Stargate Origins: Spokane

Production

Development

The film in its original cut plays out in chronological order, but when Devlin and Emmerich edited the film in the director's cut to tighten the narrative, they decided to change the first scene of the film into a flashback to show who the human host of Ra was before the aliens took him. Only Davidson's upper torso was filmed because Davidson had refused to take out his nipple rings. The first scene was a combination of model shots and a set in Yuma, Arizona where Rambo III had been filmed. The scene of the excavation of the Stargate was also filmed in three days in Arizona. A golden look was achieved by filming near the time of sunset. To keep within the limit of the budget, the producers put stick figures with cloth in the distant desert to appear as humans. The original Stargate was painted black, but it looked like a giant tire so it was repainted silver at the last moment.

Daniel Jackson's lecture on his theories was filmed in a hotel in Los Angeles. The scene was originally much longer and delved more into the theories that aliens had built the Egyptian pyramids, but the scene was trimmed for time concerns for the release. The scenes with O'Neil at his house were the first scenes filmed with Kurt Russell; his hair was cut short afterwards. Russell requested his hair color to be brightened a little for the film. The fictional facility housing the Stargate was the largest set for the film, located in Long Beach, California.

Release

Stargate was released on October 28, 1994 in the United States and released internationally in December of the same year. In 1995 the film was released on VHS and as a Dolby Digital-encoded laserdisc spanning two discs (three sides). The first DVD release was on June 18, 1997. The DVD format was re-released in October 1999 under the title Stargate Special Edition, and again in 2003 on VHS and a 2-disc DVD set with remastered picture of both the theatrical and extended edition.

'Stargate Sg-1' Gets A 44-episode Commitment From Showtime

July 27, 1997 SUSAN KING TIMES STAFF WRITER

Richard Dean Anderson has never been a science-fiction buff.

"I'm not a 'Star Trek' fan except for being a friend of Jonathan Frakes," quips the former star of the long-running ABC action series, "MacGyver," and the 1995 UPN western, "Legend."

So how is it that Anderson is up to his neck in aliens in Showtime's new sci-fi series "Stargate SG-1"? The program, based on the 1994 hit film, which starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, kicks off Sunday with a two-hour movie.

"When this became available as a viable possibility for me to involve myself with," Anderson says, "I had to say to myself, 'You always thought of yourself as an adventurer. Someone who takes chances. You certainly have got the broken bones to prove it.' I would be a hypocrite not to, at least, try and see what the science-fiction venue was all about."

Besides, Anderson says, he was ready to journey back into the world of series TV.

"Enough time had passed [since "Legend"]," offers Anderson, 47. "I had done a couple of TV movies, and 'Pandora's Clock' was, of course, a big commercial success. I love to work. I love the machinery of series work. It's at least a nine-month gig to which you get a rhythm and you can be creative. I like the aspect of it."

John Symes, president of MGM Worldwide Television, approached Anderson about starring in "Stargate SG-1."

"He used to be one of my bosses over at Paramount with 'MacGyver,' " Anderson says. "He called and said, 'I want you to do this.' He sent me the movie and I took a look at it and saw the potential for its success as a series."

In "Stargate SG-1," Anderson assumes the Kurt Russell role of Air Force Col. Jack O'Neill, who led the first U.S. military mission through the Stargate to another planet. When the series opens, a year has passed since O'Neill returned from the remote planet of Abydos, leaving scientist Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) behind. The portal has been closed and O'Neill is retired.

But the officer is called back into service after guards are attacked by snake-helmeted aliens who suddenly bolt through the Stargate and take a female soldier hostage. O'Neill and his new team go back to Abydos in search of Jackson. They are helped by a resident named Teal'c (Christopher Judge), who later becomes a permanent member of O'Neill's team.

The series--which has a two-year, 44-episode commitment from Showtime--will air in syndication next year.

Executive producers Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, who previously worked on Showtime's popular sci-fi anthology "The Outer Limits," both were keenly aware of the pitfalls of turning a popular movie into a series. For every "MASH" success, there have been numerous adaptation failures such as "Dirty Dancing" and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills."

"Both of us have kind of been adverse to doing a TV series based on a movie," Glassner says. "I have turned down a few series based on that. Most movies are one story and the end, and there is no point going on with it."

"Stargate," Glassner says, was different. "When I saw 'Stargate,' I said, 'This should be a TV series.' It is like a great pilot for a TV series because it is, by definition, episodic in nature. The Stargate has 39 symbols on it and it takes seven symbols to go to the planet they go to in the movie. Why are there other symbols if they don't go someplace else?"

In the series, the Stargate team will explore new worlds, Glassner says, and quite often will "stumble into things that they have no business stuck in the middle of, and they have to find a way out. They have to find a way to solve the people's problems they are stuck with. We also have people and aliens coming through the Stargate and coming to Earth. Some of the episodes are set on Earth."

Anderson's O'Neill is less intense and severe than Russell's character. Anderson says when he met with MGM and "everyone else involved" in the series, he informed them "if they wanted me to be part of it, they were going to have to buy into allowing me to bring my sense of humor, my sensibilities and my sense of irreverence and play to the character. A 44-episode minimum is way too long a time to be as stoic and as hard, edgy and all of those other things Kurt was."

A series, Anderson explains, shouldn't have a lead character who is a "perpetual downer. I have a sense of humor that I want to sneak in here a little bit. They were amenable to it. They cut around a lot of my stuff, which is sometimes born out of some improvisations. So far, the blend has been OK."

The producers say there's already a buzz about the series on the Internet. "There are all of these unofficial Web sites that popped up," Glassner says. "They even have names of some of the episodes and story lines which we don't know how they got."

Glassner and Wright say the proliferation of sci-fi series and movies has to deal with the impending millennium. "I think that people are starting to think about what is going to happen," Glassner says. "What the future is going to be like. Is there something out there? These shows explore that wonderment."

"Stargate SG-1" premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. on Showtime. On Aug. 1, the series moves to its regular time slot, Fridays at 10 p.m.

NASA anxious to hear from Mars rover as dust storm clears

MARCIA DUNN

Associated Press August 31, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA is anxious to hear from its dust-silenced Mars rover, Opportunity, as the planet's red skies clear.

Flight controllers have been on the alert for a message from Opportunity ever since a dust storm enveloped Mars in June and contact was lost. The storm has finally diminished. That means the sky is now clear enough for Opportunity's solar panels to receive sunlight and fire back up.

But NASA this week warned it may never hear from Opportunity again. If there's no word back in the next couple of months, NASA said it will cut back on its listening effort. Even if a message does get through, that may be the most the rover — mute since June 10 — can muster.

Even before the dust storm, the 15-year-old rover was exhibiting signs of old age. Its front steering and flash memory are shot.

"We are pulling for our tenacious rover to pull her feet from the fire one more time," project manager John Callas said in a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Opportunity's twin, Spirit, got stuck in soft Martian dirt in 2009, and NASA eventually gave up trying to free it. Both rovers were designed to operate for just 90 days, however, and exceeded expectations. They were launched separately in 2003 and landed on Mars in 2004.

NASA's younger Curiosity rover was unaffected by the dust storm; it relies on nuclear, versus solar, power.

Getting a new look

Tue., May 29, 2007

By Mike Prager

Nestled along the eastern edge of Riverfront Park, hidden behind earthen berms and rows of trees, lies a rarely used and largely forgotten part of the park – at least until now.

Spokane parks officials announced earlier this month that they will reclaim 2.5 acres of Riverfront Park that has seen little use since Expo ‘74, when it was known as the Boeing International Amphitheatre.

Light standards, a concrete stage area, electric utility vault, brick seating areas and small planters made from railroad ties are still there.

The amphitheater has served one important function over the years: It has been the launching site for fireworks displays.

But parks officials want to renovate the area as a venue for performances and private catered events. The area looks eastward up the Spokane River toward Division Street. A concrete dam with spillways flanks the waterway to the northeast. A sculptured sundial, set to daylight time, marks the location of the former Australian exhibit a short distance to the north.

“This kind of fell into polite ruin and became kind of a storage area,” said Taylor Bressler, park projects manager.

Last week, work began on the removal of trees that have been growing there since the fairgrounds were converted to Riverfront Park in 1975. Three large red maples were taken out. Rows of Scotch pines, white firs, more red maples, at least one ginkgo and other trees will be taken out in coming weeks.

“It’s a spectacular view of the river and with the overgrowth, for years it’s just been hidden,” said Nancy Goodspeed, parks spokeswoman.

Earthen berms built as part of the conversion of the Expo grounds to Riverfront Park will be graded down and the earth spread into the amphitheater bowl to create a better contour for seating, Bressler said.

When Riverfront Park was created, its trees were salvaged from Expo and intentionally planted close together to give the park a tree-lined look early on. Today, the oaks, sycamores, maples, pines and other specimens are crowded, Bressler said.

Removal of trees at the Boeing amphitheater will solve that problem, he said. Replacement trees will be planted with proper spacing, he said.

Bressler said performances were attempted in the amphitheater after Expo, but the venue never gained much interest. “It really served its purpose during the fair, but afterward it never caught on,” he said.

Goodspeed said the project will open sight lines, increasing safety for park users who might walk into the area.

In addition, Bressler said he is recommending installation of a heated restroom in a second phase of the project, possibly in 2008. The second phase would also include lighting and accessibility for people with disabilities. A shelter will be added either as a permanent or removable structure.

One idea is to open up the area for catered events put on by nearby hotels or the Convention Center, he said.

The first phase – removing trees and recontouring the land – is expected to cost at least $100,000 and will be paid for with money left from a park improvement bond issue in 1999. That work should be completed by November, Goodspeed said.

The second phase could cost $300,000. Financing has not been decided, although the parks department normally uses a portion of its annual budget for capital projects.

The improvements were approved by the Park Board four years ago. Goodspeed said one reason for delay was Avista’s rebuilding its dam adjacent to the amphitheater.

Bressler said, “We talked about it for too long. Let’s get it done.”

How to Identify a Sycamore Tree

Sycamore trees are abundant in the eastern half of the United States, and their hybrid relatives are popular across Europe. These massive, fast-growing trees are loved for their shade and their resistance to splitting. If you look carefully at a tree’s bark, leaves, and fruits, you can determine whether you’ve found a sycamore tree.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_pseudoplatanus

Acer pseudoplatanus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Acer pseudoplatanus, known as the sycamore in the United Kingdom and the sycamore maple in the United States, is a flowering plant species in the soapberry and lychee family Sapindaceae. It is a large deciduous, broad-leaved tree, tolerant of wind and coastal exposure. It is native to Central Europe and Western Asia, from France eastwards to Ukraine, northern Turkey and the Caucasus and southwards in the mountains of northern Spain and Italy.

The sycamore establishes itself easily from seed and was introduced to the British Isles by 1500, and is now naturalised there and in other parts of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand where it may become an invasive species.

The sycamore can grow to a height of about 35 m (115 ft) and the branches form a broad, rounded crown. The bark is grey, smooth when young and later flaking in irregular patches. The leaves grow on long leafstalks and are large and palmate, with 5 large radiating lobes. The flowers are greenish-yellow and hang in dangling flowerheads called panicles. They produce copious amounts of pollen and nectar that are attractive to insects. The winged seeds or samaras are borne in pairs and twirl to the ground when ripe. They germinate freely in the following spring.

The Fountain Cafe @Riverfront Park

The Fountain CafĂ© was designed to enhance the experience of Riverfront Park and Rotary Fountain visitors by contributing significantly to a sense of place and identity, inviting social interaction and enhancing the visitors’ experiences to Riverfront Park and the Fountain itself.

The aesthetic goal and design approach were to make the project feel visually unobtrusive and not compete with the Rotary Fountain by creating the feeling it was adapted from native basalt formations. An organic curvilinear shape dominates the design, with the building’s footprint and dining patio nesting comfortably east of the Gondola meadow. O'Neill turns briefly to Sheppard.)

O'NEILL: Hey. Don't touch anything.

SHEPPARD: Yes, sir.

(He stands in the middle of the room and looks around, a little bewildered.)

LAB. O'Neill, Daniel, Weir and McKay are there.

JACKSON: I figure the Ancients packed up their entire city and left somewhere between five and ten million years ago.

O'NEILL: In their ... flying city.

JACKSON: Yes.

(O'Neill tries to hide a smile.)

JACKSON: What?

O'NEILL (smirking): Flying city.

JACKSON: Well, keep in mind this is the race that built the Stargates. They did everything big.

O'NEILL: So why'd they leave?

JACKSON: Why'd they leave? Um, who knows? We know the Ancients on Earth were suffering from a plague. Uh, maybe some of them were trying to start over, seeding life in a new galaxy. Maybe that's what Ancients do. The point is, we know where they went.

O'NEILL: Pegasus.

JACKSON: Yes, it's-it's the name of a dwarf galaxy in the local group.

McKAY: After all that time, is there any hope of actually meeting them?

JACKSON: Who knows, but isn't that reason enough to go?

WEIR: I've been choosing members for this expedition for months, Doctor. I'm not the one who needs convincing. (She looks at O'Neill.)

O'NEILL: Oh, I'm convinced. (He looks at Daniel.) Have fun.

JACKSON: Uh, it's-it's-it's a little more complicated than that.

McKAY: We need the ZedP.M. to power the Gate.

O'NEILL: What?

JACKSON: ZeeP.M. He's, uh, he's Canadian.

O'NEILL (sympathetically to McKay): I'm sorry.

McKAY: The Zero Point Module, General. The, uh, Ancient power source you recovered from Proclarush Taonas and that's now powering the outpost's defences. I have since determined that it generates its enormous power from vacuum energy derived from a self-contained region of subspace time.

O'NEILL: That was a waste of a perfectly good explanation. (He turns to the other two.) The answer's no.

MAIN ROOM. Sheppard is still wandering around. He walks over to the Chair Room

(Beckett looks at him suspiciously.)

BECKETT: You do have security clearance to be here?

SHEPPARD: Yeah, yeah. General O'Neill just gave it to me.

(Beckett's eyes widen.)

BECKETT: Then you don't even know about the Stargate.

SHEPPARD: The what?

(Doctor Daniel Jackson runs into view.)

JACKSON: Ah, just the people I need to see.

(He turns and walks away again. Weir and McKay look at each other. After a few moments, Daniel comes back into view.)

JACKSON: Come with me.

(He walks away again. This time Weir and McKay follow him.)

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. Daniel leads the other two into a lab.

JACKSON: We've gotten closer and closer to finding the location of the Lost City but it turns out we've been looking in the wrong place all along. (He walks over to a whiteboard on which are drawn six Stargate coordinates with the numbers 1-6 above them.) Now, we thought we had a Stargate address -- six symbols representing coordinates in space that determine the location of the planet the Ancients went to after they left Antarctica. Now, recently we determined a seventh symbol. (He picks up a pen and draws the symbol representing Earth on the board to the right of the other symbols.)

WEIR: The point of origin, Earth.

JACKSON: That's not it.

McKAY: Then your address must be incorrect.

JACKSON: Not incorrect… incomplete.

(He draws another symbol in between the sixth symbol and the Earth symbol.)

WEIR: What are you saying, Doctor Jackson?

(Daniel numbers the newest symbol 7 and the Earth symbol 8.)

JACKSON: It's an eight symbol address. What we're looking for may be further away than we ever imagined, but it's not out of reach.

McKAY: Atlantis!

JACKSON: Atlantis. I think we can go there.

Rotary breaks ground on park fountain

By Hilary Kraus

You've viewed 4 of 5 free stories this month.

The seed was planted nearly 30 years ago, but it wasn’t until Friday that city and Rotary Club officials broke ground on the Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park.

Beneath an intermittent drizzle, the group gathered on a three-quarter-acre site that will be transformed into a $1.25 million interactive water fountain and plaza. It is scheduled to open in late May 2005, in time for the Northwest district Rotary conference.

Project designer Bob Perron was among those who watched as the first holes were dug into the cold, wet ground by Mayor Jim West, Dan Cadagan, Rotary Foundation project committee chairman, and other dignitaries. Perron, designer of Riverfront Park, had the vision of an elaborate entrance fountain in 1975.”There was not enough money in the budget then,” Perron said.

Perron, a resident of Portland and architect of that city’s Salmon Street Spring, said the idea resurfaced about 2½ years ago. The Rotary Club wanted to make a major contribution to the city.

The fountain and plaza are being funded by a public-private partnership between the Spokane Park Board and the Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21. The fundraising has reached 96 percent of the needed amount, thanks to 415 donors, including 31 who each gave more than $5,000.

“This is by far the most significant project we have ever taken on,” Nancy Kennedy, Club 21 president said during the formal ceremony.

The fountain and plaza will bring a radically different look to the entrance of the park. It will cover an area from the Spokane River to Spokane Falls Boulevard on the south border and from the carousel to the “Christmas tree” on the west edge.

Harold Balazs, commissioned as the sculptor, has designed a work that will tell the story of the Spokane Falls and its relationship to native people.

“We were interested in a fountain that reflected in the history of the community,” said Perron, who has worked with Balazs on other architectural projects.

But unlike Perron’s original idea – sculptured children holding hands in water – the flat-deck Rotary Fountain will be run by computer and will be constantly changing. It will have about 140 water jets, sprays, misters, ground hugging fog and other features. It will stand on five stainless columns that are 24 feet high.

The fountain will be open for anyone who wants to play in the water, and will operate from 6 a.m. until midnight from mid-spring to mid-fall, temperature permitting. The fountain may be operated in winter with the mist creating ice formations.

Annual maintenance is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000, Cadagan said. Power alone would cost about $12,000 a year.

Perron said most of the construction is underground piping, which can be done in winter.

“This is going to be one of those things that brings ‘Wow!’ to the city,” West said.

Buzzword

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A buzzword is a word or phrase, new or already existing, that becomes very popular for a period of time. Buzzwords often derive from technical terms yet often have much of the original technical meaning removed through fashionable use, being simply used to impress others; although such "buzzwords" may still have the full meaning when used in certain technical contexts. Buzzwords often originate in jargon, acronyms, or neologisms. Examples of overworked business buzzwords include synergy, vertical, dynamic, cyber and strategy; a common buzzword phrase is "think outside the box".

It has been stated that businesses could not operate without buzzwords, as they are shorthands or internal shortcuts that make perfect sense to people informed of the context. However, a useful buzzword can become co-opted into general popular speech and lose its usefulness. According to management professor Robert Kreitner, "Buzzwords are the literary equivalent of Gresham's Law. They will drive out good ideas." Buzzwords can also be seen in business as a way to make people feel like they are all on the same plane. As most workplaces use a specialized jargon, which could be argued is another form of buzzwords, it allows quicker communication. Indeed, many new hires feel more like "part of the team" the quicker they learn the buzzwords of their new workplace. Buzzwords permeate people's working lives so much that many don't realise that they are using them.

Stargate Atlantis - Rising - television series premiere episode part 1 and 2 - Friday 16 July 2004 (DVD extended version)

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

&&&
&&&

HOLOGRAM: In our over-confidence, we were unprepared and outnumbered. The enemy fed upon defenceless human worlds like a great scourge until finally only Atlantis remained. This city's great shield was powerful enough to withstand their terrible weapons but here we were besieged for many years. In an effort to save the last of our kind, we submerged our great city into the ocean. The Atlantis Stargate was the one and only link back to Earth from this galaxy, and those who remained used it to return to that world that was once home. There, the last survivors of Atlantis lived out the remainder of their lives. This city was left to slumber, in the hope that our kind would one day return.

Doctor Zefram COCHRANE: Please ...don't tell me it's all thanks to me. I've heard enough about the great Zefram Cochrane. I don't know who writes your history books or where you get your information from, but you people got some pretty funny ideas about me. You all look at me as if I'm some kind of saint or visionary or something.

RIKER: I don't think you're a saint, Doc, but you did have a vision. ...And now we're sitting in it.

COCHRANE: You wanna know what my vision is? ...Dollar signs! Money! I didn't build this ship to usher in a new era for humanity. You think I wanna go to the stars? I don't even like to fly. I take trains. I built this ship so that I could retire to some tropical island filled with ...naked women. That's Zefram Cochrane. That's his vision. This other guy you keep talking about. This historical figure. I never met him. I can't imagine I ever will.

Bikini Atoll

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bikini Atoll ( Marshallese: 'Pikinni', meaning "coconut place") is an atoll in the Marshall Islands which consists of 23 islands totalling 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) surrounding a 229.4-square-mile (594.1 km2) central lagoon. It is at the northern end of the Ralik Chain, approximately 87 kilometres (54 mi) northwest of Ailinginae Atoll and 850 kilometres (530 mi) northwest of Majuro. Within Bikini Atoll, Bikini, Eneu, Namu and Enidrik islands comprise just over 70% of the land area. Bikini and Eneu are the only islands of the atoll that hosted a permanent population. Bikini Island is the northeastern most and largest islet. Before World War II, the atoll was known by its German name, Eschscholtz Atoll.

The atoll is known for the nuclear testing the United States conducted on it during the 1940s and 1950s

Fat Man and Little Boy (1989)

In real life, Robert Oppenheimer was the scientific head of the Manhattan Project, the secret wartime project in New Mexico where the first atomic bombs were designed and built. General Leslie Groves was in overall command of it. This film reenacts the project with an emphasis on their relationship.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B41_nuclear_bomb

The B41 was a thermonuclear weapon deployed by the United States Strategic Air Command in the early 1960s.

Development

The development of the Mk 41 began in 1955 with a USAF requirement for a Class B (high-yield, over 10,000 lb/4,545 kg) weapon. It was based on the "Bassoon" test device first fired in the Redwing Zuni test of 27 May 1956. An ICBM warhead version of the weapon was cancelled in 1957.

Composition

The Mk 41 was the only three-stage thermonuclear weapon fielded by the U.S. It had a deuterium-tritium boosted primary, probably with lithium-6-enriched deuteride fuel for the fusion reaction. Two versions were deployed, Y1, a "dirty" version with a tertiary stage encased with U-238, and Y2, a "clean" version with a lead-encased tertiary.

It was the highest-yield nuclear weapon ever deployed by the United States, with a maximum yield of 25 megatons.

Physical characteristics

The weapon was 12 ft 4 in (3.76 m) long, with a body diameter of 52 in (132 cm). It weighed 10,670 lb (4,850 kg). It was carried only by the B-52 Stratofortress and B-47 Stratojet. It could be deployed in free-fall or retarded (parachute) configuration, and could be set for airburst, groundburst, or laydown delivery.

Service life

The Mk 41 (designated B41 from 1968 on) entered service in 1961. About 500 of these weapons were manufactured between September 1960 and June 1962. The Mk 41 was progressively phased out of service from 1963 in favor of the B53 nuclear bomb. The last B41s were retired in July 1976.

Coming Back To Life Lyrics

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of lifeand the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun

[Planet surface]

Captai KIRK: Take a look around, Bones.

(Spock checks the shuttlecraft for damage.)

SPOCK: Most unusual. Unlikely. In fact, Captain, I would say quite impossible.

KIRK: Nothing wrong and nothing works.

SPOCK: Precisely.

KIRK: There must be a reason.

SPOCK: Obviously.

KIRK: Let's look a little further.

(Nancy comes out of the shuttlecraft.)

MCCOY: Jim, I just took a tricording sweep, and I got the same readings almost as Spock got when we were pulled off course.

SPOCK: The ionised cloud.

MCCOY: I think so, only it reads here on the surface with us. It's in that direction, and it doesn't read solid. It's more unstable, tenuous, like a collection of gases.

COCHRANE: Hello! Hello!

(A figure in an orange jumpsuit waves and runs towards them.)

SPOCK: Fascinating.

KIRK: Bones, get a physiological reading on that, whatever it is.

COCHRANE: Hello! Are you real? I mean, I'm not imagining you, am I?

KIRK: We're real enough.

COCHRANE: You speak English. Earth people?

KIRK: From the Federation.

COCHRANE: The F? Well, it doesn't matter. I'm Cochrane. I've been marooned here who knows how long.

https://etcweb.princeton.edu/CampusWWW/Companion/charter.html

Charter, The,

Charter, The, which created the corporation originally known as The Trustees of the College of New Jersey, was granted in the name of King George II and ``passed the Great Seal'' of the Province of New Jersey on October 22, 1746.
This charter authorized the erection of a college ``for the Education of Youth in the Learned Languages and in the Liberal Arts and Sciences,'' designated seven men, with five others to be chosen by them, to be the trustees of the college, and ordained that ``the said Trustees and their Successors shall forever hereafter be, in Deed, Fact & Name a Body corporate & politick.''

The charter granted the trustees and their successors full power and authority to acquire real and personal property, to erect buildings, to elect a president, tutors, professors, and other officers, to grant degrees, and to establish ordinances and laws ``not repugnant to the Laws and Statutes of . . . Great Britain, or . . . of New Jersey, and not excluding any Person of any religious Denomination whatsoever from . . . any of the Liberties, Privileges, or immunities of the . . . College, on account of his . . . being of a Religious profession Different from the . . . Trustees of the College.''

The original charter was issued by John Hamilton, president of the Council of the Province of New Jersey, who was acting as governor at the time. Because Hamilton's authority was questioned, the legal status of the College came under attack, and a second charter was therefore issued in 1748 by Jonathan Belcher, newly appointed governor of the province.* It corresponded, for the most part, to the charter of 1746, but it increased the maximum number of trustees from twelve to twenty-three, made the governor of New Jersey a trustee ex-officio, and stipulated that twelve trustees were to be inhabitants of the State of New Jersey.+

In 1780, the Council (i.e., Senate) and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey, on petition of the trustees, confirmed the royal charter of 1748 with minor changes, one being that each trustee swear allegiance to the state in which he resided instead of to the king of Great Britain. A further legislative enactment, adopted in 1799, required him also to affirm his intention to support the Constitution of the United States. Still another, adopted in 1866, directed him to swear to perform the duties of his office faithfully and impartially, thus adding the third article of the oath each new trustee has taken ever since.

On February 13, 1896, the corporation adopted a resolution changing its name to The Trustees of Princeton University. President Patton publicly proclaimed this change on October 22, 1896, the 150th anniversary of the granting of the first charter.

The ``yearly clear value'' of real and personal property the trustees were allowed to acquire for the purpose of the corporation was limited at one time to the equivalent of 20,000 bushels of wheat. Since 1903 the corporation's capacity to receive real and personal property has been -- legally -- unlimited.

In 1963, the Board of Trustees adopted a complete revision of the charter, simplifying and modernizing its language to reflect the requirements and benefits of present law and corporate practice. This revision was filed with the Secretary of State as constituting the current Certificate of Incorporation of The Trustees of Princeton University.

After commanding a regiment for the cause of William of Orange during the Williamite War in Ireland, he commanded a regiment in the Low Countries during the Nine Years' War. He then led the final assault at the Battle of Blenheim attacking the village churchyard with eight battalions of men and then receiving the surrender of its French defenders during the War of the Spanish Succession. He also led the charge of fifteen infantry battalions in an extremely bloody assault on the French entrenchments at the Battle of Malplaquet. In later life he became a Lord of the Bedchamber to George I and was installed as Governor of Edinburgh Castle.

MCCOY: That's a pretty far out story.

KIRK: Mister Cochrane, do you have a first name?

COCHRANE: Zefram.

KIRK: Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centuri, the discoverer of the space warp?

COCHRANE: That's right, Captain.

MCCOY: But that's impossible. Zefram Cochrane died a hundred and fifty years ago.

SPOCK: The name of Zefram Cochrane is revered throughout the known galaxy. Planets were named after him. Great universities, cities.

KIRK: Isn't your story a little improbable, Mister Cochrane?
