Bush's missing year

In 1972, George W. Bush dropped out of his National Guard service and later lied about it. With the media finally paying attention, will he now come clean?

I wonder if that's the same day I remember graduating from United States Navy basic training in Orlando.

Must have been.

The uncertainty in my mind is because of vague memories I still have about those last days before we left.

I can still visualize that last day, had my seabag and sunglasses on and the company commander sending us off and I can visualize myself walking for the last time out the door of that barracks we had been in for 8 weeks.

I went across base to begin Basic Electricity and Electronics School for the Electronics Technician occupation rating, a rating I chose because it was one of only two ratings in the Advanced Electronics Field, along with Fire Controlman, and the ET rating required several more weeks of electronics training than FC and I found that appealing to me. Several weeks later, being completely unprepared for unhindered access to cheap alcohol, having been sheltered from alcohol and then on my own with no old woman screeching at me, with no closed door in her house I could ever escape to away from her, I let myself get kicked out of school and sent out to the fleet to work in the deck department as a non-rated sailor. Working my butt off, as since 14 years old, from my own personal initiative and with no personal role models in my past experience, I had become accustomed to regular employment, I was allowed to select a rating to aspire for and I chose the gun/missile Fire Controlman (FC) (in the last days of the Fire Control Technician Missiles (FTM) rating) and worked my way back up and my next fleet assignment was with a bunch of push-button technicians whose career track had been the same as my original aspirations with the ET rating. They went to school for several courses of instruction and were advanced to Petty Officer Third Class (E-4 paygrade after entering recruit training as E-3 paygrade) without ever working a day in the fleet. I had spent over a year - a total of 419 days to be exact - on a shakedown period for the USS Taylor FFG-50 where I had many responsibilities including being responsible for the boatswain locker, helmsman, lookout, repair locker personnel, damage control, others.

All I know for certain is my official military records tell me I was transferred from basic training by the United States Navy on Monday, July 16, 1984.

The previous Friday was the 13th.

The details I vaguely recall are about how my company, C155, finished the course of instruction several days before the other company's finished. The reason, I vaguely recall, is that several companies began the course of instruction during the same week but on different days of the week. So we started on a day before the others started and we finished a few days before the last company finished. If we started on a Monday then others started on Friday. So we finished on a Monday and they finished on a Friday. But we all graduated on the same day, which I believe was a Friday and I have reason to believe was the 13th. I can't imagine we were goofing off for over a week waiting for the other company to finish the course. K076 was the female company I remember starting with us on the same day and I think they were in the same large classroom with us for classroom instruction. I remember a vast number of sailors being on the field for graduation ceremony and my company was a large group of sailors.

The answer might be out there somewhere on the internet but I can't find it.

The American Legion

"Retreat, hell! We just got here."

DEC 11, 2014

America entered World War I to reinforce the battered French and British troops waging a desperate fight against Germany. On June 2, 1918, a division of Marines was sent to support the French army at Belleau Wood. As the Marines arrived, they found French troops retreating through their lines. A French colonel, attempting to acquaint the Americans with the realities of the situation and not trusting his spoken English, scribbled a note to the officer in charge of the Americans ordering them to retreat. The Marine officer looked at the Frenchman coldly and said, “Retreat, Hell! We just got here.” That officer was Capt. Lloyd W. Williams, commanding the 51st Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

Maj Lloyd William Williams

Birth: Jun. 5, 1887 Berryville Clarke County Virginia, USA

Death: Jun. 12, 1918, France

Lloyd W. Williams was born at "Nottingham," in Clarke County on June 5, 1887. The eldest son of Goodwin Hulings and Anne McCormick Williams, he passed his boyhood years in Berryville, attending private and public schools there. He later moved to Washington with his family where he graduated from Western High School. In 1907*, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Shortly after graduation, Williams was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

As a career Marine officer, Williams served in Cuba, the Philippines, Marine Barracks Charleston, S.C. (enroute, 12/1910), sea duty aboard American battleships (aboard the USS Mississippi, BB-23, 7/10/1911), and time at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, DC. Upon the outbreak of trouble in Nicaragua in 1912, he was sent there and saw his first combat action in the capture of the city of Leon.

During his time in Charleston, S.C., he met Selina Ravenel, and, after his return from Nicaragua, he married her, on June 5, 1913, at Spartanburg, South Carolina. Three years later, their only child, Selina, was born. Also in that same year, Williams had risen to the rank of captain.

Immediately after the United States entered World War I, the 5th Marine Division sailed for France. Captain Williams was assigned to command the division's 51st Company in the 2nd Battalion.

On June 1, 1918, Williams' command was sent to support the French army at Belleau Wood. As the Marines arrived, they found French troops retreating through their lines. A French colonel, attempting to acquaint the Americans with the realities of the situation and not trusting his spoken English, scribbled a note to Williams, ordering them to retreat. The Marine officer looked at the Frenchman coldly and said, "Retreat, hell! We just got here." Williams reported the incident to his battalion commander with the following message: "French drawing back through us. French major ordered me to withdraw with him. Told him to 'go to hell'."

On June 11, 1918, Williams led an assault that routed the German defenders at Belleau Wood. Of the 10 officers and 250 men who started the attack, only one officer and 16 enlisted men escaped death or injury. Having received a severe wound, Williams was said to have told corpsmen who approached him, "Don't bother with me. Take care of my good men."

After Williams had been taken to the dressing station in Lucy-le-Bocage, the position came under heavy fire from German artillery, some of which were firing poison gas shells. Despite the shelling, Lt. (USNRF) Orlando H. Petty continued to evacuate and treat the wounded, even after he was knocked to the ground and his gas mask rendered useless by an exploding shell. When the dressing station was destroyed, he personally carried wounded Captain Williams to safety. For these actions, Petty was awarded the Medal of Honor. Despite the rescue, Captain Williams died of his wounds on June 12.

Gene Weltfish

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gene Weltfish (born Regina Weltfish) (August 7, 1902 – August 2, 1980) was an American anthropologist and historian working at Columbia University from 1928 to 1953. She had studied with Franz Boas and was a specialist in the culture and history of the Pawnee people of the Midwest Plains. Her 1965 ethnography, The Lost Universe: Pawnee Life and Culture, is considered the authoritative work on Pawnee culture to this day.

She is also known for the 1943 pamphlet for the U.S. Army, called The Races of Mankind, which she co-wrote with Ruth Benedict. It was intended to educate military personnel about the cultural differences among the peoples of the world in preparation for their fighting with a variety of allies from other cultures. The authors stated that perceived differences between the races are cultural rather than biological. Among the data used in the text was an IQ study from World War I, which found higher scores among some northern Blacks in the United States forces than among some southern Whites. The pamphlet was not widely circulated within the Army, and by the early 1950s, it was banned as subversive.

Engaged in social activism during the 1940s, Weltflish attracted the attention of the FBI, which suspected her (and others on the Left) of being a communist. In 1952 and 1953 she was called to Congress for questioning by two of the Senate sub-committees dedicated to investigating "un-American activity" during the 1950s red scare. Two weeks before appearing at a 1953 hearing, in which she refused to answer questions from staffer attorney Roy Cohn and Senator Joseph McCarthy as to whether she was a communist, her 16-year appointment at Columbia was terminated. She was blacklisted and unable to find an academic position

The Invisible Man

Herbert George Wells

CHAPTER XXI

(from internet transcript)

“This running warmed me to a certain extent, and I went on with a better courage through the maze of less frequented roads that runs thereabout. My back had now become very stiff and sore, my tonsils were painful from the cabman’s fingers, and the skin of my neck had been scratched by his nails; my feet hurt exceedingly, and I was lame from a little cut on one foot. I saw in time a blind man approaching me, and fled limping, for I feared his subtle intuitions. Once or twice accidental collisions occurred, and I left people amazed with unaccountable curses ringing in their ears. Then came something silent and quiet upon my face, and across the square fell a thin veil of slowly falling flakes of snow. I had caught a cold, and do as I would I could not avoid an occasional sneeze. And every dog that came in sight, with its pointing nose and curious sniffing, was a terror to me.
