Travis Air Force Base
United States Air Force
Remember When ... Milestones of the Golden Bear
By John M. Lacomia, 60th Air Mobility Wing History Office / Published May 19, 2009
TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Team Travis takes a lot of pride in the aircraft that it services and flies, but few on base have garnered as much attention as the Lockheed C-141 "Golden Bear."
When the aircraft was delivered to Travis Air Force Base on April 23, 1965, it was the first operational C-141 Starlifter in the Military Air Transport Service, the predecessor to Military Airlift Command and Air Mobility Command. On that day in 1965, Gen. Howell M. Estes Jr., MATS Commander, delivered the aircraft to the 44th Air Transport Squadron of the 1501st Air Transport Wing (predecessor to the 60th Military Airlift Wing.)
It was not long before the Golden Bear was setting records. From May 25 to 31, 1965, it was the first C-141 to cross the Pacific Ocean when it flew from Travis to Yokota Air Base, Japan in nine hours and twenty minutes. The Golden Bear was chosen along with five other C-141s to perform an unusually-heavy flying and landing schedule between June 1, 1965 and November 1, 1968.
This program was called "Lead The Force" and it was designed to help the Air Force and Lockheed identify mechanical problems in the new aircraft model and could design and install correct modifications before the entire fleet could be affected. It was on May 25, 1968, that the Golden Bear touched down once again at Yokota making its 20,000th landing by a C-141 since May 1965.
The Golden Bear would go on to participate in the first large-scale strategic airlift involving C-141s called Operation Blue Light, Aeromedical Evacuation Missions in Southeast Asia, and Operation Deep Freeze. In 1973, the Golden Bear was chosen to aid in the return of Prisoners of War from Southeast Asia during Operation Homecoming.

TEYLA
Major Sheppard. Have we heard back from Dr. McKay?
SHEPPARD
Not yet.
TEYLA
Word of the discovery has already spread throughout the base.
SHEPPARD
I've noticed.
TEYLA
It is to be expected, of course—faced with prospect of being reunited with loved ones, returning to familiar ground.
SHEPPARD
Yeah, I'd love to go back.
TEYLA
You would consider leaving Atlantis?
SHEPPARD
I just wish I knew I could gate back here. Then I'd go in a heartbeat.
TEYLA
It would be wonderful to see your world.
SHEPPARD
You could help me with the briefing.
TEYLA
I would like that.
SHEPPARD
Hey, you know more about the Pegasus galaxy than anyone. Then there's all those cool Earth things I've talked about—football, ferris wheels…
[Teyla is intrigued.]
SHEPPARD
Oh! Do you remember the last of the popcorn we ate? We can get more.
TEYLA
If we knew we could return.
TECHNICIAN
Unscheduled activation!
INT—ATLANTIS CONTROL ROOM
[Weir, Teyla, and Sheppard arrive.]
TECHNICIAN
It's a radio transmission from Dr. McKay.
WEIR
(into radio)
Rodney?
MCKAY
(over radio)
Elizabeth. I'm done. The component's installed in the DHD, and as you can see—
WEIR
Well done. Sorry, what about the energy readings?
MCKAY
Oh, same as before. All indications are that the gate's drawing power from the atmosphere, and there's enough for an eight-chevron lock.
WEIR
(smiling)
Okay, you stay put. We're on our way.
MCKAY
Right.
EXT—WORMHOLE TRAVEL
EXT—M5S-224, DAY
MCKAY
So are we, uh, ready?
SHEPPARD
What's there to be ready for?
MCKAY
Well, this is sort of a big moment, and I thought we haven't been in contact for some time. I just figured we—
SHEPPARD
We're ready.
WEIR
Go ahead.
[McKay dials the address.]
MCKAY
Please work.
[He hits the activation button. The gate comes to life. McKay smiles.]
WEIR
Stargate Command, this is Dr. Elizabeth Weir of the Atlantis expedition. Do you read? I repeat, this is Dr. Weir. Come in, please.
HARRIMAN
(over radio)
This is Sergeant Harriman of Stargate Command. Whoever you are, this better not be a joke.

INT—MCKAY'S APARTMENT
[The apartment is dark, and there are several dead plants. McKay enters, still in his Atlantis uniform. He pushes the play button on his answering machine.]
FEMALE RECORDED VOICE
You have no new messages.
MCKAY
Hmm, must've been a power failure or something. Anyways…
[He sits on the couch and uses the remote to turn on the TV. He digs around in the couch cushions and finds a half-eaten bag of crispy snacks. He eats one.]
TELEVISION
…There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling the transmission—
[There is a knock at the door.]
TELEVISION
If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper.
[McKay answers the door. An attractive woman is standing there.]
BRUNETTE
(smiling)
Hi.
MCKAY
(awkwardly)
Hi.
INT—LIMOUSINE
[Sheppard is seated in the back, now wearing civilian clothes. Teyla enters. There are shopping bags on the floor, and she's dressed in Earth clothing.]
TEYLA
Thank you, Major.
SHEPPARD
You're welcome.
TEYLA
I have traded in many market places on many worlds—
SHEPPARD
Countries. Countries…
TEYLA
(brightly)
Yes, of course. Countries… But here there are so many different items to choose from.
SHEPPARD
Yeah, you seemed like you were having fun. Hours and hours of fun. But you picked out a nice outfit.
TEYLA
Thank you. I wonder… If we had never suffered the Wraith, would my people have created a civilization such as this?
SHEPPARD
I'm starting to wonder about a few things myself.
TEYLA
What?
SHEPPARD
Nothing feels wrong to you? I don't mean one thing. I mean…everything.
TEYLA
I do not understand.
SHEPPARD
(to driver)
Excuse me, uh…could you take us to the Green Moss park area?
DRIVER
Sure thing.
SHEPPARD
Thank you. I think I'll have a better idea of what's bothering me once we get there.

[Teyla and Sheppard enter. The home is nicely furnished in modern decor, with many 'toys' such as an arcade game and gold clubs. There is a modern sculpture of a helicopter, and a large poster of Johnny Cash on the wall.]
SHEPPARD
Oh, yeah. Just like I left it.
TEYLA
So much space for just one person.
SHEPPARD
Well, a guy's got to have a lot of space. I bet there's still uh…
[He opens the bar refrigerator.]
SHEPPARD
Perfect.
[He takes out two beers, opens them, and hands one to Teyla.]
SHEPPARD
Nice and cold.
TEYLA
And this is…
SHEPPARD
It's called beer.
[Teyla takes a large swig, spilling a bit. She laughs. She looks around the room.]
TEYLA
Is all this for recreation?
SHEPPARD
Yeah, I got pretty much everything you can imagine, don't I?
[He appears troubled.]
TEYLA
What is it?
SHEPPARD
I was just thinking again…about Dr. Weir and everyone else on Atlantis.
TEYLA
Of course. I am sure she is fine. As I am sure they are all fine.
SHEPPARD
Yeah. I'm sure.
[They look at the wide view from the window. Sheppard is still uncomfortable.]

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too.

The NSA sent coded messages to a shadowy Russian on its official Twitter account
Michelle Mark
Feb. 10, 2018, 11:46 PM
The National Security Agency used its public Twitter account to send roughly a dozen coded messages to a shadowy Russian who had attempted to sell them dirt on President Donald Trump, The Intercept and The New York Times reported on Friday.
It was all part of a tentative deal American spies struck with a Russian who had ties to Russian intelligence and had promised to sell back stolen NSA cyberweapons. But the deal eventually fell apart after the Russian failed to deliver the hacking tools and instead kept pushing unverified and compromising information on Trump, which US officials said they were uninterested in.
The Americans agreed to pay $1 million for the tools, but ultimately paid only the first installment of $100,000 before cutting the deal short.
The coded messages they posted on Twitter were meant to prove to the Russian that the US government was really behind the negotiations and willing to move forward, according to The Intercept.
For instance, US officials reportedly told the Russians in advance that the official NSA account would tweet the following message on June 20, 2017: "Samuel Morse patented the telegraph 177 years ago. Did you know you can still send telegrams? Faster than post & pay only if it's delivered."
The message, word for word, appeared that day on the NSA's Twitter account. It's even still posted.
Again in October 2017, officials warned the Russians before the NSA tweeted, "This week in history, Robert Lamphere began working on the Verona program in 1948."
Later that month, another one appeared: "Can you help Kandice the Kangaroo save her baby Joey in this month's #PuzzlePeriodical?" the NSA tweeted.
Finally, in December, the NSA told the Russians it planned to tweet, "Section 702 is a law that can also be a life-saver. Take a look at how #Section 702 protects troops and helps the nation."
When it became clear to US officials that the Russian either did not have the hacking tools or had no intention of selling them, the Americans cut off the deal and warned him to go back to Russia and never return, The Times reported.

Next is a ceremonial fly-by by the last Galactica battle squadron led by Captain Lee Adama. (Music play, ships fly over, people applaud.) And now it is my great pleasure to introduce the last commander of the Battlestar Galactica, Commander Adama. (applause)
Adama: Thank you very much. The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of wearing the uniform can be high, but... (pauses) Sometimes it's too high. You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question: why? Why are we as a people worth saving? We still commit murder, because of greed, spite, jealousy, and we still visit all of our sins upon our children. (we hear the voiceover in Apollo's ship) We refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done. Like we did with the Cylons. We decided to play god, create life. (We see Starbuck listening in her cell.) When that life turned against us, we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it really wasn't our fault, not really. You cannot play god, then wash your hands of the things that you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you've done anymore.

Retirement of Justice Marshall In the East Conference room of the United States Supreme Court, Justice Thurgood Marshall responded to reporters' questions and comments about his retirement from the Court. With good humor, Justice Marshall responded to reporters' questions with sharp and short retorts, and would not comment on decisions made by the Court. He said he was retiring due to his declining health and that race should not be a factor in the selection of his successor. He discredited reports that he was leaving in frustration and anger over the conservative leanings of the current Supreme Court.
The retirement of Justice Marshall would become effective when the Senate confirms a successor.

Honoured at last: A tribute to an inventor who saved millions of lives during World War II
Engineer Alan Dower Blumlein pioneered the first stereo recordings and created a vital radar system
Adam Sherwin Sunday 29 March 2015 18:13 BST
He’s the genius inventor who helped save millions of lives during the Second World War, but whose achievements went unheralded following an early death.
However, this is not the tale of Alan Turing – but Alan Dower Blumlein, who was killed in a plane crash while developing Britain’s superior airborne radar system.
Blumlein will receive long-overdue recognition on Wednesday when a commemorative plaque will be unveiled in his honour during a special ceremony at Abbey Road Studios. The inventor, who died aged 39, was a pioneer who logged 128 patents, including the “moving coil” microphone and the first stereophonic recordings, while working as an engineer for EMI.
He led the BBC team which successfully chose Marconi-EMI electronic 405-line transmission for the new television medium over the cumbersome mechanical alternative.
Like Turing, the brilliant mathematician who cracked the Enigma code, Blumlein, born to a German father and who did not learn to read until he was 13, turned his skills to the war effort.
Blumlein’s revolutionary “binaural recordings” used two microphones, recording separately, with the results played in a single groove through two loudspeakers to create the effect we know as “stereo”.
He incorporated the binaural system into aircraft sound detectors using a cathode ray tube to display the result. This allowed Blumlein’s team to develop an airborne interception system which allowed British planes to detect Germany aircraft by night.
Blumlein was killed in the 1942 plane crash which destroyed the prototype of his H2S radar system, which could locate and detect targets from the air regardless of the weather conditions. News of the accident was initially suppressed but one air chief called Blumlein’s death “a catastrophe”. A new research team completed the radar system.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Society will unveil the plaque at Abbey Road, owned by EMI-Universal Music, during a day of tributes to Blumlein, featuring rarely heard audio and video recordings from his archive and an airing for the world’s first stereo-sound film, Train At Hayes Station.
Does Blumlein’s grandson, also named Alan, believe his achievements are also worthy of a Turing-style feature film?
“Without sounding arrogant – absolutely yes. If you consider that Alan Turing’s ACE Model Computer used circuits developed by my grandfather you truly start to uncover how across the 128 patents that my grandfather filed, so many elements of our modern-day life have a link back to Alan Blumlein.”
He added: “With his work on long-distance telephone line interference, stereo, 405-line TV and radar he was a prolific British inventor and genius.”
Professor Anthony Davies, Emeritus Professor of Electronic Engineering at King’s College London, said: “Blumlein’s many contributions to electronic engineering are not as well known as they should be, and if this plaque helps to remedy that, it will be an extra bonus.
“He was deeply involved in the development of H2S, the radar system developed as a blind-bombing aid, which made a huge contribution to the success of night-bombing raids and which allowed accurate night bombing for the first time by the Allies.”
The plaque recognises Blumlein’s stereo sound achievements of the early 1930s. “All vinyl gramophone records which record stereo in a single groove use his inventions,” professor Davies went on.
“The EMI television system to which he contributed much was the basis of TV technology from the start of TV broadcasting from Alexandra Palace in 1936 until the recent change to digital technology.”

The fascinating story of the man who invented stereo (and pioneered TV and radar too)
Honoured at the famous Abbey Road Studios, Alan Dower Blumlein pioneered all kinds of technologies before his untimely death during a top-secret wartime mission.
BY RICHARD TRENHOLM
APRIL 1, 2015 7:25 AM PDT
When you're rocking out to your favourite music, or surround sound has slapped you in the heart of your favourite movie, you know how important stereo sound is. And it's all thanks to Alan Blumlein, the 20th-century pioneer of various technologies who was inspired to invent stereo after a trip to the movies.
Blumlein was honoured Wednesday by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and record company EMI, where he worked for much of his life. Blumlein's son Simon and grandson, also named Alan, attended the unveiling of the plaque at Abbey Road Studios in St John's Wood, North London, where Blumlein oversaw one of the earliest stereo recordings.
"This is very, very special, because it's for the engineers," Blumlein's grandson Alan told CNET.
Alan Dower Blumlein's stereo breakthrough began in 1931 when he visited the cinema with his wife Doreen. Frustrated that the sound from a single speaker didn't match up with the actors and action on the screen, he told his wife he had a better idea. That same year, Blumlein filed a patent including a whopping 70 ideas related to stereo, some of which are still in use today.
The first stereo discs were cut in 1933. And in 1934, Blumlein recorded in stereo the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, as it performed Mozart's Jupiter Symphony, at the recording facility now known as Abbey Road Studios. It's a fitting location, then, for Blumlein's contribution to audio technology to be commemorated.
The famous recording facility on Abbey Road was opened in 1931 by the Gramophone Company, a predecessor of British music company EMI. Known as EMI Studios until 1970, the studios are synonymous with the Beatles thanks to their 1969 "Abbey Road" album and its iconic cover, but musical powerhouses from Sir Edward Elgar to Pink Floyd, Muse and Lady Gaga have recorded there.
'An incredible mind'
Alan Dower Blumlein was born in London on 29 June 1903 to German-Jewish parents. "Alan wasn't very good at school," says his grandson Alan. "He was a poor reader and a poor writer, but he loved trains and cranes." At the age of 7, Blumlein presented his father with an invoice for repairing the doorbell, an early outing in a glittering career as an electrical engineer that saw him file 121 patents in the space of 13 years and create breakthroughs in a wide range of fields.
Blumlein's early work included measuring the amplitude and frequency response of human ears, and in the 1920s he invented and patented a number of advances in telephone equipment. After moving into recording technology, he developed a new method for cutting wax master discs that gave better sound quality when making records. He improved amplifiers, and developed moving-coil microphones used in EMI recording studios and in the BBC's Alexandra Palace radio studio.
In between, he relaxed at the pictures, and even there his mind was working. "He had an incredible mind, but I think it was probably quite cluttered," says the younger Alan. "So he and his wife went to the cinema and the ballet as a form of relief -- but even while he was relaxing, he was thinking he couldn't understand why the sound didn't follow the actor, and he thought he could fix that."
Blumlein's idea for what he called "binaural sound" covered the whole process, from recording sound to reproducing it for the listener. He conceived the configuration of an orthogonal pair of velocity microphones, which became known as a Blumlein Pair. He also developed a "shuffling" circuit that processed the recording to preserve the direction of the sound.
At the other end, reproducing the sound involved recording the two orthogonal channels in a single groove of a record, cut by a special stereo disc-cutting head. A hybrid transformer then mixed the directional signals for playback.
The first film to utilise stereo sound was "Trains at Hayes Station", shot from a window in the EMI offices in Hayes, West London. Here's a clip, in all its crackly black-and-white 1930s glory:
From 1933 he was assigned to work on technology for television, then in its relative infancy. Innovations attributed to Blumlein include resonant flyback scanning, black-level clamping and the slot antenna. He also had a hand in the development of the 405-line Marconi-EMI system created for the television service from Alexandra Palace.
Like many engineers and scientists, Blumlein's work was interrupted by the second world war. The EMI team was seconded in secret to assist the war effort by using their sonic know-how in early radar systems. Blumlein was a crucial member of a team working on the H2S air-to-surface, used against ground-level targets like U-Boats. The system was only retired after the Falklands in the early 1980s.
Sadly, Blumlein did not live to see the lasting impact his many innovations had. He was killed on 7 June 1942, when the Halifax bomber he was flying in crashed during a trial of the H2S radar system. He was 38.
Today, Blumlein's innovations are still in use. "The engineers at Abbey Road and other studios still use my grandfather's recording technique, the Blumlein pair," his grandson says. "And every single day you see people post pictures online of themselves at home -- amateur drummers, for example -- placing microphones in a Blumlein pair configuration.
"His passion was to conceptualise improvements... his vision was that he wanted to make sure the listener had the best experience."

Unshakeable ties on the USS Wainwright
AJ MORRIS, The Jackson Sun 11:16 p.m. CDT May 18, 2015
On April 18, 1988, Petty Officer Second Class Robert Bennett was deep in the engine room of the USS Wainwright when an emergency message came through the radio.
Operating in the Persian Gulf, the Wainwright was part of a surface action group supporting Operation Praying Mantis — an offensive to neutralize Iranian naval assets in retaliation for their mining of international waters that had damaged the USS Samuel B. Roberts.
Operating a switchboard, Bennett shared a communication line with fire control, who had just informed him an anti-ship missile was headed straight at the Wainwright.
"We didn't have any idea what was going on, but we shared a radio circuit with gun plot, and I heard gun plot say 'Missile inbound, brace for shock,'" Bennett said. "So I grabbed hold of the switchboard and yelled out to everyone in the engine room, 'Missile inbound, brace for shock!' And we just held on and waited."
The ship's countermeasures activated, sending clouds of super-heated aluminum shards around the outside of the vessel to confuse the incoming missile. As a result, the missile missed the Wainwright.
"We heard the chaff going off and we just stood there and waited — and I really thought I was going to die," Bennett said.
"Nobody ever told us the missile missed, but all of a sudden we heard this tremendous woosh sound and we knew that we had fired a missile, and the whole ship erupted in cheers — it was really something."
The Wainwright destroyed three Iranian ships and two aircraft while assisting in the neutralization of Iranian intelligence and facilities in the largest naval surface battle since the end of World War II.
For Bennett, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"It's something that just doesn't happen," Bennett said. "And it was amazing to see how everyone came together perfectly and did their job exactly how they had been trained to do."
The Wainwright's participation in Operation Praying Mantis was just one story in a long legacy of service with the United States Navy.
Three ships in total have sailed under the name USS Wainwright, participating in battle since World War I. The first Wainwright was a Tucker-Class destroyer who sailed from 1914 until 1934. The second Wainwright was a Sim-Class destroyer who sailed from 1938 until 1948, and saw action in several World War II theaters before taking part in the infamous Bikini Atoll atomic tests.
It is a name that conjures up powerful memories for those who served on her, forming a brotherhood that remains strong despite time and distance.
"We're all brothers. Everyone who ever served on this ship just has a brotherhood," Bennett said. "Not that we didn't have our squabbles, but there's a brotherhood."
It is this strong bond that led the creation of the USS Wainwright Veterans Association. Celebrating its 30th year, the association stopped by VFW Post 6496 in Jackson with its traveling museum exhibit trailer.

Belknap class cruiser
The Belknap class cruiser was a class of single-ended guided missile cruisers
When commissioned, the main armament of the Belknap class was a 5 inch/54-caliber Mk. 42 gun on the quarterdeck and a twin-rail RIM-2 Terrier Mk 10 Missile Launcher on the foredeck. The class used two twin 3"/50 caliber guns for AAW. During the NTU program in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the class had its Terrier systems upgraded to utilize standard missiles, the 3 inch guns were replaced with two Harpoon missile launchers, and two Phalanx CIWS systems were installed.

UNIVAC 418
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The UNIVAC 418 was a transistorized, 18-bit word core memory machine made by Sperry Univac. The name came from its 4 microsecond memory cycle time and 18-bit word.
Architecture
Numbers were represented in ones' complement, single and double precision. The TRIM assembly source code used octal numbers as opposed to more common hexadecimal[citation needed] because the 18-bit words are evenly divisible by 3, but not by 4.
UNIVAC 418-II
The first UNIVAC 418-II was delivered in November 1964. It was available with 4,096 to 65,536 (18-bit) words of memory. Memory cycle time was reduced to 2 microseconds. The militarized version was called the UNIVAC 1219 (known as the "Mk 152 Fire Control Computer.") It was part of the Navy's Mk 76 missile fire control system, used to control the AN/SPG-55 radar system.

20 – The Dance of the Vampires

"Vampire, Vampire!" the CIC talker said aboard Ticonderoga. "We have numerous incoming missiles. Weapons free."
The group antiair warfare officer ordered the cruiser's Aegis weapons system into full automatic mode. Tico had been built with this exact situation in mind. Her powerful radar/computer system immediately identified the incoming missiles as hostile and assigned each a priority of destruction. The computer was completely on its own, free to fire on its electronic will at anything diagnosed as a threat. Numbers, symbols, and vectors paraded across the master tactical display. The fore and aft twin missile launchers trained out at the first targets and awaited the orders to fire. Aegis was state-of-the-art, the best SAM system yet devised, but it had one major weakness: Tico carried only ninety-six SM2 surface-to-air missiles; there were one hundred forty incoming Kingfish. The computer had not been programmed to think about that.
Aboard Nimitz, Toland could feel the carrier heeling into a radical turn, her engines advanced to flank speed, driving the massive warship at over thirty-five knots. Her nuclear-powered escorts, Virginia and California, were also tracking the Kingfish, their own missiles trained out on their launchers.
"Red Storm Rising"
The Kingfish were at eight thousand feet, one hundred miles out, covering a mile every four seconds. Each had now selected a target, choosing the largest within their fields of view. Nimitz was the nearest large ship, with her missile-ship escorts to her north.
Tico launched her first quartet of missiles as the targets reached a range of ninety-nine miles. The rockets exploded into the air, leaving a trail of pale gray smoke. They had barely cleared the launch rails when the mounts went vertical and swiveled to receive their reloads. The load-and-fire time was under eight seconds. The cruiser would average one missile fired every two seconds. Just over three minutes later, her missile magazines were empty. The cruiser emerged from the base of an enormous gray arch of smoke. Her only remaining defenses were her gun systems.
The SAMs raced in at their targets with a closing speed of over two thousand miles per hour, directed in by the reflected waves of the ship's own fire-control radars. At a range of a hundred fifty yards from their targets, the warheads detonated. The Aegis system did quite well. Just over 60 percent of the targets were destroyed. There were now eighty-two incoming missiles targeted on a total of eight ships.

I took note of that announcement from South Carolina because Microsoft Corporation had just transported me from Rock Hill, South Carolina, for that 12/7/1998 start date for my job. Absolutely every aspect of that employment in the Microsoft Bellevue office was arranged by Microsoft. A Microsoft employee contacted me to ask if I wanted to go to work at Microsoft and then Microsoft arranged the interview process. A few years later, as I was still working there at Microsoft Corporation with my official United States federal undercover identity and Microsoft re-issued those security badges. I remember that well because they had a guy named Clarence, who was from Hawaii, sitting directly across the aisle from me in another cubicle and he was one of the people I heard spreading rumors that I was a U.S. Navy SEAL, which I denied. I remember when got that new Microsoft security badge, it had the same photo that was taken of me on 12/7/1998, but it was re-issued with a red smudge on my forehead.

Ruling gives Microsoft an edge
By John Hendren
Seattle Times Washington bureau
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court decisively rejected a speedy review of the Microsoft antitrust case yesterday, leaving a lower court to decide whether to uphold a judge's landmark order to split the world's largest software maker in two.
The 8-1 ruling is likely to delay a final decision for as long as two years and marks a significant setback for the Justice Department and 19 states, which had sought to put their case against Microsoft on the fast track. It was the first time in 16 years that the U.S. solicitor general had asked the high court for an expedited antitrust review and the first time the justices said no.
The decision elated officials at Microsoft, which has fared well in the lower court before.
"We're pleased that the judicial process is moving forward, and we look forward to a speedy resolution to the case," said Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, who was in San Francisco for the unveiling of another piece of Microsoft's business strategy.
Some legal observers said the Supreme Court's decision could give Microsoft a critical edge. Instead of one year under an expedited review, it may be that the appeals court will take a year to hear the case and the Supreme Court would take another year.

Letter on the Resignation of United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall
June 28, 1991
Dear Mr. Justice:
It is with deep regret that I acknowledge your letter of retirement from the Supreme Court effective at such time as a successor is qualified.
Our Nation is deeply indebted to you for your long and distinguished public service. Your courageous leadership in the fight for equal opportunity, exemplified by your brief and oral argument in the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education, is a powerful example of how one person's commitment to his convictions can shape a nation's attitude on such a fundamental issue.
Your distinguished service to our country, first on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, as our Nation's 33rd Solicitor General, and capped by a great career on the Supreme Court will also be long remembered.
Barbara and I wish you happiness and every blessing in your years of retirement.
Sincerely,
George Bush

Close Calls with Nuclear Weapons
September 18, 2014
Nuclear weapons are different.
If a nuclear weapon exploded in a major city, the blast center would be hotter than the surface of the sun; tornado-strength winds would spread the flames; and a million or more people could die. Survivors would have no electricity, phones and hospitals would be overwhelmed…if they were still standing.
The opportunities for catastrophe are wide and terrifying with more than 16,000 nuclear weapons in the world today. The possibility of an accidental, mistaken or unauthorized launch is real. The scenarios below show how close we've come.
More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia still keep nearly 2,000 nuclear weapons ready for immediate launch against each other. This dangerous "prompt-launch status" means leaders in a crisis would have just minutes to check facts and decide whether to use nuclear weapons. Command and control systems are not perfect. People make mistakes. Sabotage can happen. Technology has flaws and systems fail.
A nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia could end human life on earth—and could be triggered by a false warning planted by a cyber-terrorist. We know that terrorists are seeking nuclear weapons themselves.
Seven more countries—in addition to the U.S. and Russia—have nuclear weapons: India, Pakistan, China, France, the United Kingdom, Israel and North Korea. Any one of these countries could be the cause of a catastrophe.
How long will we continue to rely on luck?
Who's Minding the Nukes?
On August 29, 2007, at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, 12 cruise missiles were scheduled to be flown to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana to be decommissioned. Instead, six cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads were strapped onto one of the wings of a B-52 bomber not certified to carry nuclear weapons. The nuclear missiles were flown by pilots who did not know they were carrying nuclear weapons to an airbase that did not know they were coming. Once in Louisiana, the weapons sat on the tarmac overnight unguarded. By the time the mistake was discovered by a maintenance crew, the six thermonuclear weapons had been missing for a day and a half and no one in the U.S. Air Force noticed. A former head of the nation’s strategic command said: “I have been in the nuclear business since 1966 and am not aware of any incident more disturbing.”

US Air Force General Scott, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, United States of America: I beg your pardon, Mr. President. You wish the alert cancelled?
Jordan Lyman, President of the USA: I do. I intend to cancel it.
General Scott: May I ask why?
President Lyman: Certain facts have come to my attention. I won't waste time detailing them all now. I'll simply say that I want your resignation tonight... and those of Generals Hardesty, Riley and Dieffenbach as well.
General Scott: Either you are joking, or you have taken leave of your senses. I know of no reason why I should remove my name from the active list voluntarily. Or, for that matter, any of the other Joint Chiefs.
President Lyman: You could give me the reasons, General. But if you want me to itemize them, I shall be glad to do so.
General Scott: Please do.
President Lyman: You have used, without my authority... substantial sums from the Joint Chiefs' Contingency Fund... to establish a base, and train a special unit of troops whose purpose... and even whose existence, was kept secret from me... from officials of the Bureau of the Budget and members of the Congress.
General Scott: And the name of the unit?
President Lyman: You know that unit. It's designation is ECOMCON.
General Scott: I'm afraid your memory fails you, Mr. President. You gave me verbal authorization for the base and the unit. As I recall, we covered many items that day. Perhaps you didn't pay much attention. I assumed you'd inform the Director of the Budget.
President Lyman: What was the date of that meeting, General?
General Scott: I can't recall exactly, but it was right here in this office. Last November, I believe.
President Lyman: You have a record of the date and subject?
General Scott: Certainly, Mr. President
