50 years ago, an intern from UCLA messed up the break-in.

The burglars waited for the signal before breaking into the Watergate Hotel.
The signal would come from the lookout, who was poised across the street, at the Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge. The lookout was in room 723, watching the sixth floor of the Watergate, waiting for the last person in the office to turn out the lights and go home.
Once that office was empty, the plan would be afoot. Five men would sneak into the offices of the Democratic National Committee to steal secrets that their bosses hoped would sway the 1972 presidential election in favor of Richard Nixon.
It was a Friday night in Georgetown. June 16, 1972.
The burglary was set for 9 p.m.
Then 10. Then 11. Then…
The Watergate break-in was postponed until after midnight. And after that, from the burglars’ point of view, everything went wrong. Everybody got caught. Good triumphed over evil. “Gate” became code for “scandal.”
All because a guy sitting in the Democratic Committee office refused to turn out the light and go home.
G. Gordon Liddy, the dirty trickster in charge of the Watergate burglary, once told ABC News how they got caught:
“There was a man working in the back, very, very late. I mean, he stayed and he stayed and he stayed. It’s a Friday night. This was some dedicated Democrat.”
Later, Jim Shaw, a reporter from Columbia Law School News, wrote an article about the guy who stayed late. The headline was “But For Him, Nixon Might Still Be President.”
So who was that man, that “dedicated Democrat” whose stubborn presence in the Watergate 50 years ago lit the fuse to the end of Nixon’s presidency?

In his 1952 Checkers speech, Richard Nixon was one of the first politicians to use the medium of television to defend himself against accusations of wrong-doing.
This speech came during the 1952 presidential election campaign. Senator Nixon was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s vice-presidential running mate. Accused of accepting illegal gifts, Nixon used his television appearance to deny the allegations and outline his personal financial circumstances.
Nixon referred to a cocker spaniel dog his family had been given. Black and white spotted, they called it Checkers. “And you know, the kids, like all kids, love the dog and I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we’re gonna keep it.”
The address thereafter became known as the Checkers speech.

Gordon Liddy, Finance Counsel for the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CRP) and former aide to John Ehrlichman, presented a campaign intelligence plan to CRP's acting chairman Jeb Stuart Magruder, Attorney General John Mitchell, and Presidential Counsel John Dean that involved extensive illegal activities against the Democratic Party. THE WATERGATE SCANDAL
When John Gardner formed Common Cause in August 1970 to act as a citizens' lobby to make government and politics more open and accountable, little did he know that in a few years the times would be ripe for reform. The Watergate scandal which brought down the Nixon presidency entails the break-in of the Democratic Party headquarters in 1972, the cover-up of the break-in, and assorted scandals and improprieties that the investigation subsequently revealed. It was the worst scandal in American history for it was an attempt to subvert the American political process itself. It resulted in Richard Nixon becoming the first American president to ever resign from office, and prompted a wave of electoral and political reform.
On June 17, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, DC. The ensuing investigation uncovered the roles of White House consultant E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, who was employed by the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP). In particular, journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post doggedly pursued the story, especially the possibility that there was a direct link between the burglars and Nixon.

LEWINSKY `KNEW' THEY WERE IN LOVE

Lewinsky's testimony is the most revealing. She was taken with Clinton's stature, his charm, and soon came to believe--truly believe--that Clinton was in love with her. "I just knew he was in love with me," she testified as late as Aug. 26.
Their sexual affair began, Lewinsky testified, on Nov. 15, 1995, after Clinton and Lewinsky made eye contact during several previous ceremonies on the White House lawn. On that night, Clinton invited the intern back into his office and asked, she says, if he could kiss her. She assented.
Clinton, his presidency imperiled, was obviously past whatever it was he felt for Lewinsky by the time he made his mea culpa. Not so Lewinsky. She watched, hoping the president would acknowledge their time together, her role in it, her loyalty. He never did.
"I wanted him to say that I was a nice, decent person and that he was sorry that this had happened because I--I tried to do as much as I could to protect him."
