ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer, completed in 1945. There were other computers that had these features, but the ENIAC had all of them in one package. It was Turing-complete and able to solve "a large class of numerical problems" through reprogramming.
ENIAC was formally accepted by the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps in July 1946. It was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland in 1947, where it was in continuous operation until 1955.
ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert
ENIAC had 20 ten-digit signed accumulators, which used ten's complement representation and could perform 5,000 simple addition or subtraction operations between any of them and a source (e.g., another accumulator or a constant transmitter) per second. It was possible to connect several accumulators to run simultaneously, so the peak speed of operation was potentially much higher, due to parallel operation.

U.S. Attacks Iran Frigates, Oil Platforms, Sinks Boat : American Helicopter Is Missing

MANAMA, Bahrain — U.S. warships and aircraft destroyed two of Iran's Persian Gulf oil platforms today, sank a patrol boat and damaged two Iranian frigates that fired missiles at American planes.
Iranian naval forces responded with attacks on Arab oil facilities, U.S., British and Cypriot commercial vessels and on a press helicopter chartered by NBC.
It was the most intense direct U.S.-Iran conflict since President Reagan ordered last summer that Navy forces be strengthened in the gulf, where Iran and Iraq have been at war since September, 1980.
Later today Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said that a two-man U.S. attack helicopter was missing and "we are concerned."
Defense Department officials said naval forces were searching for the Cobra chopper, a Marine aircraft that had been stationed aboard the cruiser Wainwright.
Washington called destruction of the oil platforms a "measured response" to the explosion of a mine, allegedly planted by Iran, that blew a hole in an American frigate last week and wounded 10 sailors.
Reagan said today's operations were a warning to Iran that "we will protect our ships and, if they threaten us, they'll pay a price. We undertook this action to make sure the Iranians have no illusions about the cost of irresponsible behavior."
No casualties were reported among U.S. forces. Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency said there were deaths and injuries aboard the platforms but it did not say how many.
Gave Advance Warning
On Reagan's instructions, about 9 a.m. gulf time, two groups of Navy warships struck the Iranian oil platforms Sassan and Sirri, 100 miles apart in the southern Persian Gulf.
They gave the Iranians advance warning to evacuate the platforms, which have been used as speedboat bases for attacks on neutral shipping. Reagan ordered the attacks as retaliation for the mine that holed the frigate Samuel B. Roberts on Thursday.
Both platforms were destroyed and left ablaze, one by naval gunfire and the other by explosives that were placed on it, according to statements in Washington.
The Iranian news agency said U.S. warships hit the Sassan platform at 9 a.m. and, 23 minutes later, the Sirri platform off nearby Sirri Island.
IRNA said Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati wrote a letter of protest to U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar that said, in part: "Iran will never submit to the policy of violence and intimidation and will definitely respond to the cowardly U.S. attacks."
Gunboats on Rampage
After the U.S. attacks, Iranian gunboats went on a rampage in the southern gulf. They attacked oil facilities and commercial vessels at the Mubarak oil field off the Sharjah emirate and, hours later, a Cypriot freighter leaving the United Arab Emirates with a load of fertilizer.
Carlucci said a Navy helicopter was fired on during the raid on the platforms but was not hit. Iranians shot at a press helicopter carrying an NBC-TV crew and an Associated Press photographer but missed.
AP photographer Norbert Schiller said the "Iranians fired at least half a dozen .50-caliber rounds and small-arms fire" at the helicopter.
Two Iranian warplanes tried to harass a U.S. warship but the ship fired missiles and the aircraft fled, shipping sources reported.
They said an Iranian patrol boat fired at the Wainwright, one of the ships attacking Sassan and Sirri, but did not hit it.

Chandler opted to keep Wainwright’s bow pointed at Joshan to minimize radar cross section. The Iranian Harpoon’s seeker either failed to activate or was lured off by chaff, and the missile passed close aboard down Wainwright’s starboard side. Bagley also fired a Harpoon at Joshan, which missed. The U.S. ships then sank the crippled patrol boat with guns. The Joshan suffered 15 sailors killed; among the severely wounded was Captain Mallek with a severed leg. While the surface action was going on, two Iranian F-4 Phantom fighter-bombers were orbiting too close for comfort and Wainwright engaged them with two extended-range Standard missiles.

I remember it clearly. Standing there that day in classroom when I was Junior (11th grade) class-president. Feel certain that was Mrs. East's classroom. Not sure but think Joe McCarthy captured the image. Someone, Mrs. East, I think, had us posing in "oriental" theme hats and that photograph, I am certain, was published in the class yearbook and that must have been year 1983. WASHINGTON — Retiring Justice Thurgood Marshall, the only black ever to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and in recent years its leading liberal voice, said Friday that President Bush should not use race as "an excuse" for picking the wrong person to succeed him.
Showing characteristic feistiness, Marshall sat impatiently tapping his cane throughout a news conference at which he resolutely fended off questions about his views on the high court's direction or social trends.
Asked whether Bush has an obligation to replace him with a minority member, Marshall said: "I don't think (race) should be used as an excuse one way or the other . . . . I mean for picking the wrong Negro, and saying, 'I'm picking him because he is a Negro.' I am opposed to that."
He added: "There's no difference between a white snake and black snake. They'll both bite."
But at the same time, Marshall stopped short of saying that race should not be a factor in picking his replacement.
"Of course I didn't say that," he said.
Marshall, named to the court in 1967 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson, said that he, his wife and his doctor had been discussing the possibility of his retirement during the past six months. Marshall, who turns 83 next week, cited his "advancing age and medical condition" in announcing his resignation Thursday.
Pressed at Friday's news conference about his ailments, he said: "What's wrong with me? I'm old. I'm getting old and coming apart."
Asked whether he will write his memoirs, Marshall said the only plan he had for his retirement was to "sit on my rear end."
Asked to assess his legacy, he replied: "I don't know what legacy I left. It's up to the people." As to the epitaph he would like, he said: "He did what he could with what he had."

QUO VADES?
Our corespondent of Wednesday who headed his communication with Quo Vades and signed himself 1928 has said something that will doubtless benefit many students. But in his letter he was forced to an extreme position in his effort to dislodge the self-satisfied inertia that was the target of his missile.
The Princetonian feels that the first mistaken idea in the article lies in the supposition that a large per cent, of the Freshmen come to Princeton filled with the perfect dreams of young idealists. It is true that each yearling class has a minority of such men. But the very hypothesis, assumed by our correspondent, that Princeton is so organized and such a sordid business proposition would be an indication of the presence of a type of man that ultimately brings such a state into being. Great numbers of Freshmen start campaigns yearly that are intended solely for the purpose of achieving the fruits of a college tinged with a commercial atmosphere. That is why the individual is so often suppressed and is also why such things as friendship and ideals go by the board in the mad rush. That is why there are so many thriving politicians, and so many busy charm gatherers.
This is at once a fortunate and an unfortunate state. For the man who knows what he wants and is willing to sacrifice his all to attain that end, it is indeed fortunate. For his path to fortune is already prescribed. But for the individual who cannot find what he wants in this system, it is equally unfortunate. He is left with the necessity of altering his standards and personality or else remaining out of sympathy with his environment for four very formative years of his life. If the individual is too different or too set, the change to conformity is too much to ask and the real answer for him is to move to an environment that is more closely in keeping with his tastes.
In any event it is too much to say that two years are wasted before the realization dawns on the poor beguiled student. The main reason for Princeton's existence is the work that students may perform here. If the student realizes this first purpose of his education, he will enter upon his Junior year with a taste of work well done and a resultant taste for such study. The rest are all by-products, important as many of them are.
Our correspondent also naively asserts that men very high in Princeton life often make serious mistakes. That is too obvious to bear comment. No one should come to college expecting a Utopia. If college turns out to be Utopian, then it will do so largely through the student's own endeavor and in his own mind. The Freshman will find in college what he is looking for, provided he is capable of digesting what his appetite demands.
We feel that the letter will do a lot of good to the Campus as a whole.
