I was supposed to report aboard the Taylor on December 18th. But I took a flight to Charleston instead and then I had to spend the night at the Logan airport in Boston and so I did not report until the next day, the 19th, to the ship where it was still located in the shipyards of Bath Maine. That date 18 December 1984, I recall still, was the official date on my official United States Navy orders. I was supposed to report for permanent assignment on that date but I went to Charleston South Carolina, which was the scheduled homeport for my ship, printed on my orders, and I can still recall that night the 18th standing there at a military liaison kiosk in the old airport in Charleston and the USN sailor manning that post along with a marine let me use the telephone to call the ship and I spoke to the Boatswain Mate Chief Petty Officer and I told him where I was and that I was leaving Charleston right then to fly to Portland Maine. I still had no idea where the shipyard was located from there. I remember the long night in the airport in Boston waiting for the next morning when the flights resumed and I then flew into Portland in an airplane and I was the only passenger on the flight.

Kerry Burgess in 1981
I started looking my life's memories as symbolism for Thomas Ray's life and it started making sense. The symbolism isn't 100% detailed and it's not supposed to be. Rather, it creates an 'impression.' Once I see the impressions created from certain details, I begin to understand.
One of those details connects my high school with Thomas Ray's Academy years. Specifically, as it connects to the Osirak raid, I remember the year 1981. In the summer of 1981, I had finished 9th grade and I went to a summer camp for a couple weeks. It was called Camp Couchdale and I took some classes on Hunter Safety and Defensive Driving. I met a girl named Phoebe.

WASHINGTON — Six years ago, in the wake of the Iran-Contra scandal, congressional Democrats and Democratic Party leaders heaped criticism on the way President Ronald Reagan and his CIA director, William J. Casey, had carried out covert intelligence operations.
One of the abuses they cited was the Reagan Administration's failure to inform Congress about covert operations for as much as a year after they were carried out. Another was the practice of raising money from foreign governments, such as Saudi Arabia, to finance American intelligence operations.
So how much change will there be at the CIA now that President Clinton has taken office and the Democrats are once again in charge of the U.S. intelligence community?
Not very much, if earliest indications are any guide.
At his confirmation hearing Tuesday, R. James Woolsey, Clinton's new CIA director, repeatedly refused to make any commitment to notify Congress before or within 48 hours after any covert operation--even though the Democratic Congress last year passed legislation, finally vetoed by President Bush, that would have required such notice.

In the spring of 1962, André Malraux, the French minister for cultural affairs, was on an official visit to Washington, DC, when First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy approached him with a proposal to display the Mona Lisa in the United States. Malraux was open to the suggestion, and by the end of the year, all of France was abuzz with the possible overseas trip of La Gioconda. The painting had left French soil only once before, in 1911, when a former Louvre employee named Vicenzo Peruggia stole the work and transported it to Italy. Many in France opposed the loan on the grounds that a transatlantic journey would damage the painting; a group of curators at the Louvre threatened to resign if the painting were lent to the United States, and the newspaper Le Figaro printed an article asking the American people to refuse the loan.
Despite resistance from the French public, the Mona Lisa was nonetheless removed from the Louvre for shipment to the United States. The painting, housed in a specially constructed, temperature-controlled case within a fireproof and watertight container, was put aboard the ocean liner SS France. The container was affixed to a bedframe in a deluxe cabin and escorted by security guards and museum officials, who kept a twenty-four-hour vigil over the precious passenger. Though the ship was scheduled to arrive in New York, the painting's first stop in America was not to be the Metropolitan. Rather, the work was slated to go on display only at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. It was not until the Mona Lisa was already in transit that the Metropolitan received official confirmation that it would also be able to exhibit the painting.
On December 19, 1962, the SS France, accompanied by the United States Coast Guard, entered New York Harbor as though it were carrying a visiting head of state. The White House had announced that the painting would receive the level of Secret Service protection normally reserved for the president of the United States, and thus local, state, and federal security officials met the French visitor at the dock. Upon its arrival, the painting was transferred to an air-conditioned van for transport to the National Gallery in Washington. All traffic along the transport route was stopped, and the procession drove through red traffic lights the entire way to its destination.

I think that at that time none of us quite believed in the Time Machine. The fact is, the Time Traveller was one of those men who are too clever to be believed: you never felt that you saw all round him; you always suspected some subtle reserve, some ingenuity in ambush, behind his lucid frankness. Had Filby shown the model and explained the matter in the Time Traveller's words, we should have shown him far less scepticism. For we should have perceived his motives; a pork butcher could understand Filby. But the Time Traveller had more than a touch of whim among his elements, and we distrusted him. Things that would have made the frame of a less clever man seemed tricks in his hands.
