Powers

Maybe I can figure out how to use my power to control the weather that I can see outside. That is a good test case as I try to control something I have no control over and that would seem to be random occurrences.

Now I have to figure out how to generate a test case that I can schedule for a test.

For one thing, if the sky is clear then how could I make it rain ten minutes later when there are not even any clouds that are ten minutes away.

It's a test.
It's asking us for the right answer.

Digital Integrated Attack/Navigation Equipment - this is just a game to you.

I've finished watching that film now and I remember some thoughts after I resumed the video after my last post.

Why this seems important to share in my public blog, I don't know. Other than obvious reasons. Somehow this must be why I am here now.

I am a bait car. A stupid piece of metal. I just sit here and wait for something to happen.

So anyway, his fake wife shows up and I think, "Her again."

I don't know what that actress makes me think of that girlfriend from Arlington Heights. She was also the romantic interest of Gene Hackman's character in the 25 August 1989 film "The Package." In that 1989 film, she was a US Army officer who was the ex-wife of the character Gene Hackman portrayed, who was an enlisted soldier in the US Army and who then has a lot of conflict when he escorts a military prisoner, who is portrayed by the actor Tommy Lee Jones.

So anyway, why does that actress remind me of that girlfriend from Chicago? I don't know. I thought of her when a car with distinctly similar features that she drove in 1986 shows up in the 6 August 1993 film "The Fugitive" and the woman driving asks Harrison Ford if he needs a ride.

That actress from the 1987 film "The Fourth Protocol" and the 1989 "The Package" has no real distinct features I can recall to that girlfriend from Chicago. Maybe it is their chin. I always want to say they have distinctly different chins so maybe that is something. Their hair is different, as best I recall. I don't recall the voice, in terms of specific details I can now articulate, of that girlfriend from the Arlington Heights suburb of Chicago Illinois so I don't know if that is the reason I think there is some kind of association there.

In the 1989 film "The Package" that actress is a US Army officer in charge of some kind of computer and data processing center and the Gene Hackman character contacts her for help after the military prisoner he was escorting escapes from him, which the film, as I recall, reveals was supposed to happen and that was why he was assigned.

That girlfriend from Chicago came to see me that first time after I had been assigned to the USS Wainwright CG 28 in Charleston South Carolina. We might have talked about getting married but, as I recall I usually brought up marriage with any woman I was sleeping with and I, as best I recall, was never really serious about it. I guess that was just something that seemed appropriate for the time. In reality, I was a jerk. I don't even know what she saw in me in the first. I think about how I was still chewing tobacco back in that time. That is really a disgusting habit when I really think about it.

I broke up with her because, in a nightclub in downtown Charleston, I met a girl from Scotland who had moved here to the United States where her sister's and their husbands lived. For a while recently I have been thinking of her place in this world.

What was that port during our Med cruise in 1989? The ending of this film got me thinking of that. That would have been late 1989 or very early 1989. The Fire Controlman Senior Chief Petty Officer of our division, who became the Master Chief Petty Officer after I left, told me he was glad I had gone up on the deck of the forecastle that day. We were in port somewhere in the Med, I don't think that was in Naples Italy, but it could have been, but I reject that notion because as I recall no one liked Naples and if a riot was going to happen then we expect it there, but it could have been somewhere. We were in Valencia Spain, which was a place I enjoyed a lot and had never been there before but I don't think that happened there but who really knows because I was on duty the day the rally happened on the pier and thus was sober while usually when on the beach in the Med, I usually was not and there were always girls from Britain. No matter what port we were in, there were always girls who told us they were on holiday from Britain. So where was that? France? Toulon France? Maybe. That was my last stop before flying back to the United States, similar to the 1991 film where they are going to Mexico, I was riding from Monaco France to Toulon France in the back of the mail truck and I was seriously hung over from drinking too much and I was crashed on a pile of boxes in the back of the mail truck that would take me to the US military flight back to Charleston SC. A serious windstorm had blown through Monaco just about that time. The plane flew for what seemed to be only a few minutes before we had several hours of wait time at another airport to repair something that had gone wrong with the airplane.

One day when I was in the gulag in Pioneer Square, there was a choir that came in and performed down in the cafeteria. It must have been a Tuesday because I think we had that weekly house meeting that day and they were still in there. I think they started during the dinner meal. It may have been around last Christmas. I remember thinking they had sure traveled a long ways to be there. Were they not from Princeton University??!!

I think it was this group. Whoever they were, they were very good.

March 4th, 1976

Medal of Honor recipients and their families, distinguished Members of the Congress, Secretary Rumsfeld, Secretary Middendorf, Secretary Reed, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, ladies and gentlemen:

We are gathered here today to honor four Americans for exceptional military gallantry in the service of our Nation. All four of these men distinguished themselves above and beyond the call of duty. I deeply regret that one of the awards, to the late Captain Lance P. Sijan, of the United States Air Force, is posthumous. The other three, Rear Admiral James P. Stockdale, United States Navy; Colonel George E. Day, United States Air Force; and Lieutenant Thomas R. Norris, United States Naval Reserve, are here with us today.

At 200 mph, Patricia sets record for strongest hurricane ever

By Scott Sistek Published: Oct 23, 2015 at 11:07 AM PDT Last Updated: Oct 23, 2015 at 4:16 PM PDT

The numbers are staggering: A hurricane bearing down on western Mexico has been measured to have winds stronger than Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Andrew -- and even Hurricane Camille. In fact, put any name there and Hurricane Patricia tops them all: 201 mph!

The National Hurricane Center said Friday morning that based on data from hurricane hunter aircraft, Patricia had strengthened into a monster Category 5 hurricane with peak *sustained* winds at 175 knots -- or 201 mph -- with even higher gusts! That is 6 mph more than the 195 mph winds measured by satellites in Typhoon Haiyan which caused massive destruction in the Philippines in 2013. In North America, Hurricane Allen had 190 mph winds in 1980.

200 mph is also the baseline windspeed of an F5 tornado.

The wind speed is just one record the hurricane has set. A second record is the recorded central barometric pressure of 879 millibars -- the lowest central pressure ever recorded in a hurricane near North America (Typhoon Tip in 1979 measured 870 mb in the waters off Guam).

To put that in perspective, normal sea level pressure is 1012 millibars or about 29.92" on your home barometer. To convert Patricia's central pressure into inches of mercury, that would be an astonishing 25.96". To compare, Hurricane Andrew had a central pressure of 922 mb and peak winds of 175 mph.

It's not just the strength that's making meteorologists' jaws drop, but how fast it intensified. Patricia formed suddenly Tuesday evening as a tropical storm, turned into a hurricane just over a day later and kept building in strength, catching many off guard with its rapid growth.

Early Thursday morning, the storm had a central pressure of just 980 mb with 85 mph peak winds. Now, 28 hours later, the storm pressure had dropped an incredible 100 mb -- essentially 1/10th of an entire atmosphere and the winds have raged to 200 mph.

Patricia weakened just a little as it approached the Mexican coastlaine Friday afternoon, dropping to 190 mph in its center and a central pressure of 900 mb.

How can it get so strong so fast? I'm sure Patricia will end up being the subject of numerous research papers, but of chief reason are the super warm ocean temperatures off the Mexican coast. A ship a few hundred miles offshore reported a sea temperature of 87.8 degrees and satellite measurements suggest a wide swath of ocean temperatures in the upper 80s in that area of the Pacific Ocean.
The air was much moister than usual, adding yet more fuel. And at the same time, upper-level crosswinds - called shear - that restrain a hurricane from strengthening were missing for much of Thursday, meteorologists said.

"I was really astounded," said MIT meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel. "It was over the juiciest part of the eastern Pacific."

El Nino's fingerprints are all over this, meteorologists agreed. And while it fits perfectly into climate scientists' theories of what a warming world will be like, they say global warming can't quite be blamed - yet.

The NHC is taking no chances, issuing as dire of warnings as they can to make sure those its path take heed, calling it "potentially catastrophic hurricane."

HISTORY

SEPTEMBER 18, 1975 : PATTY HEARST CAPTURED

Newspaper heiress and wanted fugitive Patty Hearst is captured in a San Francisco apartment and arrested for armed robbery.

On February 4, 1974, Patricia Hearst, the 19-year-old daughter of newspaper publisher Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped from her apartment in Berkeley, California, by two black men and a white woman, all three of whom were armed. Her fiancé, Stephen Weed, was beaten and tied up along with a neighbor who tried to help. Witnesses reported seeing a struggling Hearst being carried away blindfolded, and she was put in the trunk of a car. Neighbors who came out into the street were forced to take cover after the kidnappers fired their guns to cover their escape.

Three days later, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a small U.S. leftist group, announced in a letter to a Berkeley radio station that it was holding Hearst as a “prisoner of war.” Four days later, the SLA demanded that the Hearst family give $70 in foodstuffs to every needy person from Santa Rosa to Los Angeles. This done, said the SLA, negotiations would begin for the return of Patricia Hearst. Randolph Hearst hesitantly gave away some $2 million worth of food. The SLA then called this inadequate and asked for $4 million more. The Hearst Corporation said it would donate the additional sum if the girl was released unharmed.

In April, however, the situation changed dramatically when Patty Hearst declared, in a tape sent to the authorities, that she was joining the SLA of her own free will. Later that month, a surveillance camera took a photo of her participating in an armed robbery of a San Francisco bank, and she was also spotted during the robbery of a Los Angeles store.

On May 17, police raided the SLA’s secret headquarters in Los Angeles, killing six of the group’s nine known members. Among the dead was the SLA’s leader, Donald DeFreeze, an African American ex-convict who called himself General Field Marshal Cinque. Patty Hearst and two other SLA members wanted for the April bank robbery were not on the premises.

Finally, on September 18, 1975, after crisscrossing the country with her captors–or conspirators–for more than a year, Hearst, or “Tania,” as she called herself, was captured in a San Francisco apartment and arrested for armed robbery. Despite her later claim that she had been brainwashed by the SLA, she was convicted on March 20, 1976, and sentenced to seven years in prison. Her prison sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter and she was released in February 1979. She later married her bodyguard. In 2001, she received a full pardon from President Bill Clinton.

The New York Times

ZERNA SHARP, 91, DIES IN INDIANA

ZERNA SHARP, 91, DIES IN INDIANA; ORIGINATED 'DICK AND JANE' TEXTS

By JOSEPH B. TREASTER

Published: June 19, 1981

Zerna A. Sharp, who created the concept for the Dick and Jane reading textbooks that were widely used in American classrooms for four decades, died on Wednesday at the Wesley Manor nursing home in Frankfort, Ind. She was 91 years old.

Miss Sharp never married and often referred to Dick and Jane as ''my children.'' She had been living in retirement in California and Indiana since 1964.

Miss Sharp conceived the illustrated readers while working as a traveling reading consultant for the publishing concern of Scott Foresman & Company after she had taught first grade for more than a decade and served as principal of an elementary school.

''She used to go down and sit on the beach on the South Side of Chicago and listen to the kids playing,'' said Robert L. Sharp, a nephew who lives in Frankfort, Ind. ''She noticed them saying, 'Look, look,' instead one word, 'Look.' That's how I understand the idea for the books came about.'' Simplicity of Texts

Miss Sharp did not write the books, but worked with an illustrator, Eleanor B. Campbell, and several others to produce the texts. In the books, only one new word was introduced on each page and no individual story introduced more than five new words. The illustrations showed the characters carrying out the action of the words.

''There's nothing these book children do that a child couldn't remember having done themselves,'' Miss Sharp once told an interviewer. ''They made the books part of themselves. We made reading easy for them and encouraged them to read more.''

The books had been criticized by some as casting Jane in stereotyped female roles, subordinate to Dick. But Miss Sharp replied: ''It never bothered the children. That's all an adult's viewpoint.''

By the early 1970's Scott Foresman had placed its emphasis on other reading texts, but a company spokesman said at the time that many schools ''are hanging on to them and are still deeply devoted to these books.''

Miss Sharp was born Aug. 12, 1889, the first of five children of the owner of a general store in Hillisburg, Ind. She studied at a teachers college in Marion, Ind., but never received a degree.

Chapter 37

“But lately, I’ve had an extremely bad dream. It recurs, like my dream of being crushed to death under the lift, but it makes that one look like a pussycat in comparison. It’s like no other dream I’ve ever had, but somehow it’s like all of them. As if… as if it were the sum of all bad dreams. And I wake up feeling bad, as if it wasn’t a dream at all, but a vision. I know how crazy that must sound.”

“What is it?”

“It’s a man,” Bateman said quietly. “At least, I think it’s a man. He’s standing on the roof of a high building, or maybe it’s a cliff that he’s on. Whatever it is, it’s so high that it sheers away into mist thousands of feet below. It’s near sunset, but he’s looking the other way, east. Sometimes he seems to be wearing bluejeans and a denim jacket, but more often he’s in a robe with a cowl. I can never see his face, but I can see his eyes. He has red eyes. And I have a feeling that he’s looking for me —and that sooner or later he will find me

The American Presidency Project

Gerald Ford

XXXVIII President of the United States: 1974 - 1977

198 - Remarks at the Old North Bridge, Concord, Massachusetts.

April 19, 1975

Thank you very, very much, Mr. Suter. Governor Dukakis, Mr. Ambassador, Senator Brooke, Senator Kennedy, Members of the House of Representatives, distinguished guests, and fellow, Americans:

Two hundred years ago today, American Minutemen raised their muskets at the Old North Bridge and answered a British volley. Ralph Waldo Emerson called it "the shot heard round the world." The British were in full retreat soon afterwards and. returned to Boston. But there was no turning back for the colonists--the American Revolution had begun.

Today, two centuries later, the President of 50 united States and 213 million people stands before a new generation of Americans who have come to this hallowed ground.

In these two centuries, the United States has become a world power. From a newborn nation with a few ships, American seapower now ranges to the most distant shores. From a militia of raw recruits, the American military stands on the frontlines of the free world. Our fliers and our planes eclipse one another in power and in speed with each succeeding new breed of airmen and aircraft.

From a nation virtually alone, America is now allied with many free worlds [nations] in common defense. The concepts of isolationism and "Fortress America" no longer represent either the reasoning or the role of the United States foreign policy.

World leadership was thrust upon America, and we have assumed it. In accepting that role, the United States has assumed responsibility from which it cannot and will not retreat. Free nations need the United States, and we need free nations. Neither can go it alone.

There are some in the world who still believe that force and the threat of force are the major instruments of national and international policy. They believe that military supremacy over others is [the] logical and legitimate [end] of their revolutionary doctrines. Such aims have left a trail of tyranny, broken promises, and falsehood.

Tyranny by any other name is still tyranny. Broken promises in any other language are still promises unkept. And falsehood by any other description is still a lie.

This is not the rhetoric of the past. It is reason about the present because history keeps repeating itself. Force as an instrument of national and international policy continues to be a major instrument of change in the world. Reasonable societies and reasonable people must do all in their power to reconcile all threats to peace. Now is a time for reconciliation, not recrimination. It is a time of reconstruction, not rancor.

The world is witnessing revolutionary technological, economic, and social change--a massive and rapid breaking of barriers.

We, all men and women of all lands, must master this change. We must make this revolution an evolution--to make and accept change with greater order and greater restraint.

How can we achieve, how can we accomplish this evolution? It is not enough to call upon material resources. No material resources are sufficient to themselves to inspire the continued confidence of men in reasonable change. We must summon higher, greater values as we proceed. These higher values are found in the principles of this Republic, forged by our forefathers in the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Jefferson wrote of change in the light of American principles, and he said, "Nothing, then, is unchangeable but the inherent and inalienable rights of man." Jefferson accepted change in the ordinary course of human events, but he rejected any fundamental change in the principles of our Republic, the inalienable rights of man.

Often, change is healthy for a people and a nation. That is why America has always been a land of new horizons and new hopes. Free choice, the consent of the governed, represents the American philosophy of change.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are sacred rights, not to be given or not to be taken by shifting winds or changing moods. It is important to recall these truths, because the men and women of America must renew that faith, their courage, and their confidence. Our belief, our commitment to human rights, to human liberties, must also represent belief and commitment to ourselves.

It is a time to place the hand of healing on the heart of America--not division and not blame. When all is said and done, the finest tribute that may ever be paid this Nation and this people is that we provided a home for freedom.

Freedom was nourished in American soil because the principles of the Declaration of Independence flourished in our land. These principles, when enunciated 200 years ago, were a dream, not a reality. Today, they are real. Equality has matured in America. Our inalienable rights have become even more sacred. There is no government in our land without consent of the governed.

Many other lands have freely accepted the principles of liberty and freedom in the Declaration of Independence and fashioned their own independent republics. It is these principles, freely taken and freely shared, that have revolutionized the world. The volley fired here at Concord two centuries ago, "the shot heard round the world," still echoes today on this anniversary.

One hundred years from now, a new generation of Americans will come here to rededicate this Nation and renew the spirit of our people in the principles that inspire us on this occasion. Let it be said that those of us who came to Concord today reaffirmed these final words of the Declaration of Independence: "We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor."

Thank you very, very much.

Note: The President spoke at 9:54 a.m. at Patriots Day ceremonies at the bridge. He was introduced by Philip Suter, chairman of the Town of Concord Board of Selectmen.

Following the President's remarks, Sir Peter Ramsbotham, British Ambassador to the United States, laid a wreath on the graves of British soldiers buried at Concord. The President then placed a wreath at the base of the Minutemen Statue.

The Columbus Day Storm 50th Anniversary

It was the most powerful and destructive storm to strike the Northwest since the arrival of European settlers.

AND it was probably the most powerful non-tropical cyclone to strike the lower-48 states during the past century.

The Columbus Day Storm occurred on October 12, 1962, with the fiftieth anniversary this week.

I have thought a lot about this event, partially because one of my research areas has been intense Northwest storms and in part because I am giving a talk on Thursday at Kane Hall.

The winds during the storm were amazing (see graphic of peak gusts, courtesy Wolf Read). Over 145 mph at Cape Blanco, 138 mph at Newport, over 130 mph at Mt. Hebo, 160 mph at the Naselle radar site in SW Washington, 116 in Portland, and 100 mph in Renton (so those people who put down Renton keep this in mind!).

The central pressure of the Columbus Day Storm (CDS) dropped to approximately 955 hPa and was equivalent in pressure and winds to a category 3 hurricane (like Katrina as it struck New Orleans). I have little doubt that if the CDS hit today it would result in many billions, if not tens of billions, of dollars of damage. The Columbus Day Storm was FAR stronger than the "Perfect Storm" (Halloween 1991) of movie fame. I mean it wasn't even close.

Before the storm was over 46 people had died, 317 were hospitalized, and 15 billion board feet of timber, enough to build 300,000 homes, had fallen. Millions had lost power, with the twin high-tension power lines to Portland toppled like some children's Tinker Toys.

An interesting aspect of this storm was that is started as Typhoon Freda in the western Pacific. Moving northward, this storm weakened and transitioned into a midlatitude cyclone. In doing so, it switched energy sources from the warmth and moisture of the tropical Pacific to the differences in temperatures found in the midlatitudes (sort of a meteorological version of a hybrid car). Moving across the Pacific, it swung south into a large trough over the eastern Pacific and then moved northward along the West Coast, growing very rapidly

http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/Display/tabid/225/Article/106446/brigadier-general-frank-p-lahm.aspx

U.S. AIR FORCE

BRIGADIER GENERAL FRANK P. LAHM

Retired November 20,1941 Died July 07,1963

Frank Purdy Lahm was born in Mansfield, Ohio in 1877. He attended public school in Mansfield and later a Dominican school near Paris, France. Lahm then spent two years at Michigan Military Academy preparing for West Point, where he entered in June 1897.

Although he graduated in the top fifth of his class, he found plenty of time for athletics. He held the rope climbing record at West Point, and his great enthusiasm for riding led him into the Cavalry upon graduation in 1901. He became a second lieutenant of cavalry and served in the Philippines for two years.

Upon his return to the United States in 1903, Lieutenant Lahm was stationed at West Point as an instructor in French. The summer of 1904 was eventful. It marked the beginning of his activities in aeronautics.

Lahm's father had joined the Aero Club of France and owned the balloon the "Katherine Hamilton," named in honor of his daughter. The elder Lahm made frequent ascensions and initiated his son in a night ascension.

In the summer of 1905 young Lahm completed the requirements of six ascensions, including one at night and one alone, to win his Federation Aeronautique Internationale license as a balloon pilot. In July of the same summer Lahm became a first lieutenant. In 1906 young Lahm won the International Balloon Race, flying across the Channel from Paris, France to Yorkshire, England.

Lieutenant Lahm contracted typhoid in the spring of 1907. He spent part of his convalescence at a rest home in St. Germain. One day the garden gate opened and in walked the senior Lahm and Wilbur and Orville Wright. This was the beginning of a warm friendship which lasted until the two brothers died.

In August 1907, Lieutenant Lahm was assigned to the Aeronautical Division of the 0ffice of the Chief Signal Office in Washington. At Fort Myer Va., Lahm and a detachment of Signal Corps soldiers constructed a hydrogen generating plant and practiced captive observation balloon work. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone and an early aviation enthusiast, often invited Lahm and young scientists to his Washington home for discussions on many subjects, especially aviation.

The Wright brothers brought an improved version of their 1908 plane to Fort Myer, Va., in 1909 for official War Department tests. After practice hops Orville Wright, with Lieutenant Lahm as a passenger, made the first official test flight on July 27. He and Lahm established a world's record for a two-man flight - one hour, 12 minutes and 40 seconds. The Wright Brothers set out to fulfill their Army contracts by teaching officers to operate the machine. In October 1909 Wilbur Wright trained Lieutenants Lahm and Frederic E. Humphreys at a field in College Park, Md. Both officers soloed. With little more than three hours apiece flying time, Lahm and Humphreys were pronounced pilots on Oct 26. When Lahm and Humphreys crashed Nov. 5, the Army lost its entire air force, one plane. Both were uninjured, but the Signal Corps lost them when they returned to their regular assignments.

In 1911 Lahm attended Mounted Service School and at the end of the year he was transferred to the Philippines. At the request of the Signal Corps he opened a flying school at Fort William McKinley near Manila in March 1912. Lahm trained several pilots in the next two years using one Wright Type B plane.

Lahm was then assigned to the 6th Cavalry and served at Texas City and Harlingen, Texas until April 1916. He became a captain April 1, 1916, and then President of the Junior Military Aviator Examining Board, Signal Corps Aviation School in San Diego, Calif. In May 1917 Captain Lahm became commanding officer of the Army Balloon School at Fort Omaha, Neb., and in June he was promoted to major.

Major Lahm went to Britain with the American Expeditionary Forces in August 1917. He participated in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne offensives, and then in the occupation of a defensive sector.

Lahm was inspector of the British and French balloon services and chief of staff, Air Service, 1st and 2d armies in France. In February 1918 Lahm became a lieutenant colonel and in September he was appointed full colonel.

Colonel Lahm returned home in August 1919 and studied at the General Staff College in Washington D.C., until August 1920. He was a member and later in charge of the Organization Section, Organization Branch of the Operation and Training Division of the General Staff until July 1924. He was then Air Officer at the Ninth Corps Area at the Presidio of San Francisco, Calif.

The Air Corps Training Center was established at San Antonio, Texas in August 1920. Lahm commanded the school which included primary and advanced flying school and the School of Aviation Medicine. Lahm was appointed assistant to the chief of the Air Corps with the rank of brigadier general in July 1930.

In 1931 Lahm went to France as assistant military attache for air. Four years later he was chief of aviation for the First Army at Governors Island, N.Y. He received the Legion of Merit for his contribution to this command during its important formative period. Lahm served on duty at the Gulf Coast Air Corps Training Center at Randolph Field, Texas where he retired Nov. 20, 1941 in the grade of brigadier general. Lahm died July 7, 1963 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky, Ohio.

In addition to the Legion of Merit, Lahm received the Distinguished Service Medal, the French Legion of Honor and the Portuguese Order of Avis. Lahm was co-author with Colonel Charles deForest Chandler of How Our Army Grew Wings.

Mega-storm Patricia drenches Mexico as it weakens

Oct 24, 6:03 AM (ET) [ Saturday 24 October 2015 Pacific Time USA ]

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Patricia pushed rapidly inland over mountainous western Mexico early Saturday, weakening from its record-breaking strength but still powerful as it dumped torrential rains that authorities warned could cause deadly floods and mudslides.

Patricia, which peaked as the strongest hurricane on record in the Western Hemisphere, made landfall Friday on a sparsely populated stretch of Mexico's Pacific coast as a Category 5 storm

Vera Finley: You wouldn't hurt anyone even if you could. You're not a violent man. You've never hated anyone, never.

Harold Finley: Not to hurt them, no, Vera. But I have this power. It acts whether I want it to or not.

Vera Finley: No, Harold, you don't have any power. You've always been quiet. You told me yourself you're too mild, you're too weak.

Harold Finley: No more, Vera! I could split this ceiling open if I wanted to! I could crash down these walls. I could splinter this whole block into bricks and rubble.

Vera Finley: Harold, you're a little man, a nobody. You don't have any power.

Chapter 48

“Who’s here?” Trash croaked, but no answer came back.

He was afraid then, because this was a place of ghosts, a place where monsters might lurk, but the fear was weakened by his weariness. He stumbled down the steps and into the casino, passing the Cub Bar, where Lloyd Henreid sat silently in the deep shadows, watching him and holding a glass of Poland water.

He came to a table upholstered in green baize, the mystic legend DEALER MUST HIT 16 AND STAND ON 17 inscribed thereon. Trash climbed up on it and fell instantly asleep. Soon nearly half a dozen men stood around the sleeping ragamuffin that was the Trashcan Man.

“What do we do with him?” Ken DeMott asked.

“Let him sleep,” Lloyd answered. “Flagg wants him.”

Chapter 37

So they walked on down 302, one of them wheeling the barrow while the other drank a beer. No matter which was which, Bateman talked, an endless monologue that jumped from topic to topic with hardly a pause. Kojak bounced alongside. Stu would listen for a while, then his thoughts would trail off for a while, following their own tangents, and then his mind would come back. He was disquieted by Bateman’s picture of a hundred little enclaves of people, some of them militaristic, living in a country where thousands of doomsday weapons had been left around like a child’s set of blocks. But oddly, the thing his mind kept returning to was Glen Bateman’s dream, the man with no face on top of the high building—or the cliff-edge—the man with the red eyes, his back to the setting sun, looking restlessly to the east.

He woke up sometime before midnight, bathed in sweat, afraid he had screamed. But in the next room, Glen Bateman’s breathing was slow and regular, undisturbed, and in the hallway he could see Kojak sleeping with his head on his paws. Everything was picked out in moonlight so bright it was surreal.

When he woke, Stu had been up on his elbows, and now he lowered himself back to the damp sheet and put an arm over his eyes, not wanting to remember the dream but helpless to avoid it.

He had been in Stovington again. Elder was dead. Everyone was dead. The place was an echoing tomb. He was the only one alive, and he couldn’t find the way out.

THE PLEA OF CRAZY SNAKE (Chitto Harjo)

By JOHN BARTLETT MESERVE.

DEATH OF CRAZY SNAKE

"Spring has passed four times since Chitto Harjo was laid to rest in his grave-house at the home of Daniel Bob. He died in a foreign land—the Choctaw country, for such a fullblood would consider any spot outside the boundaries of his tribal lands. His abandoned home in the Creek Nation, valued at several thousand dollars, forced the Federal government to perservere in its search for Chitto, and only the most assiduous inquiry led to his location.

"Daniel Bob, in Indian fashion, dictated a letter to the writer that for simplicity and directness belongs to Homeric times. It reads:

"There was a man by the name of Chitto Harjo were came over here at my place.

"He were stay here while, and he got down in April 5, 1911, and the last few days of his life were spent in bed. One morning in April 11, 1911, at 10 o'clock, his life passed from away.

"In this April 5, he get down that with indeed distress, as the gunshot wound in his hip, and had died.

"Than we laid him good in my house yard. That where he lie in grave.

"This is all about Chitto Harjo death at my place".

20 – The Dance of the Vampires

"Vampire, Vampire!" the CIC talker said aboard Ticonderoga. "We have numerous incoming missiles. Weapons free."

The group antiair warfare officer ordered the cruiser's Aegis weapons system into full automatic mode. Tico had been built with this exact situation in mind. Her powerful radar/computer system immediately identified the incoming missiles as hostile and assigned each a priority of destruction. The computer was completely on its own, free to fire on its electronic will at anything diagnosed as a threat.

Also, I have been thinking more today about how I have reacted to memories I still have of the time period before 6/13/2005. I was inpatient at the University of Washington Medical Center mental health unit in Seattle and they executed me there. They literally decided on 13 June 2005 to literally kill me dead dead dead and then someone came into my room that night, possibly after midnight I have been thinking, and they literally injected me with some kind of chemical compound that killed me dead and then they hauled my corpse off for storage. After I returned as a living being after they literally killed me I returned with incomplete memory. I think of that change now as being some kind of loss of context. Not so much a fragmentation of memory but a loss of context about memory. A key fact changed and so that causes my mind to ignore certain facts about before 6/13/2005.

Chapter 38

As the superflu epidemic wound down, there was a second epidemic that lasted roughly two weeks. This epidemic was most common in technological societies such as the United States, least common in underdeveloped countries such as Peru or Senegal. In the United States the second epidemic took about 16 percent of the superflu survivors. In places like Peru and Senegal, no more than 3 percent. The second epidemic had no name because the symptoms differed wildly from case to case. A sociologist like Glen Bateman might have called this second epidemic “natural death” or “those ole emergency room blues.” In a strictly Darwinian sense, it was the final cut—the unkindest cut of all, some might have said.

Chapter 38

Sam Tauber was five and a half years old. His mother had died on June the twenty-fourth in the Murfreesboro, Georgia, General Hospital. On the twenty-fifth, his father and younger sister, two-year-old April, had died. On June the twenty-seventh, his older brother Mike died, leaving Sam to shift for himself.

Sam had been in shock ever since the death of his mother. He wandered carelessly up and down the streets of Murfreesboro, eating when he was hungry, sometimes crying. After a while he stopped crying, because crying did no good. It didn’t bring the people back. At night his sleep was broken by horrible nightmares in which Papa and April and Mike died over and over, their faces swollen black, a terrible rattling sound in their chests as they strangled on their own snot.

At quarter of ten on the morning of July 2, Sam wandered into a field of wild blackberries behind Hattie Reynolds’s house. Bemused and vacant-eyed, he zigzagged among blackberry bushes that were almost twice as tall as he was, picking the berries and eating them until his lips and chin were smeared black. The thorns ripped at his clothes and sometimes at his bare flesh, but he barely noticed. Bees hummed drowsily around him. He never saw the old and rotted well-cover half buried in tall grass and blackberry creepers. It gave under his weight with a grinding, splintering crash, and Sam plunged twenty feet down the rock-lined shaft to the dry bottom, where he broke both legs. He died twenty hours later, as much from fear and misery as from shock and hunger and dehydration.

Chapter 38

George McDougall lived in Nyack, New York. He had been a teacher of high school mathematics, specializing in remedial work. He and his wife had been practicing Catholics, and Harriett McDougall had borne him eleven children, nine boys and two girls. So between June 22, when his nine-year-old son Jeff had succumbed to what was then diagnosed as “flu-related pneumonia,” and June 29, when his sixteen-year-old daughter Patricia (and oh God she had been so young and so achingly beautiful) had succumbed to what everyone—those that were left—was then calling tube-neck, he had seen the twelve people he loved best in the world pass away while he himself remained healthy and feeling fine. He had joked at school about not being able to remember all his kids’ names, but the order of their passing was engraved on his memory: Jeff on the twenty-second, Marty and Helen on the twenty-third, his wife Harriett and Bill and George, Jr., and Robert and Stan on the twenty-fourth, Richard on the twenty-fifth, Danny on the twenty-seventh, three-year-old Frank on the twenty-eighth, and finally Pat—and Pat had seemed to be getting better, right up to the end.

George thought he would go mad.

He had begun jogging ten years before, on his doctor’s advice. He didn’t play tennis or handball, paid a kid (one of his, of course) to mow the lawn, and usually drove to the corner store when Harriett needed a loaf of bread. You’re putting on weight, Dr. Warner had said. Lead in the seat. No good for your heart. Try jogging.

So he had gotten a sweatsuit and had gone jogging every night, for short distances at the start, then longer and longer ones. At first he’d felt self-conscious, sure that the neighbors must be tapping their foreheads and rolling their eyes, and then a couple of the men that he had only known to wave to when they were out watering their lawns came and asked if they could join him—probably there was safety in numbers. By that time, George’s two oldest boys had also joined in. It became a sort of neighborhood thing, and although the membership was always evolving as people dropped in and dropped out, it stayed a neighborhood thing.

Now that everyone was gone, he still jogged. Every day. For hours. It was only when he was jogging, concentrating on nothing more than the thud of his tennis shoes on the sidewalk and the swing of his arms and his steady harsh respiration, that he lost that feeling of impending madness. He could not commit suicide because as a practicing Catholic he knew that suicide was a mortal sin and God must be saving him for something, so he jogged. Yesterday he had jogged for almost six hours, until he was completely out of breath and almost retching with exhaustion. He was fifty-one, not a young man anymore, and he supposed that so much running was not good for him, but in another, more important way, it was the only thing that was any good.

So he had gotten up this morning at first light after a mostly sleepless night (the thought that played over and over in his mind was: Jeff-Marty-Helen-Harriett-Bill-George-Junior-Robert-Stanley-Richard-Danny-Frank-Patty-and-I-thought-she-was-getting-better) and put on his sweatsuit. He went out and began to jog up and down the deserted streets of Nyack, his feet sometimes gritting on broken glass, once leaping over a TV set that lay shattered on the pavement, taking him past residential streets where the shades were drawn and also past the horrible three-car crash at the Main Street intersection.

He jogged at first, but it became necessary to run faster and faster to keep the thoughts behind him. He jogged and then he trotted and then he ran and finally he sprinted, a fifty-one-year-old man with gray hair in a gray sweatsuit and white tennis shoes, fleeing up and down empty streets as if all the devils of hell were after him. At quarter past eleven he suffered a massive coronary thrombosis and fell down dead on the corner of Oak and Pine, near a fire plug. The expression on his face was very like gratitude.
