Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.
I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

"I answered truthfully every single question that was put forth," Gates said. "You have to understand that Mr. Boies made it clear in the negotiations leading up to the case that he is really out to destroy Microsoft. He is really out to make all the good work we've done - and make us look very bad. He's a lawyer asking questions using ambiguous terms."

History of Soviet and Russian espionage in the United States

Since the late 1920s, the Soviet Union, through its OGPU and NKVD intelligence services, used Russians and foreign-born nationals as well as Communist, and people of American origin to perform espionage activities in the United States. These various espionage networks had contact with various U.S. government agencies, transmitting to Moscow information that would have been deemed confidential.
First efforts
During the 1920s Soviet intelligence focused on military and industrial espionage in the United States, specifically in the aircraft and munitions industries, and penetrating the mainline federal government bureaucracies, such as the United States Department of State and War Department.[citation needed] These efforts had mixed results. A front organization was created by a NKVD agent in 1928 for the infiltration and placement of scientists into industry and government: the Federation of Architects, Engineers, Chemists, and Technicians (FAECT). "The FAECT never attracted enough followers to make an impact in labor conditions, but it served the progressive cause in other ways."
Browder and Golos networks
One chief aim was the infiltration, placement, and subversion of American political life at all levels of society. Earl Browder, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA), served as an agent recruiter himself on behalf of Soviet intelligence.
Browder later stated that "by the mid-thirties, the Party was not putting its principal emphasis on recruiting members." Left unstated was his intent to use party members for espionage work, where suitable. Browder advocated the use of a United Front involving other members of the left, both to strengthen advocacy of pro-Soviet policy and to enlarge the pool of potential recruits for espionage work. The illegal residency of NKVD in the US was established in 1934 by the former Berlin resident Boris Bazarov. In 1935, NKVD agent Iskhak Akhmerov entered the US with false identity papers to assist Bazarov in the collection of useful intelligence, and operated without interruption until 1939, when he left the US. Akhmerov's wife, an American who worked for Soviet intelligence, was Helen Lowry (Elza Akhmerova), the niece of CPUSA General Secretary Earl Browder. Recent information from Soviet archives have revealed that Browder's younger sister Marguerite worked until 1938 as an NKVD operative in Europe. She discontinued this work only when Browder himself requested her release from duty, fearful that her work would compromise his position as General Secretary.
In the 1930s, the chief Soviet espionage organization operating in the U.S. became the GRU. J. Peters, headed the secret apparatus that supplied internal government documents from the Ware group to the GRU. Browder assisted Peters in building a network of operatives in the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This group included Alger Hiss, John Abt, and Lee Pressman. Courier for the group at the time was Whittaker Chambers. Browder oversaw the efforts of Jacob Golos and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Bentley, whose network of agents and sources included two key figures at the Department of Treasury, Nathan Gregory Silvermaster and Harry Dexter White.
One early Soviet spy ring was headed by Jacob Golos. Jake Golos (birth name Jacob Golosenko, Tasin, Rasin or Raisen) was a Ukrainian-born Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet secret police (NKVD) operative in the USSR. He was also a longtime senior official of the CPUSA involved in covert work and cooperation with Soviet intelligence agencies. He took over an existing network of agents and intelligence sources from Earl Browder. Golos' controller was the head of the NKVD's American desk, Gaik Ovakimian, also known as "The Puppetmaster", who would later serve a key role in the assassination of Leon Trotsky. Golos was the "main pillar" of the NKVD intelligence network. He had worked with Soviet intelligence from the mid-1930s, and probably earlier. He was not merely a CPUSA official assisting the NKVD (an agent or “probationer” in Soviet intelligence parlance) but held official rank in the NKVD, and claimed to be an oldtime Chekist.
Golos established a company called World Tourists with money from Earl Browder, the General Secretary. The firm, which posed as a travel agency, was used to facilitate international travel to and from the United States by Soviet agents and CPUSA members. World Tourists was also involved in manufacturing fake passports

All investors--not just favored VIPs--will get a rare chance to bid for the Internet search giant's stock

Google Inc., the enormously popular Internet search engine, announced Thursday that it will conduct an initial public stock offering by an almost unheard of method--an auction.
The auction, to be held later this year, means that all investors will have an equal chance of buying stock, unlike past IPOs of hot stocks that brokerage houses made available only to favored clients.
The stock offering is expected to yield several billion dollars in cash for the company. Google's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission said the company expects to raise about $2.7 billion.
The Mountain View, Calif., company is the dominant Internet search engine, with nearly 35 percent of the 3 billion searches conducted in the U.S. each month. Yahoo Inc. is second, with 30 percent.
Google will conduct the stock auction through its Wall Street underwriters, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse First Boston. Details still must be worked out, but investors will be able to contact the firms and bid for a set number of shares at a certain price.
If their bids are accepted, investors can buy stock. Investor demand, not the company, will determine the final price.
It is a process similar to online auctions offered through eBay and other Web sites.
In an open letter filed Thursday with the SEC registration statement, Google's co-founders, Larry Page, 31, and Sergey Brin, 30, explained their decision to sell shares through an auction.
"It is important to us to have a fair process for our IPO that is inclusive of both small and large investors," they wrote.
"An auction is an unusual process for an IPO in the United States. Our experience with auction-based advertising systems has been surprisingly helpful in the auction design process for the IPO. As in the stock market, if people try to buy more stock than is available, the price will go up. And of course, the price will go down if there aren't enough buyers.
"Our goal is to have an efficient market price--a rational price set by informed buyers and sellers--for our shares at the IPO and afterward."
Page and Brin, who started the company 5 1/2 years ago, each own 38.5 million shares of Google stock--some of which they plan to sell in the auction.
In almost all other IPOs, underwriters try to place the stock with preferred clients at a fixed price. In the late 1990s, it was not uncommon for tech stocks to double in price on the first day of trading, enriching the underwriters' favorite clients.
"The auction process is meant to stop what happened in the past, where speculators sweep in and really bid up the price of a stock," said T.K. MacKay, a stock analyst with Chicago-based Morningstar.
If demand is high for the stock, money that might have otherwise gone to speculators in the secondary market will instead go to Google.
"This process insures that Google garners the highest potential windfall," said Scott Kessler, an Internet equity analyst with Standard & Poor's.
Analysts said the money raised by the IPO could be used for acquisitions or to expand operations in Asia and parts of Europe, where Google is less widely used than in the English-speaking world.
Earnings reported
With its announcement of the IPO, the company was for the first time required to report financial results to the SEC.
Google revealed that it earned $105.6 million on revenue of $961.9 million last year. For the first quarter of this year, earnings were up sharply at $64 million, compared with $25.8 million a year ago.
If Google's IPO does well, industry observers say, that doesn't mean the tech sector will again spew out stock offerings that make investors rich.
"Google is a pretty exceptional company," said Walter Price, managing director of RCM Capital, which manages nearly $1 billion. "The bar is still pretty high for other tech IPOs."
Price noted that, unlike most Internet companies, Google is profitable. It also has an established service that has proven popular with its customers.
Anyone looking for a company with top-down management and a fierce determination to cut costs might hesitate before investing in Google. Page and Brin went to great lengths to describe their management style in their letter to the SEC.
"Google is not a conventional company," they wrote. "We do not intend to become one."
They said they plan to focus on long-term growth, even at the cost of short-term results. They will neither provide earnings guidance nor predict quarterly business results.
A management team distracted by a series of short-term targets is as pointless as a dieter stepping on a scale every half-hour," they said.
Page and Brin plan to insulate themselves with a two-class stock structure that will give them veto power over outside investors. The public will buy Class A common stock. But Page and Brin will hold Class B stock, with 10 times the voting power.
Some media companies and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. use similar systems.
Employees might find Google an attractive place to work.
"We provide many unusual benefits for our employees, including meals free of charge, doctors and washing machines," the co-founders wrote. "Expect us to add benefits rather than pare them down over time."
They also said they plan to do well by doing good.
Page and Brin said Google has a corporate goal of "making the world a better place."
"Don't be evil," they wrote.

Dayna leaned over the cherry-picker’s low railing and looked down at Jenny’s upturned face. Gave her the finger. Jenny laughed. First Transcontinental Line
In 1908, AT&T President Theodore Vail made a transcontinental telephone line the company’s top priority, even though he knew that the technology to build one did not exist. The next year, Chief Engineer John J. Carty raised the stakes when he announced in San Francisco that AT&T would have a transcontinental line open in time for the 1915 exposition the city planned to mark the completion of the Panama Canal.
Wanted: Breakthrough
What AT&T needed was a scientific breakthrough, a way to amplify an electrical signal. Carty did two things. He hired a young physicist, Dr. Harold Arnold, to study the question. And he spread the word in the scientific and electrical engineering community that AT&T would pay handsomely for an electrical amplifying device.
On Oct. 30, 1912, independent inventor Dr. Lee de Forest brought his invention, the audion or three-element vacuum tube, to AT&T’s engineering department. It provided a small amount of amplification before the system broke down, with the audion emitting a bright blue haze. Arnold recognized almost immediately that the blue haze was caused by ionization of the residual gasses in the tube. If he increased the vacuum, thereby removing most of the residual gasses, the audion would become a practical amplifier.
Installing amplifiers
On Arnold’s recommendation, AT&T bought the patent rights from de Forest. By summer 1913, AT&T had tested high-vacuum tubes on the long distance network. By fall, the company had begun constructing the line west from Denver, and upgrading the line to the east. On June 17, 1914, AT&T completed the line, erecting the last pole at Wendover, Utah.

There was only one problem: AT&T had completed the line before the Panama-Pacific exposition was ready. So the company waited, and on Jan. 25, 1915, opened the line with great fanfare and celebrations.

Four locations participated in the first call. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone and co-founder of AT&T, led a group of dignitaries in New York. His one-time assistant Thomas Watson, led a group in San Francisco. AT&T President Theodore Vail spoke from Jekyll Island, Ga. And U.S. President Woodrow Wilson spoke from the White House.
At one point during the call, someone asked Professor Bell if he would repeat the first words he ever said over the telephone. He obliged, picking up the phone and repeating “Mr. Watson, come here, I want you.” To which Watson, in San Francisco, replied, “It would take me a week now.”

In 1915, when Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson were asked to re-enact their famous first phone conversation, they became part of a wider effort to demonstrate the emergence of a single telephone system spanning the entire United States. This system was the dream of AT&T president Theodore Vail. It was also a dream that was a long time in coming.
When the telephone first came into use, the signal quickly became distorted as the distance between points increased. A practical long-distance line, it was understood, would put an end to this problem, and in the process, open up immense financial vistas. As a measure of long-distance telephony's importance, AT&T was organized in 1885 as the parent company of Bell Telephone, rather than the other way around.
The search for a solution was already well underway by then. Following the theoretical groundwork laid by Oliver Heaviside in 1887, George Ashley Campbell, an AT&T employee, began developing the loading coils that would keep the signal clear as it traveled. Campbell succeeded in the last months of the 19th century. Unfortunately for him, so had another inventor, Michael Pupin. Hoping to avoid exorbitant fees of a legal battle, AT&T paid Pupin $435,000 for his patents and stopped the dispute in its tracks.
Come January 25, 1915, everything was ready, and Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson were summoned to re-enact their first telephone conversation. The old partners had been given a script, perhaps in case of a technical mishap, but they paid no attention to it. At 4:30 p.m., Bell picked up a telephone in New York and spoke to Watson at the Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco.
After a brief exchange, they hung up, spliced in replicas of their original 1875 telephone onto the line, and continued their lighthearted banter for another 23 minutes, much as they had 38 years earlier. Finally, after recounting the historic events of 1876, Bell uttered the famous phrase: "Watson, come here, I want you." To which Watson replied, "I would be glad to come, Mr. Bell, but it would take more than a week."
Several other famous speakers then took their turn, among them President Woodrow Wilson. The newspapers wrote glowing accounts, some printing the conversations verbatim. The Ziegfeld Follies capitalized on the excitement of the moment with "Hello, Frisco," the hit of the season on Broadway. Long-distance service became available immediately.

The first German V-2 launch at Launch Complex 33 on White Sands Proving Grounds was more notable for the witnesses' reactions. The V-2 was barely in the air on April 16, 1946, when it began flying erratically. At three miles altitude, controllers aborted the flight.
The second V-2 flight, on May 10, 1946, "was a success," the WSMR fact sheet said. Launched after the disastrous April abort, Life featured the event in the magazine's May 17 issue. The WSMR fact sheet described how between 1946 and 1951 "more than 60 V-2s were fired from LC33."

U.S. Bombs Baghdad To Retaliate For Plot To Kill Bush

The United States launched a missile attack against Iraqi intelligence headquarters in Baghdad last night in retaliation for what President Clinton described as a "loathsome and cowardly" attempt to assassinate former President Bush during a visit to Kuwait in April.
Saying a "firm and commensurate response was essential to protect our sovereignty," Clinton condemned Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who he said "ruled by atrocity."
The cruise-missile attack on Iraqi intelligence headquarters lit up the Baghdad night sky, but the city was quiet.
Iraqi U.N. Ambassador Nizar Hamdoun acknowledged the U.S. missiles had struck Iraqi government buildings, but would not say whether the intelligence service was hit. He said some missiles fell in residential neighborhoods.
"There were numerous civilian casualties," Hamdoun said, giving no number. "We're still counting the wounded and dead."
Hamdoun denied Iraq was involved in an assassination attempt.
"The attack was completely unwarranted and unjustified," he said.
In a short televised address to the nation last night, Clinton used blunt language and said the attack was needed to "affirm the expectation of civilized behavior among nations."
The target of the American raid, which was carried out by Tomahawk cruise missiles from a U.S. Navy destroyer and cruiser based in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, was the main headquarters of the Iraqi intelligence service in downtown Baghdad. The missiles struck about 3 p.m. PDT, or early Sunday morning in Iraq.
Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that 23 missiles had been launched and that "all 23 performed as they were supposed to." He said that they had "landed in the target area where they were supposed to be."
In his hastily arranged address, Clinton said: "We should not be surprised by such deeds, coming, as they do, from a regime like Saddam Hussein's, which has ruled by atrocity, slaughtered its own people, invaded two neighbors, attacked others and engaged in chemical and environmental warfare."

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government.

WASHINGTON - The immediate goal was to punish Iraq for its alleged plot to kill former president George Bush, but Saturday's missile strike offered a variety of side benefits, both domestic and international, to a Clinton administration in search of a stronger image.
The episode combined a perfect villain (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein), an outrageous crime (a plot to kill a former president), and a high-tech, low-risk solution (pilotless cruise missiles seeking out Iraq's intelligence headquarters). Clinton's aides, while insisting that the response was entirely justified by the assassination attempt, also were quick yesterday to seize on its public relations benefits.

Navy Blasts 3 Warships, Oil Platform

``They likewise gave a warning,`` Crowe said. ``We could see that a gun was manned on the platform. It did not fire at us. . . . They commenced abandoning. A few people chose not to. We took the platform under fire. They then went into the water. We do not know if any of these people were killed or not.``
He said the Sirri was destroyed by the shelling of 5-inch guns, which caused a major fire.
It was at the Sirri location, Pentagon officials said, that the U.S. vessels first came under attack. They said the Iranian missile boat Joshan, a 10-year-old, 154-foot high-speed patrol craft, ignored warnings from U.S. ships and ``fired at us.``

Operation Praying Mantis was an attack on April 18, 1988, by U.S. naval forces within Iranian territorial waters in retaliation for the Iranian mining of the Persian Gulf during the Iran–Iraq war and the subsequent damage to an American warship.
Battle
Action continued to escalate. The Joshan, an Iranian Combattante II Kaman-class fast attack craft, challenged USS Wainwright (CG-28) and Surface Action Group Charlie. The commanding officer of USS Wainwright directed a final warning (of a series of warnings) stating that the Joshan was to "stop your engines, abandon ship, I intend to sink you". Joshan responded by firing a Harpoon missile at them. The USS Simpson (FFG-56) responded to the challenge by firing two Standard missiles, while Wainwright followed with one Standard missile. The attacks destroyed the Iranian ship's superstructure but did not immediately sink it, so USS Bagley (FF-1069) fired a Harpoon of its own; the missile did not find the target. SAG Charlie closed on the Joshan, with Simpson, then Bagley and Wainwright firing guns to sink the crippled Iranian ship.

Just 2 hours ago, allied air forces began an attack on military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. These attacks continue as I speak. Ground forces are not engaged.
This conflict started August 2d when the dictator of Iraq invaded a small and helpless neighbor. Kuwait -- a member of the Arab League and a member of the United Nations -- was crushed; its people, brutalized. Five months ago, Saddam Hussein started this cruel war against Kuwait. Tonight, the battle has been joined.
This military action, taken in accord with United Nations resolutions and with the consent of the United States Congress, follows months of constant and virtually endless diplomatic activity on the part of the United Nations, the United States, and many, many other countries. Arab leaders sought what became known as an Arab solution, only to conclude that Saddam Hussein was unwilling to leave Kuwait. Others traveled to Baghdad in a variety of efforts to restore peace and justice. Our Secretary of State, James Baker, held an historic meeting in Geneva, only to be totally rebuffed. This past weekend, in a last-ditch effort, the Secretary-General of the United Nations went to the Middle East with peace in his heart -- his second such mission. And he came back from Baghdad with no progress at all in getting Saddam Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait.
Now the 28 countries with forces in the Gulf area have exhausted all reasonable efforts to reach a peaceful resolution -- have no choice but to drive Saddam from Kuwait by force. We will not fail.
As I report to you, air attacks are underway against military targets in Iraq. We are determined to knock out Saddam Hussein's nuclear bomb potential. We will also destroy his chemical weapons facilities. Much of Saddam's artillery and tanks will be destroyed. Our operations are designed to best protect the lives of all the coalition forces by targeting Saddam's vast military arsenal. Initial reports from General Schwarzkopf are that our operations are proceeding according to plan.
Our objectives are clear: Saddam Hussein's forces will leave Kuwait. The legitimate government of Kuwait will be restored to its rightful place, and Kuwait will once again be free. Iraq will eventually comply with all relevant United Nations resolutions, and then, when peace is restored, it is our hope that Iraq will live as a peaceful and cooperative member of the family of nations, thus enhancing the security and stability of the Gulf.
Some may ask: Why act now? Why not wait? The answer is clear: The world could wait no longer. Sanctions, though having some effect, showed no signs of accomplishing their objective. Sanctions were tried for well over 5 months, and we and our allies concluded that sanctions alone would not force Saddam from Kuwait.
While the world waited, Saddam Hussein systematically raped, pillaged, and plundered a tiny nation, no threat to his own. He subjected the people of Kuwait to unspeakable atrocities -- and among those maimed and murdered, innocent children.
While the world waited, Saddam sought to add to the chemical weapons arsenal he now possesses, an infinitely more dangerous weapon of mass destruction -- a nuclear weapon. And while the world waited, while the world talked peace and withdrawal, Saddam Hussein dug in and moved massive forces into Kuwait.
While the world waited, while Saddam stalled, more damage was being done to the fragile economies of the Third World, emerging democracies of Eastern Europe, to the entire world, including to our own economy.
The United States, together with the United Nations, exhausted every means at our disposal to bring this crisis to a peaceful end. However, Saddam clearly felt that by stalling and threatening and defying the United Nations, he could weaken the forces arrayed against him.
While the world waited, Saddam Hussein met every overture of peace with open contempt. While the world prayed for peace, Saddam prepared for war.
I had hoped that when the United States Congress, in historic debate, took its resolute action, Saddam would realize he could not prevail and would move out of Kuwait in accord with the United Nation resolutions. He did not do that. Instead, he remained intransigent, certain that time was on his side.
Saddam was warned over and over again to comply with the will of the United Nations: Leave Kuwait, or be driven out. Saddam has arrogantly rejected all warnings. Instead, he tried to make this a dispute between Iraq and the United States of America.
Well, he failed. Tonight, 28 nations -- countries from 5 continents, Europe and Asia, Africa, and the Arab League -- have forces in the Gulf area standing shoulder to shoulder against Saddam Hussein. These countries had hoped the use of force could be avoided. Regrettably, we now believe that only force will make him leave.
Prior to ordering our forces into battle, I instructed our military commanders to take every necessary step to prevail as quickly as possible, and with the greatest degree of protection possible for American and allied service men and women. I've told the American people before that this will not be another Vietnam, and I repeat this here tonight. Our troops will have the best possible support in the entire world, and they will not be asked to fight with one hand tied behind their back. I'm hopeful that this fighting will not go on for long and that casualties will be held to an absolute minimum.
This is an historic moment. We have in this past year made great progress in ending the long era of conflict and cold war. We have before us the opportunity to forge for ourselves and for future generations a new world order -- a world where the rule of law, not the law of the jungle, governs the conduct of nations. When we are successful -- and we will be -- we have a real chance at this new world order, an order in which a credible United Nations can use its peacekeeping role to fulfill the promise and vision of the U.N.'s founders.
We have no argument with the people of Iraq. Indeed, for the innocents caught in this conflict, I pray for their safety. Our goal is not the conquest of Iraq. It is the liberation of Kuwait. It is my hope that somehow the Iraqi people can, even now, convince their dictator that he must lay down his arms, leave Kuwait, and let Iraq itself rejoin the family of peace-loving nations.
Thomas Paine wrote many years ago: ``These are the times that try men's souls.'' Those well-known words are so very true today. But even as planes of the multinational forces attack Iraq, I prefer to think of peace, not war. I am convinced not only that we will prevail but that out of the horror of combat will come the recognition that no nation can stand against a world united, no nation will be permitted to brutally assault its neighbor.
No President can easily commit our sons and daughters to war. They are the Nation's finest. Ours is an all-volunteer force, magnificently trained, highly motivated. The troops know why they're there. And listen to what they say, for they've said it better than any President or Prime Minister ever could.
Listen to Hollywood Huddleston, Marine lance corporal. He says, ``Let's free these people, so we can go home and be free again.'' And he's right. The terrible crimes and tortures committed by Saddam's henchmen against the innocent people of Kuwait are an affront to mankind and a challenge to the freedom of all.
Listen to one of our great officers out there, Marine Lieutenant General Walter Boomer. He said: ``There are things worth fighting for. A world in which brutality and lawlessness are allowed to go unchecked isn't the kind of world we're going to want to live in.''
Listen to Master Sergeant J.P. Kendall of the 82d Airborne: ``We're here for more than just the price of a gallon of gas. What we're doing is going to chart the future of the world for the next 100 years. It's better to deal with this guy now than 5 years from now.''
And finally, we should all sit up and listen to Jackie Jones, an Army lieutenant, when she says, ``If we let him get away with this, who knows what's going to be next?''
I have called upon Hollywood and Walter and J.P. and Jackie and all their courageous comrades-in-arms to do what must be done. Tonight, America and the world are deeply grateful to them and to their families. And let me say to everyone listening or watching tonight: When the troops we've sent in finish their work, I am determined to bring them home as soon as possible.
Tonight, as our forces fight, they and their families are in our prayers. May God bless each and every one of them, and the coalition forces at our side in the Gulf, and may He continue to bless our nation, the United States of America.
