Memorable quotes for

"Seven Days" (1998)

Lt. Frank Parker: Ever wish you could live your last week over again? Well, my name's Frank B. Parker and I get to all the time. I work for a secret government project experimenting in time travel. When things really get messed up, I'm the guinea pig they send back to fix everything. Catch is, I can only go back seven days.

from my private journal, as me, Kerry Burgess, typed after being released from the USA Veterans Affairs psychiatric hospital enduring months sitting in a grungy two-computer room in a homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle:

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

That's just what I had started thinking in recent days.

I was thinking about how the pilot had instructed over the intercom system for all passengers to assume the crash position that the aircrew instructs you to do before take off. But I wasn't doing that. I was sitting, I think consistently, in the window seat, the prisoner was in the middle seat and the civilian law enforcement officer that I reported to was sitting in the aisle seat. The prisoner was in the crash position, leaning over with his head on his knees, but I wasn't doing that because I had to keep him in sight.

So consistent with the dialog and scenes at one hour eleven minutes, and as I was thinking in recent days about that crash scene in the 2001 film "Bandits" where the dazed Billy Bob Thornton is standing in the field and looking around as he says "I don't know what this is all about," I have been thinking in recent days of me sitting there in that window seat of United Flight 232 and everything is shaking around and there is a heavy thump and I can't really see anything any longer and then I find myself able to see around me again and I am sitting alone in that airplane seat. In that cornfield. Nothing around me but that airplane seat I am still strapped into after a heavy thumping after all that shaking and then I am just sitting there and I can see again and I don't know how that has happened. That is what I have thought about more than once in recent days. The line of thoughts about me sitting alone in the airplane seat is new in recent days. I haven't thought much specifically past that point but I seem to be familiar with details afterwards and that is consistent with the usual train of thought in that I am all alone. The world is empty. I spend decades in that empty world and eventually I start to struggle with trying to get out of that empty world and back to the real world.

She went before I did but I was already there.

I thought about that extensively. I think I wrote here before about how I tried to find again what I thought I wrote in my journal about it but could not find anything.

I had been there for months or longer. One day, I was passing through New York and I had the urge to drive through New York City. I was thinking that my mind was laboring with the notion I would be leaving there on that day going back to the real world and so I had taken out of my luggage my dress white US Navy uniform I was wearing that day months and months ago I found myself there in my new world. I had parked somewhere in the massive urban city and was walking along when I saw her there on the sidewalk, thinking she was a mannequin. I thought extensively of how only certain new vessels remained and I operated one US Navy [ ship ] to cross the Atlantic. We parted at a doorway after stating I would return to Charleston and I walked through a doorway before I even thought to say goodbye turning to find myself alone again.

Judge Esther Salas decries shooting that killed son, injured husband in emotional statement

USA TODAY

Suzanne Russell, Bridgewater Courier News, USA TODAY August 3, 2020

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Federal Judge Esther Salas has spoken for the first time publicly about a shooting at her township home last month in which authorities say a disgruntled lawyer killed her son and seriously wounded her husband.

In a video statement issued Monday, Salas called for more privacy for federal judges in the wake of the July 19 attack at her home.

She noted that serving as judge involves “making tough calls” that sometimes leave people angry and upset. But she said judges should not have to “live in fear for our lives” because personal information, such as home addresses, can be easily obtained by anyone seeking to do them or their families harm.

'Lunatic hiding in plain sight': The bitter tale of a woman-hating lawyer who killed a rival and a judge's son

She said the shooter knew where she lived, which church her family attended and had a complete dossier on their family.

"At the moment there is nothing we can do to stop it, and that is unacceptable," the judge said. "My son’s death cannot be in vain, which is why I am begging those in power to do something to help my brothers and sisters on the bench."

"My family has experienced a pain that no one should ever have to endure. And I am here asking everyone to help me ensure that no one ever has to experience this kind of pain," she continued. "We may not be able to stop something like this from happening again, but we can make it hard for those who target us to track us down."

Around 5 p.m. July 19, Daniel Anderl, 20, and his father, prominent defense attorney Mark Anderl, both went to the door of their Point of Woods Drive home in the Hidden Lake section of North Brunswick where the gunman, posing as a delivery person, opened fire, killing Daniel, the couple's only child.

Roy Den Hollander, 72, a self-proclaimed anti-feminist attorney who grew up in Bergen County, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Rockland, New York, on July 20, the day after the ambush. Authorities believe he also shot and killed a fellow attorney in California in the days before the attack at Salas’ home.

In addition, Den Hollander had a list of other potential targets, including another federal judge in New Jersey, as well as two New Jersey judges and two doctors, according to The New York Times. The list was reportedly found inside Den Hollander's vehicle.

"I later learned that this monster, who had a FedEx package in his hand, opened fire, but Daniel being Daniel, protected his father and he took the shooter’s first bullet directly to the chest,” the judge said. "The monster then turned his attention to my husband and began to shoot at my husband, one shot after another. Mark was shot three times: one bullet entered his right chest, the other his left abdomen, and the last one in the right forearm.

Salas, who was in the basement of the home, was not physically injured.

"While my husband is still in the hospital recovering from multiple surgeries, we are living every parent’s worst nightmare – making preparations to bury our only child, Daniel," she said.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced for Daniel Anderl, a 2018 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Metuchen and a rising junior at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He had plans to follow in his parents’ footsteps and become a lawyer.

Salas said the shooting came at the end of a weekend in which the family had been celebrating Daniel's 20th birthday.

"Daniel always wanted to spend his birthdays with his dad and me, so he asked we host a party for a few of his Catholic University of America friends. Because of the pandemic, his father, Mark, and I had some concerns; however, we thought we could adhere to safety guidelines and we agreed to allow his friends to come spend the weekend. The weekend was a glorious one. It was filled with love, laughter and smiles," she said.

The morning of July 19, the parents went to church and allowed their son to rest. By the afternoon the family began cleaning up from the party, the judge said.

"Daniel and I went downstairs to the basement and we were chatting, as we always do. And Daniel said ‘Mom, let’s keep talking, I love talking to you, Mom,’” Salas said. "It was at that exact moment that the doorbell rang, and Daniel looked at me and said, ‘Who is that?’

"And before I could say a word, he sprinted upstairs," she continued. "Within seconds, I heard the sound of bullets and someone screaming, ‘No!’”

She said now, more than ever, there needs to be a way to keep the lives of federal judges private.

"I know this is a complicated issue, and I don’t pretend to know or have all answers, but together we can find a way. Let’s commence a national dialogue, let’s work collaboratively to find a solution that will safeguard the privacy of federal judges," she said.

"Let me be clear and tell you firsthand – this is a matter of life and death. And we can’t just sit back and wait for another tragedy to strike," said Salas, who expressed her thanks to first responders, the medical staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick who have treated her and her husband, as well as those who have offered prayers for their family.

'Men's rights' lawyer eyed in shooting of NJ judge's family

Flight Of The Intruder (1991)

(from internet transcript)

Now, what altitude were you flying at?

Grafton: Uh... 200. 200 maybe, AGL. I pushed the nose over... started a shallow... dive in on the gun and leveled out. Some SAMs had tried us when we'd come in, and I wanted to... to get out of there low and fast.

1991 film "Flight of the Intruder" DVD video:

USS Independence CV 62 Commander Air Group: You came out by a different route?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Yeah. Yes, sir. About 30 miles, I guess.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: Lucky small-arms fire.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Hmm.

Commander Air Group: All right. Just bad luck, that's all. Just ran out of luck. Take Mr. Grafton off the flight schedule. You got liberty in Subic in a couple days. You need the rest.

Parker: What was your target?

Grafton: A suspected truck park.

Parker: You hit it?

Grafton: Oh, yeah, we hit it. Trees. A bunch of trees. There was nothing there again.

Camparelli: What's your problem? Spit it out.

Grafton: Well, I don't think trees in a suspected truck park is worth a man's life.

Camparelli: Targets are picked for political consideration, Mr. Grafton, with the best intelligence we have available. You have any trouble with that?

Grafton: Well, I don't think losing Morg is a political consideration, sir.

Camparelli: Look... I know losing McPherson is lousy. I don't like the targets, either. I hate them. But... I don't want any blood feuds going on. Half the time, it isn't the mission you're flying that kills you, it's the one before. Do you read me?

I found myself wondering today when it was that the Stark was hit by the Iraqis. I want to say it was 1986 but I started thinking later that it was 1987. I still remember standing in the barracks when I was in Orlando and seeing the news report. But that was 1986. In 1987, I would have been in Dam Neck. I was watching the tv with one of my roommates

previously of the USS Kitty Hawk I think, so that would have definitely been Orlando . Can’t look it up because the internet has been down all day. I suspect terrorists are trying to block my internet access.

I started wondering about the Stark because I wonder if I was there and I took some kind of action in response. I am hoping that, if indeed I did something, I took the initiative to select a legitimate military target and took action. Something similar to: “Hello, Baghdad Bob? Yeah, I’m flying in a message from the Stark, federal express. I hope you’re there to take delivery, but if not, that’s up to you.”

Later I started thinking that maybe I just bombed their lawn, to send them a message to not make any more “mistakes” around our ships.

Affiliation at the time of the award: Rockefeller University, New York, NY, USA

Prize motivation: "for his discovery of tumour-inducing viruses."

Prize share: 1/2

Work

In cancer, cells grow and multiply beyond normal limits. In 1910 Peyton Rous extracted material from a cancer tumor in a hen and injected it into a healthy chicken. The chicken developed cancer, and he concluded that cells from the hen's tumor contained an infectious substance, a virus, that transmits cancer. However, the study could not be replicated in mammals and was long overlooked. When research showed that viruses can operate by affecting the genetic material of normal germ cells, interest in Peyton Rous' discovery was reignited.

Mirror

What damage did Anthony Blunt's spy ring do to Britain?

00:00, 24 JUL 2009 UPDATED 16:02, 28 JAN 2012

BY MIRROR.CO.UK

Blunt, Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Cairncross... they are five typically British names.

It could almost be the first line in one of those Monty Python sketches set in an English public school.

But these were the names of the men who formed the Cambridge Spy Ring - five young men who were at the university together in the 1930s.

In addition to gadding about in dinner jackets, drinking too much champagne and generally behaving like characters from Brideshead Revisited, these young men found time to develop left-wing sympathies that brought them to the attention of Soviet intelligence recruiters.

And, unfortunately for us, they all went on to greater things later in life.

Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, who worked for the Foreign Office, did a bunk to the Soviet Union when they were fingered by a defector in 1951.

Kim Philby, who was extraordinarily a senior figure in MI6, bluffed it out until 1961 when he too had to do a moonlight flit to Moscow.

The fourth man, Anthony Blunt, had his cover blown in 1964 but in return for not being publicly exposed, he co-operated with his interrogators.

He was even able to continue as Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures - but rumour has it the late Queen Mother would have nothing to do with him.

Mrs Thatcher exposed the deal on coming to power in 1979. Blunt was stripped of his knighthood and disgraced. He was booed at a cinema in Notting Hill and his boyfriend was so distraught he tried to kill himself.

It was at this time that Blunt put his thoughts down on paper - and his memoirs were released yesterday.

The 30,000-word manuscript was lodged in the British Library in 1984 - shortly after Blunt's death - on condition that it should remain sealed for 25 years.

In it, he tells how he was lured into the spy ring by the flamboyantly homosexual Guy Burgess, whom he met at Cambridge in 1931. Blunt was also homosexual but denied any relationship with Burgess.

His memoirs reveal he didn't initially take to the younger man but he was soon won over, and became caught up in Burgess's enthusiasm for left-wing politics, which had gained an "almost religious quality" among students.

In 1935 or 1936, Burgess was recruited by Stalin's Comintern with orders to "go underground". And he asked his friend to join him.

"I was faced with the most important decision of my life," Blunt wrote.

"The atmosphere in Cambridge was so intense, the enthusiasm for any antifascist activity so great, that I made the biggest mistake of my life." The manuscript says nothing of his spying for the NKVD - forerunner of the KGB - during the Second World War when he was working for MI5.

He strongly denied lurid tales of his time sharing a house with Burgess in London's Bentinck Street, and dismisses reports that it was an "alternation of sexual orgies and conspiratorial conversations designed to hinder the war effort". We should not excuse Blunt or any of his fellow travellers.

They were traitors, full stop. But attitudes to communism were different. We tend now to view the Bolshevik Revolution as a terrible mistake. It was the moment the gangsters - the people who murdered poor old Tsar Nicholas II and his glamorous young family - took over and held ruthlessly onto power until the arrival of Mikhail Gorbachev 70 years later.

But for many, the Revolution meant the overthrow of the old corrupt order and an opportunity for ordinary people to have better lives.

And by 1941, with the Americans hesitating about entering the war and the UK on its beam ends, the only country who looked in with a chance of defeating Hitler was Soviet Russia.

All the Cambridge spies caused damage to their country.

Maclean as a diplomat in wartime Washington was privy to private messages between top Americans and Winston Churchill.

The information may well have helped Stalin play hardball at Yalta.

Blunt, or "Johnson" as his Russian handlers codenamed him, became an officer in the Security Service (MI5) at the beginning of the war.

He was on the distribution list of the most secret British Intelligence ULTRA (the codebreaking portrayed in the book and film Enigma).

A key question is how useful was their treachery to the Soviets? The answer is mixed and complicated. Yes, Maclean's information on Anglo-American plans and intentions was useful to Stalin.

But given the power and geograph-icaposition of the Red Army at the end of the war the western allies did not have many cards to play.

Poland could not have been rescued from the Iron Curtain, however hard we tried.

Philby's contribution was more poisonous. He betrayed the names of as many British agents as he could, including lists of all those who had spied for us in Nazi-occupied eastern Europe.

As communist regimes took over in the late 1940s most of these brave men and women who had fought were tortured and shot by the KGB and their local henchmen.

Ironically, Soviet intelligence never fully trusted the Cambridge ring and could never quite believe their luck.

That Philby, a young undergraduate recruited on the off-chance at Cambridge in the 1930s, should join MI6 and then after the war become Head of the Counter-Soviet Section seemed to them too good to be true.

But they never fully exploited their intelligence windfall.

As for the Cambridge spies themselves, they all died unhappy and broken men.

Read Anthony Blunt's anguish and despair at his public disgrace.

In the end he understood - doing the dirty on your country can never be justified and it never pays.

Kerry Burgess, in the only time I know about, because he has not returned from his second trip, was in there for a time I later presumed because of his astronomical readings in the sky, of which I assumed was accurate in this real world. He had no clocks so he spent almost all his time, which was probably more than fifty years, trying to find a way to measure time. There was no people in that world but sometimes he would see mannequins positioned around and sometimes that mannequins would be positioned around where he had been trying to measure time, such as by chiseling marks into rock, which the mannequins were then standing in front of that had been sabotaged.

from my private journal, as me, Kerry Burgess, typed after being released from the USA Veterans Affairs psychiatric hospital enduring many months sitting in a grungy two-computer room in a homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle:

I have been wondering if anything I remember about the past is real. Do I have a different past? Am I really who I think I am? The stuff I imagine happening to me sometimes, did that stuff really happen?
