paper "Groupes lineaires algebriques," which represented a turning point in the history of the subject and which led to many important developments. At the same time, he was studying, and eventually solving (with H. Chandra and A. Baily), some of the most basic and difficult problems of the theory of arithmetic groups. Professor Borel also worked on the cohomology of arithmetic groups and its applications, as well as various aspects of new cohomological theories, automorphic forms, and the infinite-dimensional representation theory of real and p-adic Lie groups.

"A dominant feature of Borel’s scientific production," noted a 1993 article in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, "is the systematic and conclusive character of his contributions to solving questions that are diverse, difficult, and always important. He wrote more than 145 articles before 1982, which were collected in a three-volume set published in 1983. A fourth volume of subsequent articles was published in 2001. But his presence in contemporary mathematics goes beyond his own mathematical production. Borel has played an eminent role as stimulator and propagator of new ideas in the international mathematical community. In particular, he has repeatedly initiated and participated in seminars and summer schools where important new techniques and results were brought forth." Armand Borel was born May 21, 1923 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He received his diplome from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1947 and his doctorat d’etat from the University of Paris in 1952. He served as an assistant (1947-49) and professor (1955-57; 1983-86) at the Swiss Federal Institute. He went to the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris in 1949, and then to the University of Geneva as a Professor of Algebra in 1950. From 1952-54, he was a member in the School of Mathematics at the Institute, and, in 1957, was appointed a professor at the Institute. He became professor emeritus in 1993.

A passionate music lover with broad-ranging musical interests, Professor Borel initiated a concert series at the Institute in 1985, and directed the program through 1992. The highly accomplished musicians he invited to perform at the Institute included the Indian flutist M.S. Shashank-Inidna, who gave a performance of Carnatic South Indian Music; the jaxx pianist Kenny Barron; the New York Camerata, who performed 20th-century music; the Art Farmer Jazz Quartet; the Chamber Music at Lincoln Center Trio; the Howard Shaw Endellion String Quartet; and Grafelmusik.

Professor Borel served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago (1954-55), and as a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1958, 1969), the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay (1961, 1983, 1990), the University of Paris (1964), the University of California at Berkeley (1975), the University of Chicago (1976), Yale University (1978) and Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan (1990).

Most recently, Armand Borel was the main organizer of the multi-year Summer Program at the Center of Mathematical Science at Zhejiang University, Hong Kong. Professor Borel spent four months of three academic years, from 1999-2001, at Zhejiang University in order to set up the program. In addition, he was working in collaboration with Lizhen Ji of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, with whom he was completing a book due for publication in 2004.

In 1972, Professor Borel received an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva, and in 1978 was awarded the Brouwer Medal of the Dutch Mathematical Society. A member of a number of scientific societies, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1976 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 1987. He was also a foreign member of the Finish Academy of Sciences and Letters, the French Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Academia Europaea. He was an Honorary Fellow of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

Professor Borel was an editor of Annals of Mathematics from 1962 to 1979. He was an editor of Inventiones mathematicae from 1979-93 and of Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici. He presented a Plenary Address at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Stockholm (1962); served as a member of the Consultative Committee of the ICM in Moscow (1966); gave an Invited Address at the ICM in Vancouver (1974); and served as Chariman of the Consultative Committee of the ICM in Helsinki (1978). In addition, he gave invited lectures at numerous conferences all over the world.

LATER. General Jack O'Neill, wearing military dress blues and sunshades, knocks at the door of Eli's house. Eli opens the door and stares at him in surprise.

O'NEILL: Eli Wallace?

WALLACE (nervously): Actually, uh, Eli's not here right now. He ...

(Ignoring him, O'Neill turns to the car parked at the kerb and beckons.)

WALLACE: OK, OK. Whatever you guys think that I did, I swear you've got the wrong guy.

(Doctor Rush gets out of the car and walks towards the house. O'Neill turns back to Eli.)

O'NEILL: Do I look like someone who'd be standing here if I didn't already know everything there is to know about you?

WALLACE: No, not really.

O'NEILL: Right.

EPISODE NUMBER - 101

ORIGINAL U.S. AIR DATE - 10.02.09

YOUNG: I need to get these people out of here.

RUSH (gesturing to the Gate): We have a way out.

YOUNG: We don't know what's on the other side. Dammit, Rush!

WALLACE: Can't be worse than here, can it?

(Rush and Young lock gazes for a moment longer, then Young turns and looks at the Stargate before calling out to everyone in the room.)

YOUNG: Nobody move. Await further instructions.

(He heads off out of the room.)

THE PRESENT. Rush has returned to the Control Room and he and Eli are investigating the control panel and arguing over which button does what. From the bored look on Scott's face as he sits slumped nearby, they've been doing it for a while.

WALLACE: What's that? Well, it doesn't look like life support.

RUSH: Yes, I realise that.

(He presses an area on the central screen and a floating holographic screen appears in the middle of the room showing a picture of the Milky Way galaxy.)

WALLACE (awestruck): Woah.

(He walks closer, as do Scott and everyone else in the room apart from Rush.)

SCOTT: What are we looking at?

RUSH: It's a star map.

PARK: That's the Milky Way.

RUSH: I believe it's a visual log of the ship's journey.

(Eli points to a flashing light close to the edge of the spiral.)

WALLACE: So this is where we are now?

RUSH: No. That's where the ship originally embarked from.

BRODY: Earth.

This is an echo from my reality too. There's really no 'probably' about it. I actually live in a time period that is 1000 years from now. We travel the stars not unlike people in this time travel between states.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 07/30/09 9:19 PM
Watching the 1994 film "Stargate" now on DVD makes me think of several lines of thought.

Two different lines of thought are about that medallion the young girl finds at the beginning of the film and that makes me think of what I was writing about how I made those medallions or whatever I called them for Phoebe back in the 1970's and of how I made a gold-colored one for her in 1975 with the name 'Phoebe' set in it and that was before I left for space to divert the comet.

The other line of thought is again about that woman but it is an extended line of thought I had a while about a woman that is actually and literally from the future. She is from the future during the history of the planet Earth when no one went out and diverted the comet. The woman I was thinking of might be a direct relative of Phoebe and me or just of Phoebe. It could be that she is from a history when I failed to divert the comet or she could be from a time from when no one including me even knew that the comet was on its way. But in that timeline, some of us survived in underground shelters after the surface of the planet was destroyed and rendered uninhabitable. So this woman is from the last surviving humans who are on the verge of extinction and she was sent back as a last resort desperate attempt to warn the past. The problem was that their time-travel technology was imperfect but they had no choice in sending someone back because they were all facing death in a short time and they did not have time to perfect the technology. The problem was that when she was sent back in time her mind was scrambled and she could not speak to even articulate what happened. They anticipated that though so they came up with a plan to have her interact with my father before I was even born and it was that interaction that caused the success.

There is more to that line of thought but don't feel like writing more about it and I find myself wondering how the extraterrestials figure in to that part. So anyway, that woman is still alive and she has gradually regained more of her mental capacity and she is still somehow an active part of whatever it is I am doing now.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 30 July 2009 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 07/30/09 11:01 PM
The line of thought is that this woman - perhaps called Mother as a reference beyond the standard reference to biological progenitor - arrived in her distant past and her interaction with my father was simply that she, in her state of mind induced by imperfect time-travel technology, grabbed the arm of my father as he walked down the street one day. That interaction altered him. He became an altered human being. A human being that was no longer a distinct human being but some kind of technically altered human being.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 07/30/09 11:08 PM
This movie represents, I think during many scenes as I watch it tonight, as I consider other details from other sources, that something is very wrong with the U.S. Air Force. Or something is right. I don't know. What I sense is not the standard rivalry of U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. In my role, whatever is wrong with the U.S. Air Force is what is wrong with me and that goes for any of the federal services because I am in charge of all the armed forces of the United States federal and state armed forces.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 07/30/09 11:20 PM
The scene of them being held prisoner in the water tank is consistent with a non-specific line of thought I have been having but I do not understand why and that is a line of thought of itself. The line of thought has something to do with how I will at some point in the future not even want to be in the presence of lakes or ponds or other standing forms of water. I have thought about that notion several times especially lately and I have been wondering why that notion runs through my mind. I think to myself that I have probably been held captive in such conditions and that I do not really want to remember but I do not think that is the source of this recent line of thought. The line of thought suggests that is about the future. I think to myself that it could represent a tsunami and I think back just now to occurences that suggest to me that is something that is definitely going to happen but there is something else that is even more dangerous. I think to myself about the film "Waterworld" but I don't know what that means. It means something but I don't know what. When I think about a tsunami, I think about how that will probably mean these people will not become fish food because they will be buried not unlike layers of sediment in all these structures around us. The tsunami will bury us all in the avalanche of the structures that surround us and so the sea life will not have access to decomposing human bodies. Not for a long time at least. The most insignificant of sea life will have access to those decomposing bodies but when I tend to think of how these humans here are better off as fish food I tend to think of them being food for the larger fish that are typically consumed by humans.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/06/10 4:29 AM
Assuming that my thoughts, considering my thoughts in recent days, are my sense of the future, I wonder if where I am now located represents physically the fictional "Grid Room" of the 1/14/1996 episode "Resurrection" that I am now watching.

I find myself wondering if my thoughts sometimes represent an awareness of the future. The past thoughts I now recall have no association with this episode but what I wonder about is the context. The context meaning that my thoughts represent an awareness of the future. The awareness of the future means that some kind of process is present in my mind that was aware several days ago before I had a greater that zero inclination to watch this episode on the Internet from then to this present time.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/06/10 4:36 AM
There is also, and more probable as an explanation, that notion of synchronization I wrote of earlier, and then I laugh in my mind as I write with a sense of rationalization about this paranormal sense. The notion of synchronization is a notion of predetermination, meaning that my thoughts representation the future that was planned for me. My choices were not predicted but my choices were planned for me and my thoughts represent that plan.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/06/10 6:13 AM
Especially interesting is that a few days ago I was thinking, imagining, a time I created a trail through the forested areas of, Vermont, forests and I was sweeping away the pine needles for a path for her to follow and the path led to a gazebo I had constructed out in the woods near our cabin, in the forest of, Vermont. I thought about that again as "Cain" and "Alica" were jogging along a path through the forest.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/06/10 6:17 AM
So was I again sensing the future? Was I sensing something I would watch in the future of a few days that would represent work I created a decade earlier to represent my real in that present time?

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/06/10 6:18 AM
Ah, yes, the vagaries of space travel and time travel. I do not sense the future but what I sense is what was planned for me to sense.
