The take-out window for Microsofties is open day and night, Steve and Bob.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 02/28/09 8:46 AM
That damned restaraunt next to the bank hardly even bothered to cook my breakfast. It was digusting. The other waitress that I told about because the order waitress had not come back by said something about the cooks needing to drink coffee. That place always creeps me out anyway with those people in there but goddamnit I am sick of having to eat the same thing all the time.

EVERETT
I owe you an apology.

SHEPPARD
No, Sir, you don't.

EVERETT
I think I have a pretty good idea I would have done the same thing as you did when you found Colonel Sumner. That's what I wanted to tell you.

SHEPPARD
Well, none of that matters right now, Sir.

EVERETT
(fighting back tears)
I'm trying to say… I wish you had been there for me.

SHEPPARD
You're going to be fine, Sir. Once you get back to Earth…

EVERETT
I said what I had to say. Get back to work.

[Sheppard stands to attention and salutes Everett.]

[The Wraith growls in response.]

Now, repeat after me.
Say, "Black is beautiful."
Hey, Jake, this place is a drag, man, huh?
Let's go, come on.
Come on.
You get my hat?

I don't know!
I'm gonna throw you in, anyway.

WEIR
We've just detected a wave of objects approaching the planet.

EVERETT
How many?

TECHNICIAN
A hundred plus.

SHEPPARD
How come they weren't detected by the long-range sensors?

MCKAY
Because they're rocks… Asteroids. The Wraith must have harvested them from this system's asteroid belt and accelerated them towards us from a safe distance. The mainframe's taken this long to determine that they were a threat.

WEIR
Can they do much damage?

MCKAY
Oh, yeah. Even if most of them burn off in the atmosphere, but…that's not why they're doing it.

Jack Burns: Yeah, but basically, you're still an Easterner.

Jerry Bondi: What are you talking about, Jack?

Jack Burns: Oh, it's easy to understand. A westerner likes open country. That means he's got to hate fences. And the more fences there are, the more he hates them.

Jerry Bondi: I've never heard such nonsense in my life.

Jack Burns: It's true though. Have you ever noticed how many fences there're getting to be? And the signs they got on them: no hunting, no hiking, no admission, no trespassing, private property, closed area, start moving, go away, get lost, drop dead! Do you know what I mean?

What?

ZELENKA
The Wraith dart that scanned us. It made its way through the city, scanning for data. The second it was done, it self-destructed.

SHEPPARD
So they beamed into the city?

FORD
Can they do that?

TEYLA
The same technology that is used to sweep people up and into their ships must work in the opposite way.

WEIR
So the pilot of the Wraith dart scanned us, transmitted his information to the hive ships, beamed down here, and destroyed his ship?

ZELENKA
Yes, yes, it seems plausible.

That is precisely the time I started to sense the Wraith continually.

Plot Summary for

The Present with a Future (1943)

It's Christmas morning, and pre-teens Billy and Ginny have expectations of what they will receive as gifts, Ginny a bicycle and Billy a railroad set. Instead, they receive war bonds as a gift from their mother, who explains to them that the war bonds will help what their father is fighting for, and may even pay to save his life is he were wounded. Although she could afford to give them a traditional gift plus the war bonds, she further explains that excessive consumption should not be flaunted during war time, as men and women not only fight for their country, but work in support of the war effort. Bette Davis, who portrays the mother in the just described scene, comes out of character, and as herself, implores the viewer to purchase war bonds and stamps.

KIRK: Time we faced the unpleasant facts.

SPOCK: First, I believe we have about a week before McCoy arrives, but we can't be certain.

KIRK: Arrives where? Honolulu, Boise, San Diego? Why not Outer Mongolia, for that matter?

SPOCK: There is a theory. There could be some logic to the belief that time is fluid, like a river, with currents, eddies, backwash.

KIRK: And the same currents that swept McCoy to a certain time and place might sweep us there, too.

SPOCK: Unless that is true, Captain, we have no hope. Frustrating. Locked in here is the place and moment of his arrival, even the images of what he did. If only I could tie this tricorder in with the ship's computers for just a few moments.

KIRK: Couldn't you build some form of computer aid here?

SPOCK: In this zinc-plated vacuum-tubed culture?

KIRK: Yes, well, it would pose an extremely complex problem in logic, Mister Spock. Excuse me. I sometimes expect too much of you.

Russia Meteor Not Linked to Asteroid Flyby 02.15.13

Update: March 21, 2013

The large fireball (technically, called a "superbolide") observed on the morning of Feb. 15, 2013, in the skies near Chelyabinsk, Russia, was caused by a relatively small asteroid approximately 17 to 20 meters in size (about 18.6 to 21.9 yards) that entered Earth's atmosphere at high speed and at a shallow angle. In doing so, it released a tremendous amount of energy, fragmented at high altitude, and produced a shower of pieces of various sizes that fell to the ground as meteorites.

The fireball was observed not only by video cameras and low-frequency infrasound detectors, but also by U.S. government sensors. Information on the composition of the meteor was also derived from meteorite fragments found in the Chelyabinsk area. With this new data incorporated, the details of the impact have become clearer.

At 9:20:20 a.m. local time (3:20:20 UTC) the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere over the Kazakhstan/Russia border. As it descended through the upper atmosphere, it traveled northwest into Russia. The impactor's trajectory approached Earth along a direction that remained within 15 degrees of the direction of the sun. Asteroid detection telescopes cannot scan regions of the sky this close to the sun. During the atmospheric entry phase, an impacting object is both slowed and heated by atmospheric friction. In front of it, a bow shock develops where atmospheric gases are compressed and heated. Some of this energy is radiated to the object, causing it to ablate, and in most cases, break apart. Fragmentation increases the amount of atmosphere intercepted and so enhances ablation and atmospheric braking. The object disintegrates when the force from the unequal pressures on the front and back sides exceeds its tensile strength. This disruption, or disintegration, usually occurs around the time of maximum brightness.

Thirteen seconds after atmospheric entry, at 9:20:33 a.m. local time (03:20:33 UTC), the fireball, traveling at a velocity of 11.6 miles per second (18.6 kilometers per second), achieved its maximum brightness just south of Chelyabinsk, Russia, at an altitude of 14.5 miles (23.3 kilometers). The approximate effective diameter of the asteroid is estimated to be about 18 meters (about 19.7 yards), and its mass about 11,000 tons. Approximate total impact energy of the Chelyabinsk Fireball, in kilotons of TNT explosives (the energy parameter usually quoted for a fireball), is 440 kilotons. Note that these estimates of total energy, diameter and mass are very approximate. The Chelyabinsk event was an extraordinarily large fireball, the most energetic impact event recognized since the 1908 Tunguska blast in Russian Siberia.

The U.S. government sensor data also provides an approximate path for the Chelyabinsk impactor. A similar calculation can be made from analysis of video records of the event; both methods yield similar results. This path through the atmosphere reinforces that the fireball was not associated with asteroid 2012 DA14, which made a very close flyby of Earth just over 16 hours later. This is known because the two objects approached the Earth from completely different directions and had entirely different orbits around the sun.

This image is from Meteosat-9, allowing for more detail to be seen than in previous images of the meteor trail. The data used here is Level 1.0, meaning that a wider field-of-view is possible - giving a view of the atmospheric limb as well as the Earth.

PRENUM
Dr. Weir… I am Prenum of the Genii. I'm rather surprised. No, astonished that you would have the audacity to come here.

WEIR
You heard our message. The Wraith are at our doorstep.

PRENUM
And we are understandably delighted at the prospect of your demise.

WEIR
That may be so. But still, we have something that you want.

PRENUM
C4.

WEIR
More than that. We have an opportunity for you to test your weapon at no risk to yourselves, and a chance to strike at the Wraith. You have no idea how close they are.

PRENUM
(walking around her)
The Wraith have come, Doctor. Six days ago. Fortunately, we detected their approach and we were able to shut down our reactors in time. Hundreds of lives were lost on the surface, but thousands more were saved because our underground complex went undetected. So, you see, the threat to the Genii has come and gone. So far as the Wraith are concerned, this planet is no longer of interest to them. We have the design that Dr. McKay provided for us, and our prototype bombs are nearly complete.

WEIR
So why would you ask me to come here?

PRENUM
So that we may trade the C4…for your life.

INT—GENII INTERROGATION ROOM

WEIR
I have already offered you the C4.

PRENUM
And you want our prototype weapons in exchange. That's not a bargain for the Genii.

WEIR
What would you do if you had the C4 right now? Incorporate it into your weapons?

PRENUM
Yes.

WEIR
And you would test them.

PRENUM
Of course.

WEIR
I am offering you the chance to test your weapon design on a Wraith hive ship, at no risk to your own people, and still have enough to build dozens more. Now, if you are too proud or too stupid to see—

PRENUM
Be careful, Doctor.

WEIR
I am way past careful. Now, you know what the deal is, and it's a damn good one, so take it or leave it.

WEIR
(to guard)
Give me your radio. Thank you.
(into radio)
This is Weir. I've got the prototypes.

INT—ATLANTIS CHAIR ROOM

[Dozing, McKay hears Weir and wakes up.]

MCKAY
(into radio)
Prototypes. Right.

[He gets up and leaves; Beckett remains in the chair.]

INT—ATLANTIS CORRIDOR

[Sheppard and Teyla's teams are in a fierce firefight with several Wraith soldiers and a Wraith. They take them out with machine guns. Some of the Athosians fall.]

SHEPPARD
Well, that should be the last of them.

INT—WEIR'S OFFICE

[Weir finds Everett at her desk.]

WEIR
Colonel?

EVERETT
Well done, Doctor. I—I have to admit it, I am impressed.

WEIR
Well, maybe there's hope for me yet.

EVERETT
I'm in your chair.

[He stands.]

WEIR
I thought it was your chair.

EVERETT
Yeah, well, I…I don't sit much. I was just going over the…

[McKay enters.]

MCKAY
We have a problem.

EVERETT
We have a lot of problems.

MCKAY
I just finished examining the Genii nuclear devices. They're incomplete. I could finish it, but it's going to take time.

EVERETT
How much time?

MCKAY
About a day.

EVERETT
We don't have a day, Doctor.

MCKAY
Well, like I said, we have a problem.

EXT—ATLANTIS, DAY

INT—MCKAY'S LAB

[McKay and Zelenka work on the Genii bombs. Beckett enters.]

BECKETT
You want to see me, Rodney?

MCKAY
Yes, yes. I need something to keep me awake.

ZELENKA
Yeah, me too.

BECKETT
I've already given you something.

MCKAY
We're building nuclear bombs here. Staying awake is sort of a prerequisite.

Visual Studio 2010 launch set for April 12

Visual Studio 2010, the launch of which Microsoft delayed last month so it has time to do tester-requested tweaks, will be released on April 12.

Rob Caron, Microsoft's marketing communications manager for Developer and User Experience Runtimes and Tools, made a short announcement on his MSDN blog Wednesday.

A second beta of the next release of Visual Studio, which gives developers a graphical interface for coding, was released in October and the product was scheduled for full launch on March 22. However, beta testing gave Microsoft a lot of feedback about the software's performance issues.

Comet to Make Close Flyby of Red Planet in October 2014 03.05.13

March 21, 2013 Update:

New observations of comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) have allowed NASA's Near-Earth Object Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. to refine the comet's orbit.

Using observations through March 15, 2013, the latest orbital plot places the comet's closest approach to Mars a little farther out than previously estimated, at about 73,000 miles (118,000 kilometers) from the surface of the Red Planet. The impact probability has decreased accordingly; it is now about 1 in 8,000. The latest estimated time for close approach to Mars is about 11:45 a.m. PDT (18:45 UTC) on Oct. 19, 2014. At the time of closest approach, the comet will be on the sunward side of the planet. The comet and its tail should be a spectacular sight in the pre-dawn Martian sky just before closest approach, as well as in the post-dusk sky just after closest approach.

C/2013 A1

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) is an Oort cloud comet discovered on 3 January 2013 by Robert H. McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory

Encounter with Mars

The comet will pass extremely close to Mars on 19 October 2014; there is even a small possibility that it could impact the planet.

Estimates for the diameter of the nucleus have varied from 3 up to 50 km, meaning the energy of impact might reach 20 billion megatons at the upper limit.
