There has got to be a cheap and safe way to cheat gravity. Sometimes I think I know how to do it, but I just can't remember.

First time absolutely I knew even the slightest detail about that pending launch by NASA was today when I first saw the news report about 5:45 PM Pacific Time on the Parker Solar Probe. I had not even the slightest inkling that was happening until the CBS News with Jeff Flor reported today about it.
Want to bet that NASA chickens out now that I've broken their code for the calendar day pattern?

Midrash
Rabbinic literature offers many different accounts of other causes for building the Tower of Babel, and of the intentions of its builders. According to one midrash the builders of the Tower, called "the generation of secession" in the Jewish sources, said: "God has no right to choose the upper world for Himself, and to leave the lower world to us; therefore we will build us a tower, with an idol on the top holding a sword, so that it may appear as if it intended to war with God" (Gen. R. xxxviii. 7; Tan., ed. Buber, Noah, xxvii. et seq.).
The building of the Tower was meant to bid defiance not only to God, but also to Abraham, who exhorted the builders to reverence. The passage mentions that the builders spoke sharp words against God, saying that once every 1,656 years, heaven tottered so that the water poured down upon the earth, therefore they would support it by columns that there might not be another deluge (Gen. R. l.c.; Tan. l.c.; similarly Josephus, "Ant." i. 4, § 2).
Some among that generation even wanted to war against God in heaven (Talmud Sanhedrin 109a). They were encouraged in this undertaking by the notion that arrows that they shot into the sky fell back dripping with blood, so that the people really believed that they could wage war against the inhabitants of the heavens

The most famous signal in SETI history was detected on the night of 15 August 1977 at the Ohio State University Big Ear Observatory. Has anything happened since?
As on every other night, while Big Ear was searching the skies for an alien signal, its observations were being recorded on a printout sheet.
A long list of letters and numbers was continuously being churned out, one long string for every one of the 50 channels scanned by the telescope.
A series of characters appeared recording an unusual transmission at the frequency of channel 2: "6EQUJ5" the list read. This startled Big Ear volunteer Jerry Ehman, a professor at Franklin University in Columbus, who was monitoring the readings that night.
He circled the code for later reference and added a single comment in the margins" "Wow!" The signal entered SETI lore as the "Wow!" signal.
The series "6EQUJ5" described the strength of the received signal over a short time-span. In the system used at the time at Big Ear, each number from 1 to 9 represented the signal level above the background noise.
In order to extend the scale, the staff added letters, with each one from A to Z representing increasingly stronger signal levels. 6EQUJ5 represented a signal that grew in strength to level "U," and then gradually subsides.
In more familiar notation, the signal increased from zero to level 30 "sigmas" above the background noise, and then decreased again to zero, all in the span of 37 seconds.
Two aspects of this signal immediately caught the attention of Ehman and project director John Kraus, who saw the results the following morning.
First of all, 37 seconds was precisely the time it takes the Big Ear scanning beam to survey a given point in the heavens.
Because of this, any signal coming from space would follow precisely the "Wow!" signal's pattern - increasing and then decreasing over 37 seconds. This practically ruled out the possibility that the signal was the result of Earthly radio interference.
Secondly, the signal was not continuous, but intermittent. Kraus and Ehman knew that, because Big Ear has two separate beams that scan the same area of the sky in succession, several minutes apart. But the signal appeared on only one of the beams and not on the other, indicating that it had been 'turned off' between the two scans. A strong, focused, and intermittent signal coming from outer space: could it be that Big Ear had detected an alien signal?

The National Weather Service website is now reporting 106 degrees Fahrenheit at my location. The warmest I have seen them report since I lived here locally is 108. My weather device right now is reporting 111 degrees but who knows if that's accurate. A thermistor is easily affected by absorbed heat, or something like that. It's in the shade now but it was in the direct sunlight for several hours today. I have wondered where the threshhold is at the higher temperatures. Something about how the direct sunlight can have a impact only up to a certain point. The surrounding material will be warmed only to a certain point. So my theory has been that in days such as this when the air (a poor conductor of the energy in sunlight) temperature is very high then the surrounding material (a much better conductor of the energy from sunlight) will be about the same.
The smoke today is so thick from the wildfires I cannot even see the nearby mountains from my window.
Hell.
The invention of monkey-human-cavemen in Europe who were often exposed to volcanos, is my guess.
And the United States of America is rife to this day with such moronic and idiotic superstitious people.
Religion is the desperate retreat of the uneducated United States American.
And when I say 'uneducated' then I am referring to the simple, basic stuff that most people don't pay attention to in middle school.
Things such as tectonic plates, penumbra, the reason for the cycles of the moon. And that's just the stuff here locally from the surface of this planet Earth. The vastness of the Universe beyond and out there and its deep history are clinically uncomprehensible to the United States American zipping around spewing out poison in their gas-guzzlers with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the phone clicking away mindlessly droning on with "LOL" and "Like, that was me, like".
A woman trying to counter my argument about ignorance and me thinking "Defensiveness. Yeah, I get it".
And yet, for some reason, I have WASTED more than a decade trying to get them to share their opinion with me about a very important matter that concerns everyone. Truly futile.
Trying to reason with monkeys.
Monkeys who claim to be experts on the Universe.

Blackfoot stories describe a spirit world separated from this world. According to legend, the Northern Lights are the veil separating here from there. On the other side there are communities of people, but I never heard the story that describes those communities, I’m waiting for it. There’s no heaven or hell in the Christian sense that I ever heard of. Your spirit leaves your body and you go to the “Happy Hunting Grounds”, but you are essentially the same person - bad or good. I’ve heard nothing that might suggest reincarnation.
Furthermore, there are other legends that describe a world above ours that could be equated to Heaven. There’s a story that describes one young Blackfoot man that went to the world above (the Sky World). In the narrative, it describes what that other world looked like and what kind of animals there are. Our traditions, stories, beliefs and more are believed to originate from that Sky World.
I could go on, but honestly, the telling of these stories can take hours. I can imagine my Blackfoot ancestors spending long winters memorizing these stories, word for word, which is how the stories survived to this day almost word for word. Now they’re written down for the most part, but there are some stories/songs that strictly remain oral.
And keep in mind, out of the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of tribes throughout North America, there are major differences among them. My answer will be different from what you’d hear from tribes in the east or from the west coast.

Eugene Shoemaker, an astronomer and geologist who was a co-discoverer of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that collided with Jupiter in 1994, was killed Friday in a traffic accident near Alice Springs, Australia.

Executive Order 12684—Conforming the Central Intellegence Agency and Civil Service Retirement and Disability Systems

By virtue of the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, including section 292 of the Central Intelligence Agency Retirement Act of 1964 for Certain Employees, as amended note) (the "Act"), and in order to conform the Central Intelligence Agency Retirement and Disability System to certain amendments to the Civil Service Retirement and Disability System, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. The Director of Central Intelligence shall maintain the Central Intelligence Agency Retirement and Disability System in accordance with the following principles:
(a) In computing and annuity for an employee who service includes service on a part-time basis performed on or after April 7, 1986, such service, other than service subject to the Federal Employees Retirement System, shall be computed as follows:
(1) the average pay of the employee, to the extent that it includes pay for service performed in any position on a part-time basis, shall be determined by using the annual rate of basic pay that would be payable for full-time service in the position; and
(1) the benefit so computed shall then be multipled by a fraction equal to the ratio that the employee's actual service, as determined by prorating and employee's total service to reflect the service that was performed on a part-time basis, bears to the total service that would be creditable for the employee if all of the service had been performed on a full-time basis.
(b) The provision of section 221(b)(3)(C) of the Act regarding the termination of annuity to surviving spouses due to remarriage prior to age 60 shall herafter be administered by the Central Intelligence Agency by substituting age 55 in lieu of age 60.
(c) The provisions of section 221(g)(1) or the Act regarding the remarriage of surviving spouses before, on, and after age 60 shall hereafter be administered by the Central Intelligence Agency by substituting age 55 in lieu of age 60.
Sec. 2. Section 1(a) of this order shall be given retroactive effect to April 7, 1986. Section 1(b) and (c) of this order shall be effective on the date of signature.

Rotary breaks ground on park fountain

The seed was planted nearly 30 years ago, but it wasn’t until Friday that city and Rotary Club officials broke ground on the Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park.
Beneath an intermittent drizzle, the group gathered on a three-quarter-acre site that will be transformed into a $1.25 million interactive water fountain and plaza. It is scheduled to open in late May 2005, in time for the Northwest district Rotary conference.
Project designer Bob Perron was among those who watched as the first holes were dug into the cold, wet ground by Mayor Jim West, Dan Cadagan, Rotary Foundation project committee chairman, and other dignitaries. Perron, designer of Riverfront Park, had the vision of an elaborate entrance fountain in 1975.”There was not enough money in the budget then,” Perron said.
Perron, a resident of Portland and architect of that city’s Salmon Street Spring, said the idea resurfaced about 2½ years ago. The Rotary Club wanted to make a major contribution to the city.
The fountain and plaza are being funded by a public-private partnership between the Spokane Park Board and the Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21. The fundraising has reached 96 percent of the needed amount, thanks to 415 donors, including 31 who each gave more than $5,000.
“This is by far the most significant project we have ever taken on,” Nancy Kennedy, Club 21 president said during the formal ceremony.
The fountain and plaza will bring a radically different look to the entrance of the park. It will cover an area from the Spokane River to Spokane Falls Boulevard on the south border and from the carousel to the “Christmas tree” on the west edge.
Harold Balazs, commissioned as the sculptor, has designed a work that will tell the story of the Spokane Falls and its relationship to native people.
“We were interested in a fountain that reflected in the history of the community,” said Perron, who has worked with Balazs on other architectural projects.
But unlike Perron’s original idea – sculptured children holding hands in water – the flat-deck Rotary Fountain will be run by computer and will be constantly changing. It will have about 140 water jets, sprays, misters, ground hugging fog and other features. It will stand on five stainless columns that are 24 feet high.
The fountain will be open for anyone who wants to play in the water, and will operate from 6 a.m. until midnight from mid-spring to mid-fall, temperature permitting. The fountain may be operated in winter with the mist creating ice formations.
Annual maintenance is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000, Cadagan said. Power alone would cost about $12,000 a year.
Perron said most of the construction is underground piping, which can be done in winter.
“This is going to be one of those things that brings ‘Wow!’ to the city,” West said.

Fellow Countrymen:
One of the great sources of the strength of our country has been the pioneering spirit. It was characteristic of those who first settled on our shores and was the cause of a resistless march to the Pacific Ocean. Our people have ever been going forth into the forest and over the plain to establish themselves in the region of the unknown. They have sought for new fields to conquer. They have been pioneers, however, not only in the physical world, but in the realm of ideas. In science and invention, and especially in the art of government and of social relations, they have taken a dominant part. The frontier has long since disappeared, the opportunity for exploration into unfrequented lands is gone, we seek no additional territory, but the ambition to enter uncharted regions of industry, of enterprise, of social relations, and of thought continues with increasing fervor.
We would miss much of the significance and meaning of the history of the United States unless we took into account this outstanding quality. Our whole outlook has been greatly influenced by it. It is the complete antithesis of all systems of class and caste. Under some theories of human society, theories which have been of value in their time in effecting the organization of a people and bringing them into that condition of order which is the necessary preliminary of enlightened progress, all persons were born to a certain station and oftentimes to a certain locality, which they were supposed to hold during their lifetime. They found that not only their place in life, but also their thought, had been previously ordained for them. It was for the purpose of escaping from this doctrine that this Nation came into existence. The people who came here were seeking freedom of action and freedom of mind. The great revelation of our country has been that men are not born to servitude and obscurity. They are born to all the possibilities of a glorious station which can be won their own achieving.

It's Surprisingly Hard to Go to the Sun
The Sun contains 99.8 percent of the mass in our solar system. Its gravitational pull is what keeps everything here, from tiny Mercury to the gas giants to the Oort Cloud, 186 billion miles away. But even though the Sun has such a powerful pull, it's surprisingly hard to actually go to the Sun: It takes 55 times more energy to go to the Sun than it does to go to Mars.
Why is it so difficult? The answer lies in the same fact that keeps Earth from plunging into the Sun: Our planet is traveling very fast — about 67,000 miles per hour — almost entirely sideways relative to the Sun. The only way to get to the Sun is to cancel that sideways motion.
Since Parker Solar Probe will skim through the Sun's atmosphere, it only needs to drop 53,000 miles per hour of sideways motion to reach its destination, but that's no easy feat. In addition to using a powerful rocket, the Delta IV Heavy, Parker Solar Probe will perform seven Venus gravity assists over its seven-year mission to shed sideways speed into Venus' well of orbital energy. These gravity assists will draw Parker Solar Probe's orbit closer to the Sun for a record approach of just 3.83 million miles from the Sun's visible surface on the final orbits.
Though it's shedding sideways speed to get closer to the Sun, Parker Solar Probe will pick up overall speed, bolstered by Sun's extreme gravity — so it will also break the record for the fastest-ever human-made objects, clocking in at 430,000 miles per hour on its final orbits.
