USS Princeton (CG-59) is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser serving in the United States Navy.
On the morning of 18 February 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, Princeton was patrolling 28 nautical miles off Failaka Island in the Persian Gulf, on the west side of the decoy United States Marine Corps and naval invasion forces afloat. At exactly 7:15 AM local time two Italian-made MN103 Manta bottom-mounted influence mines detonated, one just under the port rudder and the other just forward of the starboard bow, the second explosion most likely being a sympathetic detonation caused by the first. The blasts cracked the superstructure, buckled three lines in the hull, jammed the port rudder, flooded the #3 switchboard room through chilled water pipe cracks, and damaged the starboard propeller shaft. Three crewmembers were injured, one seriously. Despite the severe damage, the forward weapons and the AEGIS combat system were back online within 15 minutes.

"Sir," he cautioned, "he's got the last remaining Harpoon." But Chandler still had it in his mind that he needed to warn her away, and he maintained this even when the Joshan locked on with its fire control radar. Listening in over the net back on the Coronado and in Tampa, Less and Crist grew increasingly concerned. Less liked the idea of giving the Iranians a warning in hopes of sparing lives, but after repeated warnings he wondered why Chandler had not opened fire. General Crist turned to a senior staff officer sitting next to him and asked apprehensively, "Why doesn't he just blow him out of the water?"
Finally, with only thirteen miles separating the two forces - close enough for the Joshan's captain to see the Wainwright's mast peeking just above the horizon - Chandler issued his fourth and final warning to the Joshan - "Stop and abandon ship. I intend to sink you."
With this Mallek decided to act. If the Americans were going to attack him, he would not take the first hit.

Navy Rises To Occasion In Duel At Sea

WASHINGTON For the first time in more than 40 years, enemy warships have seriously challenged the U.S. Navy at sea. The Navy won - decisively.
When the sun set on the Persian Gulf Monday night, at least two Iranian patrol boats were at the bottom, two others were heavily damaged, perhaps even sunk, and two Iranian frigates were disabled.
In one day`s combat, Iranian fleet strength was reduced considerably. The U.S. ships involved in the fighting were unscathed.
By all accounts, the Navy racked up a victory, marred only by the probable loss of an Army attack helicopter. The Cobra helicopter, operating with a two-member crew from the cruiser Wainwright, was reported overdue.
The engagement underscores the decisive impact of air power in naval engagements and the effectiveness of simple countermeasures in dealing with antiship missile attacks.
But the incident that prompted Monday`s naval battle-the near sinking last week of the USS Samuel B. Roberts by an Iranian mine-raises anew the question of the Navy`s ability to deal effectively with even simple mines.
The Navy`s success in surface combat stems in large measure from the presence of aircraft overhead. E-2C Hawkeye radar planes from the carrier Enterprise provided early warning of Iranian F-4 Phantom jets as well as inbound surface vessels.
Attack aircraft known as A-6 also provided early warning of impending attacks. And it was the bombs and missiles fired from the A-6s that inflicted most of the damage. Only two of the Iranian vessels damaged or sunk were hit by ordnance fired from surface warships.
At the same time, the Iranian air force-with barely two dozen or so planes still operational, for want of American spare parts-was able to mount only a token sortie of two F-4s, which were chased off and possibly damaged by U.S. antiaircraft missiles.
Control of the sea would seem to require dominance of the air.
Indeed, the British Royal Navy`s losses in the Falkland Islands war might have been far worse if the Argentine A-4s had not been forced to fly to the very limit of their range, with only enough fuel for one pass, and if more of their bombs had exploded on impact.
However, the Persian Gulf action shows that some of the Navy`s surface ship countermeasures do work. The captain of the frigate USS Stark was roundly criticized for not employing chaff as a radar decoy before his ship was hit by a radar-homing Exocet missile last May.
On Monday, the cruiser Wainwright used its chaff to decoy a Harpoon missile fired from the attacking Joshan, an Iranian fast attack craft.

With the primary mission accomplished, SAG Charlie patrolled the area. About three hours later, they detected the approach of an Iranian Kaman patrol boat, which the Bagley's LAMPS-I identified as the Joshan. As the patrol boat closed, the SAG commander repeatedly warned the Iranian that he was standing into danger and advised him to alter course and depart the area. When his direction was ignored, the U. S. commander requested and was granted "weapons free" by CJTFME. He then advised the Joshan:
"Stop your engines and abandon ship; I intend to sink you."
After thinking this communication over, the Joshan's CO apparently decided to go out firing and launched his only remaining Harpoon. The three SAG Charlie ships, now in a line abreast at 26,000 yards, and the Bagley's LAMPS simultaneously detected the launch and maneuvered and launched chaff. The Harpoon passed down the Wainwright's starboard side close aboard (the seeker may not have activated)

And too add on that is my memory of about the year 1978. Theda was married to Randy Romine at the time and at his house he had a really tall High Amplitude Modulation tower antenna. I climbed it often in the dark of night and I used it sometimes to drop my "R2-D2" model rocket to test its parachute. I couldn't afford the Estes chemical rockets back then so the only way it could get airborne was for me to drop it from the high altitude of that tower. I thought of that often years later when my occupation in the United States Navy was to ensure the accuracy and computer fire control of guided missiles and gunfire.

After reviewing the current cease-fire in the Persian Gulf, which has been in effect since August 20, and consulting with allies and friends in the region, the President has decided to modify our present method of providing protection to U.S.-flagged shipping in the Gulf. The modification entails a change from a tight escort procedure to an "accompany" regime. In an accompany regime, U.S. forces will be positioned such that they can take appropriate action if U.S.-flagged ships are directly threatened.
In making these adjustments, we would reiterate that the United States intends to maintain in the Gulf the forces required to protect U.S.-flagged shipping and support our national objectives. These changes in no way alter our commitment to freedom of navigation in the Gulf.

Murray seeks $1 billion for VA

Seattle Times staff reporter
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.
Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.
The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."

I am not certain if that is correct though.
I have been thinking for a while that I would have graduated in 1969 but that is just because that is 4 years after 1965. I do not know.

Human life must not be created for the purpose of destroying it. The United States and the international community have now spoken clearly that human cloning is an affront to human dignity and that we must work together to protect human life. I look forward to working with Members of Congress to enact legislation to ban all human cloning in the United States.

Residential College Council ratifies official charter to gain recognition

The Residential College Council (RCC) last week ratified an official charter, making it a recognized student organization, chair Ilya Shapiro '99 said. The charter states the primary aim S of the RCC — which is to promote unity among the five colleges — and details the legislative structure and rules of the council, Shapiro explained. All five residential colleges have approved and submitted the charter to Assistant Dean of Student Life Beth Morgan, he said. The RCC was established several years ago as the Inter-College Council, an informal organization that organized social events, Shapiro said. Last spring, the council disbanded because members had personal conflicts and there was no written organizing constitution on which to depend, he explained. Sophomores gathered this fall under the leadership of former InterCollege Council chair Brian Gaw '98 to rename and rejuvenate the RCC and to put together a charter, Shapiro added. Without a charter, the council had no set of regulating rules, and its finances were going astray, Gaw said. "We had no framework within which to operate," he explained. According to Gaw, the council had difficulty wording the charter, facing "a question of autonomy." "The Residential College Council is funded by the residential colleges, but if the RCC was responsible to each college for every decision, nothing would get done," Gaw explained. The new charter gives the RCC autonomy to organize events regardless of a residential college veto, Gaw said. However, the council must review the plans "if any of the colleges disapproves of them. "The function of the RCC is to sponsor events that will encourage greater inter-college interaction," said vicechair Brian Johnson '99. "We want to avoid (isolationism) between colleges."
Each of the five residential colleges has its own council from which two members are selected for the RCC. "Representatives come to the council with the interests of their college in mind," said treasurer Mark Ellis '99. "The RCC is not just an extension of the residential colleges," Ellis said. "It is a separate group designed to bridge the gap between the different colleges." The Class of 1998 RCC board organized several events, including the computer dating dance, the "screw your roommate" dance and the lip syncing contest, said Gaw. "We hope to expand next year to provide different types of activities," Shapiro said. The RCC will pass out questionnaires to the current first-year class to determine what events it would like the council to organize in the upcoming year, said Johnson. "We are going to be running activities that the student body really wants," he added.
