Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Dr Vladimir Nekhorvich is dead.
So is Gradski,
but that happened earlier.
We had Nekhorvich on a flight
from Sydney
that crashed in the Rockies.
- Dead...
- Are you listening to me?

Mission: Impossible II (2000)

You crashed on the plane.
You're dead.
Tired, certainly,
but dead is a little extreme.
On the other hand,
when my colleague Gradski had
your pulse and your blood pressure
he had less than a day to live.
You are infected with Chimera,
my friend.
No use, my friend,
the medical staff
wants no part of this.
Doctors don't like dying
more than anybody else.
How could I possibly be infected?
That's exactly what Gradski said

Better than Prozac: Creating the Next Generation of Psychiatric Drugs

By Samuel H. Barondes

In 1982 Astra began selling zimelidine in Europe as an antidepressant with the trade name of Zelmid. Licensed by Merck for distribution in the United States, Zelmid might well have been on its way to becoming a breakthrough drug. But then disaster struck: several patients treated with Zelmid developed a form of paralysis called Guillain-Barre syndrome. Although the side effect is rare, it can persist after the drug is discontinued, and it is potentially fatal. As a result, Zelmid was withdrawn from the market.

Astra's cloud had a silver lining. Its beneficiary was Eli Lilly, an American pharmaceutical company based in Indiana. In the early 1970s it too had started making derivatives of an antihistamine, in this case diphenhydramine - the active ingredient in popular allergy pills such as Benadryl, as well as over-the-counter sleeping pills such as Sominex and TylenolPM. Explicitly interested in finding a new antidepressant, scientists at Lilly tested the effects of the new chemicals on reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. On July 24, 1972, David Wong, a Hong Kong-born pharmacologist, found that one of these chemicals, Lilly 110140, is a potent inhibitor of serotonin reuptake and a weak inhibitor of norepinephrine uptake. Named fluoxetine, this selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor would eventually become world-famous - as Prozac.

Mission: Impossible II

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mission: Impossible 2 was released in theatres worldwide on May 24, 2000.

Ethan Hunt is alerted by the IMF that someone has used his identity to assist bio-chemical expert Dr. Vladimir Nekhorvich to enter the United States, only to kill him in a subsequent plane crash. Nekhorvich, an old friend of Ethan, had forewarned the IMF of his arrival, planning to deliver to them a new bioweapon, Chimera, and its cure, Bellerophon. He was forced to develop these by Biocyte Pharmaceuticals. IMF determines that rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose is responsible. IMF assigns Ethan to recover the virus and its cure. It also insists that he recruits Nyah Nordoff-Hall, a professional thief presently operating in Seville, Spain. Later, Ethan finds out that she is Ambrose's ex-girlfriend.

After recruiting Nyah, Ethan assembles his team, computer expert Luther Stickell and pilot Billy Baird, in Sydney, Australia, where Biocyte laboratories are located and Ambrose is staying. As Ethan stakes out Biocyte, Nyah gets close to Ambrose and begins to learn about the Chimera virus. At a horse racing event, Ambrose meets with Biocyte's CEO, John C. McCloy. He shows McCloy a video of Chimera affecting one of Nekhorvich's colleagues. He then blackmails McCloy into cooperating with him. Nyah steals video footage and transfers it to Ethan. Ethan's team learn that Chimera has a 20-hour dormant period before it causes death by mass destruction of the victim's red blood cells. Bellerophon can only save the victim if used within that 20-hour window.

The IMF team kidnaps McCloy to force him to give up Bellerophon. However, they learn that the only samples of Bellerophon were taken by Nekhorvich, and are now in Ambrose's hands. Ambrose has the cure, but does not have the virus (which Nekhorvich injected himself with). As a result, Ambrose forced McCloy to exchange a sample of the virus for a sample of Bellerophon. The team break into Biocyte to destroy the virus. Ambrose, posing as Ethan, tricks Nyah into revealing his plan. Ambrose captures Nyah and raids Biocyte to secure the virus. Ethan is able to destroy all but one sample of the virus before Ambrose intervenes, and a firefight ensues. Ambrose orders Nyah to retrieve the last sample of Chimera. She injects herself with it, preventing Ambrose from simply killing her to get it. Ambrose takes Nyah away, and Ethan escapes from the laboratory.

Ambrose lets Nyah wander the streets of Sydney in a daze, intending to start a pandemic. He offers to sell Bellerophon to McCloy in exchange for stock options, to make him the majority shareholder. He predicts that the price of Biocyte's stock will skyrocket due to demand for Bellerophon after the Chimera outbreak.

Mission: Impossible II (2000)

My regular driver-where is he?
Gone home, sick. Touch of flu.
Is the building up and running?
That's not exactly it.
Sorry. This is
the Biocyte storage structure.
I'll have it in a minute.
- Take a look at this.
- Start from the inside.
All storage and production
of Chimera is done here -
in this lab on the 42nd floor.
Hunt's target will be the Chimera,
stored and manufactured
at Biocyte on the 42nd floor.
If you look at Hunt's
operational history-and I have -
he invariably favours
misdirection over confrontation.
He'll never break in from the bottom
where security is heaviest.
No garage entrances,
Iobby's protected by five guards
on rotating patrol.
Not going in from the ground.
Show the atrium.
The atrium-one of a kind.
Runs through the centre
of the building,
provides 24-hour natural light via
mirrors and daylight storage cells.
Ends in a glass floor which doubles
as part of the lab ceiling.
The atrium roof closes at sundown,
and if the louvers are up
for more than 40 seconds,
the civil emergency alarms are
tripped. Those even I can't stop.
Ethan, that's 40 seconds
to get you in and the cables out.
No, Hunt will prefer to enter Biocyte
somewhere from the top
where security is minimal.
He'll undoubtedly engage
in some aerobatic insanity

Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Well, Dimitri,
every search for a hero
must begin with something
that every hero requires...
a villain.
Therefore, in the search
for our hero, Bellerophon,
we created a monster...
I beg you, Dimitri,
come to Sydney and accompany me
to Atlanta. Immediately.
However we travel,
I must arrive at my destination
within 20 hours of departure.
We're two and a half hours
from Atlanta.
Right now, we have a great view
of the Rocky Mountains.
You stare at that watch as if
your life depended on it, Doctor.
