We often cite the establishment, in 1958, of the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency, and its creation of the first packet-switched network, ARPAnet, as the beginning of the Internet.
But the American military's work in creating the Internet can be dated to 1910, when Army officer George Owen Squier (pronounced like "square") invented a way to let a telephone line carry multiple signals at one time. His discovery, multiplexing, paved the way for the development of telephone and data networks; as did his later invention of sending music over electric wires.
First Ph.D. in the Army
Squier was born in Dryden, Mich., on March 21, 1865, and graduated from West Point military academy when he was 22. He was a rare intellect. He was accepted to Johns Hopkins University, and, in 1893, became the Army's first person to receive a doctorate.
He spent his career inventing and forging new structures in the U.S. Army.
His first invention, in 1896, with Albert Cushing Crehore, was a camera that measured the speed of warheads as they left the barrel of a cannon.
Pioneer of aeronautics
Squier was assigned to the U.S. Signal Corps after the Spanish-American War, where he was responsible for creating the Aeronautical Division. He was the first Army officer to fly on an airplane, and, in 1909, was part of the team that bought the Army's first airplanes from the Wright brothers.
The aeronautics division was responsible for developing the communications and navigation equipment and procedures for military aircraft.
In 1910, while searching for ways to increase the number of calls Signal Corps could handle on its telephone network, Squier developed a way to multiplex calls, similar to how multiple signals could be bundled together on the telegraph network, called carrier frequency.
He was promoted to major general and chief signals officer for the Army during World War I, responsible for all communications and aviation during the war.
In 1919, he was elected to the National Academy of Science for his work in telephony, radio and aviation.
'Grandfather of the Internet'
Building on his multiplexing work, in 1922, Squier developed a system to "pipe" music using electric wires. He was granted a number of patents covering the delivery of music and other information over wires. His ideas are foundational to the concept of the Internet.
His Wired Radio Inc. became popular under the brand Muzak.
Squier retired from the Army in 1924, and died in Washington on March 24, 1934.

I am now quite convinced that everything I've experienced, beginning with the VA psychiatric hospital, was some sort of deliberate ploy, more than likely engineered by me, the person I used to be, before then.
The reasons make sense to me.
I think to myself of the very few times I have managed to get real people to actually respond to my statements.
There has been no serious deliberation by other people who've responded to me.
So that's consistent with my theory
My theory goes back to the 1990s
I theorize that I - as the person I was back then and am not now - made a galactically important discovery that affects every living person now on the face of planet Earth, actually proving you monkeys have some sort of importance, whatever that is
So, back then, as now, simple-minds are too lazy to a serious attempt to understand my hypothesis

The channel 4 KOMO tv news studio is across the street from the Space Needle in downtown Seattle
On May 9, 2006, as I watched the tv from a few miles away, the weather guy gesturing to a video image on the sidewalk below where he was standing and there was a guy standing there on the sidewalk with a canvas on an easel and he seemed to be painting a picture of the Space Needle across the street from him
The next morning, May 10, 2006, I awoke in that grungy homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle and I knew with absolute certainty everything I remember about my past was wrong.

A new thought flashed into my conscious-mind moments ago
Those of you trying to understand me here may perhaps understand the larger issue
This note is the result of an idea that formed in my conscious-mind a few moments ago and I examined my original-work to expand the notion
Yesterday I was thinking that 'inception' can be considered the opposite of 'perception'. They might explain that notion as fact in the dialog of the movie of the same name from year 2010, I have not viewed it in a long time from now
In recent weeks, thoughts formed in my conscious-mind that "The Joining", notionally that literary vehicle, occurred very long ago. There were only two of us. Two nodes on the same network. The only two nodes. Myself and other that you don't know about and still don't know about.
Whatever all this means here in reality, it is very real for me.

She finally arrived. Was late and I began to worry I would have to wait at least another day
Incredible, tremendous beauty, this doll
She is definitely my fantasy woman, and she is great to have just standing around for me to look at from my desk
The detachable legs don't help much as I hoped with the overall weight. Her body weight is monstrously heavy to have to move around. The legs, while soft, are fairly light in weight. Her advertised weight is about double the weight of Evelyn. Evelyn-B_157 is about 62 pounds. Hope-J_164 is about 90 pounds.
But what an incredible beauty.

Microsoft releases XP as new judge gets antitrust case

WASHINGTON — Microsoft yesterday handed its latest operating system to computer makers as its antitrust case — and the company's fate — was handed to a new judge.
A federal appeals court sent the landmark antitrust case back to the district court where it began, while Microsoft executives 3,000 miles away in Redmond were preparing for a ceremony in which they would give Windows XP to executives of Compaq, Dell and other computer manufacturers.

America entered World War I to reinforce the battered French and British troops waging a desperate fight against Germany. On June 2, 1918, a division of Marines was sent to support the French army at Belleau Wood. As the Marines arrived, they found French troops retreating through their lines. A French colonel, attempting to acquaint the Americans with the realities of the situation and not trusting his spoken English, scribbled a note to the officer in charge of the Americans ordering them to retreat. The Marine officer looked at the Frenchman coldly and said, Retreat, Hell! We just got here. That officer was Capt. Lloyd W. Williams, commanding the 51st Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

A decade ago, when Microsoft executives made lethal injection the primary way to execute pesky competition, it was considered less barbaric than hanging and less likely to bring long, costly trips to the woods.
Bill Gates has called lethal injection "undoubtedly innovative" and said that ruling otherwise would be "tantamount to forbidding the death penalty altogether for our competitors."
But now, as death row competitors in other states claim it's cruel punishment because it may not bring a peaceful death as once believed, some managers say Bill Gates will likely have to look for another more painful method.
"It's pretty clear that this method of execution has the potential to cause a great deal of pain -- and maybe even more pain than some of the methods we're using now and we like that."

Yesterday, I started thinking that maybe no one is going to just give me the explanation I have been waiting on. Instead, what I think is going to happen is someone is going to hand me a set of keys and say "Here you go. One shiny, pre-owned Microsoft. Have fun." I just wonder if Bill Gates is a smoker and if so, whether I will be able to get that smoky smell out of it before I take it for a drive.

The Battle of Belleau Wood (1 26 June 1918) occurred during the German spring offensive in World War I, near the Marne River in France. The battle was fought between the U.S. 2nd (under the command of Major General Omar Bundy) and 3rd Divisions along with French and British forces against an assortment of German units including elements from the 237th, 10th, 197th, 87th, and 28th Divisions. The battle has become a key component in the lore of the United States Marine Corps.

The battle was now deadlocked. At midnight on 7 8 June, a German attack was stopped cold and an American counter-attack in the morning of 8 June was similarly defeated. Sibley's battalion having sustained nearly 400 casualties was relieved by the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. Major Shearer took over the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines for the wounded Berry. On 9 June, an enormous American and French barrage devastated Belleau Wood, turning the formerly attractive hunting preserve into a jungle of shattered trees. The Germans counter-fired into Lucy and Bouresches and reorganized their defenses inside Belleau Wood.
In the morning of 10 June, Major Hughes' 1st Battalion, 6th Marines together with elements of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion attacked north into the wood. Although this attack initially seemed to be succeeding, it was also stopped by machine gun fire. The commander of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion Major Cole was mortally wounded. Captain Harlan Major senior captain present with the battalion took command. The Germans used great quantities of mustard gas. Next, Wise's 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines was ordered to attack the woods from the west, while Hughes continued his advance from the south.
At 04:00 on 11 June, Wise's men advanced through a thick morning mist towards Belleau Wood, supported by the 23rd and 77th companies of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, and elements of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Engineers and were cut to pieces by heavy fire. Platoons were isolated and destroyed by interlocked machine gun fire. It was discovered that the battalion had advanced in the wrong direction. Rather than moving northeast, they had moved directly across the wood's narrow waist. However, they smashed the German southern defensive lines. A German private, whose company had 30 men left out of 120, wrote "We have Americans opposite us who are terribly reckless fellows."
Overall, the woods were attacked by the Marines a total of six times before they could successfully expel the Germans. They fought off parts of five divisions of Germans, often reduced to using only their bayonets or fists in hand-to-hand combat.
On 26 June, the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, under command of Major Maurice E. Shearer, supported by two companies of the 4th Machine Gun Battalion and the 15th Company of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, made an attack on Belleau Wood, which finally cleared that forest of Germans. On that day, Major Shearer submitted a report simply stating, "Woods now U.S. Marine Corps entirely", ending one of the bloodiest and most ferocious battles U.S. forces would fight in the war.

In this trademark infringement action brought pursuant to section 43(a) of the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1125, plaintiffs, the heirs of an author and owners of that author's work, claim that defendant's motion picture bears a title which is confusingly similar to the title of a short story published over half a century ago by the author. The summary judgment motion at bar presents, inter alia, the question whether plaintiffs may claim trademark protection in the title of a single expressive work, when the title is also the name of a science fiction genre.
I
Plaintiffs are the heirs of William F. Jenkins, a science fiction author who published works of fiction under the pseudonym, "Murray Leinster." Among Jenkins' work is the novellette "First Contact," the title of which is the subject of this litigation. Defendant Paramount Pictures Corporation produces, advertises and distributes television programs, movies, and related products.
In 1945, Jenkins, using his pseudonym, published "First Contact" in the magazine Astounding Science-Fiction. "First Contact," put simply, is a tale of mankind's first encounter with extraterrestrial life. Although many stories, books, and movies examine alien encounters with earthlings, Jenkins' short story is widely regarded as the prime example of this plot.2 In that regard, Jenkins' story has been reprinted in numerous anthologies since its initial publication in 1945, and in 1996, twenty-one years after Jenkins' death, the story was honored with a 1946 Retro-Hugo Award.3 In addition, perhaps as a result of Jenkins' story, a vast line of literature, movies, and nonfiction reports of alien encounters are described as "first contact" stories.

Voyager 2

Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, as a part of the Voyager program. It was launched on a trajectory towards the gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) and enabled further encounters with the ice giants (Uranus and Neptune). The only spacecraft to have visited either of the ice giant planets, it was the third of five spacecraft to achieve Solar escape velocity, which allowed it to leave the Solar System. Launched 16 days before its twin Voyager 1, the primary mission of the spacecraft was to study the outer planets and its extended mission is to study interstellar space beyond the Sun's heliosphere.
On July 18, 2023, Voyager 2 overtook Pioneer 10 as the second farthest spacecraft from the Sun.
Reductions in capabilities
As the power from the RTG slowly reduces, various items of equipment have been turned off on the spacecraft.
