Reichert says Rahr should be successor

If the Metropolitan King County Council approves Sheriff Dave Reichert's recommended successor, Field Operations Chief Sue Rahr, she will be the first woman to be appointed sheriff in the organization's 152-year history.
Reichert, a Republican who defeated radio talk-show host Dave Ross for the District 8 Congressional seat last week, plans to step down as sheriff on Dec. 31.
He said in a statement released yesterday that Rahr, a 25-year veteran on the force, was "the logical choice" to head the 1,000-employee law-enforcement agency with a $110 million budget.

Sheriff's deputy shot and killed

A 46-year-old King County sheriff's deputy and community activist died today after he was shot while investigating a shooting in White Center.
Deputy Steve Cox, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was shot in the head during an interview with a suspect and died at Harborview Medical Center around 6 a.m.
Cox was a longtime White Center resident, a former deputy prosecuting attorney, the president of a local community group and the married father of a baby boy.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m., when officers responded to a call reporting gunfire near the intersection of S.W. 106th and 12th Ave S.W. They found the driver of a pick-up beaten and suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
As part of their investigation, five deputies questioned more than a dozen people at a party at a nearby residence. Cox began interviewing people one by one in the bedroom. Other deputies heard shots from that direction, and headed toward the bedroom, only to be met with a fusillade of gunfire.
At least one of the deputies returned fire. In the bedroom, they found the suspect dead from their gunshots. Cox had been shot in the head by the suspect. He was taken to Harborview and later died.
For the past 3 1/2 years, Cox was assigned to the Sheriff's Office White Center Storefront, patrolling the neighborhood where he lived. He was a committed community activist, the president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.
Before his career with the Sheriff's office, Cox served as a deputy prosecuting attorney in King, Franklin and Adams counties.

Slain deputy had become White Center's "Superman"

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.
But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.
To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.
Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.
Local bartender Cheryl Moss said Cox did more than anyone else to clean up drug dealing and prostitution: "He was our Superman. And now our Superman's dead."

The woman with the yellow umbrella, as I wrote of yesterday, reminds me of behavior I have noticed before among the zombies. I notice they have a person up close to me at one point in my travels to, I presume, identify me and then that person or another person close by, will walk along or near to me so that another person farther along my route will know I am the person he or she is looking for, for some nefarious reason. Sometimes they use transients to shadow me so that adds a certain level of randomness to their hostility.
I am quite certain that a woman was trying to get her to provoke a conflict with me recently, for example of the low-level aggressiveness that I see around me on a regular basis that I recognize as a result of my official United States federal undercover assignment.

USS TARAWA, At Sea (NNS) -- Navy Counter Intelligence Service (NCIS) conducted a counterintelligence and espionage lecture on board amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa (LHA 1) Nov. 19.
"NCIS provides counter intelligence and espionage awareness to all Navy and Marine Corps members," said Chris Follis, NCIS special agent float. "The training gives a brief overview of what NCIS does and then goes into case studies explaining what counter intelligence and espionage are."

Sheriff's deputy shot and killed

A 46-year-old King County sheriff's deputy and community activist died today after he was shot while investigating a shooting in White Center.
Deputy Steve Cox, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was shot in the head during an interview with a suspect and died at Harborview Medical Center around 6 a.m.
Cox was a longtime White Center resident, a former deputy prosecuting attorney, the president of a local community group and the married father of a baby boy.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m., when officers responded to a call reporting gunfire near the intersection of S.W. 106th and 12th Ave S.W. They found the driver of a pick-up beaten and suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
As part of their investigation, five deputies questioned more than a dozen people at a party at a nearby residence. Cox began interviewing people one by one in the bedroom. Other deputies heard shots from that direction, and headed toward the bedroom, only to be met with a fusillade of gunfire.
At least one of the deputies returned fire. In the bedroom, they found the suspect dead from their gunshots. Cox had been shot in the head by the suspect. He was taken to Harborview and later died.
For the past 3 1/2 years, Cox was assigned to the Sheriff's Office White Center Storefront, patrolling the neighborhood where he lived. He was a committed community activist, the president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.
Before his career with the Sheriff's office, Cox served as a deputy prosecuting attorney in King, Franklin and Adams counties.

Slain deputy had become White Center's "Superman"

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.
But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.
To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.
Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.
Local bartender Cheryl Moss said Cox did more than anyone else to clean up drug dealing and prostitution: "He was our Superman. And now our Superman's dead."

Reichert says Rahr should be successor

If the Metropolitan King County Council approves Sheriff Dave Reichert's recommended successor, Field Operations Chief Sue Rahr, she will be the first woman to be appointed sheriff in the organization's 152-year history.
Reichert, a Republican who defeated radio talk-show host Dave Ross for the District 8 Congressional seat last week, plans to step down as sheriff on Dec. 31.
He said in a statement released yesterday that Rahr, a 25-year veteran on the force, was "the logical choice" to head the 1,000-employee law-enforcement agency with a $110 million budget.

Into Cyberspace With Ansel -- Gates Purchases The Digital Rights To Famed Adams Photos

Not sated by its collections of Renoir, Cezanne and one of the largest photo archives in the world, Bill Gates' digital-arts company has added another prized set of images to its growing electronic vault: the life's work of arguably the best-known photographer in the world, Ansel Adams.
Bellevue-based Corbis Corp. announced today it has negotiated exclusive digital rights to the Adams collection, which is handled by a trust based in California, where the famed photographer and environmentalist lived before his death in 1984. That means that even though Adams' moody black-and-white photos of Yosemite National Park and other nature scenes are already featured in millions of calendars, books and posters, the Gates company will make money in the future off any computerized reproductions of the works.
Corbis officials said they obtained rights for up to 20 years and paid little or no money up front, suggesting the deal was based on a plan to share future revenue.
Adams' photos, such as his famous shot of Yosemite's Half Dome, could star on a computer screen near you as early as next year. That's when Corbis, which Gates formed in 1989 to collect digital-art rights, plans to release a CD-ROM title detailing Adams' life and featuring his works.
The CD-ROM will likely sell for about $50. But the company's real revenue will come from licensing the images to electronic publishers, who will use them in CD-ROMs, online
magazines and online programs akin to television's Discovery Channel documentaries. Corbis also makes money selling licenses to print publications that produce their pages electronically, a method used more and more by magazines and newspapers.

Moonrise On CD-Rom
`MOONRISE, Hernandez, New Mexico" has the mystical qualities people yearn for in nature, as well as the mystical qualities of its master photographer, Ansel Adams. The photo is evocative as light itself, and may turn out to be equally evocative as a digitalized memory in an electronic archive.
In the art community there are two camps gathered under the radiant glow of "Moonrise" on a computer screen. One worries that in the future when art can be dialed up as swiftly as a home-shopping channel, the diminution of art as a public, community experience will be complete. The other camp of archivists and artists believes greater public access to art will only make the images stronger, more permanent in our common memories.
The work of the lifetime of Ansel Adams soon will be found in the catalog of Corbis, the Bellevue electronic archive firm founded by Microsoft's Bill Gates. Among its achievements, Corbis is credited with beautifully displaying a Philadelphia collection of Impressionists, including an amazing digital walk through the gallery. Corbis is one of those intriguing Northwest companies that is etching the region into the early history of the micro-world.
Ahead of Corbis, Adams was also a wizard of his age. He was considered the best technical printer of photographs in the century. He welcomed the age of electronic publishing and predicted its rise. But like "Moonrise" itself, his images are of rock without antenna towers and glens without coaxial cables. It's the simplicity of Adams' photographs, not the wizardry of the age, that causes the yearning, the hollow need for rock, earth and moonrise.

Gates Foundation selects site near Seattle Center for new headquarters

The Experience Music Project, estimated to cost between $50 million and $60 million, will be built on a triangular piece of property at Broad Street and Denny Way, in the shadow of the Space Needle where the opera, symphony and ballet have traditionally drawn classical music fans to the Seattle Center.

Comet
A comet is a small Solar System body that orbits the Sun and, when close enough to the Sun, exhibits a visible coma (atmosphere) or a tail — both primarily from the effects of solar radiation upon the comet's nucleus. Comet nuclei are themselves loose collections of ice, dust and small rocky particles, measuring a few kilometres or tens of kilometres across.
Comets have a variety of different orbital periods, ranging from a few years, to hundreds of thousands of years, while some are believed to pass through the inner Solar System only once before being thrown out into interstellar space. Short-period comets are thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt, or associated scattered disc, which lie beyond the orbit of Neptune. Comets are distinguished from asteroids by the presence of a coma or tail, though very old comets that have lost all their volatile materials may come to resemble asteroids. Asteroids are also believed to have a different origin from comets, having formed in the inner Solar System rather than the outer Solar System. Recent findings have, however, somewhat blurred the distinction between asteroids and comets
Orbital characteristics
Short-period comets are generally defined as having orbital periods of less than 200 years. They usually orbit more-or-less in the ecliptic plane in the same direction as the planets. Their orbits typically take them out to the region of the outer planets (Jupiter and beyond) at aphelion; for example, Comet Halley's aphelion is a little way beyond the orbit of Neptune. At the shorter extreme, Comet Encke has an orbit which never places it farther from the Sun than Jupiter. Short-period comets are further divided into the Jupiter family (periods less than 20 years) and Halley family (periods between 20 and 200 years).

This was a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed though when I first saw them that they were preparing to leave. I think this is the one at the link below. I love these ships. Who needs a parade when you can watch a U.S. Navy warship getting underway? If I could choose any ship I wanted for a personal yacht, it would be a Burke-class destroyer.

Charles Bowers Momsen (21 June 1896 - 25 May 1967), also known as Swede Momsen, was born in Flushing, New York. He was an American pioneer in submarine rescue and invented the underwater escape device called the Momsen Lung, for which he received the Distinguished Service Medal in 1929. In May 1939, he directed the rescue of the crew of the Squalus (SS-192).
While serving with the Submarine Safety Test Unit, Momsen began working on a device to help such sailors surface. Officially called the Submarine Escape Lung, it consisted of an oblong rubber bag that recycled exhaled air. The press enthusiastically received the device and dubbed it the Momsen Lung, a name that stuck.
The Lung contained a canister of soda lime, which removed poisonous carbon dioxide from exhaled air and then replenished the air with oxygen. Two tubes led from the bag to a mouthpiece: one to inhale oxygen and the other to exhale carbon dioxide. The device hung around the neck and strapped around the waist. Besides providing oxygen for the ascent, it also allowed a submariner to rise slowly to the surface, thus avoiding decompression sickness ("the bends").
Between June 1929 and September 1932, then-Lt. Momsen developed the lung with Chief Gunner's Mate Clarence L. Tibbals and Frank M. Hobson, a civilian employee of the Bureau of Ships. In 1929, Momsen received the Distinguished Service Medal for personally testing the device at a depth of 200 feet (61 m).
The Lung saved its first lives in October 1944, when eight submariners used it to reach the surface after Tang (SS-306) sank in 180 feet (55 m) of water in the East China Sea.

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.
This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV. My hope is that this situation will end soon and then some third person will make arrangements where we can meet and I can determine if this was all my imagination.
Even if Lily is as nice in person as she seems to be on TV, I'm beginning to think I shouldn't pursue it. I've been feeling confident this thing could actually be real, but that is actually a real problem. So many people are watching what I do in private so they can try to mimic my success. If I talk to a pretty woman on TV while sitting in my living room and then end up spending the foreseeable future finding ways to make her smile in a real relationship, then there are going to be other people out there trying the same thing. And after that Tacoma Mall terrorist, I just think this is all a bad idea. As some jerk standing next to me the other day pointed out conspicuously secretive: It sucks to be me. And then there are all these people with the "priceless," "volume down," etc. bullshit.....when does it end? How are they finding out this stuff? Why can't they just all go away and if anybody has to monitor everything I do and write, why can't they just
give that job to Lily? That would be pretty fun.

[I don't know yet if my dream controls have been working as they try to manipulate me. The movie's screenplay was adapted by Michael Blake from his novel of the same title. It was Kevin Costner who, in early 1986 (when he was relatively unknown), encouraged Blake to turn an idea for a story into a novel. Dances with Wolves was rejected by numerous publishers but finally published in paperback in 1988.
I am wondering if they put details in these movies that deflect me from identiying too much with the characters. IF so and if these movies really are relevant to me, that means this "lost" period I am experiencing has been planned for a long time. The idea is that I wouldn't identify with Dunbar because he was trying to commit suicide instead of having his leg amputated. I suspect I have gone on operations that may be viewed by other people as suicidal, such as bringing Microsoft to justice, but there is fine difference between taking on a seemingly impossible task versus committing suicide. Some other approaches would be in Flight Of The Intruder with it being set in Vietnam. The primary reason for that setting is that Vietnam was the most modern period of large-scale open warfare. After I starting thinking about that, I have been remembering things this guy at work named Joshua was saying to me. I think he was working on my side. Anyway, I forget some
of the other thoughts I have been having on this topic.
