I make this note now because of how frustrating and agonizing is my sleeping time. Last time I was sleeping I was agonized by details in my sleeping dreams about a significant detail here. I was dreaming while asleep of the work I am doing now to construct this note. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis glided to a landing Friday after the first East-West linkup in orbit in 20 years, bringing home an American and two Russians who spent an often dreary 3 1/2 months aboard the Mir space station.
The shuttle, with commander Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson at the controls, touched down at 7:54 a.m. PDT at the Kennedy Space Center, from where it was launched June 27.
"Welcome home, Atlantis . . . congratulations on a perfect end to your historic mission. A new era in human spaceflight has begun," shuttle communicator Curt Brown radioed the crew from Mission Control in Houston.
"We couldn't have said it better. We're proud to have been a part of it," Gibson radioed back from the cockpit.
During the 10-day shuttle mission, Atlantis docked with Mir 245 miles above Earth in a feat of precision flying executed at 17,500 m.p.h. Atlantis delivered a fresh Russian crew to Mir and gave astronaut Norman E. Thagard and his two Russian crew mates a ride back home.
President Clinton called the astronauts and cosmonauts before they left Atlantis to congratulate them on their docking mission with the Russian space station. He offered special praise for Thagard, saying "we're all very proud."
"The Russians took good care of me," Thagard told the President. "We're great friends so I think if what we did on a personal level is any indication, there won't be any problem with this on an intergovernmental level as well."
Clinton replied: "The next time we have any problem between American and Russian officials I'm going to send them into space. I think I now know how to solve all international problems."

Dr. Ellen Baker drew blood from Thagard, a physician, and his two Russian crew mates and performed physical exams to help scientists understand the effects on the body of long stays in space. Thagard spent 3 1/2 months aboard the space station Mir, a U.S. space endurance record.
Mission Control, meanwhile, was puzzled by the higher than expected use of fuel by Atlantis.

I have been thinking a lot about that scene recently in "Battlestar Galactica." I imagine or remember that I did something similar as I was about to land on an aircraft carrier. It was a highly crazy maneuver but I had a reason. I am thinking that I had just shot down two Libyan fighters and I did it for that reason. I wasn't showing off but I had a suspicion that at least one person on the carrier was reporting my movements and the Libyans, possibly even Soviet fighters, were sent up specifically to shoot me down. I got both of them though and I wanted to do something to cause some chatter. That was one reason. Another is that I was hoping to de-motivate them from attacking me again by showing them just how capable a pilot I was. Everything I read suggests that landing on an aircraft carrier is stressful enough on a good day. So I wanted to do something stunning that would show I was good enough to make such a maneuver even after the intense stress of that combat engagement where they sent up their best to get me. My thoughts are that just as I about to land on the carrier, I pulled what I think is called a barrel-roll. That's not the same as Claire describes as the over-turn performed by Raz over Osirak. Rather, it is similar to that scene recently when "Starbuck" rolled over the top of "Apollo's" ship. I did that and still made a perfect 3-wire landing on the deck. The Captain flipped out over that and my thoughts are conflicted over whether I explained why I did it. I might not have told him because I trusted no one. They were going to pull my wings but somehow I told President Reagan about it, or I didn't have to tell him anything and he had it figured out too and he did his part to keep me flying. So that one objective was to de-motivate them with that stunt. But another objective was to generate chatter that we could use to track down the people reporting my movements to the enemy.

The psychiatrist at the VA hospital was still wanting me to take the drugs because he was wanting me to have blood drawn and I left his office and I said the heck with that and I skipped the blood test and the next week at our regularly scheduled meeting he told me something about how he knew I didn’t have my blood taken but he didn’t say that in so many words and I didn’t say anything and then he wanted me to have blood drawn again and again I left the building without getting another needle stuck in my arm and the next week when I went back to the VA hospital and was sitting in the waiting room for him to call my name and I saw him come out of his office and he called someone else’s name and I just got up and left the building and I never went back there again. I am trying to recall as I write if that was before or after they were deliberately torturing me to try to get me to admit that I am the secret federal agent they believe I am. That last appointment with the psychiatrist was in 2006. They were torturing me in the VA hospital in 2005.

When Bill Gates testified via videotape in Microsoft's antitrust trial in 1998, he was combative and defensive, as if he couldn't believe how stupid the entire procedure was.
He didn't expect the tape to be shown in court. It was, and it was a disaster. Public opinion turned -- instead of a billionaire genius who had built Microsoft into the most valuable tech company in the world, he was a condescending monopolist who didn't have time for the legal system.
Amazingly, Gates didn't see it coming.
