Flight of the Intruder (1991)
Grafton: Dear Sharon, By now you've been notified that Morgan is gone. Too many good men have died like Morgan these past two years. I guess I knew him as well as any man could know another. He was... he was my best friend. I know how heavy a burden his loss is to you and little Bobby, and... and I know how much he loved you. Somehow I wish there was something, just one thing I could do to make up for such a loss as Morgan. I go on, as Tennyson said, and the world darkens around me

After I awoke from a nap this afternoon, I felt compelled to write about a dream I had just before I woke up but then did not write about it. I started feeling that need to write about it again but may have forgotten some details by now. I have started thinking that the dreams I have just before waking up mean something in their own right.
In the dream, I was wearing a Navy uniform. I didn’t have anywhere to go though and seemed to be just walking around what I guess was a Navy installation. I decided to go into a building to ask if another Commander was still there even though I knew he wasn’t there. I spoke to a Navy enlisted person who appeared to be an Airman judging by his three green stripes although I couldn’t make out his rating symbol. He asked me a question but I didn’t hear his question and I asked him to repeat it by saying “Sir?” to him with an inquisitive tone. He asked me how I could not know that the other Commander was already deployed and I said something about how I just did not know. I left and walked down and out on some kind of spiral staircase, although that part isn’t that clear and I find myself wondering about that part. There was another spiral staircase ahead of me, there seemed to be dual staircases on either side of the front door to that building, and a Lt. j.g. came down the other side. I want to say he was someone I should know but I can’t picture him as someone I knew. I want to say it was him that spoke something to me at that point but I also want to say the voice came from behind me. He said, or someone else said, something about me being “a little off.” I wondered if he meant that I was wrong about some of these details. Then I wondered if he meant I was a little crazy, but I think I started thinking that last one after I woke up. I think after he or someone said that, it made me start thinking about the uniform I was wearing. I found myself thinking after I awoke that it seemed to be a Marine Corps officers dress uniform. I seemed to be wearing the dark blue Marine uniform with white pants. But I am confused about one detail as it seemed I looked to my left shoulder and saw Navy shoulder boards with Captain stripes. Or was it just an epaulet, I am not sure, but there was a pair of sunglasses clipped under it. I was walking down the sidewalk and there were two people ahead of me. One may have been that Lt. j.g. Another was a female officer, Navy I guess. Somewhere along there I realized I had forgotten to wear the appropriate cover for that uniform and realized that I was still wearing a ball cap, although I had actually taken it off as I went outside. I realized I couldn’t return anyone’s salute. Then I started thinking that the ball cap had USS Wainwright printed on it but I don’t remember actually looking at it and I may remember that detail in the sense that someone was reading details to me, they were telling me what the name was on the cap. I also remember that it had a frayed bill just like the Nike cap I have now. I remember I was walking very slowly. It was hard to walk and I was limping. I have thought several times before that if I do start wearing the uniform again, I should use a cane until I get my leg back in better shape. Then I was in a parking garage and I had to cross a street into a parking lot, I guess to find my car. I am still not sure about the uniform and I remember it seemed to be a single-breasted coat-type of uniform but the Navy uniform is double-breasted. But the Marine uniform doesn’t have shoulder boards as far as I know. That is what I thought the j.g. was telling me, that I only had a few minor details wrong, such as I had transferred over to the Marines at some point. I have written about that in the past too, but I am not sure what it means.
9/22/2006 5:59 PM
That junior officer may have just been telling me that my uniform needed adjustment as I remember straightening out the front of it and lining up the buttons after that.
9/22/2006 10:31 PM
I was thinking later that the junior officer, who I thought was obviously Navy, was wearing the same uniform as I. Maybe it was an old USN uniform, maybe a style that was worn in the USN over one hundred years ago.

Ah.... a cookbook. If that was me that was stuck in the aircraft carrier's superstructure after ejecting from a failed launch of my F-14 Tomcat, I created an artificial and symbolic memory of me sitting underneath the ships radar while reading a book. I almost got cooked by that radar so I symbolized that with me sitting under it reading a book to create a reference to a cookbook. I have other vague memories, artificial or real, I'm not certain, that support this notion.

I've been thinking about that one scene from "Top Gun," which was released on 5/16/86. They could have thrown the audio in late in post-production because I don't think you could actually see the actor saying these words. It was that part where "Goose" died after ejecting from the F-14 and the rescue swimmer was telling him he had to let him go.

I've been thinking that I the journey to Mars and back lasted for 18 months. 8.5 months there, 1 month on Mars, 8.5 months back.
But that doesn't account for a longer trip back, which I assume would be the case. Unless there was something different on the way back. For instance, I wasn't carrying along as much equipment, for example. And/or I had more power ("power to spare" means something I can't yet explain) on the way back. I've been thinking today about possible configurations for the trip. There was a separate rocket system for putting me and possibly my habitation unit into orbit. Then I joined up with the system that was going to take me to Mars. A similar system was sent off earlier to orbit Mars to wait for my return trip. The rocket system that sent me to Mars was similar to the external rocket system for the shuttle. I'm thinking it had 4 solid-rocket boosters though and the center tank wasn't used at launch, rather it was that center tank that produced the thrust to kick me and my supplies towards Mars. Something would have been different about the system waiting at Mars for my return. The difference may have just been in how long it took it to get there. They could have launched it much earlier and thus saved fuel that was then used to kick me back to Earth.

I noted earlier that May 9th, or 5/9, seemed to be the day the transition began back to Thomas Ray, it stands to reason that September 5th, or 9/5, should also be an important date. It seems unlikely I will have my actual memories back by that date though. Maybe that will be the day I have one solid memory from Thomas Ray, something I could discuss with someone in my family and they would know I was Thomas Ray. I wonder if I am supposed to change my name to Thomas Reagan though after this transition.

Broken Launch Bar Linkage
The USS Forrestal (CV-59) was on its last operational cruise in the Med in 1990. We were conducting night flight ops off the coast of Turkey in support of Operation Provide Comfort. I had just shutdown my aircraft and was walking across the flight deck when the sound of snapping metal amidst a Tomcat launch off the port waist cat caught my attention. I turned to see the F-14 sliding sideways towards the edge of the flight deck. Apparently a component of the launch bar had snapped midway through the catapult stroke sequence, giving the Tomcat only a gentle push (approx. 20-30 knots) instead of the huge kick in the butt required to get the aircraft up to flying speed. The pilot had immediately realized something was wrong, and in a split second reacted to attempt to hit the brakes and stop prior to falling off the edge into the ocean 80 feet below. As they approached the edge, a tire blew sending the F-14 sliding sideways, and the pilot judged they wouldn't stop in time and initiated ejection. As the pilot and RIO rode the seat rails up into the night, one of the F-14s main landing gear jumped the deck edge rail but miraculously stuck just over the edge, and the aircraft remained perched precariously partially over the deck edge. The RIO was soon sighted landing further aft on the flight deck, and although he received some bumps, bruises and scrapes from his ejection and rough landing on the flight deck, he was was happy to walk away from it with a good story to tell that night over midrats. Meanwhile, a full scale search was underway for the pilot. The airborne SAR helicopter had witnessed the ejection and was on the scene so rapidly that the image of the RIO floating down in his parachute canopy nearly filled their windscreen as they whipped across the fantail. They quickly set up for an approach to the datum, and commenced a hover search. Flight operations were suspended and all airborne aircraft were given instructions to hold overhead (or expeditiously recovered if low on fuel). Fifteen minutes later there was still no sign of the pilot. As the search proceeded with additional helicopters and ships in the area, the flight deck began to quiet down. An alert deck hand thought he heard a faint cry for help, but didn't see anything over the deck edge. The sound of yelling for help persisted, and suddenly the deck hand looked up, and with the aid of his flashlight, was able to make out the shape of the pilot hanging from his parachute 100 feet above him in the radio antennaes and masts at the top of the carrier's superstructure. Although the recovery of the pilot took an additional half hour, he was recovered uninjured.
F-14 CREW EJECTS DURING CARRIER LAUNCH
DailyPress.com
Dec 18, 1990
The two-man crew of an F-14 Tomcat from a Oceana Naval Air Station squadron was forced to eject Monday night on takeoff from the Florida-based carrier USS Forrestal, Navy officials said.
The pilot and radar intercept officer, both assigned to Fighter Squadron 31 at Oceana, received minor injuries after parachuting down to the carrier, Navy officials said.
The men decided to eject when it looked like the jet was not going to be able to get up enough speed for takeoff and was headed instead over the side of the carrier, the Navy said.
The jet came to rest near the edge of the flight deck. Although the incident was under investigation, Navy officials said the jet apparently had become separated from the catapult during launch, the Navy said.
After ejecting, the pilot landed on the flight deck, suffering bruises and scrapes and possibly a sprained ankle, officials said.
The radar intercept officer was rescued from his parachute that snagged on the ship's superstructure, or island, above the flight deck. He received minor scrapes, Navy officials said.
Both men, whose names were not available late Tuesday, were treated by medical personnel aboard the carrier.
The Forrestal, based in Mayport, was conducting night training operations off the coast of Florida.

My DD-214 doesn’t reflect that because, first of all, it is about Kerry Burgess, but also because it only reflects the period ending 5/14/90. I may have still flown as a fighter and bomber pilot after 1987, but I don’t think that was ever my primary role again after returning. I am not sure what to think about the thoughts I have had about flying the Apache gunship. Maybe that is something else I did occasionally.

Mikoyan MiG-29
From Wikipedia
The Mikoyan MiG-29 (NATO reporting name: "Fulcrum") is a fourth-generation jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s, the MiG-29, along with the larger Sukhoi Su-27, was developed to counter new American fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.
Operational history
The Soviet Union exported MiG-29s to several countries. Because 4th-generation fighter jets require the pilots to have extensive training, air-defense infrastructure, and constant maintenance and upgrades, MiG-29s have had mixed operational history with different air forces.
Iraq
Iraq received a number of MiG-29 fighters, and used MiG-29s to engage Iranian equivalent opponents like F-14, F-4 and F-5 during the later stages of the Iran-Iraq War.

Identification (literature)
From Wikipedia
Identification refers to the automatic, subconscious psychological process in which an individual becomes like or closely associates themselves with another person by adopting one or more of the others' perceived personality traits, physical attributes, or some other aspect of their identity. The concept of identification was founded by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in the 1920’s, and has since been expanded on and applied in psychology, social studies, media studies, and literary and film criticism. In literature, identification most often refers to the audience identifying with a fictional character, however it can also be employed as a narrative device whereby one character identifies with another character within the text itself.
