New CIA chief Hayden sworn in

By Katherine Shrader

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Gen. Michael Hayden was sworn in as CIA director Tuesday and told the officers at the embattled agency they must be competent and cooperative to keep the "central" in Central Intelligence Agency.

Even with those marching orders, Hayden reassured the agency that it remains key to U.S. spy operations and analysis.

In his first day on the job, Hayden told his staff that only the CIA has the "connective tissue" to bring the intelligence community together. A fan of sports metaphors, Hayden compared the CIA to a star player on a football team: critical but part of a whole that must work together.

Hayden addressed the work force for under an hour, taking questions and getting a standing ovation

I'm really sorry about that

I appreciate all your efforts and I'm sorry to just miss the appointment without calling. I've kinda zoned out there for a while. I found out that the VA denied my service connected disability claim so that is pretty discouraging, especially because the doctor set my expectations much differently. If Thursday afternoon is still good for you, I would like to set something up then.

Bryan Kohberger Eyewitness Who Survived Idaho Massacre Says She Has Been Forced to Move 9 Times Since Murders

Dylan Mortensen says that she continues to receive threatening notes and is even followed at times, according to a new court filing

Dylan Mortensen reveals that she and her family have moved nine times in the four years since Bryan Kohberger murdered four of her University of Idaho friends

She revealed this in a new court filing while asking the court to continue blurring her face in soon-to-be-released bodycam footage

Mortensen also claims she has to use an alias at work and continues to receive threatening messages

Next week will mark four years since Bryan Kohberger walked into an off-campus home and brutally stabbed four University of Idaho students to death.

Two of the victims' roommates survived that night, including eyewitness Dylan Mortensen, who is revealing in a new court filing how difficult the past four years have been because of her connection to the tragedy.

Mortensen is describing her experiences in the motion to intervene she filed in hopes a judge will agree to conceal her face in a series of previously unreleased bodycam footage that the court has ruled must be made public.

In that filing, a copy of which was obtained by PEOPLE, Mortensen claims that she continues to receive threats and be labeled a murderer due to false conspiracy theories circulating online, and also details how she has been forced to change her life and daily routines as a result of the public fascination with the case.

Mortensen writes that "one of the biggest changes has been the loss of my ability to feel safe and anonymous," and that as a result of this, she and her family "have had to move nine times in an effort to protect our privacy and safety."

She says these moves were not because she wanted to avoid "public attention," but because she was "trying to find somewhere we could live without constantly worrying about being watched, followed or approached."

Mortensen further claims in the filing that she uses an alias at work and does not give her actual name when meeting new people.

"Even something as simple as ordering packages or receiving deliveries has required me to use a different name because I worry about my real identity being connected to my location," Mortensen writes.

She adds that she also fears being in public because she does not know what an individual's intentions might be when they approach her.

"Since November 2022, I've received numerous unsolicited messages from strangers accusing me of participating in my friends' murders, blaming me for their deaths and making cruel statements about why what they believe should happen to me," the filing states.

According to Mortensen, she has received messages saying "I'll find you," and "Don't let me find out where you live," while another person "expressed hope that I would be stabbed and die a slow, painful death."

She argues in the filing that hours of video with her face will just make her more recognizable and further fuel these unfounded and untrue conspiracy theories.

"I want to be able to work, meet new people, attend concerts, celebrate important moments with friends, and enjoy ordinary experiences without constantly worrying about being recognized or confronted," Mortensen writes.

Mortensen told Kohberger himself how the murders still impact her daily life while delivering her victim impact statement at his sentencing hearing in July 2025.

"I made escape plans everywhere I went. If something happens, how do I get out? What can I use to defend myself?" Mortensen said in her statement, for which she had to sit in one of the prosecutor's chairs because she was too emotional to stand.

"All I can do is scream, because the emotional pain and the grief is too much to handle," she said.

A Nov. 10 hearing is now set to hear arguments on Mortensen's motion.

Prosecutors seek death penalty in Idaho murder case

26 June 2023

Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing four university students in Moscow, Idaho.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, faces four counts of first degree murder in the stabbing deaths of the students in an off-campus house last November.

He was arrested following a six-week manhunt.

A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf last May after he chose to "stand silent" in court.

In new court filing on Monday, prosecutors wrote that "considering all evidence currently known to the State, the State is compelled to file this notice of intent to seek the death penalty".

The top prosecutor, Bill Thompson, wrote in the court filing that this case met the standard for the death penalty as Mr Kohberger's acts were "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel" and "exhibited utter disregard for human life".
