Doc Hollywood (1991)

Quotes

Dr. Aurelius Hogue: Well, nice work, Hollywood. You were just about to crack open the chest of a 6 year-old boy to cure a case of diarrhea. Now, listen up smart ass. Next time I tell you how to treat a patient of mine, you'd better damn well do it, doctor. I doubt you'd know crap from Crisco.

Reading through all this, including the humorous part about the parachutes, as well these excerpts, I wonder again if I have some medical training. I think my first, if I have more than one, doctorate was in computer science. But I wonder if I was studying medicine and surgery, too. Probably.

from the journal of Kerry Burgess: 03/24/07 3:52 AM
I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base.

There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

from the journal of Kerry Burgess: 02/01/07 7:30 PM
There is that "memory" I have of being in my apartment in Charleston after hip surgery and hearing about the explosion of a gun turret on the USS Iowa. That explosion really happened but why do I "remember" being in my apartment at the time?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Emissary (part 1) - television series Season 1 Episode 1 - Aired Jan 03, 1993

Episode Summary

Stardate: 46379.1

Commander Benjamin Sisko takes command of the Bajoran space station Deep Space Nine, formerly Terok Nor, recently abandoned by the Cardassian Empire. The discovery of the first stable wormhole, controlled by time-independent aliens, worshipped by the Bajorans as gods (called Prophets), gives Sisko religious significance as the aliens' Emissary.

[Promenade]

(The place looks like it's been in the middle of a war zone. O'Brien is in black overalls with coloured shoulders whilst Sisko is in the TNG style uniform still.)

O'BRIEN: I'm told the Cardassians decided to have some fun the day they left. Four Bajorans were killed trying to protect their shops.

SISKO: Why hasn't anybody cleaned this up?

O'BRIEN: We've got all available personnel assigned to repairing primary systems, sir. The Cardassians took every component of value. We're virtually defenceless. I discussed this with Major Kira, the attaché assigned here by the Bajoran government and we decided

SISKO: Understood. What about the civilians who operated these shops?

O'BRIEN: A lot of them lost everything they had. A few are trying to rebuild, but most are packing up to leave.

[Shrine entrance]

MONK: Welcome, Commander. Please enter. The prophets await you.

SISKO: Another time, perhaps.

MONK: Another time.

[Sisko's quarters]

O'BRIEN: When my wife Keiko saw our quarters, she started talking about visiting her mother in Kumamoto. Sir, I wouldn't allow the boy to go roaming. We're still having some security problems.

JAKE: Dad, there is nothing to sleep on in there except a cushion on the floor.

O'BRIEN: We can get you a real bunk off the Enterprise.

GW Replaces 3,000 Mattresses in Preparation for Crew Move Aboard

Story Number: NNS050822-10 Release Date: 8/22/2005 11:28:00 AM

By Journalist Seaman Latisha Gholston, USS George Washington Public Affairs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73) (GW) improved the quality of life for her sea warriors by replacing old mattresses aboard with 3,000 brand new ones Aug. 15-18.

This evolution kept GW on track during their scheduled docked planned incremental availability (DPIA) at Northrop Grumman Newport News (NNGN) Shipyard. Making the berthing compartments habitable helps prepare the crew for their scheduled move aboard Aug. 23-26, and moves them one step closer to operational readiness.

By the end of the ship's yard period, GW will have replaced more than 5,000 mattresses on the ship.

"Our goal is to get the job done in a timely manner," said Lt. Cmdr. Rob Crofoot, GW's habitability officer. "Everyone out here is working hard, and this evolution will be a success."

GW sea warriors created a human chain in the form of 200-man working parties to get the job done.

"I think that participating in hands-on evolutions builds character," said Storekeeper Seaman Bella Yusupova, a member of the working party. "It feels like we're doing this to benefit not just the ship, but also our home."

"This evolution takes team work, motivation and patience," said Quartermaster 1st Class (SW) Bruce Reed, GW's navigation department's leading petty officer. "Everyone should be excited because it's not often that crew members get to enjoy brand new mattresses. It shows the chain of command and the Navy are concerned about our quality of life."

"The new mattresses are said to be more comfortable," added Lt. Cmdr. Devlin, the ship's assistant supply officer. "This should definitely boost the morale of the crew."

The crew can also look forward to new pillows, linens and other supplies which will improve their quality of life. In addition, the berthing areas aboard are being cleaned and renovated.

"The entire crew is looking forward to getting back on board and utilizing the new supplies that have been upgraded during the yard period," said Reed. "This evolution has been a great opportunity for Sailors to get involved with improving their quality of life."

All right call Hogue get him here right away
He doesn't like to be disturbed after he's..
I really don't care. I'll tell you what.
Forget Hogue. What's the referral hospital?
Athens General.
Call Athens General.
Tell 'em we got a possible cardiac emergency
Call Lou, tell her to fire up the ambulance.
No, forget it. They have a helicopter,
right? Tell 'em to send the helicopter.
And get me all medical history
you have on this boy.
I think I'd better call Dr. Hogue.
Damn it!
Listen to me! Hogue is not here.
I'm here! You do it!
Okay, here's the situation.
Your son is turning blue because
he has an abnormal mitral valve.
It's causing a back flow of blood
in his heart. We may have to operate.
I'm gonna send him to Athens
General as soon as possible.
Dr Hogue said you should give the boy a Coke
What?
He says he's probably got a bellyache
and that you should give him a Coca-cola.
Listen, Doctor.
I got a boy here in cardiac crisis.
You can't treat that
with Coca-cola or Bisquick.
We're gonna have to use
real medicine this time.
Now I'm sending him to Athens General.
You're his regular fuckin' doctor.
You get your fat ass out of bed,
get down here, and go with him!
How long is it going to take that
goddamn chopper to show?
It should be here any minute.
Where's Stone?
Dr. Hogue?
What the hell kind of
snot-nosed puppy doctor are you, anyway?
Wake me up out of a sound sleep, scare
these poor folks out of their skivvies!
Mitral valve regurge.
Huh?
Look, I've had a lot of experience
with it in E.R., okay?
I've even assisted in the surgery to correct
Now God only knows how long he's had this,
but I guess you overlooked it.
Now why don't you go and check his color.
Nurse Packer, get that crap off of the boy!
Gene, you gave him the bismuth subnitrate,
didn't you?
At first we thought it was the skitters.
You gave him too much, as usual!
Turned him three shades of blue.
Bismuth subnitrate?
Home-grown antacid. You hear a heart murmer?
No, it's hard to detect.
You been sampling your daddy's chaw?

You have the authority to.. commute my sentence. Could you do that?

Look, I'll make it worth your while, all right? I get back to L.A., maybe we can work something out.

Why on earth would I want to do that? How am I gonna convince you to stay here if you're not here? We need a doctor. You need patients.

Get off the interstate, Ben Stone!

Right? Huh?...

Now don't let the signs of prosperity and urban sprawl here in downtown scare you. We're still the same sleepy little paradise that many big-city shrinks recommend for.. .. their patients with nervous disorders. It's the calming effect of Grady's natural ozones. In fact, there's a world-class mental hospital just up the road a ways.

That's a comforting thought.

Ben Stone. do you like coffee?

Do you like coffee? We won't go in here.

Is that him?

That's him.

He's young, huh?

Boys, this here is Ben Stone, .. a Hollywood physician who's gonna spend a couple few days with us.

Ben, this here is, Mortimer, John, Audrey. Probably don't want to shake his hand.
