SPOKANE, Wash. — Congress announced on Friday that Gleason will receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Jan. 15 in a special ceremony on Capitol Hill.
Gleason earned the honor through his fight to raise ALS awareness and improve the lives of patients through his foundation, Team Gleason.
The Senate signed legislation in June 2018 to award Gleason the medal and the U.S. House of Representatives passed it in December. President Trump then signed the legislation to award Gleason the medal one year ago.
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) co-sponsored the legislation to award Gleason with the medal.
Gleason, who has ALS, played football for the New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008. Before his diagnosis and NFL career, he was a standout football player for Washington State University and Gonzaga Preparatory School.

He is the father of baby girl Gray, who has born in October 2018, and her older brother, River.
Gleason is the first former NFL player to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. Other recipients of the honor include Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison and the Dalai Lama.
"It's pretty much totally insane that I will be receiving the congressional gold medal,” Gleason told KREM in August. “Given that the list of past honorees includes the Dalai Lama, Robert Frost, Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison and other huge humanitarian giants in history, it's hard to fathom being on the same list.”

In the days before the outbreak of the virus, Karl Cowperthwaite (Fred Armisen) is a secret cannibal who goes on a date with Zoe (Leighton Meester), but she fakes a phone call to escape their terrible dinner. When Karl walks his dog Zeus to find some bullion for his cannibalistic dish, the police arrive at his apartment, but Karl escapes and, after killing an SUV driver (Martin Short), takes the SUV to Juárez, Mexico. There, he starts a home painting business to hide his murders. As he prepares to kill again, the man he is painting notices a severed head in the refrigerator, forcing Karl to escape to a motel, where the police find him and arrest him for murder and desecration. In prison, Karl's next victim, Javi, falls ill from the virus. As time passes, all of the inmates and guards die from the virus, leaving only Karl and a guard named Martinez to bond. Eventually, Martinez tells Karl that it is last day, so he gives him two months' worth of food and a noose. Karl kills him and escapes his cell but cannot escape the prison. Before Karl attempts suicide with the noose, Tandy and Todd find him in the middle of their search for Jasper.

To the Senate:
I return herewith without approval Senate bill No. 1726, entitled "An act granting a pension to Augustus Field Stevens."
It appears that this claimant enlisted August 21, 1861, and was discharged on the 3d day of October, 1861, after a service of less than two months, upon a medical certificate of disability which represented him as "incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of general debility, advanced age, unfit for service before entering."
His claim is not based upon any wound or injury, but he alleges that he contracted chronic diarrhea or dysentery while in the service. The committee to whom the bill was referred by the Senate admit that "there is a quantity of contradictory testimony, biased in about equal proportion for and against the claimant."
His claim was rejected by the Pension Bureau in 1882 and again in 1885, after a special examination concerning the facts, on the ground that the claimant had failed to show any pensionable disability contracted while he was in the service.
The medical certificate upon which he was discharged makes no mention of the disorders of which the applicant for pension now complains, but contains other statements which demonstrate that no allowance should be made to him by way of pension, unless such pension is to be openly and confessedly regarded as a mere charity, or unless the medical certificate made at the time of discharge, with the patient under observation, is to be, without any allegation to that effect, impeached.
I am not prepared either to gratuitously set at naught two determinations of the Pension Bureau, one very lately made after a special examination, and especially when the evidence produced before the committee to reverse the Bureau's action is admitted to be "contradictory" and "biased in about equal proportion for and against the claimant."

BOYCE: Boyce here.
Captain Christopher PIKE: Drop by my cabin, Doctor. (Boyce enters with bag) What's that? I didn't say there's anything wrong with me.
BOYCE: I understand we picked up a distress signal.
PIKE: That's right. Unless we get anything more positive on it, it seems to me the condition of our own crew takes precedent. I'd like to log the ship's doctor's opinion, too.
BOYCE: Oh, I concur with yours, definitely.
PIKE: Good. I'm glad you do, because we're going to stop first at the Vega Colony and replace anybody who needs hospitalisation and also. What the devil are you putting in there, ice?
BOYCE: Who wants a warm martini?
PIKE: What makes you think I need one?
BOYCE: Sometimes a man'll tell his bartender things he'll never tell his doctor. What's been on your mind, Chris, the fight on Rigel Seven?
PIKE: Shouldn't it be? My only yeoman and two others dead, seven injured.
BOYCE: Was there anything you personally could have done to prevent it?
PIKE: Oh, I should have smelled trouble when I saw the swords and the armour. Instead of that, I let myself get trapped in that deserted fortress and attacked by one of their warriors.
BOYCE: Chris, you set standards for yourself no one could meet. You treat everyone on board like a human being except yourself, and now you're tired and you
PIKE: You bet I'm tired. You bet. I'm tired of being responsible for two hundred and three lives. I'm tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn't, and who's going on the landing party and who doesn't, and who lives and who dies. Boy, I've had it, Phil.
BOYCE: To the point of finally taking my advice, a rest leave?
PIKE: To the point of considering resigning.
BOYCE: And do what?
PIKE: Well, for one thing, go home. Nice little town with fifty miles of parkland around it. Remember I told you I had two horses, and we used to take some food and ride out all day.
BOYCE: Ah, that sounds exciting. Ride out with a picnic lunch every day.
PIKE: I said that's one place I might go. I might go into business on Regulus or on the Orion colony.
BOYCE: You, an Orion trader, dealing in green animal women, slaves?
PIKE: The point is this isn't the only life available. There's a whole galaxy of things to choose from.
BOYCE: Not for you. A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head-on, and licks it, or he turns his back on it and starts to wither away.
PIKE: Now you're beginning to talk like a doctor, bartender.
BOYCE: Take your choice. We both get the same two kinds of customers. The living and the dying.
SPOCK [on monitor]: Mister Spock here. We're intercepting a follow-up message, sir. There are crash survivors on Talos.

According to Wikipedia the number of ALS cases *worldwide* in 2015 was about 222,000
That's out of 8 *billion* people
AND a recent charity drive recently raised reportedly over $200 million dollars
And they still haven't found a cure
