Giuliani, Barack Obama, Eliot Spitzer, and John Edwards of North Carolina, among others not named here, are actively providing cover for those past and pending acts of domestic terrorism.

Fire-Chief Finalists Are Named -- Three Described As Progressive

To those who know them, the three finalists to replace Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris are progressive and innovative.

They come with impressive credentials reflecting decades of service as firefighters and administrators. They beat out several candidates from the Seattle Fire Department.

The finalists are Aurora, Colo., Fire Chief Raymond Barnes; California Fire Marshal Ronny Coleman; and Ventura County, Calif., Fire Chief James Sewell.

The three were selected by a citizens committee appointed by Mayor Norm Rice, who announced their names late yesterday.

Fire-Chief Finalists Are Named -- Three Described As Progressive

To those who know them, the three finalists to replace Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris are progressive and innovative.

They come with impressive credentials reflecting decades of service as firefighters and administrators. They beat out several candidates from the Seattle Fire Department.

The finalists are Aurora, Colo., Fire Chief Raymond Barnes; California Fire Marshal Ronny Coleman; and Ventura County, Calif., Fire Chief James Sewell.

The three were selected by a citizens committee appointed by Mayor Norm Rice, who announced their names late yesterday.

Fire chief retiring to join ministry; tenure was rocky

In an interview, Sewell said he has held strong Christian beliefs since he was a teen and that his marriage and life have been built on his faith.

"Lightning didn't strike me a couple of months ago," he said.

Sewell said that he first began considering the ministry three or four years ago and that he became serious about it a year ago.

Starbuck's unplanned double-date with Cassiopeia and Athena on the recently-reopened luxury liner Rising Star is interrupted when the Galactica picks up long-range transmission traffic indicting human life in a distant solar system on the other side of a vast asteroid dust field. Starbuck is recalled to duty to pilot the Starchaser, an up-powered reconnaissance viper denuded of weaponry and bearing a voice-activated computer - Computer, Oral Response Activated, known simply as CORA - that can handle the vast increase in performance in the new viper. Starbuck is enthralled by the new viper, but less enthusiastic about CORA, who bears a personality that grates on Starbucks nerves. Starbuck picks up two star-craft from hundreds of years vintage and in the process he is double-crossed and knocked unconscious by a smuggler of liquor. Starbuck later finds himself incarcerated on Proteus, a prison planetoid that is a surviving body from hundreds of such penal
facilities scattered through the stars by the Colonies during the Cylon War, facilities that made munitions and liquor for the war effort. Proteus is now manned by the distant antecedents of its original guards and prisoners and continues to make ambrosia for Colonial warriors, even though hundreds of years worth of ambrosia have never left the planet - and the planet may not even survive, as a Cylon patrol that has detected Starbuck's now-stolen viper has spotted the planetoid while the stolen viper is being pursued by Apollo and Boomer.

One man who sat where you do now and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1968 is another member of our administration-Assistant Secretary of Defense James Webb, the most decorated member of his class. James' gallantry as a marine officer in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations, including two Purple Hearts. James wrote several books about American service men and women. In his book, "A Sense of Honor," he describes the life that you have chosen. He wrote:

"Servicemen are always in motion, in the air at more than the speed of sound, underwater at depths whales could only dream of, on the surface of the water cruising at 30 miles an hour through crashing seas with another ship almost touching theirs . . . replenishing their oil supplies. Or they are on the ground, in the dirt, testing and training weapons that may someday kill others but today may deal them that same irony. The smallest margin of error separates a live man from a dead man. And in war, of course, they are the first and usually the only ones to pay. Congresswoman Holt, Secretary Lehman, Admiral Watkins, General Davis, Admiral Larson, distinguished guests, members of the class of 1985, ladies and gentlemen: I am so proud and honored to be here and to have a 22-gun salute. [Laughter]

But it's an honor for any President to commemorate the graduation of new officers from our service academies, but today is a special privilege for me. I was reminded on the way up here that we have a lot in common. You were the first class to enter the Naval Academy during my term in office, and you might say we've finished a 4-year course together. Now we're both about ready for the real stuff. [Laughter] One thing bothers me, though. I still seem to be climbing that greased monument and you only had to do it once, 3 years ago. 1 [Laughter]

Well, looking out over your faces in this inspiring and historic setting gives reason for confidence in our nation's future. These last 4 years have been spent preparing you to assume responsibility for the protection of our country and all that we stand for. You're part of a noble tradition.

America's independence and freedom, since we were but 13 Colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast, have relied on the bravery, the good sense, and leadership of her officer corps. We've leaned heavily on men of the sea, on our Navy and Marine Corps. Your careers will be no less significant to future generations of Americans than those of past naval heroes.

You will hear during your career, as I've heard during times in my life, that maintaining the military at peak readiness-keeping our forces trained and supplied with the best weapons and equipment—is too costly. Well, I say it is too costly for America not to be prepared. As Presidents since Washington have noted: The way to prevent war is to be prepared for it.

And as obvious as that is, it's not always appreciated. There's a story about John Paul Jones' chief gunners mate. It was during the gore and thunder of that most historic battle. He was loading and firing cannon and carrying the wounded to the medical officer, cutting away the tangled rigging. And apparently in the midst of that first fight, John Paul Jones went below momentarily and changed into a new uniform. And as he emerged on deck a voice rang out through the smoke and fire—it was the British captain asking, "Have you struck your colors?" And the gunners mate, sweat and blood dripping from his body, turned and saw Jones now in his fresh uniform reply: "I have not yet begun to fight." And the gunners mate said, "There's always somebody who didn't get the word."

Fire chief retiring to join ministry; tenure was rocky

In an interview, Sewell said he has held strong Christian beliefs since he was a teen and that his marriage and life have been built on his faith.

"Lightning didn't strike me a couple of months ago," he said.

Sewell said that he first began considering the ministry three or four years ago and that he became serious about it a year ago.

There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.

Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.

Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.

For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Capricorn One is a 1978 thriller movie about a Mars landing hoax.

The setting is the late 1970s, and the first manned mission to Mars is on the pad ready to launch. NASA authorities (Holbrook) realize that a faulty life support system has doomed any chance of a successful flight, so for political and financial purposes they decide to fake the landing rather than scrub the mission.

Minutes before launch, the bewildered crew (Brolin, Waterston, and Simpson) are removed from the capsule and flown to an old abandoned United States Army Air Corps base deep within the desert. The Bombing of Dresden by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Force (USAAF) between 13 February and 15 February 1945, 12 weeks before the surrender of the Armed Forces (Wehrmacht) of Nazi Germany, remains one of the most controversial Allied actions of the Second World War. The raids saw 1,300 heavy bombers drop over 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices in four raids, destroying 13 square miles (34 km2) of the city, the baroque capital of the German state of Saxony, and causing a firestorm that consumed the city centre. Estimates of civilian casualties vary greatly, but recent publications place the figure between 24,000 and 40,000.

A 1953 United States Air Force report written by Joseph W. Angell defended the operation as the justified bombing of a military and industrial target, which was a major rail transportation and communication centre, housing 110 factories and 50,000 workers in support of the German war effort. Against this, several researchers have argued that not all of the communications infrastructure, such as the bridges, were in fact targeted, nor were the extensive industrial areas outside the city centre. It has been argued that Dresden was a cultural landmark of little or no military significance, a "Florence on the Elbe," as it was known, and the attacks were indiscriminate area bombing and not proportional for the commensurate military gains.

The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned from Sunday October 8 to early Tuesday October 10, 1871, killing hundreds and destroying about four square miles in Chicago, Illinois. Though the fire was one of the largest U.S. disasters of the 19th century, the rebuilding that began almost immediately spurred Chicago's development into one of the most populous and economically important American cities.

Eyewitnesses reported sighting spontaneous ignitions, lack of smoke, "balls of fire" falling from the sky, and blue flames. Objectives:

Significant locomotor and postural equilibrium disturbances frequently occur following space flight and have been reported by both the U.S. and Russian space programs. The general overriding objective of this investigation was to understand the underlying sensorimotor adaptive alterations that contribute to these postflight locomotor disturbances. Previous investigations typically assessed how specific sensorimotor subsystems, such as vestibulo-ocular and otolith-spinal reflexes, function during the process of adaptation to weightlessness and readaptation to 1-G. However, little documentation exists of changes in the strategies used for coordination among these subsystems.

This experiment was designed to determine if extended exposure to the microgravity environment encountered during long-duration space flight adaptively modified eye and head control mechanisms required to maintain gaze stability during terrestrial locomotion; and determine if head-trunk coordination strategies that occur during terrestrial locomotion were modified following extended duration space flight and to determine if these changes were associated with disturbances in lower limb kinematics and muscle activity patterns of the leg during locomotion.

while constantly nursing them, he risked infection from contagious diseases while in a rapidly deteriorating state of health. This unselfish and exemplary conduct, coupled with his refusal to stray even the slightest from the Code of Conduct, earned him the deepest respect from not only his fellow prisoners, but his captors as well. Rather than negotiate for his own release or better treatment, he steadfastly frustrated attempts by the Viet Cong to break his indomitable spirit. and passed this same resolve on to the men whose well-being he so closely associated himself. Knowing his refusals would prevent his release prior to the end of the war, and also knowing his chances for prolonged survival would be small in the event of continued refusal, he chose nevertheless to adhere to a Code of Conduct far above that which could be expected. His personal valor and exceptional spirit of loyalty in the face of almost certain death reflected the highest credit
upon Colonel Cook, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service.
