Dr. Fred L. Whipple, director of the observatory, hopes his staff's big win at the track is a portent of the astronomers’ future fortunes. “No one could imagine two more different pursuits than wagering and skywatching,” says Whipple. “Yet, a little basic’ cooperation —at very small expense to either—has served both equally well.”
Even those who are not astronomers begin to share the astronomer's concern for preserving and protecting Arizona's dark skies as a natural resource when they experience a night under millions of slowly spinning stars. In the lonesome blackness of the desert at midnight, one marvels at the multitude of worlds above and wonders at the complexity of the universe, just as ancient man must have when he found life forms in the star clusters and gave them names and shapes and powers.

It was a procedure often done in the Middle Ages. They…well they drill a hole in the person's head. By drilling a hole, the evil spirits are released, thus saving the person from eternal damnation.
