Identification refers to the automatic, subconscious psychological process in which an individual becomes like or closely associates themselves with another person by adopting one or more of the others' perceived personality traits, physical attributes, or some other aspect of their identity. The concept of identification was founded by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in the 1920’s, and has since been expanded on and applied in psychology, social studies, media studies, and literary and film criticism. In literature, identification most often refers to the audience identifying with a fictional character, however it can also be employed as a narrative device whereby one character identifies with another character within the text itself.

I mean sure, I think now remembering what I had wrote earlier in my blog about the cornfield. I was on that flight, while everyone else had ducked and covered and I was still sitting up so I could maintain custody of the prisoner, then everything went kind of fuzzy for a second, even more so, and then the quietness was staggering. I have written about that before, that sense in my mind of sudden quietness, and that was me sitting precisely as I had been on the airplane and there was nothing around me but tall stalks of corn and I was still sitting in the same airplane seat but I was all alone in that cornfield and it was suddenly blaring and maddenly blaring quietness. It drives me crazy now just trying to thing again about that.

Q. Mr. President, I'm Mary Thompson from Las Cruces, New Mexico—State representative. I work at White Sands, and among the people that I work with at White Sands there's a great deal of concern about security in this country and of the information that's leaving our borders. And we wondered what plans you have to strengthen our security and to retain the information in this country that we wish to keep here.
The President. I think you're talking about security having to do with things that would be of aid to an adversary—technical information and so forth. Well, we have done much. Some of the things that were so widely hailed in the media as quarrels between us and our friends in Europe, our allies and so forth, actually were negotiations that have resulted in more unity than we've ever had with regard to joint control of that kind of sales or dissemination of information and the actual hardware. And we have a basic agreement with all of them.
We're very firm about that here, but security is one problem no matter how much you try to police something. We have just intercepted, as you know, a great shipment that was almost on its way through another country to the Soviet Union. And fortunately, our intelligence apparatus worked well enough that we intercepted and caught it there. It would have been of great assistance to anyone in improving their military capabilities. And we are working at that, and I think that our net is getting tighter and tighter in that regard. But we're very much aware of the problem, and we're not going to throw away any of these advantages.
My, it's a whole new world, isn't it, with technology? I remember when we were talking about scrap iron coming back to us in World War II as shrapnel.

THE PURPOSE of our ceremony today is the swearing in of the Deputy Director of the CIA.
I will have some remarks about him in just a moment.
But at this point we will go forward with the ceremony and he will be sworn in by Judge Sirica of the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia, and General Cushman's wife will hold the Bible.
[At this point Judge John J. Sirica administered the oath of office.]
Ladies and gentlemen, I want to say a personal word with regard to General Cushman.
Usually, as you know, I am not present except for the swearing in of the chairmen or the top directors of the agencies, but this is a special case and an exception for reasons that all of you will understand.
Back in the year 1957, on the basis of a recommendation of Admiral Radford,1 General Cushman, then Colonel Cushman, came to my office as Vice President as my Executive Assistant. At that time there was no allocation in the funds for the Vice president for that kind of staff work. So I gave him the responsibility as my Executive Assistant and particularly in the field of national security affairs.

He did that job in a very effective way. And as a result of doing it so effectively, I gave him his added responsibilities, that of running my office and a few other things which, of course, he will well remember.
But I think you will note that he has a very distinguished career in the Marine Corps and World War II, then in Vietnam where he has been our top commander of the Marines in the I Corps area near the DMZ [demilitarized zone].
He is one of America's most distinguished men who has served us both in war and in peace and now he takes on a new assignment in the field of intelligence--new for him in the sense of this particular duty, but not new for him in the sense of his past experience, because in the Marine Corps he had a lot of valuable experience, as Director Helms pointed out, in the intelligence field.
What really convinced me, however, that he was fitted for this responsibility, was not his service in World War II, which was distinguished, not his work with me simply in the national security field, which was distinguished, and not his work in the Vietnam war area, but a personal factor entered into it.
I recall I had a very difficult assignment at one point when I was Vice President. There came a time when it was necessary to move half of my small staff from one building to another, from the Senate Ofrice Building over to the Capitol. As is usually the case, half the staff that had to be moved didn't want to be moved.
I knew that I was not able to handle that very, very difficult task of forcing them to move, and knowing that General Cushman, then Colonel Cushman, as a Marine had had experience in tough tasks, I just turned it over to him; I delegated it to him.
He accomplished it, but he came in to see me afterwards and wiped his brow and said that he had carried out the orders and that he just had one observation to make: that it was more difficult to move six secretaries from the Senate Office Building to the Capitol than it was to move a whole division of Marines across the Pacific.
With that kind of experience and knowing the great number of fine secretaries that you have, Mr. Helms, in the agency, I know we have here a topnotch administrator with a fine background in the military and also in intelligence.
This organization, the CIA, has a distinguished record of being bipartisan in character. It is a highly professional group. It will remain that in this administration, and General Cushman is one who is in the great tradition of service to his Nation without regard to any partisan considerations.
I am delighted that he is going to work with Mr. Helms in this capacity.

Pierre Joseph Thuot (born May 19, 1955) is a retired United States Navy captain and NASA astronaut.
Born on May 19, 1955, in Groton, Connecticut, Thuot considers Fairfax, Virginia and New Bedford, Massachusetts to be his hometowns.
Thuot was a mission specialist on the crew of STS-49, the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on May 7, 1992. During that mission, Thuot, along with astronaut Richard Hieb, performed three spacewalks which resulted in the capture and repair of the stranded Intelsat VI F3 communications satellite.

Pierre J. Thuot was 14 years old when he saw Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. Nearly 18 years later he can still recall how he felt that July day in 1969. "I said, 'Boy, that would be fantastic to do that.' "
In July the 31-year-old Thuot (pronounced "Thu it") stepped closer to his dream of manning a space flight when he was officially certified as an astronaut by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Now based at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Thuot returned home last week to Fairfax, where his childhood dream began, making a few unexpected stops at area schools just before the holiday vacation. On visits to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Fairfax High, Langley High and Franklin Sherman Elementary, Thuot showed a 20-minute NASA film on the space program and spoke to students about the future of space missions in the wake of the Challenger disaster.
A 1973 graduate of Fairfax High, Thuot went on to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he majored in physics. After graduating 30th in his class, Thuot trained at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in St. Mary's County, Md., and later became a flight instructor there. He also earned a master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California.
With the recommendation of the Navy, NASA accepted Thuot as an astronaut candidate in 1985. In July 1986 he completed a one-year training and evaluation program that qualified him to assist pilots and commanders as a mission specialist on future space shuttle missions. He joins about 80 other astronauts.

University may pay millions for computer recalibration

The imminent arrival of the year 2000 isn't causing much celebration among some university administrators. Computer systems used by many of the university's administrative departments have already begun to fall victim to a widespread glitch known as "the 2000 problem," Vice President for Computing and Information Technology Ira Fuchs said. The problem occurs when older computer systems, like many of those the university uses, try to do calculations involving dates after Dec. 31, 1999. Most of these systems only use the last two digits of a year, and therefore cannot distinguish between years such as 1996 and 2096.
It may cost the university between $800,000 and $5 million to correct the 2000 problem, Associate Provost Georgia Nugent '73 said. The expenses of fixing the 2000 problem have been grouped with a larger effort to update the university's computer systems, Fuchs said. That plan, known as "Partnership 2000," may cost $50 million, he added. Under Partnership 2000, all university departments will evaluate their computer systems and upgrade them
