Encyclopædia Britannica

Enrico Fermi

Italian-American physicist

Enrico Fermi, (born Sept. 29, 1901, Rome, Italy—died Nov. 28, 1954, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), Italian-born American scientist who was one of the chief architects of the nuclear age. He developed the mathematical statistics required to clarify a large class of subatomic phenomena, explored nuclear transformations caused by neutrons, and directed the first controlled chain reaction involving nuclear fission. He was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize for Physics, and the Enrico Fermi Award of the U.S. Department of Energy is given in his honour. Fermilab, the National Accelerator Laboratory, in Illinois, is named for him, as is fermium, element number 100.

Early life and education

Fermi’s father, Alberto Fermi, was a chief inspector of the government railways; his mother was Ida de Gattis, a schoolteacher. In 1918 Enrico Fermi won a scholarship to the University of Pisa’s distinguished Scuola Normale Superiore, where his knowledge of recent physics benefited even the professors. After receiving a doctorate in 1922, Fermi used fellowships from the Italian Ministry of Public Instruction and the Rockefeller Foundation to study in Germany under Max Born, at the University of Göttingen, and in the Netherlands under Paul Ehrenfest, at the State University of Leiden.

European career

Fermi returned home to Italy in 1924 to a position as a lecturer in mathematical physics at the University of Florence. His early research was in general relativity, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics. Examples of gas degeneracy (appearance of unexpected phenomena) had been known, and some cases were explained by Bose-Einstein statistics, which describes the behaviour of subatomic particles known as bosons. Between 1926 and 1927, Fermi and the English physicist P.A.M. Dirac independently developed new statistics, now known as Fermi-Dirac statistics, to handle the subatomic particles that obey the Pauli exclusion principle; these particles, which include electrons, protons, neutrons (not yet discovered), and other particles with half-integer spin, are now known as fermions. This was a contribution of exceptional importance to atomic and nuclear physics, particularly in this period when quantum mechanics was first being applied.

This seminal work brought Fermi an invitation in 1926 to become a full professor at the University of Rome. Shortly after Fermi took up his new position in 1927, Franco Rasetti, a friend from Pisa and another superb experimentalist, joined Fermi in Rome, and they began to gather a group of talented students about them. These included Emilio Segrè, Ettore Majorana, Edoardo Amaldi, and Bruno Pontecorvo, all of whom had distinguished careers. Fermi, a charismatic, energetic, and seemingly infallible figure, clearly was the leader—so much so that his colleagues called him “the Pope.”

In 1929 Fermi, as Italy’s first professor of theoretical physics and a rising star in European science, was named by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini to his new Accademia d’Italia, a position that included a substantial salary (much larger than that for any ordinary university position), a uniform, and a title (“Excellency”).

During the late 1920s, quantum mechanics solved problem after problem in atomic physics. Fermi, earlier than most others, recognized that the field was becoming exhausted, however, and he deliberately changed his focus to the more primitively developed field of nuclear physics. Radioactivity had been recognized as a nuclear phenomenon for almost two decades by this time, but puzzles still abounded. In beta decay, or the expulsion of a negative electron from the nucleus, energy and momentum seemed not to be conserved. Fermi made use of the neutrino, an almost undetectable particle that had been postulated a few years earlier by the Austrian-born physicist Wolfgang Pauli, to fashion a theory of beta decay in which balance was restored. This led to recognition that beta decay was a manifestation of the weak force, one of the four known universal forces (the others being gravitation, electromagnetism, and the strong force).

In 1933 the French husband-and-wife team of Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie discovered artificial radioactivity caused by alpha particles (helium nuclei). Fermi quickly reasoned that the neutral neutron, found a year earlier by the English physicist James Chadwick, would be an even better projectile with which to bombard charged nuclei in order to initiate such reactions. With his colleagues, Fermi subjected more than 60 elements to neutron bombardment, using a Geiger-Müller counter to detect emissions and conducting chemical analyses to determine the new radioactive isotopes produced. Along the way, they found by chance that neutrons that had been slowed in their velocity often were more effective. When testing uranium they observed several activities, but they could not interpret what occurred. Some scientists thought that they had produced transuranium elements, namely elements higher than uranium at atomic number 92. The issue was not resolved until 1938, when the German chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann experimentally, and the Austrian physicists Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch theoretically, cleared the confusion by revealing that the uranium had split and the several radioactivities detected were from fission fragments.

Fermi was little interested in politics, yet he grew increasingly uncomfortable with the fascist politics of his homeland. When Italy adopted the anti-Semitic policies of its ally, Nazi Germany, a crisis occurred, for Fermi’s wife, Laura, was Jewish. The award of the 1938 Nobel Prize for Physics serendipitously provided the excuse for the family to travel abroad, and the prize money helped to establish them in the United States.

American career

Settling first in New York City and then in Leonia, N.J., Fermi began his new life at Columbia University, in New York City. Within weeks of his arrival, news that uranium could fission astounded the physics community. Scientists had known for many years that nuclei could disgorge small chunks, such as alpha particles, beta particles, protons, and neutrons, either in natural radioactivity or upon bombardment by a projectile. However, they had never seen a nucleus split almost in two. The implications were both exciting and ominous, and they were recognized widely. When uranium fissioned, some mass was converted to energy, according to Albert Einstein’s famous formula E = mc2. Uranium also emitted a few neutrons in addition to the larger fragments. If these neutrons could be slowed to maximize their efficiency, they could participate in a controlled chain reaction to produce energy; that is, a nuclear reactor could be built. The same neutrons traveling at their initial high speed could also participate in an uncontrolled chain reaction, liberating an enormous amount of energy through many generations of fission events, all within a fraction of a second; that is, an atomic bomb could be built.

Working primarily with the Hungarian-born physicist Leo Szilard, Fermi constructed experimental arrangements of neutron sources and pieces of uranium. They sought to determine the necessary size of a structure, the best material to use as a moderator to slow neutrons, the necessary purity of all components (so neutrons would not be lost), and the best substance for forming control rods that could absorb neutrons to slow or stop the reaction. Fermi visited Washington, D.C., to alert the U.S. Navy about their research, but his guarded enthusiasm led only to a tiny grant. It was left to Einstein’s letter to U.S. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt about the potential of an atomic bomb, in the summer of 1939, to initiate continuing government interest, and even that grew slowly.

When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, nuclear research was consolidated to some degree. Fermi had built a series of “piles,” as he called them, at Columbia. Now he moved to the University of Chicago, where he continued to construct piles in a space under the stands of the football field. The final structure, a flattened sphere about 7.5 metres (25 feet) in diameter, contained 380 tons of graphite blocks as the moderator and 6 tons of uranium metal and 40 tons of uranium oxide as the fuel, distributed in a careful pattern. The pile went “critical” on Dec. 2, 1942, proving that a nuclear reaction could be initiated, controlled, and stopped. Chicago Pile-1, as it was called, was the first prototype for several large nuclear reactors constructed at Hanford, Wash., where plutonium, a man-made element heavier than uranium, was produced. Plutonium also could fission and thus was another route to the atomic bomb.

In 1944 Fermi became an American citizen and moved to Los Alamos, N.M., where physicist J. Robert Oppenheimerled the Manhattan Project’s laboratory, whose mission was to fashion weapons out of the rare uranium-235 isotope and plutonium. Fermi was an associate director of the lab and headed one of its divisions. When the first plutonium bomb was tested on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, N.M., Fermi ingeniously made a rough calculation of its explosive energy by noting how far slips of paper were blown from the vertical.

After the war ended, Fermi accepted a permanent position at the University of Chicago, where he influenced another distinguished group of physicists, including Harold Agnew, Owen Chamberlin, Geoffrey Chew, James Cronin, Jerome Friedman, Richard Garwin, Murray Gell-Mann, Marvin Goldberger, Tsung-Dao Lee, Jack Steinberger, and Chen Ning Yang. As in Rome, Fermi recognized that his current pursuits, now in nuclear physics, were approaching a condition of maturity. He thus redirected his sights on reactions at higher energies, a field called elementary particle physics, or high-energy physics.

Since the war, science had been recognized in the United States as highly important to national security. Fermi largely avoided politics, but he did agree to serve on the General Advisory Committee (GAC), which counseled the five commissioners of the Atomic Energy Commission. In response to the revelation in September 1949 that the Soviet Union had detonated an atomic bomb, many Americans urged the government to try to construct a thermonuclear bomb, which can be orders of magnitude more powerful. GAC was publicly unanimous in opposing this step, mostly on technical grounds, with Fermi and Isidor Rabi going further by introducing an ethical question into so-called “objective” advice. Such a bomb, they wrote, “becomes a weapon which in practical effect is almost one of genocide…. It is necessarily an evil thing considered in any light.” U.S. Pres. Harry S. Truman decided otherwise, and a loyal Fermi went for a time back to Los Alamos to assist in the development of fusion weapons, however with the hope that they might prove impossible to construct.

Fermi primarily investigated subatomic particles, particularly pi mesons and muons, after returning to Chicago. He was also known as a superb teacher, and many of his lectures are still in print. During his later years he raised a question now known as the Fermi paradox: “Where is everybody?” He was asking why no extraterrestrial civilizations seemed to be around to be detected, despite the great size and age of the universe. He pessimistically thought that the answer might involve nuclear annihilation.

Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) is the United States Navy's program that developed manned helicopters that assist the surface fleet in anti-submarine warfare.

The purpose of LAMPS was to scout outside the limits of a fleet's radar and sonar range to detect and track enemy submarines or missile-equipped escort ships and feed the real-time data back to their LAMPS mothership. They also have the capability to directly engage enemy targets with depth charges or torpedoes or indirectly engage the enemy by coordinating fleet assets on site.

The Real World

Often over recent years I have watched that television series rebroadcast episodes trying to remember the first time I actually watched the episode.

I can vaguely recall that I was actively following that television series back in the year 1990 and through the 1990s. For example, I can recall wearing a t-shirt with "Bart Simpson" on it and I'm pretty sure that was the year 1990.

So in recent years I have hoped that if I could recall actually watching a specific episode then maybe I could also unlock the theoretical memory locked in my mind.

My theory is that human memory is based on association. My hunch being that if I can associate one event that happened at a specific time maybe that could remind me of other memory.

As my hypothesis progresses about my supposed locked memory I consider a point that recently seems to be a milestone.

Not too long ago I decided that the divergence point is not 19 July 1989, as I began to theorize a few years earlier (although that was a type of divergence point I still theorize) but was actually 13 June 2005, or maybe the following day just after midnight. I am attached to the 13th because of documentation I have.

So anyway, to make a long story short, as I theorized about Kerry Burgess 1989 and the following versions Kerry Burgess 1994-A and Kerry Burgess 1994-B I sit here now as Kerry Burgess 2005.

A version of the original Kerry Burgess, himself a human being cloned of another human being, and most likely created by means unbelievable to you the dullard reader of this blog prior to June 2005.

A process created by the version of Kerry Burgess who existed before 13 June 2005 and who created me, Kerry Burgess 2005, as a contingency knowing they would probably kill him for going to the police for help.

They could have decided not to kill me (that preceding version of me, this version I am now) but they did kill Kerry Burgess. Then I returned as the version I am now. My theory is that the memory I am trying to regain has never existed physically in my human brain after I became alive in June 2005 after they had killed my predecessor. My theory is there is some force out there now that is creating thoughts in my mind because It knows the truth about the past and It does not know how differentiate between the different physical versions of Kerry Burgess, including the original human being the first Kerry Burgess was cloned from.

So I am Kerry Burgess 2005 and there is something that must be done.

WEIR: It is a relief just seeing a friendly face.

O'NEILL: Yeah, I was going for friendly.

WEIR: This is all very confusing for me.

(She looks around the room. Although none of the other patients are very close by, she leans forward and speaks quietly.)

WEIR: The last thing I remember, I was in Atlantis and everything was fine, and next thing I know, I wake up here.

O'NEILL (awkwardly): Everything was ... fine in ... Atlantis?

(Elizabeth doesn't notice his hesitation.)

WEIR: The problem is my memory. I have no memory of coming back. I don't know if I came through the Stargate, or aboard the Daedalus, or ... (She trails off, finally noticing the look of confusion on his face.) What?

(Jack shakes his head.)

O'NEILL: Oh, um ... Doctor Weir, I'm not quite sure I'm qualified to be in this conversation.

WEIR: Oh, please. You ran Stargate Command. You are probably the most qualified person on this planet.

O'NEILL (dubiously): Yeah ... OK.

How many people out there are really following along here?

Five? Twenty?

I wonder about that as I can vaguely hear that stadium nearby and the crowd and that depresses me.

Los Angeles Times

Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Shuttle Landing Draws Big Crowd : Space: Fans and first-timers flock to witness what may be the last Columbia touchdown in Southern California until 1995.

November 02, 1993 SHARON MOESER SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE — It drops out of the sky like a brick. And in the best of conditions you might get to count your view of it in minutes rather than seconds.

But there they were, up before the sun, the fanatics and the first-timers. Equipped with blankets, chairs and cameras, about 35,000 people braved the desert chill Monday morning to watch the space shuttle Columbia return to Earth after a 14-day mission.

Several records were set during the mission, including the longest flight in the history of the shuttle program and the first animal dissection in space. Yet it was not those records that drew hordes of people to this air base on the edge of the Mojave Desert.

Instead it was an opportunity to see a Southern California shuttle landing, perhaps the last until 1995.

Like many people, Maureen Reeve said she, her husband and four children came to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Facility at Edwards AFB on Monday to watch Columbia land because it's "probably the last one for who knows how long."

Pauline Weiss and Will Poole have lived in a small town next to Edwards AFB for four years but never before took the time to watch an orbiter touch down. Monday morning they were among the privileged. With VIP passes secured from a relative who works at NASA, the couple stood on the roof of a Dryden building for a bird's-eye view of the 7:06 a.m. touchdown.

Spectators in RVs, some who had come from as far as Washington and Arizona, began arriving at Edwards AFB on Sunday. Early Monday thousands of cars streamed in, backing up traffic as far as a mile from the base's heaviest traveled west entrance gate.

Because of road construction near the shuttle viewing site, spectators were allowed access to NASA's hillside viewing area, an area normally reserved for invited guests.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance," said Yorba Linda resident George Lawson, who watched his first shuttle landing with his wife from atop his RV. "If you see it a second time that's something the good Lord gives you."

Watching Columbia land brought tears to the eyes of Bob and Jan Baxter, Washington residents. "To think we can send people out like that and then bring them back to one little spot on Earth, it makes you feel good about where you live," Bob Baxter said.

Charles Wiggins and Toni Moore consider themselves groupies. They drove with two friends from Tucson, the third time they've done so. They left Sunday and headed back home Monday.

"People in space, it's something that's special to our generation," Moore said.

BALDWIN: Lieutenant Colonel, I'm curious, your perspective on, you know, Clarissa's point, talking about these fighters who the U.S. will be assisting. How integral our role will be over there moving forward.

LT. COL. SCOTT MANN (RET.), U.S. ARMY SPECIAL FORCES: Yes, look, thanks for having me, Brooke.

BALDWIN: Yes.

MANN: The first thing that I'd like to say is, I do think - I do think it's a step in the right direction to be working locally like this.

BALDWIN: OK.

MANN: That's what ISIS does. ISIS works locally. They work from the bottom up. And that's how we can have an effect as well. The other thing I want to point out is, special ops, especially like green berets, you know, they're advisers. And advising is a combat mission. And I think to call it anything other than combat is a misnomer. It means you train them -

BALDWIN: Say that again, advising is a combat mission.

MANN: Advising is a combat mission. And to characterize it as anything else, when we have troops out there working by, with and through indigenous forces like the Kurds and the Sunni Arabs is disingenuous. I've been an advisor my entire life and I can tell you these guys, when they do this, it is a very, very vulnerable mission because they do go out with them, they advise them and they assist them in combat. And to characterize it as anything other than that I think is a disservice to what the guys are doing. And, frankly, it sets the American people up for a failure because what they're doing is a very dangerous combat mission. It's necessary. And we need to be doing it but we need to call it what it is, Brooke.

BALDWIN: On that point, let me just toss to this piece of sound. This was our White House correspondent Jim Acosta sort of drilling down on that point moments ago with the White House spokesperson Josh Earnest. Here you go.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JIM ACOSTA, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: The question that the Americans people have, which is, this president, this White House, the officials here at this White House have repeatedly, over and over again, made it clear to the American people that there would be no combat role for U.S. troops fighting ISIS. That appears to be changing. Not only is there this announcement that you're talking about today, which you say they won't be involved in a combat role, but you're not ruling out the possibility that they may be involved in some sort of combat operation, but on the Iraq side, you have Pentagon official this week saying we're in combat. So I'm just - it would be great if we could just have a moment of clarity here and you could acknowledge that, yes, this mission is changing. It is not what it was said it was going to be at the onset of this. I mean I just think that -

JOSH EARNEST, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: To say that -

(CROSS TALK)

EARNEST: To say that, Jim, would only confuse the situation. The fact of the matter is, the mission that the commander-in-chief has given our military personnel in Iraq and now in Syria, is a train, advise and assist mission. And we have gone to great lengths to make clear that that is in no way diminishes the amount of risk that our men and women in uniform will be facing.

[14:10:03] We've also been quite clear that there actually have been situations where combat boots have been on the ground inside of Syria. We've been quit candid about that. The president ordered a mission involving U.S. military personnel putting boots on the ground inside of Syria to try to rescue American hostages that had been taken by ISIL. That occurred more than - more than a year ago.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BALDWIN: You care to reiterate your point, colonel?

MANN: Yes, exactly. I mean you can hear it right there. It's just this type of work, where you're working with surrogate forces, it's dangerous work and it's necessary. It's what ISIS does. It's how they're so effective. They go local. In my book, "Game Changers," I talk about doing this in Afghanistan, in Iraq. It's a very effective way, less blood, less treasure to fight these guys. However, we need to be clear with the American people and with everyone that's watching this that this type of advisory work is combat. There are boots on the ground. And our men and women are at risk when they're doing this. And it's just the way it goes. It is a combat role.

SFOR INFORMER

Bridge over troubled waters

by Capt. Bente Ravn

First published in SFOR Informer #11, May 28, 1997

Mostar - The war in Bosnia and Hercegovina (BiH) caused much pain and destruction. Many people lost family, friends, and homes and some cities became divided. One of the best known of these is Mostar, the largest city in Hercegovina with 109,000 inhabitants. In 1522 Mostar became the headquarters of the Ottoman administration of Hercegovina. Many military missions against Venetian cities were launched from the city, which came under Austrian control from 1878-1918, and then became part of Yugoslavia. Today it is a part of BiH.

According to a pre-war consensus, Mostar’s population consisted of 20 % Bosnian-Serbs, 40 % Bosniacs and 40 % Bosnian-Croats. There are practically no longer any Bosnian-Serbs in the city, they are living in the mountains south and east of the city. Bosniacs, make up 55 % of the city’s inhabitants live east of the river. Bosnian-Croats make up the remaining 45 %, and live on the west side of the Neretva.

Mostar has a story to tell. It is the story of the Old Bridge, an elegant single span arch built over the river Neretva by the Ottoman Turks. Mostar is an old city, established in the 15th century when a small settlement began to form around an old Roman wooden bridge over the Neretva river, but the name Mostar comes from the old white limestone bridge Stari Most (most means bridge, and stari means old - hence Mostar) which was finished in 1566 after nine years construction for the Ottoman emperor Sultan Sleiman the Magnificent.

On November 9, 1993, during bitter civil war in the city, the bridge was shelled by a Bosnian Croat tank from Mt. Hum. One of its last roles had been to allow Muslim defenders of the "left bank" cross the river and take supplies to their supporters and the population that had remained there. It withstood many centuries, but it could not survive this concentrated effort to demolish it. After several direct hits, this magnificent piece of history crashed into the waters below.

SPOCK: Might be interesting to see what they look like if I can locate where that voice is coming from. (McCoy and Scott enter)

MCCOY: Balok's message. It was heard all over the ship.

KIRK: Captain to crew. Those of you who have served for long on this vessel have encountered alien lifeforms. You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there's no such thing as the unknown, only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood. In most cases we have found that intelligence capable of a civilisation is capable of understanding peaceful gestures. Surely a lifeform advanced enough for space travel is advanced enough to eventually understand our motives. All decks stand by. Captain out. Ship to ship.

UHURA: Hailing frequencies open, sir.

KIRK: This is the Captain of the USS Enterprise. We came seeking friendship but we have no wish to trespass. To demonstrate our goodwill, our vessel will now return the way it came. We (humming noise) Lay in a course ahead, Mister Bailey.

BAILEY: What? A course?

SULU: Plotted and laid in, sir.

KIRK: Engage, warp factor one.

SULU: Warp factor. There's no response.

KIRK: Switch to impulse.

SULU: All engine systems show dead, and weapon systems.

SPOCK: Switching to screen. I believe I can get something visual.

BALOK [on viewscreen]: You are wasting time and effort. There is no escape. You have eight Earth minutes left.

SPOCK: I was curious to see how they appeared.

KIRK: Yes, of course you were.

BAILEY: I don't understand this. Spock's wasting time. Everybody else just sitting around. Somebody's got to do something.

MCCOY: Easy, Bailey.

BAILEY: What do they want from us? Let's find out what they want us to do.

KIRK: They want us to lose our heads.

BAILEY: We've only got eight minutes left.

SULU: Seven minutes and forty five seconds.

BAILEY: He's doing a countdown!

MCCOY: Practically end of watch.

BAILEY: What, are you all out of your minds? End of watch? It's the end of everything. What are you, robots? Wound-up toy soldiers? Don't you know when you're dying? Watch and regulations and orders What do they mean?

KIRK: Bailey, you're relieved! Escort him to his quarters, Doctor.

MCCOY: Let's go. (McCoy and Bailey leave)

KIRK: Ship to ship.

UHURA: Hailing frequencies open, sir.

KIRK: This is the Captain of the Enterprise speaking. It is the custom of Earth people to try and avoid misunderstanding whenever possible. We destroyed your space buoy as a simple act of self-preservation. When we attempted to move away from it, it emitted radiation harmful to our species. If you've examined our ship and its tapes, you know this to be true. (humming noise)

BALOK [on viewscreen]: You now have seven minutes left.

SULU: Four minutes, thirty seconds.

SCOTT: You have an annoying fascination for timepieces, Mister Sulu.

MCCOY: I'm especially worried about Bailey. Navigator's position's rough enough for a seasoned man.

KIRK: I think he'll cut it.

MCCOY: Oh? How so sure? Because you spotted something you liked in him, something familiar, like yourself say about, oh, eleven years ago?

BAILEY [OC]: On the double, deck five! Give me a green light.

KIRK: Why, Doctor, you've been reading your textbooks again?

MCCOY: I don't need textbooks to know you could've promoted him too fast. Listen to that voice.

Dan Rather got it right George W. Bush DID go AWOL

byLefty Coaster

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. Bush less than stellar military career in the Texas Air National Guard. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.

That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%. What did come as a surprise was why George W. stopped flying and that he apparently did so with the tacit approval of his commanding officers in TANG, who who viewed Bush's move to Alabama to work on Winton "Red" Blount's campaign for the U.S. Senate as the the Junior Bush's effective departure from their unit and apparently from his 6 year obligation to the National Guard as well.

Truth or Consequences(subscription)

by Joe Hagan

MAY 2012

But the CBS documents that seem destined to haunt Rather are, and have always been, a red herring. The real story, assembled here for the first time in a single narrative, featuring new witnesses and never-reported details, is far more complex than what Rather and Mapes rushed onto the air in 2004. At the time, so much rancorous political gamesmanship surrounded Bush’s military history that it was impossible to report clearly (and Rather’s flawed report effectively ended further investigations). But with Bush out of office, this is no longer a problem.

While the Linkes were there, Bush’s former commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Killian, allegedly told them that Bush had stopped flying because he became afraid to land the plane. “He was mucking up bad, Killian told us,” Janet said to a Florida newspaper. (Jan Peter died in a car accident in 1973.)

But by the time Linke went public with her allegation, the press had already abandoned the Bush National Guard story for the Dan Rather controversy. Also ignored was some possible corroborating evidence...

What’s clear, however, is that Bush’s superiors made it unusually easy for him to quit flying and leave Houston. They first attempted to sign him up for a postal unit in Alabama that met once a month. (The commander of the outfit told Bush he couldn’t guarantee that the group would even exist in three months but added, “We’re glad to have you!”) When Bush was informed that he couldn’t fulfill his duty by doing that, he sent a letter requesting “equivalent duty” with the 187th Tactical Reconnaissance Group, at Dannelly Air Base, in Montgomery. The unit commander, in official memos, said Bush could start by attending two drills in September 1972. He didn’t show up for the drills.

When Bush lost his flight status, in August 1972, the official military protocol of the Texas Air National Guard was to open an internal investigation and review why the pilot didn’t show up for his physical. It says so on Bush’s own documents. That never happened.

Bush’s go-to expert on his military record, Albert Lloyd, said a report wasn’t necessary because Bush’s commanders knew he had stopped flying to go to work in Alabama—proof only that the Air National Guard blew off the rules when it came to Bush.

The Junior Bush wasn't so much disobeying orders as getting vague orders crafted to fit into his plans. Too bad so many other young Americans without Bush's Daddy's connections had their lives interrupted to be sent off to Viet Nam.

That, of course, didn't save Bush from dry holes, and the constant search for new investors.

In 1982, he decided to raise more money by going public. But first, in January 1982, he got a generous $1 million transfusion from Philip A. Uzielli, a New York investor who paid that much for 10 percent of Arbusto's far less valuable stock.

KIRK: I don't know. I was aboard the Enterprise-B in the deflector control room... ...Stir these, will you?

KIRK: The bulkhead in front of me disappeared.

Encyclopædia Britannica

James A. Van Allen

American physicist

James A. Van Allen, in full James Alfred Van Allen (born Sept. 7, 1914, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, U.S.—died Aug. 9, 2006, Iowa City, Iowa), American physicist, whose discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, two zones of radiation encircling Earth, brought about new understanding of cosmic radiation and its effects on Earth.

Van Allen attended Iowa Wesleyan College (B.S., 1935) and the University of Iowa (M.S., 1936; Ph.D., 1939). During World War II he served as a naval officer and helped develop the radio proximity fuse for naval artillery shells. In 1946 he was placed in charge of high altitude research at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, Silver Spring, Md. He supervised the testing and use of captured German V-2 rockets for upper atmosphere exploration and assisted in the development of the Aerobee, one of the first rockets built for research purposes.

In 1951 Van Allen became professor of physics at the University of Iowa, where he taught until his retirement in 1985. He was one of the scientists who proposed a program of worldwide cooperation in research, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957–58. The instrumentation of the early Explorer satellites, part of the United States’ IGY program, was built by Van Allen and his associates. Launched on Jan. 31, 1958, Explorer 1 was the first successful U.S. space satellite. The information on cosmic radiation gathered by the Explorer satellites led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts. He later participated in the development of numerous space probes built to study planetary and solar physics.

Van Allen wrote numerous papers and journal articles. He also edited Scientific Uses of Earth Satellites (1956) and was an associate editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research (1959–64) and Physics of Fluids (1958–62). He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1959 and was president of the American Geophysical Union from 1982 to 1984. In 1987 he was awarded the National Medal of Science.

For all these obvious clues that demonstrate that Microsoft is stealing my image, I am only finding the easy ones. Microsoft/Corbis's grand larceny is much more complex. They are developing their content by stalking me constantly and when they start selling the property they have stolen from me, all of what I have figured out so far will be just the tip of the iceburg. I am seeing that my family, including my children, are showing up in Microsoft/Corbis's attempts to steal my image for the financial gain of Microsoft/Corbis and accomplices. It may be that all this wasn't supposed to be revealed by them until decades from now so they are taking a lot of time to develop the content because there is going to be such a large market for it in the future. And they have a world audience to market to. They can, for example, play up on anti-American sentiment and that is why they revealed that I flew with Israel to Iraq in 1981. A lot of people that hate America would be very interested in buying and viewing that content. Bill Gates is thinking that there will be so much anti-American sentiment by that time that no one will really care that they had hidden cameras in my homes for all those years. People will still purchase and view whatever content they deliver regardless of just how badly Microsoft/Corbis was stalking me or because of the destruction Microsoft/Corbis caused as a result of selling their stolen product.

It is a win-win for Bill Gates and accomplices. He knows that people will still buy the property he has stolen from me regardless of how it wrecks my life. It is the same reason the paparazzi has such a lucrative appeal for people. If there wasn't a lot of money to be made in stalking celebrities, there wouldn't be so many people taking pictures of them. Bill Gates is the king of the paparazzi and he has billions to spend on crooked lawyers such as Brad Smith, dirty cops such as Dave Reichert, and corrupt politicians such as George W. Bush. There is something to all this that for Bill Gates is beyond money but I don't know what it is. Maybe he doesn't need any motivation and is doing it just because he is a sociopath.

It is not just the Seattle area where Microsoft has been encoding personal details about me into their facilities. The new Microsoft data-center in Quincy, Washington, aligns with C Street and 3rd Avenue at its north-east corner.

Oh brother I can't, I can't get through
I've been trying hard to reach you, cause I don't know what to do
Oh brother I can't believe it's true
I'm so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you
Oh I wanna talk to you
You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done

Are you lost or incomplete?
Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?
Tell me how do you feel?
Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak
And they're talking it to me

This song released in 1986. I “remember” someone laughing when I was singing it one day when I was repairing an ATM machine at First Federal.

Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades
Timbuk 3

I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

I've got a job waiting for my graduation
Fifty thou a year -- buys a lot of beer
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

Well I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
