INT—ALIEN PYRAMID
[Ferretti is still trying to use the radio as the others eat MREs.]
FERRETTI
(into radio)
Kawalski, this is base. Do you copy?
[Freeman reaches over and shuts the radio off.]
FREEMAN
You're wasting the battery. We'll never get anything in this storm. We'll have to wait 'till it passes.
FERRETTI
Yeah, right. If it passes. You know, I was stationed in the Middle East. I've never seen anything like it.
FREEMAN
Yeah, yeah.
REILLY
I don't understand. Why don't we just...turn the 'gate back on ourselves?
PORRO
Yeah, how hard can it be?
FERRETTI
(sarcastically)
That would be great! Yet we could turn the thing in the wrong order and...materialize in the...vacuum of outer space. Do you have any idea how many possible combinations there are on that thing?
FREEMAN
(sarcastically)
No. How many?
FERRETTI
Shut up.

Sir Paul M. Nurse
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2001
Born: 25 January 1949, Norwich, United Kingdom
Affiliation at the time of the award: Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London, United Kingdom
Prize motivation: "for their discoveries of key regulators of the cell cycle."
Prize share: 1/3
Work
From the beginning organisms evolve from one cell, which divides and becomes new cells that in turn divide. Eventually different types of cells are formed with different roles. For an organism to function and develop normally, cell division has to occur at a suitable pace. Paul Nurse has helped to show how the cell cycle is controlled. Through studies of yeast in the mid-1970s, he was able to show that a special gene plays a decisive role in several of the cell cycle's phases. In 1987 he identified a corresponding human gene.

Solomon Lefschetz
From Wikipedia
Solomon Lefschetz ForMemRS (3 September 1884 – 5 October 1972) was an American mathematician who did fundamental work on algebraic topology, its applications to algebraic geometry, and the theory of non-linear ordinary differential equations.
moving to Princeton University in 1924, where he was soon given a permanent position. He remained there until 1953.
In the application of topology to algebraic geometry, he followed the work of Charles Émile Picard, whom he had heard lecture in Paris at the École Centrale Paris. He proved theorems on the topology of hyperplane sections of algebraic varieties, which provide a basic inductive tool (these are now seen as allied to Morse theory, though a Lefschetz pencil of hyperplane sections is a more subtle system than a Morse function because hyperplanes intersect each other).

1950 Awarding of the first Feltrinelli prizes
In June 1950 the Feltrinelli prize was awarded for the first time.
Originally Antonio Feltrinelli had arranged that the Academy of Italy, founded by Mussolini in 1926, could have an inalienable and perpetual fund intended for those who had distinguished themselves in the arts and sciences. The events that involved the Accademia d'Italia meant that Feltrinelli's legacy was transferred by law, at the end of the war, to the reborn Accademia dei Lincei.
After some vicissitudes linked to the claims of the heirs, the question was definitively resolved thanks to the tenacious action of Rivera first and then Castelnuovo, assisted by the chancellor Raffaele Morghen.
From the report of the general meeting of 4 June 1950 we read:
With the Fondazione Feltrinelli finally erected as a non-profit organization, we can for the first time assign a prize drawn from the income of the conspicuous patrimony left by Antonio Feltrinelli in order to honor those who have made themselves famous in the sciences in the arts. The prize, destined this year to the moral and historical sciences, was awarded to Dr. Paola Bancari Montuoso and to Dr. Umberto Zanotti Bianco for the very important discovery of a Greek sanctuary at the mouth of the Sele near Pesto, a blanket that had a wide resonance in the international scientific environment, and brought new and fundamental contributions to the history of art, religion and civilization

"Blame It On The Tetons"
(from internet transcript)
Blame it on the Tetons
Yeah, I need a scapegoat now
No, my dog won't bite you
Though it had the right to
You ought to give her credit
'Cause she knows I would've let it happen
Blame it on the weekends
God, I need a cola now
Oh, we mumble loudly
Wear our shame so proudly
Wore our blank expressions
Trying to look interesting
Blame it all on me 'cause
God, I need a cold one now
All them eager actors
Gladly take the credit
For the lines created
By the people tucked away from
Sight
Is just a window
From the room we're bound to
If you find a way out
Oh, would you just let me know how?
Would you just let me know how?
Blame it on the web, but the
Spider's your problem now
Language is the liquid
That we're all dissolved in
Great for solving problems
After it creates a problem
Blame it on the Tetons
God, I need a scapegoat now
Everyone's a building burning
With no one to put the fire out
Standing at the window looking out
Waiting for time to burn us down
Everyone's an ocean drowning
With no one really to show how
They might get a little better air
If they turned themselves into a cloud

REMEMBERING DR. COSMO
APRIL 4, 2011
In many ways, the most influential part of my college education took place not in the classroom, but at the radio station. WPRB 103.3FM may be housed on the Princeton campus, but it’s independently funded and gives a handful of Princeton students a musical outlet, work experience, and the too-rare opportunity to interact with members of the community. During my time at WPRB, one of these people was Dr. Cosmo, a DJ who had a Friday night show since the early 90s.
