Fire engulfs cult compound

WACO -- The Branch Davidian compound with 96 religious cultists inside -- 17 of them children -- burst into flames about noon today as federal agents continued a tear gas attack on the building that began at dawn.

The first flames became visible in the east section of the sprawling structure about noon. A second blaze broke out minutes later in the compound watch tower. By 12:30 p.m. the majority of the compound appeared to be engulfed in flames. No apparent attempts were made to battle the blaze. There were no reports that anyone fled the building.

The assault on the compound began when FBI agents in an armored vehicle battered through the walls of the compound and pumped tear gas inside in an effort to force out cult leader David Koresh and his followers to end a 51-day standoff.


The assault began about 6 a.m. and by midmorning, a hole approximately 10 feet wide had been punched into the building near the front door. At least three holes had been knocked in the southwest wall, effectively destroying the second story.
