Police: Seattle man blinded woman to ‘feel gears’ in her head

Boyfriend charged after woman attacked at Wallingford motel

A Seattle man accused of blinding his girlfriend during a bizarre attack at a motel has been charged with assault.

King County prosecutors say Randy Bickhardt used his hands, a pair of scissors and a battery charger to destroy the woman’s eyes during a Dec. 3 attack at a motel in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. Bickhardt, 53, had previously been ordered not to contact the woman, though it appears they were staying together at the time of the attack.

Seattle police were called to the Wallingford Inn Motel shortly before 9 p.m. after reports of a disturbance there. Officers arrived to hear a woman screaming inside one of the rooms.

Knocking on the door, police were greeted by a bloodied Bickhardt, a detective said in charging papers. The 55-year-old woman could be heard crying inside.

According to charging papers, Bickhardt admitted to blinding the woman after smoking marijuana.

“Afterwards he began to see lasers and orbs emanating from the television and came to believe that (the woman) was Satan and he needed to kill her,” the detective told the court. “He stuck his finger into her eyeballs and began to feel gears within her head.”

In addition to her eye injuries, the woman’s facial bones were broken. She’s been stabbed in the ear, according to charging papers, and suffered three broken ribs as well.

Bickhardt told police he and the woman had been dating for three years. A protection order meant to separate him from her was issued in October 2013.

Bickhardt has been charged with first-degree assault. He remains jailed on $350,000 at King County Jail.

John Lennon sparks his first major controversy


In England, no one took much notice of the John Lennon quotation that later set off a media frenzy in America. Chalk it up to a fundamental difference in religious outlook between Britain and America, or to a fundamental difference in sense of humor. Whatever the reason, it was only after the American press got hold of his words some five months later that the John Lennon comment that first appeared in the London Evening Standard on March 4, 1966, erupted into the "Bigger than Jesus" scandal that brought a semi-official end to the giddy phenomenon known as Beatlemania.

In their original context, Lennon's remarks were clearly meant not as a boast, but as a sardonic commentary on the waning importance of religion. "Christianity will go," Lennon said. "It will vanish and shrink....We're more popular than Jesus now." It was only one comment in an interview that covered such wide-ranging topics as gorilla suits and car phones, but it was this comment alone that made its way into the American teenybopper magazine DATEbook several months later, boiled down to the straightforward line, "We're more popular than Jesus."
