They put you into a machine and you have to wriggle your way out, centimeter by centimeter and it is beyond claustrophobic and they look for your worst fears and every day they have a new day to exploit your worst fears and this g--damned doesn't even come close - not even g--damned close - to describing how bad it is.

They don't torture you with primarily physical pain, such as beatings, etc. Physical torture is easy to resist. For a while at least. If you are good, you can resist it for a long time. Depends on how far they take it though. But the real bastards look to get in your head and really screw with you. And they have weeks and months and years to just screw with your head and screw with your head because they are lunatics and this doesn't come goddamned close to describing how bad it was.

I woke up this time thinking, partially visualizing, flying an F-14 Tomcat over the ocean somewhere. I can almost visualize another F-14 flying on my wing. Suddenly, the other F-14 exploded but I can't actually visualize that part. I think both people parachuted out of that aircraft. Apparently another missile hit my aircraft, blew off the canopy, and knocked me unconscious. Then I can almost see us traveling straight down towards the ocean surface and the RIO in the seat behind me was yelling at me to wake up. I pulled up and engaged the two aircraft that fired at us. One was hit by my Sparrow but the other Sparrow missed. I went in and finished off the other one up close. I returned to the carrier and landed safely, and then passed out from a moderate concussion with blood running out from underneath my cracked helmet.

How I managed to shoot down those two enemy fighters is beyond me. I imagine or remember that I left a wake on the ocean surface I came so close to it before I recovered control after the initial missile volley they sent at us. They got off another volley but none of those detonated around me.

It must have been something similar to when I saved those people from being run over by that speeding car a few years back. That must have been 2002. I was a volunteer at the Danskin triathlon. I puzzled over that for a long time. I just couldn't put my finger on something about that. My mind had been blank but yet I acted with such split-second decisiveness to keep them from getting splattered by that car.

I had a very clear dream about being out to sea but the progress of the events seem to be somewhat out of sequence. I have been thinking about it after waking up and I feel it is important to note that certain events happened out of sequence in the dream and I cannot now remember the sequence as I dreamed, although the sequence of events that are out of order might only span a matter of hours. One reason that seemed important after I woke up is that I was thinking I had been flying an F-14 Tomcat during that event, because that notion was strong in my mind during one dream sequence of events, but then I seemed to be dreaming that I had actually been in an A-6 Intruder.

Then I noticed a ship was approaching and I was waving my arms to get their attention but I think they had already spotted me and they were approaching me to extract me from the water and they were coming so close I thought they were going to run over me.
There is also something wrong with the proportions in that dream as well, in that the ship seemed a lot smaller than it should be, or something like that. I feel certain it was a Ticonderoga-class cruiser so that would mean, if that really was the class of U.S. Navy ship, that the dream occurred during the 1980's or later. I had no other sense of time and date to the dream.

I remember something about identifying the bow structure of the ship and that was how I knew it was a Ticonderoga but after waking up, I have been wondering why I cannot remember other identifying details about the Ticonderoga-class, such as that large, distinctive forward superstructure or whether it had a rail-launcher or the absence of the rail-launcher, indicating it was one of the later VLS versions.

After the ship pulled past me as I floated in the ocean, I saw a Seahawk helo lift off from the deck, seemingly from the bow, which is odd, and then it was approaching me and I was anticipating it is winch me up as it hovered over me. Another odd detail is that it actually seemed to land, although I cannot visualize it landing, impossibly, on the ocean surface, but I recall that detail because I noted that the tail rotors almost hit me.

Then I was in the ship and I seemed to be in CIC, judging by all the equipment and I was sitting in chair and I was still wearing wet clothes. I can visualize one person that was talking to me more than anyone else but I cannot visualize enough detail about him to describe.
It seems it was then in the dream that I started to dream, or to think, about the events that led to me being in the ocean. I still feel a certain amount of confusion as to whether I dreamed it all in sequence as it occurred, in that this all is probably a true experience I was dreaming about, or whether I dreamed it in the sequence as I am not writing.

As some point in the dream, and that seems to be associated to other events in this dream sequence, I was flying in the B/N seat of an A-6 Intruder and something happened, that I never did seem to know about in the dream, and I was going to have to eject, along with the pilot. At some point since waking up, I am aware that the pilot did not survive and I recall that I never did see him again in the dream. So I don't know what happened and why we had to eject but certain details seem unrealistic, even though I can still visualize sitting there in that B/N seat. One detail is that I was not wearing any kind of harness or belt and after what ever event it was that made us eject, I pulled across an automobile seatbelt and I can still visualize clipping it in.

I think that was just before I noted that I seemed to be sitting in some kind of high-back desk chair and that I pulled the lever that caused the seat back to un-recline, or whatever is the proper word, and the seat back was actually causing me to lean forward.
Then when I, or we, as I can only recally myself ejecting, and similar to scenes in "Top Gun" and "Flight of the Intruder," but with different results, I was blasted through the plexiglass canopy and it shattered as I was blasted through it. I did not seem to suffer any injuries from going through the canopy and I ponder every time over that scene in "Flight of the Intruder.
I think that was the extent of my dream. I think then the dream picks up with me floating in the ocean for at least 2 days and a USN ship rescuing me.

Fire-Chief Finalists Are Named -- Three Described As Progressive

To those who know them, the three finalists to replace Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris are progressive and innovative.
They come with impressive credentials reflecting decades of service as firefighters and administrators. They beat out several candidates from the Seattle Fire Department.
The finalists are Aurora, Colo., Fire Chief Raymond Barnes; California Fire Marshal Ronny Coleman; and Ventura County, Calif., Fire Chief James Sewell.
The three were selected by a citizens committee appointed by Mayor Norm Rice, who announced their names late yesterday.

Residents soon will see increased activity at the old Central Library as preparation begins for the demolition of the 41-year-old building.
A new library is planned for the existing site at 1000 Fourth Ave.

"Descent" is a two-part episode from the sixth/seventh season of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.
On the holodeck, Lt. Commander Data plays a game of poker with holographic representations of Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking (being played by himself). Answering a question from Sir Isaac, Data explains that the game is an experiment for understanding "how three of history's greatest minds would interact" in such a setting. Just as Hawking has won another hand, a red alert is issued and Data suspends the program.
The Enterprise responds to a distress call from a Starfleet outpost. On arrival, they send down an away team consisting of Riker, Worf, Data and another security guard. They find the entire crew of the outpost dead. Suddenly they are attacked by a group of Borg. During the course of the fire fight, Riker observes that the Borg are not acting like the Borg they have encountered previously. For starters, each of them is armed with energy weapons and refer to each other as individuals. In fact, these Borg appear to be fighting more like guerrilla warriors. While fighting a drone, Data feels an emotion: anger, resulting in him breaking the neck of the drone he was fighting.
Note: In the Star Trek Voyager episode Scorpion, Seven of Nine pulls up a schematic of a Borg weapon, a multikinetic neutronic mine with a five million isoton yield which she offers to adapt with Voyagers nanobots to fight Species 8472, the design on the schematic being the Borg ship in this episode leading to the speculation that the Borg Ship was a modified Borg mine.
In orbit, an unidentified ship fires on the Enterprise, causing the crew to return fire. The alien ship beams up the remaining Borg from the outpost and flees with the Enterprise in pursuit. Suddenly the ship enters some kind of vortex and disappears without a trace. Back on the outpost, Riker asks Data what happened, but Data can't explain it; he just felt angry.
Admiral Alynna Nechayev arrives to take command of the situation. She reprimands Picard for not destroying the Borg when he had the chance (I, Borg) and orders him to do so if another opportunity should present itself.

While on work duty at a local airfield, Sideshow Bob escapes from prison and breaks into a hangar. There, he gains control of the airwaves and demands that all television stations immediately go off the air permanently ... or else he'll detonate an atomic bomb. When the authorities are unable to find Bob, they decide to err on the side of safety and give into his demands. However, Krusty the Clown uses an emergency transmitter to begin broadcasting from a civil defense shed. Bob is angered and detonates the bomb, which turns out to be a dud. With both moves having failed, Bob kidnaps Bart and steals a Wright Brothers-era plane to crash into the civil defense shed where Krusty is holed up inside. However, the antique plane is mechanically unable to carry out its intended suicide mission, and once the plane stalls, Bob is easily arrested.

Operation Crossroads was a series of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946. Its purpose was to test the effect of nuclear weapons on naval ships. The series consisted of two detonations, each with a yield of 23 kilotons: Able was detonated at an altitude of 520 feet (158 m) on 1 July 1946; Baker was detonated 90 feet (27 m) underwater on 25 July 1946. Those involved in recreational boating should always remember that the primary responsibility for safety rests with the individual. And while a cruise can be a wonderful experience for one person or an entire family, it can also result in tragedy.
Aware of the need for boating safety, the Congress enacted the joint resolution of June 4, 1958 (36 U.S.C. 161) as amended, requesting that the President proclaim a National Safe Boating Week.
Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning on June 7, 1981 as National Safe Boating Week.

REDMOND - Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Mike Brown is retiring at the end of the year and will be replaced by Treasurer Greg Maffei.
Brown, 51, who joined Microsoft in 1989 as treasurer, recently was named chairman of the Nasdaq stock market.
Maffei, 37, joined Microsoft in 1993 and has been rising steadily through the organization. He was named treasurer in 1994 and was promoted last year to vice president, taking on expanded duties, including corporate development.

Reagan took a screen test in 1937 that led to a seven-year contract with Warner Brothers studios. His first screen credit was the starring role in the 1937 movie Love Is on the Air, and by the end of 1939 he had already appeared in 19 films.
Military service
After completing fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve on April 29, 1937, as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.
Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Due to his nearsightedness, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the approval of the Army Air Force (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California. He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.
By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF.

American Airlines Flight 11 was a scheduled U.S. domestic passenger flight from Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles International Airport. It was hijacked by five Islamic terrorists and deliberately crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City as part of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Fifteen minutes into the flight, the hijackers injured at least three people, forcefully breached the cockpit, and overpowered the pilot and first officer. Mohamed Atta, who was a known member of al-Qaeda, and trained as a pilot, took over the controls. Air traffic controllers noticed the flight was in distress when the crew stopped responding to them. They realized the flight had been hijacked when Atta mistakenly transmitted announcements to air traffic control. On board, two flight attendants contacted American Airlines, and provided information about the hijackers and injuries to passengers and crew.
The aircraft crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 08:46 local time; the impact killed all 92 people aboard, including the hijackers. Many people in the streets witnessed the collision, and Jules Naudet captured the impact on video.

Preparation for demolition of Seattle's Central Library begins
Residents soon will see increased activity at the old Central Library as preparation begins for the demolition of the 41-year-old building.
A new library is planned for the existing site at 1000 Fourth Ave.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 13, the remaining landscaping around the Central Library will be removed. "Residents will to be happy to know that nearly all the plants and trees have homes or will be recycled," said City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs.

On a night off, Apollo takes Starbuck, Cassiopeia, and Sheba to one of the least-explored areas of the Galactica - the last of the ancient battlestar's astro-navigational domes, an area Apollo has been repairing in his spare time as relaxation and as an outlet for his passion for deep-star exploration. The dome's scanner is set for long-range communication, and to their surprise they receive a signal, an image of an ancient spacecraft similar to what the Colonies once flew. After showing the signal to Boomer and Commander Adama, they are sent on a long-range Viper patrol to a distant solar system on the transmission's line - and to their horror they discover a Cylon base star orbiting one of the system's planets in its search for the Colonial Fleet. They escape to the Galactica undetected, and Adama considers avoiding the system, but then decides that he's tired of running and begins preparation to attack the base star. Apollo recommends infiltrating the
base star to cripple its centralized command chamber before the Galactica attacks, and to their surprise Adama is able to secure information from Baltar, who is allowed to barter knowledge of the Cylons in exchange for freedom, Adama willing to risk that Baltar will also see eventual rescue by the Cylons. The Galactica thus begins its most important mission yet as battle is joined between the ancient battlestar and her Viper fleet against the stronger Cylon raider phalanx of the base star.

Preparation for demolition of Seattle's Central Library begins
Residents soon will see increased activity at the old Central Library as preparation begins for the demolition of the 41-year-old building.
A new library is planned for the existing site at 1000 Fourth Ave.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 13, the remaining landscaping around the Central Library will be removed. "Residents will to be happy to know that nearly all the plants and trees have homes or will be recycled," said City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs.

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Into Cyberspace With Ansel -- Gates Purchases The Digital Rights To Famed Adams Photos

Not sated by its collections of Renoir, Cezanne and one of the largest photo archives in the world, Bill Gates' digital-arts company has added another prized set of images to its growing electronic vault: the life's work of arguably the best-known photographer in the world, Ansel Adams.
Bellevue-based Corbis Corp. announced today it has negotiated exclusive digital rights to the Adams collection, which is handled by a trust based in California, where the famed photographer and environmentalist lived before his death in 1984. That means that even though Adams' moody black-and-white photos of Yosemite National Park and other nature scenes are already featured in millions of calendars, books and posters, the Gates company will make money in the future off any computerized reproductions of the works.
Corbis officials said they obtained rights for up to 20 years and paid little or no money up front, suggesting the deal was based on a plan to share future revenue.
Adams' photos, such as his famous shot of Yosemite's Half Dome, could star on a computer screen near you as early as next year. That's when Corbis, which Gates formed in 1989 to collect digital-art rights, plans to release a CD-ROM title detailing Adams' life and featuring his works.
The CD-ROM will likely sell for about $50. But the company's real revenue will come from licensing the images to electronic publishers, who will use them in CD-ROMs, online
magazines and online programs akin to television's Discovery Channel documentaries. Corbis also makes money selling licenses to print publications that produce their pages electronically, a method used more and more by magazines and newspapers.

Moonrise On CD-Rom
`MOONRISE, Hernandez, New Mexico" has the mystical qualities people yearn for in nature, as well as the mystical qualities of its master photographer, Ansel Adams. The photo is evocative as light itself, and may turn out to be equally evocative as a digitalized memory in an electronic archive.
In the art community there are two camps gathered under the radiant glow of "Moonrise" on a computer screen. One worries that in the future when art can be dialed up as swiftly as a home-shopping channel, the diminution of art as a public, community experience will be complete. The other camp of archivists and artists believes greater public access to art will only make the images stronger, more permanent in our common memories.
The work of the lifetime of Ansel Adams soon will be found in the catalog of Corbis, the Bellevue electronic archive firm founded by Microsoft's Bill Gates. Among its achievements, Corbis is credited with beautifully displaying a Philadelphia collection of Impressionists, including an amazing digital walk through the gallery. Corbis is one of those intriguing Northwest companies that is etching the region into the early history of the micro-world.
Ahead of Corbis, Adams was also a wizard of his age. He was considered the best technical printer of photographs in the century. He welcomed the age of electronic publishing and predicted its rise. But like "Moonrise" itself, his images are of rock without antenna towers and glens without coaxial cables. It's the simplicity of Adams' photographs, not the wizardry of the age, that causes the yearning, the hollow need for rock, earth and moonrise.
