In an office, my boss's boss, was telling me that I had made history today. She said something about me proving how a single person can make a difference. She handed me some stuff including a chain that you use for dog tags. I was looking at it and there was something about it being too long, or needing to have some links taken out of it. I don't recognize me boss's boss, but my boss was familar. The senior person told me that my boss appreciate's people that are passionate about their work, after I was commenting on how much I enjoy my work.
I have also been thinking today again about the distinction between free will and mind control. The exhausting part about all this, as really with any kind of direction, is from rejecting the advice I don't want to follow. That is the stuff I don't remember, the advice or direction I didn't want to follow.

It was August 13th, according to my journal entries, when I realized that all the thoughts I was having about being in the space program were actually in the past and not in the future, as I had been thinking. Development
The development of the Mk 41 began in 1955 with a USAF requirement for a Class B (high-yield, over 10,000 lb/4,545 kg) weapon. It was based on the "Bassoon" test device first fired in the Redwing Zuni test of 27 May 1956. An ICBM warhead version of the weapon was cancelled in 1957.
Composition
The Mk 41 was the only three-stage thermonuclear weapon fielded by the U.S. It had a deuterium-tritium boosted primary, probably with lithium-6-enriched deuteride fuel for the fusion reaction. Two versions were deployed, Y1, a "dirty" version with a tertiary stage encased with U-238, and Y2, a "clean" version with a lead-encased tertiary.
It was the highest-yield nuclear weapon ever deployed by the United States, with a maximum yield of 25 megatons.
Physical characteristics
The weapon was 12 ft 4 in (3.76 m) long, with a body diameter of 52 in (132 cm). It weighed 10,670 lb (4,850 kg). It was carried only by the B-52 Stratofortress and B-47 Stratojet. It could be deployed in free-fall or retarded (parachute) configuration, and could be set for airburst, groundburst, or laydown delivery.
Service life
The Mk 41 (designated B41 from 1968 on) entered service in 1961. About 500 of these weapons were manufactured between September 1960 and June 1962. The Mk 41 was progressively phased out of service from 1963 in favor of the B53 nuclear bomb. The last B41s were retired in July 1976.

Captain Apollo
Captain Apollo is the name of a fictitious character in the original Battlestar Galactica television series. He was played by Richard Hatch, who would also later appear as the character of Tom Zarek in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series in 2005.
Apollo was a Viper spacefighter pilot of the Battlestar Galactica, and the son of Commander Adama. (A diary entry from Adama in one of the novelizations based on the original television series says that he was named for one of Adama's squadron mates from his time aboard the battlestar Cerberus.) His sister is Lieutenant Athena, and his mother was Ila.
Apollo's history has been marred by tragedy. The loss of the Twelve Colonies deprived him of not only his home, but many of his personal relationships. His brother Zac was shot down by a Cylon ambush. Zac's viper was damaged, and Apollo left him behind in order to warn the Galactica of the ambush. His mother Ila was killed in the subsequent Cylon sneak attack. Later on, Apollo married Serina, a reporter-turned-shuttle-pilot who became a reserve Viper pilot. Shortly after their wedding, she was killed by Cylons on Kobol. Apollo then adopted Serina's son, Boxey and became a single father to him.
In the final episode of the series, Apollo becomes romantically involved with Lieutenant Sheba. His best friend is Lieutenant Starbuck.
Apollo is arguably the central character of Battlestar Galactica, as most of the storylines and character relationships revolve around him.
Apollo always flies with Starbuck as his wingman. The exception is in the episode Lost Planet of the Gods, where he flies with Serina in her second and last mission as a Viper pilot. Starbuck and Apollo frequently fly with Lieutenant Boomer as a third wingman.

On a distant outpost at the edge of the final frontier, an untested crew embarks on an unprecedented journey.
For six days during Stardate 43997, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise was held captive by a sinister race called the Borg. The Borg altered the captain's appearance and mind and forced him to lead an attack against the Federation, during which the U.S.S. Saratoga was all but destroyed. One of the Saratoga's officers, Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko, managed to escape with his young son Jake. Unfortunately, his wife did not survive.
Three years later, a reluctant Sisko and his even more reluctant son are transferred to the space station Deep Space Nine in Bajoran territory. Now a Commander, Sisko has been ordered to oversee the repair of the giant space station, which was heavily damaged during a period of Cardassian military occupation.

Benjamin Lafayette Sisko, played by Avery Brooks, is the main character of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Deep Space Nine is the third of five television series set in the Star Trek universe.
Sisko eventually transferred to the USS Saratoga as its first officer. In early 2367, the Saratoga was one of the Starfleet vessels involved in the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg. Locutus, a Borg drone created from the assimilation of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, uses Picard's knowledge of Starfleet tactics to annihilate the Starfleet force; Jennifer Sisko is among the 11,000 casualties.
Afterward, Sisko took a position at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars, overseeing the development of new ships, including the USS Defiant, which was created specifically to contend with the Borg threat.
Deep Space Nine
In 2369, Sisko is assigned to the Bajoran sector to command space station Deep Space Nine and to help Bajor's recovery from the recently-concluded Cardassian occupation, shepherding them toward possible membership in the United Federation of Planets. Sisko and his son Jake reluctantly take up residence on the station. Recognizing that the then decrepit station is not an "ideal environment" in which to raise a son, Sisko contemplates resigning his commission. Adding to Sisko's discomfort is the presence of Jean-Luc Picard, who briefs him on his mission. Sisko continues to harbour resentment toward Picard for his role, however unwilling, in the death of his wife.

'Copyright infringement' (or copyright violation) is the unauthorized use of material that is covered by copyright law, in a manner that violates one of the copyright owner's exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works.
First element: establishing ownership of a valid copyright
A plaintiff establishes ownership by authorship (by the plaintiff itself or by one who assigned rights to the plaintiff) of (1) an original work of authorship that is (2) fixed in a tangible medium (e.g. a book or musical recording). Registration is not required for copyright itself, but in most cases is a jurisdictional requirement to bring the suit. Registration is also useful because it gives rise to the presumption of a valid copyright, and eliminates the innocent infringement defense, and (if timely made) it allows the plaintiff to elect statutory damages, and be eligible for a possible award of attorney fees.
Works that are not sufficiently original, or which constitute facts, a method or process cannot enjoy copy protection.. U.S. Courts do not recognize the "sweat of the brow" doctrine, which originally allowed protection for those who labored to collect and organize facts. To combat this, business which assemble databases of information have relied on contract law where copyright law offers no protection. For a work to be original, it must possess a "modicum of creativity", which is a "low threshold" although some creativity must exist.
Copyright protects the fixed expression of ideas, but not the ideas themselves. (Ideas are protected by patents). Nevertheless, an expression must exist in a fixed tangible medium. A movie script writer who discusses a plot idea which has not yet been written would not be protected if another heard his idea and wrote a screenplay himself. Whether RAM constitutes a "fixed medium" is a contentious issue in copyright litigation because of the transitory nature of RAM.
Second element: establishing actual copying
A plaintiff establishes actual copying with direct or indirect evidence. Direct evidence is satisfied either by a defendant's admission to copying or the testimony of witnesses who observed the defendant in the act. More commonly, a plaintiff relies on circumstantial or indirect evidence. A court will infer copying by a showing of a "striking similarity" between the copyrighted work and the alleged copy, along with a showing of both access and use of that access. A plaintiff may establish access by proof of distribution over a large geographical area, or by eyewitness testimony that the defendant owned a copy of the protected work. Access alone is not sufficient to establish infringement. The plaintiff must show a similarity between the two works, and the degree of similarity will affect the probability that illicit copying in fact occurred in the court's eyes. Even then, the plaintiff must show that the copying amounted to improper appropriation.
Indeed, the US Supreme Court has held that not all copying constitutes infringement and a showing of misappropriation is necessary.
Third element: establishing misappropriation
A copyrighted work may contain elements which are not copyrightable, such as facts, ideas, themes, or content in the public domain. A plaintiff alleging misappropriation must first demonstrate that what the defendant appropriated from the copyrighted work was protectible. Second, a plaintiff must show that the intended audience will recognize substantial similarities between the two works. The intended audience may be the general public, or a specialized field. The degree of similarity necessary for a court to find misappropriation is not easily defined. Indeed, "the test for infringement of a copyright is of necessity vague." Two methods are used to determine if unlawful appropriation has occurred: the subtractive method and the totality method.
The subtractive method, also known as the "abstraction/subtraction approach" seeks to analyze what parts of a copyrighted work are protectible and which are not. The unprotected elements are subtracted and the fact finder then determines whether substantial similarities exist in the protectible expression which remains. For instance, if the copyright holder for West Side Story alleged infringement, the elements of that musical borrowed from Romeo and Juliet would be subtracted before comparing it to the allegedly infringing work because Romeo and Juliet exists in the public domain.
The totality method, also known as the "total concept and feel" approach takes the work as a whole with all elements included when determining if a substantial similarity exists. The individual elements of the alleged infringing work may by themselves be substantially different from their corresponding part in the copyrighted work, but nevertheless taken together be a clear misappropriation of copyrightable material.

Already, programming executives are predicting that the coming season will be the most exciting and competitive in years.
The hallmark of the new season will be family comedies that will unleash hordes of child actors, at least three new shows featuring home videos, and several that feature original musical scores.
The competition among networks will almost surely grow more intense, if only because of the rapidly emerging Fox network, which is adding nine new shows in the fall, as many as CBS and NBC each. ABC, once identified as the fastest-rising network, will add six.
The NBC show already being talked about - even before most people have seen the pilot - is ''Fresh Prince of Bel Air,' a comedy with the rap singer Wil Smith playing a black teen-ager transplanted from inner-city Philadelphia to the good life in California. Even executives at the other networks acknowledge that NBC may have found the hottest new star of the season.

Pseudologia fantastica, or pathological lying, is one of several terms applied by psychiatrists to the behaviour of habitual or compulsive lying.
It was first described in the medical literature in 1891. One definition of pathological lying is the following:
Pathological lying is falsification entirely disproportionate to any discernible end in view, may be extensive and very complicated, and may manifest over a period of years or even a lifetime.
The defining characteristics of pseudologia fantastica are that, first, the stories are not entirely improbable and often have some element of truth. They aren't a manifestation of delusion or some more wider form of psychosis: upon confrontation, the person can acknowledge them to be untrue, even if unwillingly. "Darmok" is an episode of the television science fiction series Star Trek: The Next Generation
The episode examines the interactions between the USS Enterprise's crew and a race called "The Children of Tamar." A Tamarian captain abducts Captain Picard in an eager attempt to bridge their language gap through archetypal, intense shared experience. The Enterprise captain and crew must decipher the Tamarian's metaphorical language, or risk failing in the opening of diplomatic relations and, worse, losing Captain Picard to a meaningless death at the hands of an entity with the capability to disappear.
The story centers on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dathon of the Tamarian race (Paul Winfield). The Tamarian language is unintelligible to the Starfleet's universal translators, because it is too deeply rooted in local metaphor, so its sentences do not have any meaning to other civilizations. When the Tamarians realize that this attempt has failed, the Tamarian captain gives the order to have Picard and himself transported to the planet El-Adrel IV, which is occupied by a hostile entity.
While Picard and Dathon are on the planet, the crew of the Enterprise attempts to piece together some kind of meaning in the actions and words of the Tamarians. Through the use of research, Troi and Data figure out the basic structure of the language, but this does not lead to further ability for communication. On the other hand, through the use of situational knowledge and rudimentary sign language, Picard begins to understand the semantics of the Tamarian language, which is completely based on allusions to Tamarian folklore. Unfortunately, during the climax, the Enterprise and the Tamarians enter battle with each other. At the same time, Picard and Dathon begin a battle with the dangerous entity inhabiting the planet, which results in Dathon's death. In an effort to communicate something of Earth's folklore to Dathon, Picard retells part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, concluding with Gilgamesh mourning for his slain companion Enkidu, much like Picard's own
sorrow at Dathon's imminent death.

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 19, 1996 — As part of its continuing examination of software industry issues, the Justice Department has notified Microsoft that it will receive another written request for information. The last requests to Microsoft were issued in the summer of 1995.
"It appears that this request was prompted by complaints from competitors which are reminiscent of allegations that were thoroughly reviewed in the past," said William H. Neukom, Microsoft's Senior Vice President for Law and Corporate Affairs. "Internet Explorer 3.0 is consistently rated better than competing technology and is winning strong consumer support. In response, some of our competitors have resorted to a public relations campaign of baseless allegations designed to divert attention from the quality of our technology. It is disappointing that our competitors continue to seek government intervention in the competitive process rather than concentrating on improving their products."
"The facts will show that Microsoft is competing vigorously and legally, and our efforts are benefiting consumers by spurring greater innovation, better products, and lower prices," he said. "We intend to cooperate with the Justice Department."

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

The 1983 Beirut barracks bombing was a major incident on October 23, 1983, during the Lebanese Civil War. Two truck bombs struck separate buildings in Beirut housing U.S. and French members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon, killing hundreds of servicemen, the majority being U.S. Marines.
At around 6:20 a.m., a yellow Mercedes-Benz truck drove to Beirut International Airport, where the 1st Battalion 8th Marines under the 2nd Marine Division had set up its local headquarters. The truck had been substituted for a hijacked water delivery truck. The truck turned onto an access road leading to the Marines' compound and circled a parking lot. The driver then accelerated and crashed through a barbed wire fence around the parking lot, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through a gate and drove into the lobby of the Marine headquarters. The Marine sentries at the gate were operating under rules of engagement which made it very difficult to respond quickly to the truck. By the time the two sentries had locked, loaded, and shouldered their weapons, the truck was already inside the building's entry way.
The suicide bomber detonated his explosives, which were equivalent to 5,400 kg (12,000 pounds) of TNT. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story cinder-block building into rubble, crushing many inside.

It would make an amusing headline: ''Microsoft Internet browser threatens national security."
It might even be true.
The bugginess of Microsoft's Internet Explorer was sufficiently disturbing to the Department of Homeland Security that the agency issued a warning about it in April. It seems that a feature of the browser made it possible for somebody to trick it into running a piece of rogue software. The warning noted that several features of Internet Explorer make it a happy hunting ground for computer vandals, and suggested that it might be prudent to choose a different browser.
Prudent, indeed. In the past two weeks, security experts have identified two cunning attempts to exploit weaknesses in the Microsoft browser. Each infects computers with a bit of software that captures keystrokes and relays them to criminals unknown. Since people often type in credit card numbers and other sensitive data, the potential for harm is immense.
Microsoft last week released a patch to repair the problem. But some software security experts think Internet Explorer's problems are so deeply embedded that only a major overhaul will put things right. That, or a new browser from somebody else.

WASHINGTON – President Bush today chose federal appeals court judge Michael Chertoff to be his new Homeland Security chief, turning to a former federal prosecutor who helped craft the early war on terror strategy.
Chertoff would replace Tom Ridge, the department's first chief. "He leaves some very deep shoes to fill," Chertoff said of Ridge.

Picard doesn't disagree with the protests, but is compelled to follow orders. He later confides to First Officer William T. Riker that the reason Starfleet is keeping the Enterprise away from the Borg is due to Picard's history with them.

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.
This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV. My hope is that this situation will end soon and then some third person will make arrangements where we can meet and I can determine if this was all my imagination.

I had a very clear dream of me back in uniform and given a new assignment on a base. I can remember seeing that I was wearing the USN Captain insignia on my khakis. I walked into a room where a change of command was going on. I'm not sure if I was told this in the dream or if I am assuming that is what's happening. I know or assume that the two officer's in the change of command were subordinate officers to me and that they were Commander's. Their command was a subordinate command to mine. I remember from the dream shaking hands with one of them and introducing myself as Captain. I can't remember the name I gave her but I think I said Captain Thomas Ray. There is also some kind of element to that part of the dream; something about it seeming silly to introduce myself by stating my rank because that was obvious or I was stating the obvious. And another unusual part was that they wouldn't tell me which one of them was taking command during that ceremony
and which one was relinquishing command. I felt comfortable being back in that role, but yet, I felt as though I was still missing a few too many pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is my mind, for my comfort. I probably serve better now for a while as an independent operative rather than an officer in charge of a large command where subordinates have certain expectations of their Captain.

3. "My Moon My Man"

I wrote earlier about how that track "New Moon On Monday" makes me think it reflects the final flight to Earth's Moon with Apollo 17. Apollo 17 landed on the Moon on 12/11/1972, which was a Monday. But it also made me think of 6/7/1976. That is the day I recognize as when I landed on the Saturn moon Phoebe. I have been thinking that "New Moon On Monday" was Apollo 17 because that was a new trip to the Earth's Moon. But 6/7/1976 was a visit to a different moon, and during that mission, was the first visit I made to any moon. My first stop was at Mars, which is a planet. And then the Jupiter moon Callisto was the next moon after Phoebe. Those lyrics and sound effects make me think the song represents several trips and that it includes Apollo 17 and the Jupiter moon Phoebe.

Obama Releases Official Space Policy; Mars Society Calls On All Candidates To Do The Same

Last week, Senator Barack Obama became only the second presidential candidate to release a formal space policy (Senator Hillary Clinton released her policy during the autumn of 2007).

In this policy statement, Obama states that NASA "has embodied the adventurous spirit that lifted this nation to greatness and inspired people around the world." He believes that the United States "needs a strong space program to help maintain its superiority not only in space, but also here on earth in the realms of education, technology, and national security."
While this statement is absolutely correct, the Obama policy lacks most of the key elements necessary to enable NASA to become a true catalyst of education and innovation once again, as it was during the Apollo era.
Obama calls for development of the next generation of space vehicles, completion of the International Space Station, continuation of unmanned missions, monitoring the forces and effects of climate change, supporting scientific research, maintaining surveillance to strengthen national security, keeping weapons out of space, and strengthening math and science education.
In addition to there being no mention of returning to the Moon or going to Mars, this policy lays out NO vision for human space flight beyond the International Space Station (ISS). This extremely limited role for humans in space is only justified by its beneficial impact on international relations.
We are not going to inspire education or innovation by doing the same thing we have been doing for over thirty years - going around in circles in Low Earth Orbit. The reason that NASA was able to inspire students to study science and engineering in the 1960s was because NASA set an ambitious goal and devoted the resourses necessary to achieve that goal. If the next president of the United States commits to returning to the Moon and then sending humans to Mars at a far more accelerated time frame than is currently planned, we will capture the attention of the nation and create that inspirational catalyst of which Senator Obama speaks.
Obama also states that, "Robotic missions provide a level of endurance and cost-effectiveness that is unsurpassed." The Mars Society strongly supports ambitious robotic missions to Mars and other destinations in the Solar System (and beyond), but we fear that the Obama policy would favor robotic missions even when human explorers would be more effective. While rovers like Spirit and Opportunity have done a miraculous job, a small team of human explorers would be able to cover more territory and collect more scientific data in a day or two than both rovers have in several years. There is no question that robotic exploration is vital, but it needs to be integrated with a comprehensive and well-defined human exploration program.
In addition, while education and innovation are important byproducts of an ambitious space program, there are many other compelling reasons to explore space - not the least of which is exploration and discovery. By sending humans to the Moon and Mars, we will be reaching for potentially profound scientific discoveries; we will learn the potential for long-term settlement and resource utilization; and we will better understand our own environment.
If we don't pursue this type of destination oriented program, other nations certainly will. No matter how slowly nations like China, India, and Russia seem to be moving, it is almost certain that they will move ahead of us in space technology and exploration in the next decade if we fail to move forward. This would put us in a terrible disadvantage
The Mars Society applauds the Obama campaign for releasing a space policy, but as the election process continues, we hope that he will revise and expand this policy. It would be a true gift to the nation and humanity if the next President of the United States were to create a space program that can truly inspire and propel our nation forward.
The Mars Society calls on ALL candidates for the Presidency of the United States to make strong statements in support of an acceleration of NASA's Moon-Mars goals — not a slowdown. Space exploration should not be a partisan issue. We hope that all of the candidates realize the importance of the space program — to our nation as well as all of humanity. A strong space program can be one of the greatest assets to science and engineering education in the nation, and will help guarantee our technological leadership in the 21st century.
