Funny Guy Rice Wows Fifth-Graders -- Goofy Voices But No News On Governor Race

Norman B. Rice, mayor of Seattle, possible gubernatorial candidate, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, respected statesman and all-around dignified guy, sat with a class of fifth-graders and addressed them in his best underwater voice, gurgling: "Mr. Gepetto, where are youuouououu?"
That's been his response all week, since King County Executive Gary Locke announced his candidacy Monday, putting pressure on Rice to decide.
Rice wasn't about to make such an announcement before a group of fifth-graders, though he did say: "I do believe you always ought to have a higher objective in mind."

GATES AND GATES: Preston Thorgrimson Shidler Gates & Ellis initiated a new speakers' program Monday at the Rainier Club. First up was Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates III. (Gates's dad is Bill Gates Jr., a managing partner of the firm.)
About 200 people attended. But, when the server brought the check, she presented it to the wrong Bill Gates. As the Microsoft chairman puzzled over the bill, the audience erupted in laughter. The waitress said, "I just saw the name tag. I'm so embarrassed."
MAYOR WHOOPS: Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris came up one mayor short last Friday. Harris was presenting First Citizen awards to Capt. Al Haynes, who saved lives by piloting a crippled DC-10 into the Sioux City, Iowa, airport and to Gary Brown, emergency-services director for Iowa's Woodbury County.
The chief began by saying, "On behalf of Mayor Charles Royer . . ." The crowd groaned and chuckled.
"Doggone it, I do it every time," said Harris. "I've worked for both men and both names start with `R.' "
He continued the presentation, reaching a perfect place to rectify his error. The chief said, "On behalf of Mayor Rrrrr - Norman B. Rice . . ."

Long Lines Of Investors As Starbucks' Stock Arrives On Wall Street

Starbucks, the king of coffee beans, sold its first shares of stock to the public today, and lines were as long as the queues at its 140 locations in seven metropolitan areas.
Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

Captain Apollo
Captain Apollo is the name of a fictitious character in the original Battlestar Galactica television series. He was played by Richard Hatch, who would also later appear as the character of Tom Zarek in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series in 2005.
Apollo was a Viper spacefighter pilot of the Battlestar Galactica, and the son of Commander Adama. (A diary entry from Adama in one of the novelizations based on the original television series says that he was named for one of Adama's squadron mates from his time aboard the battlestar Cerberus.) His sister is Lieutenant Athena, and his mother was Ila.
Apollo's history has been marred by tragedy. The loss of the Twelve Colonies deprived him of not only his home, but many of his personal relationships. His brother Zac was shot down by a Cylon ambush. Zac's viper was damaged, and Apollo left him behind in order to warn the Galactica of the ambush. His mother Ila was killed in the subsequent Cylon sneak attack. Later on, Apollo married Serina, a reporter-turned-shuttle-pilot who became a reserve Viper pilot. Shortly after their wedding, she was killed by Cylons on Kobol. Apollo then adopted Serina's son, Boxey and became a single father to him.
In the final episode of the series, Apollo becomes romantically involved with Lieutenant Sheba. His best friend is Lieutenant Starbuck.
Apollo is arguably the central character of Battlestar Galactica, as most of the storylines and character relationships revolve around him.
Apollo always flies with Starbuck as his wingman. The exception is in the episode Lost Planet of the Gods, where he flies with Serina in her second and last mission as a Viper pilot. Starbuck and Apollo frequently fly with Lieutenant Boomer as a third wingman.

"Saga of a Star World" is the pilot for the American science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica
With the Colonies in ruins, Adama collects as many survivors from the destroyed Colonies as possible and sends out a call for every surviving civilian ship to embark survivors and to follow the Galactica. The hope is that the Galactica can protect this fleet long enough to find a legendary thirteenth human colony, the last outpost of Man. It is on a planet called Earth, but the location of this lost thirteenth colony is known only to the last lord of Kobol, the planet which was the original home of Man but was abandoned thousands of years earlier when the thirteen colonies migrated to the stars.

Long Lines Of Investors As Starbucks' Stock Arrives On Wall Street

Starbucks, the king of coffee beans, sold its first shares of stock to the public today, and lines were as long as the queues at its 140 locations in seven metropolitan areas.
Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

GATES AND GATES: Preston Thorgrimson Shidler Gates & Ellis initiated a new speakers' program Monday at the Rainier Club. First up was Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates III. (Gates's dad is Bill Gates Jr., a managing partner of the firm.)
About 200 people attended. But, when the server brought the check, she presented it to the wrong Bill Gates. As the Microsoft chairman puzzled over the bill, the audience erupted in laughter. The waitress said, "I just saw the name tag. I'm so embarrassed."
MAYOR WHOOPS: Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris came up one mayor short last Friday. Harris was presenting First Citizen awards to Capt. Al Haynes, who saved lives by piloting a crippled DC-10 into the Sioux City, Iowa, airport and to Gary Brown, emergency-services director for Iowa's Woodbury County.
The chief began by saying, "On behalf of Mayor Charles Royer . . ." The crowd groaned and chuckled.
"Doggone it, I do it every time," said Harris. "I've worked for both men and both names start with `R.' "

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight operated by United Airlines between Denver and Philadelphia via Chicago. On July 19, 1989, the Douglas DC-10 (Registration N1819U) suffered an uncontained failure of its number 2 engine which destroyed all three of the aircraft's hydraulic systems. With no controls working except the power levers for the two remaining engines, it broke up during an emergency landing on the runway at Sioux City, Iowa, killing 110 of its 285 passengers and one of the 11 crew members.

Now joining us here in Los Angeles, another interesting figure associated with the World Trade Center, George Willig who climbed the World Trade Center. He went up Tower #2 in 1977. Why?
GEORGE WILLIG, CLIMBED THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWERS IN 1977: Well, I guess maybe in some ways similar to Phillipe Petit, I was inspired by the buildings. I was actually inspired by Phillipe. I remember his act when he climbed the buildings in 1974. After that, in 1975 another man parachuted from the top of one of the buildings, and I thought one of these days somebody's going to climb one of those buildings.
I actually told some climbing friends from out of town about that concept, and I think it was a couple weeks after that -- again, while I was looking at the World Trade Center at a distance, I thought of that idea, had this image of an inconsequential speck of a human being climbing one of those buildings, and I got this infusion of adrenaline. I got very excited and I felt like it must be my destiny.
KING: So at 6:30 in the morning on May 26 you just show up and climb. Now, what did you grab on to?
WILLIG: I designed special clamping devices that fit into a steel track that go up the building, and they were engineered to hold about 2,000 pounds so they could adequately hold my weight. I would just shift my weight from one piece of equipment to another, and I would just slide the one I wasn't standing on up the track and I'd transfer my weight to the next one, which was higher up, and I would just keep shuffling my way to the top of the building.
KING: You've got wind; each tower could sway approximately three feet from the true center in strong winds. Each tower is more than 21,000 windows. If glass used in the construction of the towers were melted into a ribbon of glass it would run 65 miles long. Did you ever at any point during your trip say, "I'm nuts?"
WILLIG: No. During the year that I was preparing for it, that's when I was thinking I was nuts. When I finally got to doing the climb itself in 1977, I had resolved to just do it. It was a fait accompli, more or less. I had to commit myself.
KING: How long did it take?
WILLIG: It took three and a half hours.
KING: When you got -- where did you go, what floor?
WILLIG: I went to the very top, and I was arrested there, after signing autographs and you know, shaking hands.
KING: Did you ever do jail time for that?
WILLIG: No jail time, no.
KING: What did they have you do?
WILLIG: I was sued by the city of New York for $250,000, I was served with four charges -- reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and unauthorized climbing of a building. Those charges were all dropped a month later, and the lawsuit was actually lowered to a $1.10. The next day, it was announced at a press conference that I went to with Mayor Beame, who was the mayor at that time, they announced that they were lowering the lawsuit to $1.10, one penny for floor, and I paid it right there.

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

She Asked Wrong Guy For A Buck

Even though he's been kicked upstairs, crime keeps happening to newly appointed King County Sheriff Dave Reichert. The busy sheriff sighs and asks, "Why me?"
Last week's incident: On his way home from work, Reichert stopped in Kent for a haircut. Afterward, he was approached by a woman in her late 30s. She said, "I need help. I've run out of gas. I could use a dollar, and then I could get home."
Reichert pulled out a buck and offered to drive the woman to a nearby gas station. She said, "I don't ride with strangers." Reichert explained he was a law officer and would drive her in a police car.
The woman countered that she'd just flagged down a friend and he had offered her a ride.
Sounded odd, but Reichert shrugged and set off for his car. As he was getting behind the wheel, he glanced back and saw the woman had disappeared. Suddenly a car darted out with a man driving. Reichert followed.
The car pulled a U-turn. So did Reichert. Then Reichert saw a pair of eyeballs peering through the rear window.
It was the woman panhandler.
The sheriff kept following, eventually catching up with the couple at a gas station.
When Reichert accosted them, the woman warily asked, "Do you want your dollar back?"
"No," said Reichert. "I'd like to see your I.D." He called for a records check and made an interesting discovery. The guy was clean, but the woman had five outstanding warrants on theft and drug charges.
Reichert patted the woman down, discovering a roll of $1 bills. Within minutes, three other King County patrol cars arrived on the scene.
They had responded after hearing, via radio, that "Car One," the sheriff's car, was involved.
One of the assisting officers told the stunned suspect, "Lady, you've just been arrested by the sheriff."
Chances are the woman wishes she'd picked someone else - anyone else - to panhandle.
Just checking: Gov. Gary Locke's staff yesterday fielded a call to the governor from the White House. Caller was an aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The First Lady had just learned about the governor's middle-of-the-night encounter with a bat. The April 3 incident occurred while the governor was changing his newborn daughter Emily's diaper.
Staffer Chris Thompson says, "The first lady wanted to express her concern." The Lockes are fine, but are receiving rabies shots.

§ 794. Gathering or delivering defense information to aid foreign government
(a) Whoever, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any foreign government, or to any faction or party or military or naval force within a foreign country, whether recognized or unrecognized by the United States, or to any representative, officer, agent, employee, subject, or citizen thereof, either directly or indirectly, any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, note, instrument, appliance, or information relating to the national defense, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, except that the sentence of death shall not be imposed unless the jury or, if there is no jury, the court, further finds that the offense resulted in the identification by a foreign
power (as defined in section 101(a) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) of an individual acting as an agent of the United States and consequently in the death of that individual, or directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information; or any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy.
(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.
(c) If two or more persons conspire to violate this section, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.
(d)
(1) Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall forfeit to the United States irrespective of any provision of State law—
(A) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds the person obtained, directly or indirectly, as the result of such violation, and

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, the Vietnam Conflict, or (often in Viet Nam) the American war occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO).
The Vietcong, the lightly armed South Vietnamese communist insurgency, largely fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region. The North Vietnamese Army engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large-sized units into battle. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search-and-destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery and air strikes.
The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of a wider strategy called containment. Military advisors arrived beginning in 1950. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Involvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. Under a policy called Vietnamization, U.S. forces withdrew as South Vietnamese troops were trained and armed. Despite a peace treaty signed by all parties in January 1973, fighting continued. In response to the anti-war movement, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment in June 1973 prohibiting further U.S. military intervention. In April 1975, North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year.
The war had a major impact on U.S. politics, culture and foreign relations. Americans were deeply divided over the U.S. government’s justification for, and means of fighting, the war. Opposition to the war contributed to the counterculture youth movement of the 1960s and the war contributed towards youth cynicism towards actions of the government.
The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of fatalities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers.

Even though he's been kicked upstairs, crime keeps happening to newly appointed King County Sheriff Dave Reichert. The busy sheriff sighs and asks, "Why me?"
Last week's incident: On his way home from work, Reichert stopped in Kent for a haircut. Afterward, he was approached by a woman in her late 30s. She said, "I need help. I've run out of gas. I could use a dollar, and then I could get home."
Reichert pulled out a buck and offered to drive the woman to a nearby gas station. She said, "I don't ride with strangers." Reichert explained he was a law officer and would drive her in a police car.
The woman countered that she'd just flagged down a friend and he had offered her a ride.
Sounded odd, but Reichert shrugged and set off for his car. As he was getting behind the wheel, he glanced back and saw the woman had disappeared. Suddenly a car darted out with a man driving. Reichert followed.
The car pulled a U-turn. So did Reichert. Then Reichert saw a pair of eyeballs peering through the rear window.
It was the woman panhandler.
The sheriff kept following, eventually catching up with the couple at a gas station.
When Reichert accosted them, the woman warily asked, "Do you want your dollar back?"
"No," said Reichert. "I'd like to see your I.D." He called for a records check and made an interesting discovery. The guy was clean, but the woman had five outstanding warrants on theft and drug charges.
Reichert patted the woman down, discovering a roll of $1 bills. Within minutes, three other King County patrol cars arrived on the scene.
They had responded after hearing, via radio, that "Car One," the sheriff's car, was involved.
One of the assisting officers told the stunned suspect, "Lady, you've just been arrested by the sheriff."
Chances are the woman wishes she'd picked someone else - anyone else - to panhandle.
Just checking: Gov. Gary Locke's staff yesterday fielded a call to the governor from the White House. Caller was an aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The First Lady had just learned about the governor's middle-of-the-night encounter with a bat. The April 3 incident occurred while the governor was changing his newborn daughter Emily's diaper.
Staffer Chris Thompson says, "The first lady wanted to express her concern." The Lockes are fine, but are receiving rabies shots.

She Asked Wrong Guy For A Buck

Even though he's been kicked upstairs, crime keeps happening to newly appointed King County Sheriff Dave Reichert. The busy sheriff sighs and asks, "Why me?"
Last week's incident: On his way home from work, Reichert stopped in Kent for a haircut. Afterward, he was approached by a woman in her late 30s. She said, "I need help. I've run out of gas. I could use a dollar, and then I could get home."
Reichert pulled out a buck and offered to drive the woman to a nearby gas station. She said, "I don't ride with strangers." Reichert explained he was a law officer and would drive her in a police car.
The woman countered that she'd just flagged down a friend and he had offered her a ride.
Sounded odd, but Reichert shrugged and set off for his car. As he was getting behind the wheel, he glanced back and saw the woman had disappeared. Suddenly a car darted out with a man driving. Reichert followed.
The car pulled a U-turn. So did Reichert. Then Reichert saw a pair of eyeballs peering through the rear window.
It was the woman panhandler.
The sheriff kept following, eventually catching up with the couple at a gas station.
When Reichert accosted them, the woman warily asked, "Do you want your dollar back?"
"No," said Reichert. "I'd like to see your I.D." He called for a records check and made an interesting discovery. The guy was clean, but the woman had five outstanding warrants on theft and drug charges.
Reichert patted the woman down, discovering a roll of $1 bills. Within minutes, three other King County patrol cars arrived on the scene.
They had responded after hearing, via radio, that "Car One," the sheriff's car, was involved.
One of the assisting officers told the stunned suspect, "Lady, you've just been arrested by the sheriff."
Chances are the woman wishes she'd picked someone else - anyone else - to panhandle.
Just checking: Gov. Gary Locke's staff yesterday fielded a call to the governor from the White House. Caller was an aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The First Lady had just learned about the governor's middle-of-the-night encounter with a bat. The April 3 incident occurred while the governor was changing his newborn daughter Emily's diaper.
Staffer Chris Thompson says, "The first lady wanted to express her concern." The Lockes are fine, but are receiving rabies shots.

Locke signs identity-theft bill

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke signed legislation yesterday that stiffens penalties for identity theft and makes it easier for victims to get the documents they need to regain control of their lives.
"This bill empowers consumers to protect themselves and re-establish their identities and credit without having to rely only on enforcement of the criminal laws," Locke said as he signed Senate Bill 5449.
State Attorney General Christine Gregoire hailed the legislation as the toughest in the nation and a strong step toward stemming the increase in identity-theft cases.
"We're going to get tough," Gregoire said. "We're going to send a message that we're not going to tolerate identity theft, and, most importantly, we're going to help victims not be re-victimized."
The law, which goes into effect July 22, doubles the maximum sentence for identity theft to 10 years in prison in cases involving more than $1,500. It also doubles the maximum fine to $20,000.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. EST, Eagle 1, a United States Park Police Bell 206L-1 Long Ranger helicopter, N2PP, based at the "Eagles Nest" at Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. and manned by pilot Donald W. Usher and paramedic Melvin E. (Gene) Windsor arrived and began attempting to assist the survivors to shore. At great risk to themselves, the crew worked close to the river surface, at one time coming so close to the ice-clogged river that the helicopter's skids went beneath the surface of the water.
The helicopter crew lowered a line to survivors to tow them to shore. First to receive the line, Bert Hamilton, who was treading water about ten feet from the floating tail, took the single lifeline dangling beneath the chopper and passed it under his arms. The others watched while the helicopter carried him a hundred yards to the Virginia shore and returned. The helicopter pilot had to gently move the survivor across the ice, while avoiding the sides of the bridge and keeping an eye on the crowd.
