USA congress should make it law that anyone uttering "A.I." in public should have to follow it with "squawk! A.I. squawk!"

You must be a world-class imbecile to think there is anything "artificially intelligent" about computer programs.

It's popular in mainstream-media because marketing buzzwords is all those parrots have

As with the story overall, it has caused me to think of something new as I try to understand, because this is all real to me and I have found entertaining so far their story.

The new awareness in my mind today is about my theory formed long ago about "gravity waves"

Hardly anything one could call a "theory" because this is just random stuff I think about

That is a term I have used before to explain two important observations: conspiracy of people, for one, and "conspiracy" of weather for the second

As humans, there is absolutely nothing about us as individuals - our psyche - that exists beyond the physical, chemical molecules stored physically in the organic tissue of our human brain. That is us. That is the one and only cause of us as individual person

So, trying to explain to myself a possible method of external influence on those people I see doing weird stuff - such as people ranting that high-amplitude modulation radio waves "made him do it" - I am thinking of "gravity waves"

Astronomers find atmosphere around a solar system object that shouldn’t have one

Ashley Strickland, CNN

Mon, May 4, 2026 at 5:39 PM PDT 5 min read

Astronomers have detected a thin atmosphere around a tiny celestial body in the outer solar system for the first time — an object previously thought to be too small to support the presence of an atmosphere.

Thousands of frozen, rocky bodies called trans-Neptunian objects, or TNOs, exist in the Kuiper Belt on the edge of our solar system, remnants from its formation 4.5 billion years ago.

During a rare observation opportunity, astronomers in Japan spotted the thin shell of an atmosphere around a TNO known as (612533) 2002 XV93, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Make-make (2005 FY9)

Breaking News

On November 21, 2012, astronomers using seven different Earth-based telescopes (including three operated by the European Southern Observatory) announced that Make-make may lack a "significant atmosphere" like Pluto or Sedna. Observed while occulting a distant star (NOMAD 1181-0235723), the dwarf planet appears to have an albedo of about 0.77, which is comparable to that of dirty snow, and is higher than that of Pluto, but lower than that of Eris. When considered with earlier observations, the new measurements indicate that Make-make has a density of 1.7 ± 0.3 grams per cubic centimeter, which enabled the astronomers to deduce that the dwarf planet has the shape and appearance of an oblate spheroid — a sphere flattened slightly at both poles — with axes of 1,430 ± 9 kilometers and 1,502 ± 45 kilometers (889 ± 6 to 933 ± 28 miles). Make-make does not appear to have a global atmosphere at a level of one thousandth of that of Pluto's atmosphere, but it may have an atmosphere that only covers part of the surface (ESO new release; and Jeff Hecht, New Scientist, November 21, 2012).

The Dwarf Planet

On July 29, 2005, a team of astronomers (including Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David Rabinowitz) announced the discovery of a planetary body (2005 FY9) that appeared to be somewhat smaller than Pluto (more from the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes and Licandro et al, 2006). The new name Makemake belongs to the god who created humanity in the South Pacific culture of Easter Island (or "Rapa Nui" in Polynesian), which was proposed by its discovery team, which discovered the object around Easter on March 31, 2005.

Site cleared for Riverfront Park fountain

By Mike Prager

The roar of a chain saw filled the air at Riverfront Park on Thursday as workers began clearing the path for construction of a new fountain at the park s entrance along Spokane Falls Boulevard.

The $1.5 million fountain designed so that people can walk and play among its many water jets is one of two large-scale improvements being undertaken on the south side of the park this year.

Workers last month removed the park s vintage gondola as part of a $2.5 million upgrade of the breathtaking ride above lower Spokane Falls and gorge.

At the fountain site at Spokane Falls Boulevard and Howard Street, a demolition crew Thursday ripped out a small food concession building and cut down two sycamore trees standing in the way of the project.

Next week, crews will begin removing pavement as part of the job of digging a 14-foot-deep hole to contain the fountain s hidden reservoir vault, said Dan Seibel, superintendent for Walker Construction of Spokane, the general contractor on the job.

A large vehicle pullout area near the Carousel is going to be blocked off during construction and will eventually become part of the fountain s pedestrian plaza. The pullout is frequently used by school groups and visitors, who will now have to go elsewhere for loading and unloading.

Work is expected to be completed in August, Seibel said. Much of the initial work on the vault system will take place below ground level.

"It's going to create a real grand entryway to the park," said Park Board President Jeff Halstead. "I think it will be a great gathering place for people."

The idea for the fountain dates to the creation of Riverfront Park in the 1970s, but it gained momentum in the 1990s when the city Park Board and Rotary Club 21 members teamed up to finance the project.

Rotary has raised $850,000 in contributions and is still seeking donations. The Park Board has authorized spending $550,000 out of a voter-approved park bond issue dating to 1999.

Proponents said the fountain will create a free summertime play feature in the heart of the city. It will also become a prominent piece of civic art with year-round displays of water, colored lights, music and even winter ice formations.

The work of Spokane artist Harold Balazs is being incorporated into columns that will support an overhead fountain sculpture. More than 150 jets capable of throwing 3,500 gallons of water a minute will send out a variable pattern of mists and streams from ground level to a height of 40 feet.

The underground vault will recapture the water and filter it so that users can safely play in the sprays. The fountain will be accessible to wheelchairs.

Perron Collaborative, of Spokane and Portland, has been heading up design of the project. It enlisted the fountain expertise of CMS Collaborative, of Santa Cruz, Calif. The electrical subcontractor on the job is Power City Electric, of Spokane. A crew from Rob's Demolition of Spokane was hired for the initial clearing Thursday.

Also this year, the parks department is going to revise the landscaping at the east end of the park where a small performance area is tucked behind trees and a low ridge. One of three wooden foot bridges is slated to receive new decking as well.

Subject: Orlando

You sent me that photo of you and me from that day I graduated US Navy basic training in Orlando Florida in July 1984.

Do you have anyway of knowing the precise date that photo of us was taken?

I also want to know if you know the precise date we all were at the Disney park in Orlando.

My official military records tell me I left basic training on July 16th but I don't think that was the date we graduated.

My guess is we were at Disney on the 14th or the 15th. Graduation was a Friday if I remember correctly and that might have been the 13th.

History

Scope Trial

The Scopes Trial, also known as a the Scopes Monkey Trial, was the 1925 prosecution of science teacher John Scopes for teaching evolution in a Tennessee public school, which a recent bill had made illegal. The trial featured two of the best-known orators of the era, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, as opposing attorneys. The trial was viewed as an opportunity to challenge the constitutionality of the bill, to publicly advocate for the legitimacy of Darwin s theory of evolution, and to enhance the profile of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

BUTLER ACT

The theory of evolution, as presented by Charles Darwin and others, was a controversial concept in many quarters, even into the 20th century.

Concerted anti-evolutionist efforts in Tennessee succeeded when in 1925, the Tennessee House of Representatives was offered a bill by John W. Butler making teaching evolution a misdemeanor. The bill was passed six days later almost unanimously with no amendments.

When the ACLU received news of the bill s passage, it immediately sent out a press release offering to challenge the Butler Bill.

JOHN SCOPES

What became known as the Scopes Trial began as a publicity stunt for the town of Dayton, Tennessee.

A local businessman met with the school superintendent and a lawyer to discuss using the ACLU offer to get newspapers to write about the town. The group asked if high school science teacher John Scopes would admit to teaching evolution for the purposes of prosecution.

Scopes wasn't clear on whether he had precisely taught the subject, but was sure he d used materials that included evolution. Scopes taught physics and math, and while he said he accepted evolution, he didn t teach biology.

It was announced to newspapers the next day that Scopes had been charged with violating the Butler Act, and the town wired the ACLU to procure its services. The Tennessee press roundly criticized the town, accusing it of staging a trial for publicity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_controlman

Fire controlman

From Wikipedia

Fire controlman (abbreviated as FC) is a United States Navy occupational rating. Often confused with being fireman on board a ship, FCs actually operate advanced weapons systems, whereas Damage Controlman (DC) are actually the shipboard firefighters.

FCs typically operate weapon systems on-board surface combatant ships. They are trained in the repair, maintenance, operation and employment of weapons such as the Tomahawk missile system, the close-in weapons system, the 5"/54 caliber Mark 45 gun weapon system and its associated MK86 or MK160 gun fire control system, the MK92 gun fire control system (on frigates) the Sea Sparrow missile system, and the Harpoon missile systems. These include their associated computer and sensor packages. Their job is somewhat unusual in that they are trained to troubleshoot and repair their systems, as well as operate them. These responsibilities are typically split up between different ratings for various types of electronic equipment.

In essence, they operate the weapons sensors and tracking devices, from first detection through firing the weapons, to defend the ship against tactical threats or to make offensive strikes against hostile targets.

Another area of responsibility for FCs is the Aegis weapon system, which includes one of the most powerful air-search sea-based radars, the SPY-1, as well the MK99 fire control system, used for terminal guidance of Standard missiles, and the Aegis computer suite.

History

According to the official history documented by the U.S. Navy, the fire controlman rating was established in 1941, when it was split off from the gunner's mate rating. It was actually created much earlier than this, as US Navy Muster Reports account for FCs well before then. It is commonly believed that the rate came into existence at some point in the 1920s. Fire controlmen were highly skilled technicians responsible for the operation of various forms of range finding gear, as well as the solving of ballistics calculations to control the firing of the ship's guns. These skills were employed initially for naval gunfire support and surface combat, but during World War II, their responsibilities expanded into anti-aircraft warfare as well.

In 1957, as various electronics such as tracking radars and computers became more widespread, the fire controlman rating was merged into the fire control technician (FT) rating which had been created in 1948, with specific sub-specialties for gunnery (FTG), missiles (FTM), and submarines (FTU). Later, the FTU designation was split into two specific sub-specialties for torpedoes (FTG) and ballistic missiles (FTB).

In 1985, the Navy re-established the fire controlman rating to separate those sailors in the surface FTG and FTM sub-specialties from those assigned to submarines, with the latter retaining the fire control technician rating.

The fire controlman rating insignia is a coincidence or stereoscopic rangefinder, with two lightning bolts (called "sparks") signifying the technical skills required. The lightning bolts were introduced when the rate was re-established in 1985.

FCs maintain the control systems used in aiming and firing weapons on all equipped ships. Complex computers, electronics, and electrical and hydraulic equipment are required to ensure the accuracy of guided missile, surface, and anti-aircraft fire control systems. FCs are responsible for the operation, routine care, and repair of this equipment, which includes radars, computers, weapons-direction equipment, target-designation systems, gyroscopes, and rangefinders.

Rangefinder

From Wikipedia

A rangefinder (also rangefinding telemeter, depending on the context) is a device used to measure distances to remote objects. Originally optical devices used in surveying, they soon found applications in other fields, such as photography, the military, and space travel. They were especially useful for finding the range of a target, such as in naval gunnery and anti-aircraft artillery. The word telemeter is derived from Ancient Greek 'distant, far away' and 'something used to measure'.

Designs

The first rangefinder telemeter was invented by James Watt in 1769 and put to use in 1771

Modern rangefinders use an electronic technology such as lasers or radar

Rangefinders may be used by users of firearms over long distances, to measure the distance to a target to allow for projectile drop. Until the development of electronic means of measuring range during the Second World War, warships used very large optical rangefinders—with a baseline of many meters—to measure range for naval gunnery.

But, if this Williams received only a light dusting, and we were barely into production one, that means that the effects are much more powerful than we had thought. Much more powerful.

Jude Andrews: Would you like to see this janitor? Interview him? Examine him?

Dr. Richard X. Toddhunter: Yes, at once. Of course. Are you joking? There must be tests. There must be extensive testing. We'll start tomorrow. No, tonight, tonight. I want him admitted to the infirmary. I want to do the premim myself.

Jude Andrews: There's a slight problem.

Dr. Richard X. Toddhunter: Problem? What problem?

Jude Andrews: The janitor has split. Taken a powder. On the lam.

Dr. Richard X. Toddhunter: He's run away?
